He's very rare actually.

Another character spotted: during the press event Jiminy Cricket was out on the Mark Twain, holding one of the Celebration Candles!  (Will get pics later)

And the Fairy Godmother was apparently out yesterday (probably at l'Auberge) as she was watching the parade near the castle.

April 8:

- Merlin l'Enchanteur show was on due to high capacity of the park.

- Prince Eric & Ariel, Fairy Godmother and Belle & Beast Prince (among others) were at l'Auberge de Cendrillon due to the new characters dining experience.

:D Can you tell us more about this new character dining experience? And where is l'Auberge de Cendrillon? *Fails at French names*
Title:
Post by: DisneyBud on April 11, 2007, 02:34:56 PM
It is the Cinderella themed restaurant in the courtyard at the back of the castle
Title:
Post by: Masamune on April 11, 2007, 11:49:07 PM
:D Oooh, I know which one you mean now. Thanks!

 Looking at the thread specifically about the restaurant though, I doubt we'll be going there. 48 Euros per person is a ridiculous price to pay for food.

Well they have been releasing the old Disney TV animations on DVD. There have been quite a few out in the US, and they finally made it to R2 earlier this year with the first volumes of Duck Tales and Rescue Rangers, so there's a good chance that kids will know who they are.

Does the park ever, or has it ever, acknowledged Disney's sequels? I know characters from Toy Stroy 2 are in the parks sometimes, but what about the animated movies? I looked for some pictures, but could not find any.

Anyone have any info on this ?

A long time ago....in 1995. I saw the Gummy Bears, yes yes in Disneyland Paris, and Chip'n'Dale as the rescue ranger with the shirt and the hat as in the cartoonsk, in the parade.

I would be happy to see Roger Rabbit back, it was since Toon Circus he was out.

When I went we got every Princess we saw apart from Aurora because we refused to join the queue for a 3rd time.
We also met Winnie, Tigger, Eeyore, Abu, Jafar, Mr Smee, Bell & beast, Cinderella & Charming, Ariel, Snow White, Donald, Daisy, Mickey, Minnie, Gepetto, Goofy, Pluto, Perla & Suzy, Tweedle Dum & Dee, Chip & Dale, Cruella De Vil and some others I cant think off the top of my head.
Hook kept running away from us, Chicken Little stormed off as all these kids were swarming around him, Scrooge McDuck walked off somewhere and my friend wouldnt go near the Queen of Hearts!
We saw lots of others in the parades and to queue up for etc...not sure if any of them are rare though! It was my first ever vist.

I dont think I saw any rares when I went, I was Pinocchio, Mr Smee, Tigger and Pluto.

I liked Pinocchio because I made a comment about all the kids pushing saying 'This must be what they call Organised Chaos' and he nodded and came over to me to sign my book :D

I have a question concerning a Character ;):

Is it possible to meet Meeko (and Pocahontas) somewhere, or are they out randomly? And what about cuddly Baloo? :)

I met Meeko in September 2004, but it wasn't a digital picture we took. It was in front of Colonel Hathi's Pizza Outpost...

I hope someone of you knows :)!
Title:
Post by: Kristof on December 10, 2007, 12:05:35 PM
Meeko isn't that common to do sets.  I've seen him around Disneyland Park a few times at Fantasyland, Main Street and Adventureland (somehow not at Frontierland where he belongs, lol).

Baloo is usually on the Characters' Express and quite often at Hathi's.
Title:
Post by: Nala_84 on December 10, 2007, 12:56:22 PM
Thank you, raptor. Good to hear that Baloo is out more often :)! But are there also frequent times for him, or is it unsure when & where to meet him?

Do you know something about Pocahontas? :)

Oh, and what I still don't understand: Some forum members told that they met princesses (and other characters?) at a corner of Fantasyland. Is that a "fixed" meeting point?? When can I expect to meet characters there?
Title:
Post by: Kristof on December 10, 2007, 02:52:49 PM
The princesses have short meet 'n' greets before or after they leave l'Auberge de Cendrillon, but they don't have an official time schedule for that part of the park.

Pocahontas: extremely rare.  Saw here only once at Fantasyland. (see the PM gallery).

Baloo: just check out the time schedule for Characters' Express, he's on it most of the time!

This past Saturday was pretty good for "on-set" characters just walking around various lands.

They Included: Pheobus, Esmerelda, Clopin, Gaston, Mary and Burt, Peter Pan, Wendy, Buzz, 7 Dwarfs and Snow White, Meg,Pocahontas, Aladdin and Jasmine ....

And don't forget Cinderella's Evil Stepmother and her 2 Ugly Sisters are coming to Disneyland Paris very soon... :D  :D

Edit: Nala, Last week Pocahontas was at Lucky Nugget at 1.15 and 2.15 and at her Village at 3.15 and 4.15, this could change everyday though.

Haha, that photo is sweet, Owain ;)!

So are there special times at the Auberge de Cendrillon when the Character Meals happen? And are there different princesses coming or all of them during one meal? The dinner is much too expensive for us, but I'd love to meet'n'greet the princesses before or after one dinner in December ;)! When i went in November i was gutted that i didnt get to meet any Princesses, cos of the queues. So we went for a meal at the Auberge de Cendrillon and i got to meet all of them. They all came to my table and i had a good chat with them (especially Snow White, she was gorgeous) and had photos taken with them all. It was one of my most favourite Disneyland experiences.

