Title: Captain Hook's Pirate Ship - 2011 refurbishment
Post by: Anthony on January 27, 2010, 09:23:58 PM
What a nightmare it must be for DLP - you finally get the treehouse and labyrinth up to scratch and meanwhile the pirate ship starts to look like this:

A good paint job is needed here.
What exactly is happening under the ship?

Well you can see the concrete platform the ship is sitting on. Either the water level is lower than it should be or some boards that were covering the gap have gone.

Here's how it looked in 1992:

Anyone know when and why the colour was changed, getting rid of the black across the middle?

Post by: CentralPlazaPerson on January 27, 2010, 09:37:00 PM
I wouldn't think the water levels are lower or are they?  :|
All I know is that strip across the middle with no colour needs to be painted along with the rest of the ship.

Woah, the ship really is in bad condition.  I knew it was in bad need of a re-paint but now it's just screaming for some attention.  It looks even worse when you compare it to that 1992 picture, the ship looks beautiful in that picture.

My guess is that water level has lowered over the years, it wouldn't be impossible to happen.

Oh dear, it's in a very sad state indeed. Let's hope whoever is in charge pulls their finger out and gives the ship the same treatment as the treehouse and the labyrinth.

It's such a shame because the ship shouldn't have ever gotten into this state. Something should have been done a long time ago. I hope all of the current maintenance problems are fixed before the 20th anniversary, wouldn't that be great?

Now Disney should put all new attractions on hold and should use the money for refurbishment of the whole resort. That's really a bad show!!!

What do you mean by "you finally get the treehouse and labyrinth up to scratch " - in January hadly any of the effects were working in the Labyrinth...

I thought it looked quite pretty all frozen in last Saturday.

It reminded me of the scene from the live action Peter Pan movie where the ship is frozen in and everything starts to melt and get summery when Pan returns from Neverland with the Darlings.

QuoteI thought it looked quite pretty all frozen in last Saturday.

Yeah, it looks nice from a distance, up until you get closer and realize that Captain Hook has been hunting Peter Pan for quite some years without returning to his ship.

Not that I would consider buying something from the "Galley" in the ship, but does somebody know if it has been open for the last 15 years or so? :)

I've seen it open a couple of times last year.  It was open in August for sure.
And I saw it open on of the two days I was there in October as well.
It wasn't open in November, and I didn't check earlier this month so I couldn't tell.

Has anyone seen the ship open in the last six months?

Every time that I'm there I check, but not in the morning or the afternoon. And I've been three times this year.

I just went a couple of days ago and it wasnt open. I went on the tour guide and the guides didnt seem to think that the ship was being painted any time soon. But the playground next to it was being painted so maybe they'll move onto the ship when they're done.

The Pirates' Beach refurbishment was scheduled, but there's no work planned on the ship this fiscal year.  I heard rumours it might be refurbished in FY 11.

The ship was closed for guests last year, don't expect to see it reopen any time soon.

Really? Really really?? Is that certain??? I just can't believe it! This is soooooooo great news, in fact best news since ... well, I don't know when. They really want to polish everything for the 20th, this is awesome. The castle, Big Thunder Mountain, Captain Hooks ship - all are being refurbished extensively next year! They finally got their priorities right.

I'm so pleased - I remember playing on this as a child when I first went and was gutted when after over 10 years it was closed on our visit. I took my partner and was gutted we couldn't go on it and look over Adventure Land from it. It looked so tired, like if you stood on it it would fall apart.

I agree with you. They wasted all that money on stupid toy story rides when Disneyland is rotting away. Insted of adding more ugly rides, fix the old ones and make them look great again! Disney thinks europeans are blind by letting a great park turn into a renovation project and by building those ugly booring toy story things in WDS.

Finally!  :D/  =D>  But...it took to long. I was really shocked by the stadium of the ship. It looks like you better stay away cause something of it could break and damage your head every moment. EVERYTHING of the ship is damaged. EVERYTHING! YES it´s great that they refurb it now...erm...in februar 2011 but that shouldn´t we get a park (AND RESORT AREA!!) were we don´t are the first people knowing that something need a refurb? We shouldn´t even realise that something could need a refurb. In my opinion the refurb date for captain hook´s ship was around summer 2008 not winter 2010/11.

Finally!! It was about time.

I can't agree more with you. It would have been better to refurbish the parks, the hotels, DV and the resort area with the money spent on TSPL.

Like Riebi already said, the area between the parks and DV is in such a bad condition. Does this area belong to Disney or to the French State? I'm asking this, because there are always French poilce men patrolling. So maybe it belongs to the State and so Disney doesn't spend any money on it.
Title: Re: Captain Hook's Pirate Ship
Post by: Clara2141 on July 19, 2010, 08:29:26 PM
I might be wrong but I think it belongs to the train station - hence all the people trying to sell you tat when you come out of the park. Blummin' barking dogs etc. Disney don't own it and hence can't move them on.

