Glasgow claims McDuck as its own

A famous Disney cartoon character has been honoured as one of Glasgow's most famous residents.



The city council has included Scrooge McDuck alongside Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Sir Alex Ferguson on a list of Glasgow's great and good.

Research found that the cantankerous multi-millionaire duck began as a shoeshine boy in the city before leaving for the US to make his fortune.

McDuck, Donald Duck's uncle, first appeared in Disney comics in 1947.

He was recently added to a list of famous Glaswegians on Glasgow City Council's website.

The who's who claims to name those who have made their mark on the political, scientific, educational, religious, commercial and cultural map at home and abroad.

It describes the beaked character as "the richest duck in the world; Donald Duck's uncle and great uncle to Huey, Dewey and Louie."

A council spokeswoman said some light-hearted research led to the discovery that he was from Glasgow.

"We are delighted to learn that Walt Disney's Scrooge McDuck is indeed a Glaswegian.

"He joins a list of VIPs on our famous citizens list including Donald Dewar and Billy Connolly.

"We are of course proud to have such a famous cartoon character in our Glasgow who's who."

The discovery was made in a US comic called The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck, published in 1996.

It depicts the young web-footed down-and-out becoming enraged after he is paid a US dime to shine a ditchdigger's boots.

But the coin inspires him to stow aboard a Clyde cattle ship and head to the US to make his fortune.

He maintained the link to his Caledonian roots by buying a castle on Dismal Downs near Rannoch Moor - which was described as "as desolate a piece o' real estate as ye'll find anywhere in Scotland".
