ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGG
GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH
HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Phew! Now I've got that out of my system, I have another little moan to get off my chest - people who take flash photos on dark rides.
ARGH!
I'm writing this through gritted teeth. In recent years, this trend has been getting worse, but this year it was just unbearable. On Phantom Manor, Small World, and Pirates of the Caribbean - even things like Peter Pan - there were countless people taking flash photos all. the. way. round. Not just one or two photos, but CONTINUOUSLY for the entire ride. By the end of it, I (almost) felt like taking their camera and strangling them with it :P
Why do people do this? For once, maybe people ought to try to enjoy the ride, rather than just spend all their time documenting every second of their family's journey around it. It's rude, it's ignorant, and it spoils the ride for everyone else. To make it even worse, there were SO many people with huge, fancy, top of the range cameras, that obviously didn't have the foggiest idea how to use them, and were thus taking photos using maximum flash at every opportunity they got.
What gets me is they won't even be getting a good picture out of it! With the brightness of the flash some people were using, it just lit the whole room up, entirely. They'll just be getting two big, white blobs where their family's meant to be, or at the very best, a scene completely devoid of the atmospheric lighting - something which, I'd imagine, would be what encouraged them to take the photo in the first place!
GRRRR! Rant over.
 Guilty as charged. But in my defence, I only ever do it when the ride stops/ breaks down. My camera can handle darkness as it has an ISO which is through the roof, and it can handle movement, but not both at the same time.
I understand exactly what you mean. It's very, very annoying. Especially when people turn around and flash directly in you eyes. :x :x :x
Oh yes, very annoying, especially in Phantom Manor.
I don't have a big problem when people take pictures in "it's a small world", because it is a very bright "dark ride". Is it even a dark ride?

I'm not sure what it would class as, but as it's indoors, I tend to find the flashes are very noticeable. Especially if you're in a boat with five people doing it :(
I've always found that photos taken on its a small world with flash look terrible, the colours look very washed out.
I hate photographs on rides, Pirates has always been the worst I've found.
Is this a complete-the-sentence game? "People who take flash photos on dark rides..." should be taken to a specially re-created version of Superstar Limo and made to ride it round and round for the rest of eternity.
You know what reeaally bugs me about this, and it seems to happen most on Pirates - when people just sit slack-jawed with their digital camera, clicking away at every..single...scene. They don't care about the ride, they're just taking photos for the sake of it. They'll probably never even look at them.
There should be a new Living Character pirate who shoots peoples' flash cameras out of their hands and into the water. Fun, and interactive!

completely agreeing with you Willow, they really do look terrible. I use a hit and miss method with out flash and take photos of everything and hope some turn out ok and delete the others
good topic KSI, and i agree with you too, it really ruins the ride and the illusion its trying to create
I hate flash photography in the rides!!!
Honestly, how many do people need to take before they realise THEY ALL LOOK TERRIBLE?  ?? In some cases I've seen people who try a couple of times, then give up. But most times, they just keep trying and trying  !!
POTC and PM are the worse. The flashes ruin it for everyone else (I wish I could see Mme Leota in PM without a flash every two minutes  )
The only dark ride where I try to take pictures (with no flash) is IASW, because some areas do come out OK. I tend to have the camera ready in case we stop inside any dark ride, because with no movement some pictures can come out, but otherwise, no pictures inside the rides. I may try with my new camera in a low ISO setting inside POTC or PM, but to be honest I rather enjoy the ride than worry about taking bad pictures of it....
During our last visit to DLP we were on POTC, there was this italian guy in the row in front of us, he kept taking (terrible) pictures of everything (and seeing they were bad, but it didnt stop him), but the worse part was that every 2 minutes he took a picture of himself with his friend, so of course we kept getting his flash in the eyes... We could have strangled him... At the end we started making faces when he was taking the pictures of himself, my only hope is that we ruined some of them
I must be the only person who doesn't find this annoying..in fact I have never noticed it and I am probably guilty of it, although not the whole way through a ride just the odd photo, but that was the first time I was there mainly now I can't be bothered doing it on rides and I do just want to enjoy it lol  Plus on dark rides theres really little point so I can understand that comment.
I must admit, camera flashes have never really bothered me. I can't say I've been in an attraction where people are doing it consistently though... if that was the case it might get a little irritating.
QuoteAt the end we started making faces when he was taking the pictures of himself, my only hope is that we ruined some of them
That's amazing. I can't believe I've never thought of doing that.
Quote from: "Pete's Dragon" Guilty as charged. But in my defence, I only ever do it when the ride stops/ breaks down. My camera can handle darkness as it has an ISO which is through the roof, and it can handle movement, but not both at the same time.
I'm guilty, too.
But to be honest, last year was our first trip to DLRP and I wanted to take many photos, so we can always remember the great time that we had there. We didn't plan to visit DLRP again this year... And I didn't realize that I was probably bothering some people. Perhaps because it doesn't bother myself.
I just find it selfish and inconsiderate !! There are enough good photos on the web to remind people of the ride, and videos too !!
Wow...I found myself getting angry just reading the title of this thread.
Thing is there is nothing asking people not to in DLRP. (or have they recently added something on PM) So I sometimes feel guity when I beat them to death with their Cannon Ixus.
Anyway the rise in popularity of digital photography means that it is so cheap to keep snapping that people don't care about the quality of there photos and can take hundreds.
People with video camcorders get on my nerves too.....if I wanted to watch the parade on a small TV I would have stayed at home and watched the advert.
i like taking my own videos and pic's when i go on holiday, its a personal reminder of your holiday and the good time you had!
Yes sometime's flash can be annoying but everyone dose it, im used to it, i sometimes use a flash unless i know that the flash would not be effective then I would not use the flash
It bugs the hell out of me.
I don't want to ride POC and have the ride lit up for me every 2 seconds by someones annoying flash. The theme of the ride is meant to be dark.
I have taken a few pics on IASW but without a flash as i dont want to look like a inconsiderate fool and spoil the ride for others.
Maybe im blind but im sure 99% of rides state no flash photography or am i seeing things?
I love to ahve some photos from the rides (for instance It's a small world), BUT I never use flash - for the sake of the photos, my own experience and most of all for the others' experience.