TimmytimmyTimmy-agree with you there, I havent been for ages but the photos of the park in such a state is so sad.
It is great news the ship is going to get its mych needed makeover!
I wouldnt be surprised if the ship needed replacing in places because of damp, but to replace the whole thing would be one big job. But sometimes replacing the complete thing can be the cheaper alternative

I really hope they return the colour scheme to how it is in those 1996 photos - more red at the top, a brighter beige wood colour all over, a white coat on the masts. It looks far more like something out of Peter Pan, giving a better bridge with Fantasyland. The mermaid also stands out much more in old photos.

When did the colours change?

Adventureland in Paris is the best looking Adventureland of all. But Disney has to understand that building such a place means keeping it. Disneyland should never be just a themepark. It should always be that speacial place that everybody can like. A rotting ship belongs on the bottom of the ocean.
When they refurb it I hope they add something to the area to make it feel more new:)

I honestly think it has deteriorated VERY quickly. I really don't remember it being that bad last summer but when I saw it yesterday I was very surprised by the state of the paintwork. Has the winter in France been as harsh as it was in the UK? Perhaps that contributed to it somehow?

I checked my photos from last year - it needed a paint job but it was no where near as bad as it is now. Definitely got really bad, really quick. Presumably some harsh weather has taken its toll.

Yeah clearly they can't do that outside refurb over the winter so it's just going to have to survive until then.

As I said previously, I think it went off really badly over last winter but it definitely appears that most of the damage is basically cosmetic. Fingers crossed therefore that it can be fairly easily fixed.

The bottom of the boat has deteriorated massively in just a couple of months. Back in late August the wood had only collapsed on the far left, now it's right along the bottom. And there's that one panel which is still just hanging right off... disgusting, really.

If they're seriously waiting till February they'll be lucky to have a ship still standing there.

Will the refurbishment require the whole lagoon to be emptied? Is that even possible?

I'm guessing the ship has suffered some bad structural damage in the poor weather and is therefore beyond saving. Perhaps this is why they haven't bothered with repairs; they knew that a new one would be coming in long ago.

Whilst I think the Black Pearl would look incredible because it's an awesome piece of design (and it would fit with PotC better than Captain Hook's galley!), the galley should probably remain for traditions sake.

The Black Pearl looks great, but it wouldn't fit there. Skull Rock isn't featured in any PotC movie, because like the ship the rock belongs to Peter Pan. So that wouldn't make any sense. It would be the same if Disney would add Captain Hook to PotC. It doesn't fit, because it is a different movie and so I think Skull Rock and the Galley should belong to the Neverland part of Adventureland and not mixed with other movies. But that's just my opinion.
Unfortunately Disney of today is run by the consumer products departement, so I can imagine that the Black Pearl could be installed instead of Captain Hook's Galley. How many young people know the Peter Pan movie anymore, but everyone knows PotC and so people will buy more PotC merchandise.

While obviously I am Peter Pan fan and want the ship to stay Captain Hook's ship.  If they did change it, it would semi make sense with Pirates right across from it... especially if the rumors of a PotC refurb with the Movie overlays (like the US/Tokyo parks) for the 20th are true.  Still think it makes much more sense as Captain Hook's ship with Skull Rock next to it so hopefully it will stay that way :)

Besides, they need to leave it there to respect the transition from Fantasyland to Adventureland; in Fantasyland you have the Peter Pan ride, and then when you cross over to Adventureland, you have Captain Hook's ship and Skull Rock; through Peter Pan and Captain Hook you have a perfect link between Fantasyland, and the pirates of Adventurland.  If I remember right, making this transition was one of the reasons behind the swap of Adventureland with Frontierland in Paris (the order of the lands is inversed in the other parks)

I didn't know that, but it makes sense. The transitions from one land to another are very vell executed in Paris.

I believe the transition is there on the Pinocchio side too, with the covered seating area of Au Chalet de la Marionnette representing Gepettos ship destroyed by Monstro?

I'd hate to see the Galley replaced by the Black Pearl, it's be much too dark against the rockwork. I'd love to see it as a 'version 2' with interactive features, cannons (water?) that guests can fire, wheels that you can turn and raise skeletons holding treasure chests from the deep, and maybe in the vein of next years theme, a Captain Hook meet and greet?

Too much to ask?

I think with the amazing things they did at the Space Mountian que in WDW and the Disney Dream Cruise ship some interactive thing on the new ship is not to much to ask for!

I never noticed the destroyed ship from Pinocchio. But Im realy curious to check it now! Black Pearl is a no go. A massive no-go from my perspective. The transition form Fantasyland to Adventure land is amazing the way it is!