And Monday, Snow White was at the Princesses location with her Prince and the 7 Dwarfs!

It's great that Belle can be met in Fantasyland beside the Castle Stage!

Yes, but it won't be like this everyday, it was just because the Dwarfs were on set in Fantasyland while Snow White was on Castle Stage so they have brought the Dwarfs on the stage.

hello, i must admit great news

i was lucky to go to dlrp on the 4th-7th april

was wiked, and went on cast discount too! yay

but we were really lucky with charatcers aswell, we saw alot of the rare ones so really happy, was great seeing the  7 drawlfs out on meet and greet. Except we did have some trouble with them. ALso gaston, belle and beast too.......

i do have a question tho, everytime i go, i stay in the chyenne, fantastic hotel. and they have mickey, minnie goofy and pluto alot meeting, which is wiked. But this time we had chip and dale and also jessie. It was really odd, so i didnt kno if the charatcers now come under the park or they were just special ones. DOes anyone know what characters appear there now cos its all changed. hehe

Slight subject change but still characters, my niece is going later in the year and has already bought an autograph book. I have told her that not all characters are around and that some cant sign books. So that her mother can guide her away to avoid tears does anyone know which characters, due to costume, cant sign. I only know of Eyore and Sully.

Eeyore can sign. Just depends on what day you catch him. Also alot of the times his signatures are dreadful, but sometimes you'll catch him and his signature is perfect. Depends on the animator.

Sulley
King Louie
Buzz Lightyear

The rest are all capable of signing and are just being lazy.  :P

Hi,

I have been to Disneyland Paris 3 times before and never met a "human" character. On the new programme It says disney princess- Le Theatre du Chateau 11:30-13:15pm. Is this not the indoor venue where Winnie the pooh and friends show is usually held? I am wondering do you actually meet a princess or if it's some sort of show. It also has Mary Poppins in the Town Sqaure of Main street USA at  3 different time periods during the day. Since both these appearances are put in the meet and greet section and not under "shows"...Does that mean these are definate meet and greet times??

In the New Programme Jack Sparrow also has times for appearances, whereas the old programme used to say Appears at port from time to time.
Any tips on meeting unusual Characters?

thanks
Aveen x

The Disney Princesses do meet 'n' greets on the stage next to the Castle.  The Mary Poppins and the Sleeping Beauty shows always have meet 'n' greets afterwards.

You can also meet the princesses while having lunch at l'Auberge de Cendrillon.  Prince Caspian and the White Witch will also be on hand at Walt Disney Studios Park, in front of Rock 'n' Roller Coaster.

Hi,

I am going for a short trip next Thursday the 3rd of July until Sunday the 6th :) . I am sure the place will be packed. I don't worry about queues as much as getting near characters as most people push there little ones infront as though adults don't have a right to get photos taken with characters :x

Are there different Louie costumes then? The one I have photos with has moulded plastic hands that can't move to hold a pen.

We're going at a really busy time this year (August, but midweek) but hope we'll be able to get at least one character photo. For one thing, with DLRP not having photographers on Main Street the way the American parks do it's the only way to get a photo with me and my husband both together.

I got a Disney autograph book for my birthday this month so will pack it just in case.

When was the Last time that Esmeralda from the Hunchmack of Notre Dame was seen in the park? I would love if they had her as a more regular character. I know Pheobus was seen recently. Its a random thing, the stepmother and stepsisters.
I've never heard of them being present at the Auberge de Cendrillon.

Hope you get lucky and see them though!

I have a list - including Jack Sparrow, Pocahontas, Esmerelda. But every time we go, we tick off a few more characters  :D/ .

If you're character-spotting, 11am for about an hour seems to be a good time to go looking. Check out the area near IASW and Bella Notte in Fantasyland, also near Colonel Hathi's Pizza place in Adventureland, plus the bridge near the pirate ship (this seems to be a regular visiting place from Peter Pan, Wendy, Cpt Hook and Mr Smee). Also Jasmine and Aladdin are out from 11.30 for about half an hour in Adventureland too - if its not raining, you'll see them outside the Aladdins Passage attraction, if its raining they are at the entrance to the Agrabah Cafe.

Chicken Little is still about in the Studios - in summer season they do Good Morning Studios parade - Chicken Little is in that, and then the parade stops for autographs/photos.

I used to see Daisy Duck around the Studios loads - but we didn't see her anywhere at all last month.

Hi Gareth,
look for the characters Express(it runs every hour).Have a meal booked with characters.(different locations, can be booked in advance,)The phot locations, you` ll probably remember. And then there is said in an other post in this forum to look for characters opposite the Bella Notte pizzeria, Colonel Hathi`s or near the Pirate`s Ship. And in Aladin`s passage.
I hope this helps you alittle.

hey guys, thought id bring back the thread because its ledge!!!, but i just wanted to check that the characters are still coming at the small world gate area in the mornings, im sure they used to come out at 10.30 and 11.30, just woundered if anyone can confirm this, and what time they come out on main street as i forgot!, lol

ive been reading forums on the usa parks, and there charatcers coming out randomly have all been cut due to budget cuts, and that they dnt have the same charatcers as paris, so i just wanted to say well done paris for using more rare charatcers and lots of them!!!!, cudos to you!!!

im going march 31st, so very ecited, if anyone has anytimes that they come out of random places please let me know, like adventure land, outpost type places.

hehe cheers guys, i hope everyone is wicked and hate a good new year and xmas.