I managed to take quite a few pictures when in DLP without a flash and they turn out fine.
and yes there is signs to advise of this

Flash photo's look awfull!
I do make pictures on rides sometimes, but only without flash.
It's just as annoying on rides as when I'm visiting the theatre and people are taking flash photo's all show long, even if the performer asks them not to.
I agree Annet, I don't ever use a flash if im in a dark ride (chances are i wont even take a photo) or a show.
Here's a photo I took without a flash
(//http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o427/Brtweed1976/Disney0878.jpg)
But along the way the ride broke down and stopped for a good 2mins, so
(//http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o427/Brtweed1976/Disney0875.jpg)
Then it broke again
(//http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o427/Brtweed1976/Disney0874.jpg)
And I wasn't the only one. Never saw any flashs going off whilst the ride was moving, only when we came to a shuddering halt.
But if don't want to say OMG !!! then dont open the spoliers below. Look on the bright side, I didn't use a flash 8)

OMG PD you didn't! :o Yes, you are going to burn in hell now, good photos though ;) :P
I don't have a problem with people taking photos without a flash.
Pete's Dragon they are great pics, the Peter Pan ones are good esp as you used no flash :P
QuoteI love to ahve some photos from the rides (for instance It's a small world), BUT I never use flash - for the sake of the photos, my own experience and most of all for the others' experience.
8) If only everyone else was like you :)
QuoteI have taken a few pics on IASW but without a flash as i dont want to look like a inconsiderate fool and spoil the ride for others.
Exactly this. You don't necessarily need a flash to make the picture work, and if you do, I guess you shouldn't be taking pictures of a dark ride! I have loads of pictures from disney, both on and off ride, but the ones on dark rides are always taken when the ride breaks down, sans flash. That way I get the lighting too.
QuoteYes sometime's flash can be annoying but everyone dose it,
That's hardly an excuse. Get out! :P
QuoteThing is there is nothing asking people not to in DLRP.
This is the most important point made so far. This seriously impacts people's enjoyment of the rides, as not only is it a little bit blinding, but when you've got five people flashing away (with their cameras) every few seconds, it basically means you can't enjoy the ride as it was intended. The lighting goes, the models are exposed as being tatty (nothing some good lighting couldn't hide), and you're left with a vague purply after-image floating around your vision for the next few hours.
There really,
really needs to be something in place to stop people doing this. But the problem is, I don't know what.
Case in point (I can feel my blood boiling now) - Animagique.
ARGH!
They say
in three languages not to take flash photos. At the start of the show, they say "don't take flash photos", and even give a reason for it! Then, no sooner have the letters danced out of the way, than the flashes start. In recent years, they've even started positioning CMs at the back, ready to leap on anyone who even has a camera on, but really, should they have to? Why can people not take no for an answer?
It's especially stupid when you see certain human's sheep like nature at its finest. One gets their camera out, gets told off by the CM, and embarrassed with a torch. No sooner have they put it away, that someone else in the auditorium gets theirs out! It's like they see it happening, and think "Hey, that's a good idea. Oh, but he got caught. He he, what an idiot. I won't let that happen to me!". Then the CM points the torch in their face. Repeat ad infinitum.
Quote(//http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o427/Brtweed1976/Disney0874.jpg)
Without the lighting, that photo just makes Peter Pan look like a glorified Blue Peter creation. If you look close enough, you can almost see the sticky back plastic and paper maché...
Quote from: "littlemermaid83"I don't have a problem with people taking photos without a flash.
Pete's Dragon they are great pics, the Peter Pan ones are good esp as you used no flash :P
I DID you a flash. And Pan, talking about Blue Peter....if you look at the one of Hook and Pan, you can see a large black speaker in the corner. Does spoil the magic of it, dont ya think.
People that take flash photos on dark rides annoy me, yes.
But what annoys me even more is that, despite the number of people taking the time to take flash photos, all their photos come out looking like cr*p. Most of the time they'll have an object in the foreground illuminated bright white, and everything behind it in the distance will be jet black. Not good photography. There's a lot of effort that goes into taking bad photos.
How many people have you seen taking photos of the castle at night, with their flash on? Personally, I've seen thousands. Do these people really expect the little flash light on their tiny little camera to illuminate a huge building 30-50 metres away?!?!? They're either very stupid or posses amazing technology that doesn't yet exist.
To really capture the theatrical lighting of a ride, you want to take a photo WITHOUT using your flash. Only problem is, the dark rides are so dark that only cameras with High ISO modes can do them justice. The solution is to either buy a new compact camera with a High ISO mode, or better yet, get a DSLR which will have a large sensor.
There is no hope for you now Pete's Dragon !!!!!
The Peter Pan photos prove a good point , great "magical " image on the shot without the flash and the flash pics just ruin the whole effect !! And not the memory of the ride that you wanted ,I'm sure !
IASW without a flash....shows you dont need a flash in this ride to get a decent photo.

