Title: Blast from the Past - Vintage EuroDisney Paris 1994
Post by: Anonymous on May 15, 2007, 07:04:27 PM
Having got all my recent holiday pictures out of the way, I've finally gotten around to scanning in some old photographs from Disneyland Paris back in 1994.

This was my first ever visit to Disneyland Paris, just two years after the Park had opened. I'd persuaded a group of friends to go across for a long weekend on a coach trip, organised by a local tour operator.

Unfortunately, the planning of the trip was not the greatest, and there were a few disasters, but the trip to Disneyland was still magical.

At this time, there was only 1 park open, the Disneyland Park. I don't recall the Disney Village being as developed as it is now, although it appears bigger than I remember in the brochures. That being said, I only briefly passed through on my way into the Park.

The pictures are not as good as my recent photo's, taken as they are on a 35mm automatic camera. My photography has improved over recent years, and so please excuse these somewhat amateurish attempts, complete with off centre images, and people's heads being caught in front of the subject in some cases, or out of focus images. In some ways, this adds to the charm of these pictures though.

In the pictures of Discoveryland, Space Mountain was only just being built, and you can still see scaffolding in some shots.

There are also some scans of old style park tickets (these were like a plastic credit card), and the old park guide.

Hope you enjoy the pictures:-

Best. Post. Ever!

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this, Dark_Prince!  I love seeing old photos from DLP pre-2000 (my first visit).  Those parade photos are priceless - knights on horses in front of Sleeping Beauty?! Wow!! :D

I got these albums out again recently, not having seen them for some time. (I think the last time I looked was when I first went back in March 06). I was quite surprised to see the Knights on real horses - I'd completely forgot about that. And the old parade floats, and The Little Mermaid float with the boat instead of the clamshell.

And although they're really fuzzy, and got the backs of people's heads on them, I love the pics of the old Beauty and the Beast show. For those wondering, this used to be held in the Videopolis theatre where Legend of the Lion King plays now! Of course, The Lion King hadn't come out at this time!

Apologies if they take awhile to load. I decided against doing them as thumbnails, as I have with my recent pics, as they aren't as big, and I thought the thread had a bit more impact like this, and was worth the wait.

 :)

Well, I've been off work sick for a couple of days. Not really felt up to revision today as I've had a bit of a migraine, so I thought I'd scan and upload these photo's which I've been promising to do for a while.

Ah, the days when DLP had quality entertainment and streetmousphere.  Sadly by the time a number of the fans on the web had gone, most of this had disappeared.  Oh, well.  There are encouraging signs that DLP may be bringing the Disney experience back!

amazing pics dark, and the cameras not show bad, it amazes me all the detail disney can put into things when your looking at the old floats, the dumbo float made me laugh, but when you think of the peter pan float in 1994 and todays peter pan float in OUAD parade, how they are the same film but the floats nothing like each other , i suppose thats the  magic of disney  :)

Well, I was very impressed with the Park on my first visit, back in 1994. I would have been 24 then. Sadly it took me 12 years to finally return to the Park, though I'm making up for it now.

I must admit, that although I really enjoyed it in March 06, I didn't think the Park was as clean as it had been in the early days, and I thought some of the lustre had worn off. Having said that, it made enough of an impression on me to want to return this year.

But this year, I thought things had really improved, and they seemed to be gearing up for a wonderful anniversary year, and things were returning to the parks earlier glory. But with more attractions, and more characters. I was so impressed in March this year, that I very quickly booked to go back in September.

Glad everyone's enjoying the pics. It makes the effort this afternoon worthwhile.

Thanks a lot for these pictures! I looked at my old photos too sometime ago, they are also from 1994-1998 I guess. So that's the park as I know it. But your pics are way better than mine, because mine show mostly family and strange places like bridges and benches and stuff. I actually didn't know they don't use the credit card tickets anymore, what do you get now? And I think my sister also has some old guides somewhere.

The tickets these days are just a piece of thin card. They are okay, but when you're there for a week, and using the ticket daily, and hopping between parks, and getting fastpasses, they can soon start to wear. I wish they did these old style ones still with pics of the characters on, because I think they're quite collectable. Love the Ariel one I've got.

Hi all!

My fiance showed me this thread a little while ago, I just had to reply!

I first went to DLRP in 1992 - about a month after it opened! I have loads  of photos that my parents and I took, but can only find one on the computer! Disaster! I'll upload some more when I go home at the end of my university term in a week or so - for now here's the only one I could find!