The refurbishment teams are replacing all wooden elements on façades and attractions that are extremely exposed to weather and water by resin (which can deal with all of these elements).  So that's why they're replacing the entire ship. :-)

Are there already attractions that use this material? What exactly is resin? Is it like the material that was used at WDW for the castle and the Main Street buildings? Will the ship still look natural?

So it seems there will be no Balck Pearl in Adventureland when Disney is just replacing the wooden elements of the ship.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Black Pearl replica, as it would be something unique to Disneyland, and while I agree it wouldn't fit with skull rock, we are made to suspend our belief throughout the parks. Having said that, I would equally welcome the return of the Galley, and isn't there a new Peter Pan happening next year? Maybe it will be similar to the Peter Pan show from a few years ago.

Yes, you're right, on the Fantasyland side of the restaurant you have the cute side of the Chalet de la Marionette, with the Pinocchio murals and the bright colours, and on the Adventureland side you have Monstro's belly and what remains of the Gepetto's ship wreck, with the barrels, broken sails... It's really well done.

That makes a lot of sense. The problem of the weather and water isn't exactly going to go away so far better to come up with a more permanent solution than have to keep repairing it.

I don´t think so, there is still a lot to do in this park, yeah now they do the Castle and the fantasyland floor, then the pirate ship, great, but whats with the rest of the park?

don´t get me wrong, its great they do this, but it comes a bit late....

Isn´t it a shame, that the ship hasn´t get his refurb yet? It looked horrible in 2007, it looked sad in 2008 and in 2009, 2010 and 2011 it looked simply disgusting. And we don´t talk about a dark corner like a former fantasyland skyway station at DL C. It´s the centerpiece of the pirate area.

They should better start sooner then later. Wasn´t the start date 1. 02? Were are the workers?

It's odd but I'm even excited by the idea of them taking the old ship down. To me, that ship is so integral to a DLP holiday and I would often just enjoy finding different views from which to look at it. That's why in it's current disrepair I'll happily wait a few months with no ship to see it back to it's glory.

As long as it comes back. When I was a kid, we had one in Fantasyland in Disneyland. It then disappeared during the remodel of Fantasyland in 1981/2, they were supposed to have it, but it was dropped by accident and never came back. That is why I was so overjoyed to see it in DLP in 1992. But yes, it needs some major TLC - could have been avoided with regular maintenance.

Beginning of May, now gone too!
Will they really refrub something like this over peak season? It's so prominent in the the area the visual impact will be significant. I'm starting to wonder if this won't be delayed until after Summer. Which would be a downer as we plan to go for Halloween again this year and I was really looking forward to seeing a nice new 'shiny' ship.

We saw a little sketch of the scaffolding during the refurbishments presentation (yeah, they even do concept art for refurbishments!). The scrim around the ship won't actually be an image of the ship itself (the shape of which would be hard to replicate in scaffolding) but a collection of old weathered masts and sails surrounding the site, like a number of shipwrecks have washed up into the area.

I wonder what will happen to the old ship? Perhaps they should sell pieces on eBay...

A lot but not exactly like the original colours. At the refurb meeting Peggie pointed us to some new gold details, that I think were particularly at the back of the ship around the top of the stern (such as on those swirly details with a natural wood colour above), which they want to use to show that these pirates are actually successful, overflowing with riches. So it won't just have bold colours with more red and black but shimmering gold too!

I'll try to remember the exact words there...

Someone asked a question along the lines of "Will this still definitely be a ship from the Peter Pan universe, or will it be tied into Pirates of the Caribbean, with Jack Sparrow?". Peggie Fariss answered rather ambiguously, saying the ship would still be based on Peter Pan "but we might find a way to fit Jack Sparrow in there somewhere".

Looking back, I don't think she was talking about the ship at all but the new animatronics. That one went right over our heads! And in fact I think Sparrow being added to the ride makes him having a bigger presence outside less likely, because they won't want to detract from his appearance there.

There have been fish in the water for quite some time. I have this picture of them from last June.
Makes me wonder... when they drained the Adventureland waterways recently to prepare for the scaffholding to go up... what did they do with the fish?! LOL Did they go round trying to catch them all?! LOL!

That's a strange rumour and I think it is a joke that people can go fishing in Adventureland.

Well in Disneyland California, in the early years they offered fishing. But never at DLP. However, the fish help with cleaning the ponds and lakes.

DLRP should consider putting fish into the Rivers of the Far West.

Yep... actually, from what I hear the Rivers of the Far West have naturally developed into a self-regulating ecosystem over the years. The most prominent fish species seems to be catfish. I've even seen one or two caught by the resident herons, if not by park guests...

As far as I'm aware the Rivers of the Far West are dirty through theming, as the water both matches the sort of river you would see in the area, and also the murky colour covers the tracks for the boats.

