So Pirates 4 is going to be in 3D.
QuotePirates of the Caribbean' filming here all in 3-D
Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," with Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow for the fourth time, will be the first in the franchise that will be shot entirely in 3-D — loaded with special effects. Director Rob Marshall ("Chicago," "Nine") starts location shooting here in June, for a May 20, 2011, launch.

Glad that they're filming it in 3D, instead of doing a 2D conversion like Alice in Wonderland etc. Filming in 3D looks much better than those conversions so i'm glad to hear this :D Could we expect a IMAX 3D release? Since they're filming it in 3D from the start i think it's highly possible.

Urgh I hate 3D, I'm so disappointed. Even if a film is shot in 3D, is there still an opportunity for cinemas to show a 2D version?

If it is possible I'm going to watch PotC 4 in 2D. I think it is not necessary to shoot it in 3D.

I personally love IMAX 3D;
Just 'normal' 3D is very bad, but IMAX is awesome! :D

There won't be as many cinemas showing it in 2D but they should do. Most 3D films are released in both formats.

@mehdi5 I could've sworn that Alice was filmed in 3D and not converted?

I'm not fussed by this news, I mean every major blockbuster seems to get the 3D treatment now and sometimes it works and sometimes it just completely fails. Just like Narnia 3 is in 3D (however not a Disney release anymore).

It was converted, Tim Burton didn't want to film in 3D because he liked the idea of filming on film rather than digitally.
That's why i'm glad this is actually gonna be filmed in digital 3D, Alice had a reasonable 3D conversion, but when you compare it to a film that was filmed in 3D you'll see the difference.

Although I like the 3D effects, not every movie has to be in 3D. I hope that PotC 4 is also released in 2D.

Maybe the 3D effects will bring more people into the cinemas to watch Pirates 4, like the 3D effects did with Avatar. I'm sure that if the movie wasn't filmed in 3D, it wouldn't have been so succesfull, because the story was very weak. I think the same goes for Alice in Wonderland.

Glad to hear it's coming to IMAX too, the franchise always had scenes that would look amazing in IMAX, especially now it's being filmed in 3D.

Yes!! I've got a good feeling about this.

In an interview Bruckheimer was asked "what have you learnt from the original films that you'll apply to the 4th" or something similar and he replied "not to make it so long!". So fingers crossed.

Well the filming of this just got bucket loads more exciting for Londoners. Filming has started for 6 weeks on a massive set in Greenwich. They've put up massive blue screens and fake buildings to make the area look like 17th Century England. Hopefully I'll be going down to visit the site soon as it looks quite exciting. Johnny Depp has already been photographed filming on set and they've had loads of extras and horses in the area.

You probably saw this (it made the 6 O'Clock news!), but if not - Johnny Depp answered a little girl's letter and paid a visit to her school in Greenwich - in character! - between filming:

The report on the news actually showed a little of the set.

I didn't think it possible, but my love for Johnny Depp just grew after seeing the story about him going to that girl's school. I am SO excited about the fourth Pirates installment, I have a feeling they really are going to go back to the simplicity of the first film. And what's not to love about more Jack Sparrow antics?!
