Title: Glow with the Show Ears debut for World of Color at Disney C
Post by: Robert97 on June 15, 2012, 09:13:46 PM
Steve Davison has posted this on his Facebook wall page. They have also used this type of effect in a recent Coldplay festival with wrist bands. I really like the way Disney are using the effect in the World Of Colour makes the show  more spectacular.

QuoteHere's my newest creation! "GLOW WITH THE SHOW!" It was pretty amazing to see the premiere last night. Once this catches on it will change the way we think about nighttime interactivity!

I love the glowing ears, I hope they come to DLP soon.

I hope they DON'T come to DLP. Don't get me wrong I think they are great but Dreams need it to total darkness.

I actually think they'd work well with Dreams, they seem to be synched with the show to only flash when needed or if a certain colour is mentioned. So I can imagine it look spectacular if the star's light was to shine down on the crowd and all of a sudden the ears burst into colour, or when Genie appears a sea of blue floods the audience.

As long as it isn't generic flashing, it'd could be great!

I thought it looked really cool from the video but then again I'd like my first experience of World of Color to be completely distraction free to completely focus on the show itself - after the first few viewings the ears would add to the show but before that they'd be distracting I think, especially if sitting further back.

So these glow ears, I assume people have to buy them, or do Disney hand them out free for WoC if they are in sync with the show. I've seen video of people wearing them in Cars Land, ears glowing?

And in a related item, the GWTS Ears will be expanded to Fantasmic! in Disneyland proper soon.

There's a blog post showing a teardown of what these things are made of here: http://stuffandymakes.com/2012/07/08/di ... -teardown/ (http://stuffandymakes.com/2012/07/08/disney-glow-with-the-show-ears-teardown/%22%20target=%22_blank%22%20rel=%22nofollow)

It's really clever how they get the ears to synch up with the show. It's like a TV remote. Each set of ears has a little infrared receiver, exactly the same part they use in TVs. Somewhere in the show area is an infrared transmitter that sends a control signal that the ears follow. They can also "shine" different signals on different sections of the audience to get animated light effects.