I think the thing we have to remember between DLRP and the American Parks is that what they class as rare characters arnt always rare over here.

It makes more sence for example that in DLRP the Robin Hood characters are out and about, or that Scrooge McDuck is seen wandering around because those characters realte to Disney. Disney are using the characters we as European might realte better to (at least thats my theory  )

I once saw someone who visits WDW on another site complain how they Never see Scrooge... Yet would could say 'We never see Flick!' But they do at Animal Kingdom. So its swings and roundabouts really.

I too hope though that DLRP doesnt cut the wandering Characters, there is nothing better than walking around the park and bumping into a character... Especially if its one of your favs!

yea tru...., but i just cant believe how they dont have any over there, like rafakki, or the villians, brother bear....., and face charatcers. drawlfs, just everything

its just weird to hear that the americans want to see charatcers that are never out, that paris has on a daily shedule. Robing hood, pinochio, and a few others as u said are never out in usa yet everyone wants to see... its just odd

but hey, does anyone know the times for random apperences in bella notte or where ever

I think you're still just about right with the characters coming out of the gate at IASW around 10.30, 11am ish. We've certainly seen loads in our visits around that time there. Also at around 11ish in Adventureland (Colonel Hathi's Pizza outpost) and last June we followed Cpt Hook, Mr Smee, Wendy and Peter Pan from there to the bridge near the pirates beach play area.
Apart from Gepetto (once only) and the scheduled meet n greets, I've never seen any characters on Main St or nearby  :( .
We've seen characters in Fantasyland, between IASW and the teacups, in the afternoons (around 2.30ish), several times.

And in the Studios there always seem to be characters around - either oustide Animagique, near Cinemagique, or in the area between the turnstiles and the entrance to Studio 1  :D

On Monday the 29th of December, they had a selection of characters out at the top of Main Street (around the tree) at the very end of the day, when the park closed... at 10pm! I'm not sure why they were out, surely they were slowing down the guests from leaving which is what they'd want them to do, and because I've never seen it before (I've seen Mickey waving bye on the Station Balcony, but never this). Nevertheless it was very cool to see a selection of character out at the end of the day (Minnie, Friar Tuck, King John, etc were all out) :)

I agree I'm kinda sick of seeing the same characters on the character express the past few years. the thing is the have some rarer characters but they hardly ever show them, like the dwarfs (who are in the show now at least), esmeralda, pocahontas, meeko, tinkerbell (only on fantilusion now) but there are loads I wish they had! Esp giselle!

No parks will ever have Giselle thanks to Amy Adams not allowing it.  (Damn her)

I'm hoping and praying for Pixie Hollow of somesort for the 20th Anniversary, its about time DLP got with the times and started following in the footsteps of the other parks.

Our park must have the most undated and least rare characters.  Its depressing when Kyra asks to see a certain character and they asks why are they not in DLP when they live there in the castle    (her words not mine lol)

She was in the park when the film was released but now she is nowhere to be found.  If you google, your find a lot of Americans talking about why Giselle isn't in the parks.

You also get them random monkeys from Jungle book etc... Ok they are cute to get a pic with but I would rather see the Rescuers or even Maid Marion.  They have even have Boo at the Block Party Bash in DHS.

I'd love to see the newer characters being shipped over more (e.g. the UP characters; Carl, Russel and Dug, and the Bolt characters; Bolt, Mittens and Rhino, are the latest examples). They always get them in the states, but a lot of them never make it to Paris. And I really don't understand why? Surely Walt Disney Pictures would want them in the parks to promote the film when it's out, so it shouldn't be a matter of DLP having to pay for them really should it? And on top of that, the changeable photolocation at the back of the Toon Studio is an ideal place for these newer characters too!

A giant billboard covering one of the Resorts iconic locations isn't a problem, but some new characters are apparently!?!

oh yeah them random monkeys, i forgot about them! got they are even worse as they dont even have a name! I wud luv maid marion actually and the rescuers!! I have often said the same about boo!!

butlin boy: yeah i agree with you!

Be nice to see some rare ones regularly around the park.

What a awesome pic of Chef Louie!

Hi.

Why wont Amy Adams allow it??? I love Enchanted!!!

Needed to bump this topic back up to ask a question! I used to love Ducktales as a kid, but the only character I've ever seen from that in DLP is Scrooge McDuck, and I know Launchpad is (or was) there but I've never seen him... Was wondering if anyone knew if Donald's nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie are ever out for meet 'n' greets in DLP? I'd love a pic with them if they were! :)

Launchpad is out sometimes... your best bet to find him is in the Disneyland hotel (either in the morning or dinner at Inventions) but he isn't out that often... he is also sometimes at the Hotel New York in the morning.

Currently Huey, Dewey, and Louie are only seen during special events and will sometimes be in the parade so sadly your chances of meeting them are very low :(  They have been out a few times (once last month at Cafe Mickey for lunch and once a few months ago in the Disneyland Hotel) that you could meet them but it is very much a case of being very lucky and being in the right place at the right time.  That being said... we have heard rumors that they are considering having them out at Halloween and Christmas this year... it isn't definite yet... so if that happens you may be able to meet them then :)

Here is a picture of them from a special version of Disney's Stars 'n' Cars last month:

You can meet Rapunzel at her special M&G location. In the summer, when I visited, she had a location near the Dumbo attraction, and Flynn came out and walked along the queue to keep people entertained (he was lovely by the way, very in-character) and later I saw that he joined her at the M&G location. I think they moved the M&G location (for winter) to where the Princess M&G used to be near It's A Small World. You can check out the times and locations here: http://entertainment.disneylandparis.nl ... arades.pdf (http://entertainment.disneylandparis.nl/NL/NL/Neutral/Images/ShowsAndParades.pdf%22%20onclick=%22window.open(this.href);return%20false;)

I think Rapunzel's one of the princesses my son wants to meet. It's her, Ariel, Snow White, Belle and Tiana that he wants to meet. We've got Auberge De Cendrillon booked so that he can meet more than just the one. And hopefully, Rapunzel will still have her special meeting place, if not then I guess we'll do a queue in the pavillion in the hope that he'll meet her.

