Thrill rides

Hi,

I've been to Disneyland Paris a few times but due to a heart condition, there are a few rides I've never been on. Specifically, Aerosmith, Space Mountain, Indiana Jones and Tower of Terror.

I was wondering what peoples' opinions of the general roughness of these rides is? I'm going back in October, and I wonder if I'm avoiding any of them unnecessarily.

I've been on Thunder Mountain and Crush's Coaster, and I'm fine with those, and I've been on things like Expedition Everest and Space Mountain in Florida. Are the rides above much worse than those?

Space Mountain in Paris is more hardcore than Florida apparently if that helps.

It's tricky because whilst Crush is pretty hairy, I think the thrill factor comes from the physicality of all the twists and turns rather than it actually being scary.  Do you know what I mean?  It makes me feel dizzy and sick but I'm not scared whilst I'm riding it so I don't feel like my heart gets going cos of it.

Aerosmith is very similar to space mountain and Indiana jones in that they're standard thrill coasters.  For me personally, there's not much to choose to between them.  They're all pretty thrilling and get my heart going a little with the adrenaline rush.

Now Tower of Terror, for me, is just that, terrifying.  Even though you know the drop is coming, it's still really scary and I definitely feel my heart go through the roof and miss a beat!   I am scared on that ride, albeit a fun kind of scared.  And for me, it's the fear that gets my heart going, not something like Crush that just chucks you around a bit.  So I would definitely be wary of that one.

Obviously, I am not medically qualified to advise you what is suitable, all I can do is share my experiences of how the rides make me feel.

SM and RnR are fairly similar rides although SM is the rougher of the two. The reported G force on RnR is around 5G which shows you the pressures it puts on your body.

IJ is a lot smaller but this can make its loop in particular feel more intense as it's tighter.

ToT doesn't have the forces that the rollercoasters do but it gets my heart going more - I love it and I've been on it loads but there's still that anticipation. It's really designed themeing wise to build your expectation to maximum levels and surprise you.

Thanks for the replies - I think Tower of Terror is probably out. I don't really like drops, so I'm not sure I'd enjoy it much anyway. Shame, as I really like the theme of it - I got as far as the front of the queue at the Florida one, then decided against going on the actual ride. Enjoyed the queue area, though :)

I had a look at a video of Indiana Jones, and that doesn't look too bad - loop aside, it didn't seem much more extreme than Thunder Mountain. I'd got the idea that you went backwards on that ride, but it looks like you don't?

I should probably try and find pictures of the restraints on the rides - one worry is that I've had quite a lot of surgery so I wouldn't want to get too battered around near my chest. I've heard Space Mountain can shake you about quite a lot.

Maybe I should just stick to Casey Jr. :)

Indiana Jones is definitely less scary than SM and RnRC. But is really rough and hurts me quite a bit. I always have brushes around my shoulders and a sour head and neck after riding it. (be aware that I bruise easily). I don't know if it will matter for your chest.  it goes forward, it used to go backwards a while a go but they changed it a few years a go.

both SM and RnRC are launch coasters. So check with your doctor if launch coasters are ok.

Space Mountain, Indiana Jones and Aerosmith all leave me feeling battered and bruised.  I haven't ridden in the new cars on Space Mountain yet but from what I've heard they haven't made a huge difference.  They all put pressure on your chest in my opinion, and rattle you around.

What about RC Racer?  Have you ridden that?  That's a really good ride but nice and smooth and doesn't beat you up!

Space Mountain has improved immensely since re-opening.  Not super smooth, but a big step forward, plus they now have new restraints, which are a huge improvement on the ones they had before.

I disliked it before & avoided it as it just gave me a headache from being shaken around by the old cars so I had only ridden a very few times.  Last trip, must have done it 15 times over 4 days!  :D

Thanks - yeah I have been on RC Racer and that was fine. I sort of forgot about that as we don't generally tend to spend a lot of time in Walt Disney Studios. I'll have to give it another go.

My wife went on Space Mountain at the Star Wars event in May, and thought it was quite a bit smoother. Good to hear others saying the same. It'll be November when we're there again, so I'll probably be wearing a bit of extra padding anyway. Might have to think about giving it a go.

Thanks all :)

Coaster Kingdom

Space Mountain is 100x smoother now it has new trains and the only issue is it can get hot in there.

Rnrc is amazing, more intense than SM by far due to the giant over loop at the star and the inversions. Helixs aren't too intense.

Tower of terror won't give you issues, the first drop is the worst, from there on it's just fun.

Crush, standard spinning coaster, not too intense at all.

Tagging on about Space Mountain (now Hyperspace Mountain), the restraints are a huge improvement over the others. The new restraints adjust to your body, no more clicking in like a lounger.

Downside of the new ride vehicles: No head padding, as in the part where your head sits in the seat of the vehicle has literally no soft padding, just the hard shell of the vehicle resting against your head.

Therefore for thrill rollercoaster rides that include inversions and/or loops I heavily imply an important rule I was told from another one of my fellow trip-goers: *Keep your head back and make sure it is stayed central in the head area of the ride vehicle to avoid any rough head swaying.*

EDIT FOR OTHER ATTRACTIONS YOU REQUESTED ABOUT:

Rock 'n' Rollercoaster is a rough wild ride and features the fastest ride launch in both parks (I believe Space Mountain is slower). So I would exercise caution with that one.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril seems to be quite covered by others already so won't say much apart from the dips before the sudden drop that goes into the loop are a little more immense than they look.

The Tower of Terror, The Hollywood Tower Hotel. My personal favourite from the Studios. The service elevators that you ride in seem to have a mind of their own, however their performance patterns (aka Drop Sequences) seem to be the same. However the drops are strong as you are pulled down, best to relay that message along. Also to brace for the first drop I will say where it is,  in white text for spoiler reasons, highlight text to read it.

The first drops happens at the end of the hallway scene in the elevator shaft, when the hallway disappears and you see the elevator in the distance with the unfortunate 5 passengers aboard, the first drop is imminent. When they drop out of sight in the distance then get ready and brace, as your turn to drop is next.
