We usually keep the Thomas Cook card open and put £50 on it when the exchange rates look good. This way we are getting the most euros for our money and saving small amounts that really add up between trips.

I use an Ice prepaid card for Euros. They send a backup card at the same time as the normal one in case you lose the normal one and the back up card is free. Also they don't charge if you withdraw Euros from an ATM.