I see where people are unhappy about the lack of variety in Characters they find at DLRP, especially Robin Hood characters. Personally, that's something I am really looking forward to seeing. Here in the USA we get the same meet and greet characters all the time at our parks, there is no variety. (Not including characters in parades). The last time I saw a character from Robin Hood was 2004, and that was Prince John. You really don't get any surprise characters at our parks. Which made me really excited when I saw someone's vacation footage on YouTube and they saw Friar Tuck at DLRP. And DLRP has Launchpad McQuack?! Awesome!

What do you think is the rarest or most unusual character you have seen at DLRP and where and when did you see them?

When we went in March we did a meet and greet with Jack Sparrow.  My 7 year old DS had brought his Lego Jack Sparrow with him.  He and 5 year old Ds had great fun with Jack and Lego Jack.  He really spent time with him, and with all kids.  We did have to wait a while, there was no actual queueing system, but Jack seemed to pluck kids at random from the crowd around him.  Our patience paid off and the boys have a lovely memory of meeting the "real" Jack Sparrow.

I think rare characters are Pocahontas-ones. At least I never saw them. They are maybe "seasonal". From "Hunchback of Notre Dame", the same as above.
The princes. They used to sign autographs at the Castle stage. Now theres (mostly) a princess alone. In the new pavillon.

That's interesting, at WDW Pocahontas and Meeko are a standard. You can see them everyday, even in the winter, at Camp Minnie-Mickey in Animal Kingdom. John Smith is only in parades, Gov. Radcliff is out during Mickey's not So Scary Halloween Party or on villains floats. I haven't seen a Hunchback character since they closed the Hunchback of Notre Dame stage show.

I think the rarest characters I have ever seen were Hercules and Milo from Atlantis. They were standing in the middle of the courtyard at MGM Studios and no one knew they were there. They were bored and talking to each other. I wish I had gotten photos, but I didn't. I didn't even get to keep my autographs.

No, I do not think so. Goofy (or Dingo, as he is called in france and therefore in the resort) may be rather popular himself, but rather as a classical cartoon and comic character. Ever since Disney Club disappearted from european TV, the series or the movie starring Goofy and Max were not of interest to any tv stations. The last time I saw The Goffy movie was...ugh...I think 5 years ago. Eeven Dosney Channel isn't showing the series, they rather rely on hit shows like Hannah Montana

The only time I have ever seen Max was at Disneyland California in 2001. He was at the Character Breakfast with Minnie and Daisy at the Paradise Pier Hotel. I always thought it was strange he was there because he didn't seem to work with the theme.

BTW, Goofy and Max aren't dogs, they are Goofs. It was briefly explained in their show Goof Troop. That's why Goofy and his neighbors have cats and dogs as pets.

Max came out for the Frontierland 20th celebration show, but I don't think he has been out since, it's a shame, a photo with Max and Goofy would be pretty cool! Ideally he'd belong in Studios around the Playhouse Disney/Stitch area as he's a Disney Channel show, and if I'm honest, I'd go in for a "classic cartoons" meet and greet area, I think you'd get a lot of people my age want to meet Launchpad, Gadget, Doug etc (hell, they could even dig out the Bonkers costume if they wanted!).

This seems quite quirky! I went on the Disney cruise out of Barcelona last year and we had a Japanese couple who were obsessed with Chip and Dale, Before we boarded we had a two hour wait at the port and C & P were amongst the characters entertainig the crowds. The Japanese couple queued and took a shed load of photos with the characters and then joined the back of the queue to do it all again! They must have had 5/6 meetings before the characters changed! They presented the characters with small gifts and then spent the next ten days virtually stalking them both throughout the cruise! If C & P were scheduled to appear, there they were! Best selection of character merchandise I've ever seen!

For Mickey Minnie Goofey Pluto and Woody we go to cowboy cookout tea.
Ok so 19 euros each isn't cheap for a pancakes and sweets but we just take advantage of the unlimited drinks (fill our cups as we leave) no qs for some key characters is a grate time saver plus you normally get a few randoms too and lots of time for character interaction when it gets quieter at parade time the kids get to actually play with the characters my son has had woody all to himself there for so long he actually got bored and walked away to find mickey.

We went very recently and found that there were a lot less characters than usual, there wasn't many on the program and we found it hard to meet randoms, luckily we did the magical moment as much as we could and met some different ones (including Stitch and Angel, together!), we also did the tea party which was great as we got two I had never seen before, Frollo and Rabbit (Winnie The Pooh)

Just returned from a lovely trip. We´ve seen lots of characters this time. We went in line for the princesses, (we got Belle) Goofy and the candy machine, Mickey Mouse and Jack Skellington. But am I the only one who  thinks it´s a very chaotic experience to meet chartacters if there isn't a line?
Characters arrive and people starts to push around to get an autograph and picture.
If you´re unlucky you´re standing there and wait and the character dissapears again.
It happened to us with Ariel. We were waiting and waiting but every time she turned her  back at us, (My 4 year old daughter and me) people who came after us got their picture but we didn't and after 20 minutes waiting she went away.
My daughter thinks now Ariel is a mean princes. She was really sad and cried,
Why does Disneyland Paris not let people stand in line with all the characters, it's possible in Disneyworld so why not in Paris?

