hi, so much info about food/meal plans and all different. 2 adults 2 kids going can someone please clarify the following.

you can pay with cash(euros) in any restaurant if you dont have a meal plan.
its no cheaper having a meal plan.
the meal plans have a face value is you eat less/cheaper no refund, if you eat more you pay the difference.
eating in the disney village is cheaper than the parks.

we dont want to be tied to certain restaurants and just would prefer to eat what and where we like and pay as we go, is there a good argument against this,

Generally you are right about all the topics.
Only one thing about "cheaper with a  meal plan" - when booking a plan (half board, full board) you get a discount. And price depends on the plan you buy (connected with the hotels you are staying in). So it is a matter of calculation. If you are in an expensive hotel and buy the most expensive plan and want to eat only in the most expensive a la carte restaurants - it is worth.
If you are in Santa Fe and take half board - you can use it for example in Plaza Gardens (all you can eat buffet) -  you use a little discount, it makes sense. Then for other meals you ear wherever you want.

I explain it maybe a little bit complicated. We always make a calculation - meal plan price vs. menus in restararants (when you pay cash) and see what is better. Prices can be seen at dlpguide.com, dining.

Mileto is correct, if you buy a meal plan you need to use it fully to benefit from the slight discount you get. If you want to be free to eat anywhere you like, take cash. We took cash last year, no problems eating wherever we wanted. The village is not necessarily any cheaper than the parks, but offers different restaurants and some that don't take vouchers (e.g. Planet Hollywood)

Hi we took cash and it worked fine, as people say it doesn't tie you down.  2 nights we had dinner at the top price ones, one night in a fast food type one, one we ate 'at home' (davy crockett) so it probably evens out but I liked having the freedom

It is marginally cheaper having a meal plan as for example the price of the set-menu you are entitled to use at the table service restaurants is normally around the €40-45 mark whereas Plus Half Board is €34 per voucher.

All restaurants of course take cash and credit cards.

To the extent dining in the village is cheaper than dining in the parks, the difference is marginal and the park restaurants are in my experience better/more pleasant.

Never used meal plan because of this purely we love these 3! The only reastaraunt other than these we use is inventions, and we're trying bistrot chez remy on our next visit.
