According to Chirstian on the comments on that link above, the earthquake effect has gone and there is a big hole were the rock used to be  

I hope this isn't true as not only would it look awful, its a potent reminder of what occured in there to everyone that rides.

Any reason why they're doing all these refurbs?  Because they have the money?  Its 20 years anniversary?  Or because they feel they need to update?  I don't mind them doing it was just wondering why?

I think you got most of them! There seems to have been a realisation somewhere that they need to spend a bit more money to keep the park up to scratch. I don't know the exact details, but possibly a few more proactive people behind the scenes, pushing for things to get done. The 20th Anniversary is a convenient landmark to work towards.

There was a similar (smaller) effort before the 15th, but the park had wavering refurbishment levels for much of the last decade (since around the time they blew a load of money on a second park and Jay Rasulo became CEO), which might have dented its reputation. This feels like a big effort to finally get on top of things again.

I thought the restaurant is closed, but according to the picture it seems it is open. Does that mean the inside will not be refurbed?

Big Thunder looks great. Good work DLP painters. Now if they could just clean up the water in the lake, getting rid of that stagnant green look.

That green look, as has been pointed out elsewhere, is not because the river's dirty but because it was dyed that way...

As for why green instead of blue -- I'd guess that they chose that to convey the wilderness aspect of Frontierland as opposed to the (originally) storybook-blue waters of Fantasyland. And it probably does a better job of hiding the riverboat guide rails.

This is one of those things I'll never get. What's everyone's problem with that green water? It seems obvious to me that swimming pool blue would look horribly artificial. Rivers are murky the world over. And that shade of green is still a lot more cheerful than the fudges and slurries that actual rivers tend to be.

In my opinion it is just a bit too much green. It doesn't look naturally, it looks like the river is dead. I just looked at my WDW pictures and in Florida the water looks a lot nicer.

And please Disney clean the river. MAybe they have already done that but last year there was so much trash in the water.

Even the water in fantasyland is that horrible green shade.