It happened to us with Ariel. We were waiting and waiting but every time she turned her  back at us, (My 4 year old daughter and me) people who came after us got their picture but we didn't and after 20 minutes waiting she went away.
My daughter thinks now Ariel is a mean princes. She was really sad and cried,
Why does Disneyland Paris not let people stand in line with all the characters, it's possible in Disneyworld so why not in Paris?

One of my biggest complaints about dlrp this, went for Halloween a few years back and there was nearly a crush when jack skellington appeared, complained at town hall about it (first time I've ever complained at disney)  with the pushing no one gets a good experience or a good photo, so it takes away the "magic"

I have been to DLRP during the Halloween Season this year and last year and both times I have had to queue to see Jack Skeleton and Sally.  Also if you go to Main Street there are places there where you can queue for characters such as Mickey and Pooh Bear, then there is the Princess Pavilion as well. The characters around Fantasyland and in the Studios are in plentiful supply and if they disappear will normally be out again 15 minutes later, cast members do need a break as everyone else does when they are working/performing. As a tip I would suggest going to the characters who have less of a crowd around them if your looking to meet as many characters as possible, however, if your after just the one character in particular unfortunately you are just going to have to be patient and the princesses are the most popular unfortunately so  you will need to be extremely patient and as I said before there is the option of the Princess Pavilion.

I know there are places wich has lines. Yes I have been to the princess Pavilion. I also know castmembers needs a brake. But what I meant was, why not a line with every character. It´s like that in Disneyworld. Every character has a line And when the castmember has a break they just tell the people in line, just wait a few moment she/he will be back in a moment.
In that way no disappoitment, no one who can go before his or her turn..

In past trips to DLP the character appearnces (non meet and greets) have been a bit chaotic.  Jack Sparrow being the worst.  i dont know if theyve moved him but the small space he used to stand in ended up with him nearly getting crushed.

On most occasions however the CM has taken control and in many cases so has the character, if it can speak like Mary Poppins or Peter Pan, and have made sure that young children are seen first and not pushed out of the way by adults without children.  Mary Poppins was actually very forceful and told anybody who didnt have children under 11 to move back and let the young children get in lol.

@jonathan: Excuse me, but what you said about Mary Poppins telling adults without children to move back is horrible... Disneyland is for people of all ages. In fact, the mission statement of all Disney Parks is "We create happiness by providing the finest in entertainment to people of ALL AGES everywhere". If everyone is patient EVERYONE should have an equal chance of getting to a character in my opinion. You also learn your children to be patient by doing this! Can't believe anyone would endorse the fact of ANYONE getting pushed back if they are just there together with everyone else... As Walt Disney once said: "Adults are only kids grown up, anyway" ;)

Thats true but having worked at DLP as a Stage Manager its more of a health and safety thing for children under 11 to be separated from aggressive adult, its just an unfortunate world that some adults (and never the people who are true disney fans!) have no regard for others even little children! So it's true that Disney is for all ages however the characters (as Disney Employee's) have a legal responsibility to make sure everyone is safe especially children. However the characters minder should have been making more noise  on the situation, after all that is why every character has to have a CM with them!
Title: Re: Disney Characters
Post by: jonathan on November 10, 2012, 09:29:21 PM
Exactly benjy this is the problem.  Children are waiting to get their autographs and photos when adults, and whether its for all ages or not, I dont feel it appropriate for adults to barge children out the way to get close to the characters.  It was never suggested or worded by Mary Poppins that adults arent welcome but that they have to let the young kids get there chance.

This has been a common occurence on our trips.  Normally the CMs do all the telling off but maybe on this occasion the CM was well used to Mary Poppins outspoken attitude.  Really she was getting annoyed because she was calling the children forward from the crowd for photos and the adults mainly teenagers but adults in the eyes of DLP pricing were just barging through.  Mary Poppins was obviously aware that this was very impolite and dangerous and didn't mind telling people so lol

Ok so, I now come under the 'adult' pricing. Ok. I love seeing the characters. I am quite small. I never barge anyone out of the way. I wait my turn and have some foreign women literally hitting me with some part of her body most of the time. So why, once I get to the front of the line, is it ok for me to then be pushed back by the staff themselves? Luckily all of the characters i have met have been very good with me and realised i am patient and bring me forward. (LOL, I remember Mr. Vader.) One of the best was Jack Sparrow earlier this year who noticed I was being patient and then spent about 5 minutes talking and interacting with me. (I was wearing one of those Agent P hats that makes you look like your wearing two hats, now that made for interesting conversation!)

When I was there last week on Halloween's day / evening, luckely things didn't got out of hand that much.
It mainly got out of control when there wasn't a special booth / stage / CM closeby.

For Jack Skellington everyone was wating in a line the CM's had made in advance.

Jack Sparrow had a CM with him, who told someone who would come on stage, to go back, and that Jack would pick you out of the crowd on his own, which was cool "I think I'll ... take ... you now".

