Tokyo Disneyland is rumored to be sinking, according to Cyzo (July).

The Pirates of the Caribbean attraction will be re-opened on July 20 after refurbishment, but there's a rumor floating around that the ride had to be fixed because it wasn't, well, floating.

"Tokyo Disneyland is built on reclaimed land, so it's only natural that it sinks, but the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in particular is hard on the ground," an insider associated with the work being done on the attraction tells Cyzo. "The construction work we've been doing has been to upgrade the ride, but it's also been about the subsidence."

Tokyo Disneyland has constantly been beset by rumors about its Atlantis-like demise. Throughout its history, though, it has never provided a public explanation for any of the construction works that have gone on inside the park.

"Tokyo Disneyland regularly inspects and carries out repairs on all its facilities," a spokesman for Oriental Land Co., the company that runs Tokyo Disneyland, tells Cyzo. "We've taken into account from the start that the reclaimed land will subside, and when we do inspections we calculate how much the land has actually sunk and match that with our projections. But the idea that the upgrade of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride is because the land has sunk is absolutely groundless and a very unfortunate rumor."

Despite the risk that the land could literally disappear from underneath the feet of the area's 700,000 daily visitors, local authorities don't seem particularly perturbed about the situation.

"Chiba Prefectural Government's water safety and preservation section inspects the lie of the land every January. There are 17 zones within the prefecture that it examines, and over the past five years they've inspected every zone bar one," a spokesman for the Urayasu Municipal Government says.

Guess where the only zone that hasn't been inspected is? Maihama Zone One, the same place where Tokyo Disneyland can be found.

"Inspections are done together with the Geographical Survey Institute, and the main aim is to observe whether there have been any changes in the landscape," the local government official tells Cyzo. "There's nothing compulsory about the inspection at all." (By Ryann Connell)

No wonder the OLC are looking to expand to locations beyond TDR...

I don't think this should be much of a problem though, so long as they keep an eye on it. That piece of reclaimed land is having to hold a lot when you think about it - two theme parks, various transport, motorway, hotels... and the weight of OLC's vast bank vaults must be quite a load on it too. :P

Never trust 1970s construction!

LOL!!!!

I don't know what to say about the article though. So they inspected every zone, except the part where TD is. Hmm, very smart!
So in the end every attraction you'll visit in TD will have an Atlantis themeing.

Although: I'd like to visit Tokyo Disney Sea before it's under the sea. I should have gone there 3 years later... :(