(//http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t202/desu69/th_photos034.jpg) (//http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t202/desu69/photos034.jpg)

I believe we went in late July/early August, I would have just turned 8, I remember it being boiling hot, and there being lots of teenagers barging around the queues pushing through and the cast members doing nothing to stop them

It was absolutely packed the whole time we were there, we stayed in a hotel just outside Paris with a package deal - had a day in Disneyland and two in Paris.

There wasn't very much in the Disney Village, and I remember a very long walk to and from the car park - the moving walkways were broken!

Anywhat, as I say, I'll post some more as and when I find them! There'll also be some from 1996/7, 2000 and 2001 somewhere but I'll try not to get them muddled up!
Title:

I remember Disney Village being very sparse back in 1994. Although, actually, looking at the map in the brochure, it seems as if most of the stuff was there, so the memory definitely plays tricks.

Are the moving walkways still there? My first visit we stayed off site, and came in to the resort via the car park, and moving walkways. But the last couple of times I've stayed at Disney hotels, so have always walked down to Disneyland via Disney Village.

Yes the moving walkways are still there in the carpark to the resort hub.  It's really great seeing all these old photos.  Cool to see dlrp in a new view in old scanned photos as compared to today's usual digital photos.

Well, I think the main differences are Space Mountain is still under construction in those photo's.

And the parade. There were changes to some of the floats. Ariel's float had a boat on it rather than the clamshell.

There was a different Snow White float, and various other floats which disappeared over the years like the Peter Pan, Jungle Book, Dumbo and Pinocchio floats.

Some of the floats were used differently, like the Sleeping Beauty float which had Philip fighting the dragon, and had Aurora underneath the dragon, in a different dress, which she never wore in the film!

They also used real horses in the parade!

Having said that, I do prefer the detail in my scanned photo's. But I hope everyone enjoyed seeing my old photo's, and I thought it was a nice time to bring out these old photo's, as the park is celebrating it's 15th Anniversary.

It's always nice to see a thread greeted with a lot of enthusiasm from people, especially one which has had a lot of work put into it.

I loved those pumpkin outfits clothed by the dancers before the cart of Cinderella.
And I enjoyed the Beauty and the Beast Show also!
I want that show baaaaaaaaaaack! 8)
Cool pictures.
I still have a VHS of Disneyland 1993!

Yes, totally.
In holland there's a 'Broadway' musical too from the Beauty and the Beast. But there's nothing more magical than a show from Disneyparcs self!

Yayyyyy!

Hope they have a gorgeous Belle!

I saw it last year, and she was brilliant - it was an actress called Jo Gibb.

I really LOVE those photos! So interesting to have a comparisom of the two different eras. I actually really like the old Ariel float with the boat instead of the clamshell  :D  Beauty and the Beast hasnt really changed has it, apart from the base of the float? Or am I wrong ? Intersting how some floats have gone and been replaced with others.

Beauty and the Beast was identical. I'm not sure which version of the Ariel float I prefer. It was nice to see her in human form, but I think I like having the mermaid Ariel in the parade.

For me, the most interesting thing is the real horses in the parade.

I never actually had a go on Star Course, so I'm not sure what you were mean't to do. It's a bit of a shame that it's just a big empty space there now.

You had stand on this boards there and drive against the others by moving your body. The other was on the big screen as little space ships.

Something other: My first Disneyland brochure! It´s the one from 1992 and the most photos aren´t from Disneyland Paris but from the US resorts.

Oh a great topic. I first visited DLP in 1993. At this time there was no SM there. I still remember how it looked like as it was in its building process. And I really miss all the great parades from the early years. There were often little parades for the new animation movies. There was a Hunchback of Notre Dame Parade, a Hercules Parade, a Pocahontas Parade and they had a nice Summer Parade with a very nice Dschinnie float and the Gummybears. I have photos of these parade, but I don't know how to post them here. And I still remember some female dancers from the Christmas Parade. They had some beautiful green and red dresses. But there is still one float in the Christmas Parade today which is very Vintage. The float of Santa Clause is still the same, which they used in the first years. Oh yes and the Beauty and the Beast Show was gorgeous. I have seen it so often, I lost count. I loved the final scene, with the dancers in pink dresses and Belle with her glittering gold dress. Wonderful and truly magical. And there was an other great show too. La Livre Magique de Mickey. The show took place at the Royal Castle Stage. And it was soooo great. With a big storybook, which was in fact the background for the show. And turned its page for every new act. I loved that show sooo much.

Yes good old times. And in fact, it seems like DLP is now after 15 years returning back to its old glory. But one thing has totally changed. In the early years DLP never was so crowded like it is now.