Same went with most villains, speaking and non-speaking.
If they could speak, like Gaston, and he would point to a child/person, and someone else got "shoved in his face" he would nicely tell that person/child to step back because he pointed out someone.
And characters like Jafar all did the hand-gestures, they would pick someone, and if someone else would stand next to him, he'd made a gesture with his hand the other person needed to leave.

There wasn't a CM around Facilier, and he didn't say anything of his own really, and bumping and pushing was quite bad when we were waiting for a picture with him.

Can I ask you where you made the complaint.

We've recently come back from paris and between rude people in the parks/stores and character mobs is the only way to describe it I wouldn't be incouraged to ever visit again.

They need to have controlled lines for all characters. It would really help as not only would more people get to see the character and take their picture but also the character would probably be more comfortable istead of being crushed up against a fence. I also agree with the point Disney is for all ages not just those under the age of 12. I went to try meet a few characters surrounded by a mob and failed everytime because the cm would go stay away the character will pick who is next but the characters only picked the children and I know kids are kids whatever but I pay money to get into the park I expect to be able to get pictures comfortably with the characters as well. The best character I saw was Mickey Mouse in Disneyland hotel because not only did he not come when the CM told him to leave as he wasn't finished with the people waiting to see him but also when people tried to skip the queue he told them in his non verbal way to wait and pointed out the semi line that had formed!

Title: Re: Disney Characters
Post by: Jens on November 18, 2012, 12:01:18 PM
To make myself completely clear, I don't want adults to barge in front of children. Same goes for children however... They can not barge in front of other people who have been waiting longer (even IF they are adults). It's basic education.

What I mean, is that if everyone waits patiently, EVERYONE should have a shot at a photo with a character. As said by someone before, adults also pay to get in to the park (mostly even more than children) and so they have the right to do so. Disney Characters are there for everyone, and adults are only children grown up anyway...

In reply to the lines for characters: It is not always possible, believe me. If you create a line for a character, bare in mind that they are mostly there for a half an hour and everyone that is going to stand in that line will EXPECT to see that character. When the waiting line gets over half an hour and the character leaves, everyone that is still left in that line will surely complain. Close it in advance, you say? Easier said than done... When the cm closes the line they do not have control on what happens with the character anymore, so when the cm is by itself, that is a big nono. Also bare in mind that mostly, a bunch of characters only have 1 cm with them so in that case it is out of the question to start making lines and keeping everything in order (no line jumping, etc). Sorry, there's a lot more to it people, believe me...

However... CM's frequently use a system that doesn't need a line. A semi circle is made around the character and the character basicly peels away the layers of people by selecting them by hand, going from the left to the right. That way the first row that was there first gets served first and everytime someone gets chosen someone from the second row (who arrived later) steps up meaning they will be on the next round when the character starts from the left again when he/she finished on the right. This system works well, but is needed to be explained to guests frequently to make sure everyone sticks to it... When the character leaves, the CM mostly allows a photo with all the children together or refers to a later hour the character will be there (and mostly with no hastle, as there were no expectations you do have with a waiting line).

Hope this clears some stuff up...

In wdw they have queues, and everyone gets a quality meet and greet and some wonderful photos, they have a cast member at the end of he queue to prevent guest joining the queue who are not going be able to see the character, but say when they would be back.

For example we were going to join the queue to meet Alice in the uk pavlion in Epcot, to be told Alice had to go for a cup of tea with the mad hatter, but she would be back at such and such a time....

There is nothing to prevent dlrp doing this.

Short and simple: The current budget for the balance of cast members/characters in DLP does not allow that system to be implemented in our parks (for now). And I'm not even going to start about the culture difference between americans and europeans making the situations non-comparible ;)

Sorry I don't think it's budget, last trip we had the mis-fortune to go to the meet and greet with jack sparrow, the cm accompanying him was too busy texting instead of crowd control.... So it's to cm training, and a bit of rope.

And sorry lets not start on the "culture difference" again,  as I don't feel that they are non-comparible.... As people from all over the world visit WDW.....

When cultural differences are mentioned, is it suggested that Europeans dont know how to queue   ;)  :-"
Title: Re: Disney Characters
Post by: Jens on November 20, 2012, 01:34:20 AM
It's all good example... People are herd animals and follow the pack. If half of them speak a language that the castmember doesn't speak (you can't expect the cm to know how to speak all languages) and they don't follow the instructions, the perfect little system they have in the american parks will NOT work. That's what I mean with cultural differences. Altough yes, certain nationalities are more excited than others and will approach characters directly instead of even looking for the queueline. All those little things add up to making it difficult to implement in DLP.

And yes, maybe not every cm will have the same motivation to give guests the best experience, but a lot of them do try. Don't think it's always better in american parks, you have to see everything in perspective. Castmembers do try, never forget that ;)

But let's focus on Disney Characters again now :p

In WDW all characters have controlled lines.. You know who controls them the CM's and every single character I saw in DLP had a CM standing nearby so why are they incapable of making guests form a controlled line. Simple really if they can't wait patiently in line then they shouldn't get to see the Character. I emailed DLP to complain about a number of issues from our trip Character mobs being one of them.

My comment was sort of tongue in cheek.  Its alleged that us Brits invented queueing back in the days of rationing during the war lol and in general many visitors to DLP, mainly those from Europe, dont seem accustomed to queuing and waiting patiently even for the rides as is evident by the amount of queue jumping that occurs.