Captain Hook's Ship wise, it's great to see this get cleaned up. I've walked past the area many times, and I still don't 'get' what the Ship is other than a nice addition to the area. I hope in the future it's more clear what it is, and that it goes back to having the Pan characters on it!

I'm also wondering if they are really going to replace the whole ship. It doesn't make sense to build scaffolding around it when they are going to rebuild it. Maybe they will save some parts for the new ship.
Title: Re: Captain Hook's Pirate Ship - 2011 refurbishment
Post by: Pete's Dragon on June 08, 2011, 03:06:32 PM
I'm guessing they need the scaffolding so they can dismantle it a bit at a time safely. The last thing they want is splinters of wood flying everywhere because they decided to take a wrecking ball to it. Also I can't see there being much wrong with the sails and masts, so they may be keeping those and building  a more water-resiliant hull.

The second and third pictures are really grim

It looks as if they removed the wood and the cannon fell down.

Also if they are putting holes in, do you reckon that is so they can hold up scaffolding

We were told quite definitely it would be completely rebuilt.

I'd imagine in the long run they hope it'll work out much more cost-effective to replace the whole ship now, with a design or materials that better withstand the weather, rather than continually throw money at touching up and repairing the original structure (not that they've done that for about 8 years).

Yes, and I think it isn't too long ago. I'd say 5 years? But you could only go on the "ground floor", not even to the steering wheel if I remember right. But nevertheless, it was awesome...Let's hope, the new ship will be as great as this one in its better days and we will be able go on deck again

I'd missed that, I thought it was announced they were completely rebuilding.
Not that I mind, I love the Galley and look forward to seeing it complete, though it won't be on our next visit unfortunately.
They seemed to delay the start so long though, they then seemed to take 2 months to get scaffolding up, they should talk to the Chris down the end of my road, he's have sorted in out over the weekend  :D

dunno, I saw a couple of guys moping about on it when we visited at the beginning of the month.
The other thing though is that I've seen no sign of any rebuild at all, it just looks like the structure has been taken back to the bare material for a repaint.
I guess the bottom half (which suffered the worst damage) will be completely replaced, but I think the main ships structure hasn't changed at all.

I've seen a couple of guys working there two weeks ago, the machinery sounds were quite strange in Adventureland ;)
But I also think that a replacement won't happen, it looks more like an complete refurbishment.
By the way, the area looked quite strange this year. The pirate ship totally covered with scaffoldings, scaffoldings at La Cabane des Robinsons...I hope they will be finished soon ;)
Title: Re: Captain Hook's Pirate Ship - 2011 refurbishment
Post by: claire2281 on October 26, 2011, 02:07:21 PM
I think doing a complete replacement would have been daft. I mean, if they strip it all back and the underlying structure is completely fine then what's the point in replacing that? Might as well save some money to spend elsewhere.

I wonder if they weren't really sure themselves how much work they were going to have to do until they started taking it apart hence the vagaries about when it will be finished.

We now have our date of completion: the 24th of this month! (Which is apparently the date that three other big projects will be completed. Any ideas what they could be? Central Plaza?)

Also, the sails and other features are back!

Looks like they aren't putting black sails (black-pearl-style) as suggested by some rumors.

Sorry, if this was questioned already, but does anybody know, whether you will be allowed to "board" Captain Hook's Pirate Ship when it's refurbished or will it only be used as background for the Peter-Pan-Show?

Post by: Josh on March 07, 2012, 09:18:22 PM
I should think you'll be able to go on it, yeah. But they've never mentioned it. :)

It won't be used for the Peter Pan show, though. Sadly, it had its last show a couple of days ago. :(

I'm really looking forward to see the ship again (hopefully in July!!)- refurbished and without fences or anything.

@insidedlparis is reporting that all the masking has come down, the ship is now visible, although still surrounded by scaffolding.

Can I just say, a big thank you to @insidedlparis for all the information and I would advise everybody to follow their twitter account!

This looks absolutely amazing - well worth the wait judged from these pictures!

And I am really happy they decided against, what has probably only ever been fan made rumours, about changing the ship into a Black Pearl theme. It belongs to mr. Hook!

Speaking of which, has anyone noticed any differences, so far? There's something different about it, but I can't put my finger on what it is...

Wow you really don't realise how badly it needed a refurb until you look at the before pictures. It may have taken longer than expected but it definitely needed doing and there was no point in doing half a job. I can't wait until they take the rest of the scaffolding down so we can see it properly but it's looking really great.

The new ship does look great.

The thing is, this being Disneyland, it should look great all the time, and they never should've let it deteriorate and rot away like they did.

But... well done to all the craftsmen and artists who restored it.

The Galley looks great

It's open to guests

Great work, it looks amazing. But please, don't let it deteriorate again. The ship immediately before the refurb was just dreadful. And good that they maintained their sails. This ship belongs to Captain Hook, not Johnny Depp.
