Chris Sanders (thé Lilo & Stitch director and writer) his story and himself have been dropped from the movie and replaced by Chris Williams who has previously worked on Mulan and The Emperor's New Groove.  He came up with a brand new story:

Bolt [the dog] stars with Penny (a 12-year-old girl) in the hit television show, "American Dog." Which those familiar with this production have described as " ... Johnny Quest meets James Bond."

The gimmick of the "American Dog" TV show is that Bolt & Penny fight crime. With this heroic canine using his super powers (EX: A bark that's so loud it actually stuns whoever it's aimed at) to defeat the bad guys.

But Bolt ... He doesn't understand that this is all just pretend. He actually thinks that he's a super hero. More importantly, that Penny really is a little girl who loves him. Rather than some actress who's just been hired to play a part. And as for those super powers ... Bolt hasn't yet realized that all of those brick walls that he's been jumping through for all these years are just fakes that have been constructed by the studio's prop department.

So obviously Bolt lives in a fantasy world. As do so many others who call Hollywood home. But thanks to the extra special treatment that this celebrity canine always receives, he never once has had reason to question this existence. To wonder what life might be like outside of the studio's walls.

But all of that changes one night when Bolt's handler accidentally leaves the door open to this pampered pooch's cage. Bolt wanders out into the night ... And then (for reasons that are too hard to explain here) winds up getting sealed inside of this UPS / Fed Ex-type package that's being shipped overnight to New York City.

Bolt is finally able to bust out of that box once it arrives in NYC. Far from the world that he knows, this heroic canine now decides to use his super powers to get back home.

As you might expect, this deluded dog is going to need as much help as he can get in order to cross the continental United States and eventually make his way back to Hollywood. Which is why it's lucky that Bolt soon befriends Mr. Mittens (Who is actually a female cat who was mis-named by an inattentive owner) as well as Rhino. Who's this hamster who never leaves his plastic exercise ball. Who (not-so-co-incidentally) is a huge fan of "American Dog," having seen & then memorized virtually every episode of the series.

So this trio then bands together to help this TV star get back home to Hollywood. With Bolt (because he's still certain that he has super powers) continually attempting these incredibly dangerous stunts. Like jumping off a bridge onto a train that's moving at high speed.

As you might expect, Mr. Mittens & Rhino soon have their hands full. As they try to keep this crazy canine from accidentally killing himself. And then -- of course -- comes that awful moment toward the middle of the story. When Bolt suddenly realizes that he's not actually a super hero. More importantly, that "American Dog" was just some TV show ...

The film is now titled "Bolt" rather than American Dog, and Chris Sanders has unfortunately left the project and Disney altogether.

From Wikipedia:

Much of the original graphic style of the movie was inspired by the work of Edward Hopper, and (as in Rapunzel) techniques such as non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) were to be used to give it a special visual appearance.

Bolt's previous plot told the story of a dog named Henry, a famous TV star, who one day finds himself stranded in the Nevada desert with a testy, one-eyed cat and an oversized, radioactive rabbit who are themselves searching for new homes, all the while believing he is still on television.

In 2006, after becoming Chief Creative Officer at Disney, John Lasseter along with other directors from Pixar and Disney viewed a couple of early cuts of American Dog. According to Lasseter, Chris Sanders was replaced because he resisted the changes that he and the other directors had suggested. A February, 2007 Jim Hill Media article presented several rumors about possible changes to the film: Henry's name has changed to Bolt. He has a girl with him on a show called 'American Dog'. He thinks his super-powers that he does on the show are real. He soon winds up in New York, meeting Mr. Mittens, actually a female cat and a hamster called Rhino who is always in his exercise wheel. The two try to keep Bolt from killing himself along the way. In the middle of the film, Bolt finds out that his powers are actually fake. The article also said that the film might be getting a new name, with Hollywood Dog a top contender.

On June 8, 2007, a CGI animated project titled Bolt was announced by Disney, amongst a roster of future films, to be released on November 26, 2008. Since American Dog was not mentioned and the name of the main character is also Bolt, it is assumed that the film has been retitled.

Sounds like this film has gone through lots of changes since it started. From the last paragraph in that qoute it also sounds like its CGI. Hmm, that could be a bad thing, but I dunno, seems to have a good voice cast.

Anyway, Bolt is not going to live action, it's a CGI production, written by Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch), but he left the company now.

The characters are looking much more refined there. They seem to suit 2D much more naturally.

It's interesting to see they've actually got very high hopes for this one. It's their big "holiday" picture. I can't help think that releasing it at the end of November against Bond and Harry Potter and all that is a bit suicidal, but oh well... lots of kids (and pets) will probably be getting Bolt merchandise for Christmas this year.

No doubt it'll cause some Rat/Nemo-style crisis of kids getting dogs for Christmas too.

Just did a little IMDb on Bolt... By the looks of things the cast list is taking a couple of random twists in my opinion... But there's no real telling of who is who with the exception that We Know John Travolta is Bolt and Miley Ray Cyrus is Penny... Yet a young penny has been cast in the form of My Friends Tigger and Pooh star Chloe Moretz, (Super Sleuth Darby)

More suprising for me however was the Appearence of WWE/WCW Superstar and several time Champion Randy Savage or for those who Remember him better 'Macho Man' Randy Savage... But I wasn't able to find...

Although me thinks the simple name "Miley Cyrus" up there will easily make this Disney's best performing in-house CGI work yet, if it can get a leg over the other Thanksgiving releases. Not that Chicken and Robinsons are that much competition.