I think if I were a Disney character performer though id insist on having a security gaurd with me rather than a regular CM lol!!

A nice example also is, when I'm in London, everyone ques up to go onto a bus.
Here in Belgium, people turn into a pack of wolves and push each other over just to get on the bus first.

I've kind of seen that happening with many characters when I was there on Halloween.
People tend to turn into a pack of wolves and they will destroy anything (anyone) on their path just to get up front  o_O

Ive seen it myself and it can be shocking sometimes.  Im not suggesting that Brits dont queue jump but we seem accustomed to queueing and if see a queue we seem compelled to join the back of it lol.

I really don't think it has anything to do with budget.  Again every character I saw had a CM with them what's to stop the CM using their mouth/brain and getting the people to form an orderly queue.. they don't even need the rope to form a queue just control the crowd. What else are they standing beside the character for???

I think I already explained why it's not possible for castmembers to make a queue out of the blue and properly close it by themself? Imagine if you're in that queue patiently waiting for a photo and the castmember just runs of with the character without closing? How would you feel? You can only create a proper queueline if you are sure that it will be properly closed like they do on the photolocations.

Like I also already said, most castmembers do try to make a system so it runs better, but don't expect miracles like in WDW. Language, Culture, it all matters, believe me! And errr... the castmembers are not there to make a queueline at all actually. They are mostly there for the security of the character (looking out for people that are being rough with them) but also to reply in the character's name if a child asks a question, looking to see if there are any disabled people around that can't reach the character and basicly just trying to make the best out of the situation while doing all that!

I know it's easy to judge castmembers, and I know they're not all perfect, but sometimes there's just a bit more to it than you think ;)

Some CM's aren't suitable though.
At halloween night, both stepsisters were out, and with them was this tiny little fragile girl who could not control the crowd at all, as she didn't had a strong voice, and it was kind of chaos at that time.
She tried yelling to everyone to step back, but no one could hear her. We were standing next to her, and couldn't even really :/

Hey guys, what we're talking about here isn't actually impossible. I know this because during our summer visit everyone formed a queue in the Studios to see Chip n' Dale who randomly appeared on the Stars n' Cars stage. It was shocking! I have never seen a queue been formed for a random character EVER before at DLP! It was quite amazing! As for closing it off, I got lucky as I went up and got lots of interaction from C&D and then after that the CM invited all the other childen up together for one big picture!

  I don't think it's anything to do with miracles. I think it's to do with common sense. They don't need rope or anything just a mouth saying line up here. If they can't speak English so what people aren't that stupid that if they see a line they won't cop on what the cast member is doing. If they continue to ignore it then that just makes them ignorant.

And again the character would be safer if people formed a proper queue instead of the ridiculous mob system most of the characters had when I visited

What i Believe about Disneyland Paris, is that they should follow the WDW's  system.
Which for example they have "more than one" Snow White, Alice, peter pan etc...
Yes. of course!
Maybe some of you didn't know about that.

At WDW they have 2-3 people presenting the one same Disney Character in a couple of different locations of course. Not only one person presenting the one specific character, but several people presenting that one character!  :-)

So, by applying this system, their "Disney character" is always there for the people to take pictures and they achieve better results on meets and greets.  And everybody stays satisfied.

But, what ever we say here, DLP will never do it.
The reason is Because of their "forever financial problems"  that will never stop encounter.
I don't know... maybe the French financial system is a failure, as compared to the English system which it is much better of course.

@DisneyEuros: What on earth are you talking about? There's only one Snow White, Alice, Peter Pan, ... ! I'm not sure what you mean by what you just said, but I'm very sure that you can meet the princesses during a large part of the day in DLP and that most of the VIP characters are very easily findable if you look on your park schedule (in both parks, wink wink). Why is everything always better in WDW anyway? :p

@petals:There isn't a "mob system". Either a character gets mobbed (the cm can't create a system or decides not to) or it doesn't (the cm creates a system, whatever it is). Member "Donuttiejj" probably ran into a character with an acc that did the half circle around the character system which works fine. Member "orsie" points out that it can be done to form a queueline and get away with it, and I'm not saying it can't, but it's very dangerous to do so without a proper closing, as a queueline automatically triggers expectations that once you stand in it you will definitely see the character like everyone else in the queue. But I'm just repeating myself ;)

Again that's where the CM comes in and if the CM knows on average how many people the character will meet. The CM then closes the queue once they are getting close to that number. It really isn't rocket science like!!!

That's not 100% the truth either. Yes WDW have more than one person playing each character but apart from characters that have arranged regular meets such as character spot and in the animation people the random ones that come out use you'll never guess what?! A queue!  and you'll never guess what else happens the CM actually controls the queue and knows how long the character will stay out and then cuts off the line when it's nearing the time for the character to leave.  The characters that randomly come out are not "always there for people."  The mob is a complete and utter joke and one of the reasons I'll never visit Paris again!

Always and everything is better in WDW.
Nowadays,  Bob Iger buys more and more of other companies that costs around $4 BILLIONS,(not millions) each.
so.. Aren't they much Better? ;-)
DLP is more like a "Luna park" to me, rather than a "real Magical Disneyland" as Florida's. With magical places/landscapes and Excellent attractions.