Wow, blast from the past indeed :)

My first trip was in 1995 at the tender age of 11, and I vaguely remember it - I don't think I have many photos from it sadly as I lost the film over the years! I have plenty from subsequent trips though. :) But I remember things like the plastic park passes (with the Lion King characters on them at the time) and Buffalo Bill tickets, the amazing Main St Electrical Parade and some of the things we bought (plastic 101 Dalmatians jewellery!). I do have a photo of my friend and I with Perla the mouse at our character breakfast - hard to believe it was 12 years ago!

I believe my first trip was in 1992 or 93 when I was only 2 so i don't really remember much. I remember more form my trip in 95. It's funny, because it all seemed so giant back then ( I suppose I was much smaller). It's changed so much in 15 years, what with new attractions and a new park, hasn't it.

Notice how even back then I had a tendency to focus on Belle with my pictures?

My obsession with her hadn't even kicked in really at that time - although Beauty and the Beast was always my favourite movie from being reintroduced to Disney when I was about 21 or 22.

Of course, my pictures have got a bit more sophisticated since then, and I've managed to get a bit closer to her too.  :D

While cleaning out some drawers this morning, I found an old Disneyland Paris guidebook from 1998 - and a show time schedule from august 1996...

Back in 1998, the big new thing was "The Wonderful World of Disney Parade" (from March 30), followed by "Winnie the Pooh and Friends, Too" (from April 1) at the "Theatre du Chateau".
The "Festival des Fleurs" enchanted guests from May 1 to June 28 and Discoveryland welcomed "Disny's California Dream" form August 22 to September 27 with basketball and skateboard artists, cheerleaders, music and palm trees...
The Halloween Season back then only lasted two weeks... from October 17 to November 1 ...

Going further back, Disneyland Paris presented several long gone shows and parades back in the summer of '96:

Twice each morning, "Good Morning Main Street" welcomed guests to the park, followed by two showings of another morning parade presenting Disney's latest stars: "Défilé Toy Story".
In Fantasyland, you could watch "En Scène, s'il vous plait !" at the Fantasy Festival Stage and "Merlin l'Enchanteur" at the castle courtyard, while the Theatre du Chateau still presented "Le Livre Magique de Mickey".
Videopolis was home to "La Belle et la Bete" and the Lucky Nugget Saloon's big attraction was "Lilly's Follies", a "high-kickin' Can-Can show"...
At the Chaparral Theater, guests could "imagine themselves in Hollywood behind a camera shooting the true love story between Pocahontas and John Smith" in "Pocahontas - Le spectacle".

At 15:15 "La Grande Parade Estivale" moved from Fantasyland to Main Street, U.S.A. and "La Parade Électrique" enchanted guests in the evening, before the sky above Frontierland came alive in the "La cavalcade de feu" ... a fireworks show to the sound of western music.

Sounds like a fun day, don't you think?

Honestly... it's been more than 11 years and all those Disney visits start to blur into each other... I don't remember watching the show from inside the park. Back then, we stayed at the Sequoia and my parents decided to watch the nightly fireworks from one of the hotel's balconies...

I wonder if this was a way to have bigger fireworks, as the launch bases would not be located too close to the town.  :?:

Ah - Lilly's Follies - wonderful wonderful show - I have a video of it somewhere.  It was a dinner show so the only way you could see it was by having a meal whilst the show was on.  Loads of wild west atmosphere.

I also loved le livre magique de micky too - and the show that was then on in Videopolis - a sort of tour round the park (have also seen this on the Stage by Fantasyland Station.

This is what DLP did best in 1992 the shows and parades were outstanding - there was a band that used to play near the entrance and band also in the loading by for Molly Brown/Mark Twain.

1992 was an excellent year ....

I have a very very big box full of bits and pieces from the past 15 years - everything from paper bags, plastic bags, cutlery (knife, fork and spoon had different character head on them), guides, even little sticks they put into burgers to keep paper on in different colours for different sauces, etc.

The Wild West Show used to give you a programme giving details of the show which your servers would sign - have lots of these and a pair of Eurodisney Glass Boots which were given to us for free by an English Bar Man!

June :D

I've always wondered the same thing as well.  I've seen park maps frm before SM but it isn't the same.  I heard people thought it would fit in the space where it is now but from the map it looks like there is plenty of space but then again maps can be unrealistic

you can get a first impression by the promos of 1992 of Discoveryland:

//http://www.stage6.com/Disneyland-Resort-Paris/video/1147820/Discoveryland-promo-1992

The complex fits very well in the gap of the maps because it wasn´t just space mountain, it was also the loading station and the nautilus.
At the place for space mountain wasn´t something special. there were flowers and bushes like at fantasyland were they hold the gap for the beauty and beast stage.

Also this worth quality video has an short view of the location. (Maybe bit more interesting how Disney Village has looked  )