Because the BIG RICH DADDY(Disney Company), have plenty of Money to spend and they get expanted every couple of years, with new attractions, New parks, etc...
DLP is the poorest park from all the rest. And they will never get any WDW similar expansion. The only expansion they can get is build more Hotels, restaurants and shops that they can produce more money for them. But NOT any other New ATTRACTIONS.
Because of one simple reason.
Since their first opening, 20 years now and they still have the same financial problems. Over and over again.

Did you know how many Great attractions were rejected from DLP, because of their restricted financial problems?
Have you ever study anything about Disneyland Parks? If you had, you wouldn't wonder why i said that, about the WDW "have more cast members" to be represented as one Disney Character(Snow White, Alice, Peter Pan, etc..) Make a research on the web and you will find this info.
At least that's how things works at WDW. I am not sure about Disneyland Paris.

Let me explain more... Some examples:
Do you believe that if YOU go to work at any Disneyland park as a VIP cast member(Character),
+will work by yourself alone as the only peter Pan character in the park?
+Would you be able to work from Morning till the night as Peter Pan alone? with no one else to replace you if something happens?
+Will you be able to be found at all the Disney hotels "at the same time", in the morning, for the "Breakfast" character meet and greet?
+Are you able to controll all by your self, all those people pushing and pulling, and waiting on that specific spot, from all of the rest open areas of Disneyland, just to take a photo with the "one and only" Peter Pan (which is you)? Of course not!

Somewhere else in another Far spot, there is one more PeterPan waiting there with a queue line of people waiting for their photos too.
And This was done for many reasons. To help and benefit the cast members and satisfy the tourists at the same time.

When it is your time to go home from your job, someone else takes your place for the next hours. The same thing happens at Disneyland parks.
Haven't you ever notice of People's Photographs they shoot with their favorite characters, and this character has a Different face each time?

I hope this helps :-)

I think Jens was hinting at something DisneyEuros! Just think about it for a second.  ;) I think she was just preserving the magic for younger readers.

Yes orsie, I was indeed preserving the magic. If anyone has something to say that spoils the magic, please put it in spoiler tags. I had a nice little chuckle with your post DisneyEuros, as I must say I know exactly what you are talking about, as I work in the entertainment department of Disneyland Paris and yes, of course the same thing happens in our park. I will however, to not spoil any more magic, leave it at that confessment.

Believe me when I say that I think not everything is the best in DLP, but we have a lot of things to be proud of, including our entertainment department! I'm not saying that because I work there, but because I have been in WDW and altough they have a bigger quantity of shows, it's not always the same quality. I'm very happy to see that, for example, our daytime parade boasts so much more energy than the Magic Kingdom one, to give you one example... So no, not everything is better in WDW ;)

But... I guess nobody can ever win the battle against WDW fans/DLP haters ;) So I'll stop trying...

PS: Oh and, I'm a he :)

Ummm, that's a little extreme in this case, surely? i suppose there might be 6 year olds reading the forum who are interested in Disney themed debate, but somehow I doubt it. Everyone above that age should be able to handle a little reality mixed into the "magic".

Disney Magic is there for everyone. You should be able to choose if you want to spoil it or not. You can't always "assume" that people want to spoil the magic for themselves ;)

If I read the end of a book, or watch the end of a film, then that's a spoiler: I have found out something prematurely that I would not have otherwise known. But I'm afraid that I cannot accept that anyone over the age of 6 can "find out" that the characters in the Disney parks are actually real people inside a costume, and that there are not single versions of those costumes. Heck, I'm pretty sure 6 year olds can work that one out for themselves without being told!

Are we going to have to put spoiler warnings about the existence of Father Christmas, the tooth fairy etc as well?

I think everyone can enjoy Disney at any age. But I don't think it's necessary to pretend that you have the comprehension level of a toddler to do it.

Look, I'm very sure that everyone understands the non-existance of certain characters/persons in this world, heck, even children! However, when you come to Disneyland it's something you forget, surpress, remember? Everyone knows what happens behind the scenes, but you choose to forget it once you enter the park, otherwise it's not fun anymore. Why would that be any different here? Let people have the choice, it's not a big deal. I'm not going to scream murder and blasphemy if people don't, but it's a little thing that doesn't take a lot of effort ;)

If I have offended you personally in any way by making you feel like you are a toddler, I'm very sorry, but I still believe that "Disney Magic" is something that everyone can still choose to believe in. People want to escape sometimes. I'm very sorry that you're too "realistic" to see that ;)

On magicforum we have a long history of respecting "character integrity". I hope we can stick to that.

Is giant Eeyore different to normal Eeyore? lol  :o   Not sure if this helps you but we saw Eeyore of a normal size in Inventions while having dinner on our last trip a few weeks back

I don't know if this is the right topic to post this, but... where does Alice show up? I know she doesn't have her own meet-and-greet space anymore (back in the Magical Moments Festival we only managed to find the White Rabbit on the meet-and-greet, Alice always had long queues or was gone), but I've been wanting to meet her for years...

We bumped into Alice by the Mad Hatters Tea Cups last year - she was lovely! If I remember correctly The Genie and Jafar ran up behind her and started dancing, then ran off again lol! I love how surreal Disney is!

I think I read somewhere that you can ask at City Hall when and where characters are going to meet beside the ones on the "public schedule". I've never checked though, but it's worth a try!

Disney junior characters so far has rarely made it to europe. So my guess would be no, and probably won't be coming either.

We have just returned from WDW and I agree there should be more of the characters from Disney Junior and Phineas and ferb.  As well as various Disney character restaurants similar to Café Mickey there was a restaurant which only had junior characters.