i try and avoid flash where possible but i have done it on pirates before now :P
Sadly 99% of camera owners don't know how to turn flash off, A ride like ISAW doesn't need flash but compacts will think they do
Mmmm never noticed a flash over my excitement and interest in the ride really :? I dont need to over do the flash on my camera but my six year old ( who has already decided to be a photographer  ) has a cheaper version of mine (naturally  ) and he needs his flash..and he may even need to take a million pics haha I think If someone complained about him I would tell them to Bog Off! :-"
Haha me saying this I bet when I go in Sep I`ll be tortured by flash`s of light in my face and "CHEEEERS!" HAHA :?
i can feel my blood boiling just thinking about this lol. on my last ride of potc on my trip in feb a huge group got in behind us and spent the whole ride very very loudly singing happy birthday in another language while taking flash pictures the whole time. it totally ruined the ride. i couldnt even hear the potc music and got off with blinded eyes and a headache. it was the first time i was really angry in disneyland
Im guilty aswell. The photos i took though were terrible. I no longer take photos on rides. I also hate it when people take videos on rides, espially when a cast member tells them to stop filming but once the castmember leaves they just carry on filming again.
Quote from: "littlehairmaid"Haha me saying this I bet when I go in Sep I`ll be tortured by flash`s of light in my face and "CHEEEERS!" HAHA :?
When are you going in September. I'll have to get my camera ready. :P
(//http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o427/Brtweed1976/4066-Flashbulb.jpg)
I had a girl in front of me on POTC once and she was taking photos with flash non-stop. I could also see the screen of her camera the hole way thru the ride, gahh!
I think just some common-sense is required.
I mainly record videos instead of taking pictures, I will never use a video light and use the viewfinder instead of the screen.
Also, I only ever record on attractions which allow video taping.
With photographs I do not see a problem with the Fantasyland dark-rides (e.g. Peter Pan) As the flash will only disturb yourselves and not lots of boats (e.g. on Pirates/IASW)
Yeh I do the same. I saw most of disneyland through a viewfinder last year and have vouched not to do the same this summer - just taking a few essential shots.
I hate flash photography in general *shudders with the thought of the histogram reading* when it's direct and especially on rides As it reveals details which are supposed to be hidden. It makes me fairly angry and I bet the dragon under the castle agrees.
HAHA Petes Dragon! :D am going on the 16th so get your big flash bulb on the ready :D/
I agree that the LCD screen of video cameras and photo cameras can be disturbing just as any flash. But I think disney will never be able to make guests turn their LCD screens off. My brand new point and shoot camera doesn't even have an optical viewfinder.
But disney should get more serious when asking guests not to take flash photos.
On Saturday we went on Cinemagique and there was the host girl starting her speech at the beginning of the show, and she first said in French that no flash photography was allowed. She hadn't finished the sentence when there was a flash straight on her face. Some of us started laughing at the situation but I then was mad at the guy who took the picture and was sitting near me. I turned to him to give him a very angry stare :P Thankfully there was no flash photography until the end of the show, in the "gone with the wind-kissing" segment some people decided to ignore the flash ban.
for those of you who have been at disney US parks, what is it like these days? I remember in 1995, 1996 and 2000 being told all the time (by signs and CMs) not to even dare to take my flash camera out :P
It does spoil it all for many attractions!
This year I took non flash pics of IASW and they turned out quite good (considering that I didn't know how to change the settings of my new camera). The Peter Pan ones turned out terrible though.
As for the fireworks and some pics as castle at night... I can't take a picture at nighttime without the flash. it has a motion detector and the slightest movement (even the pulse in your hand) makes the picture all blurry. so i have to use the flash even if i don't intend to illuminate the area or the subject of the picture.
so... this year all of the fireworks pictures have lots of well illuminated heads on them. i'll have a hard work using photoshop to darken them
maybe i should buy a dslr camera and stay away from the point and shoot ones?
TBH i dont mind flash photos on dark rides but then again weve always gone on a boat / carriage etc of our own due to how many of us there were. i am one of the guilty ones though altho for some reason get embarassed taking flash photos in dark rides
Flash photos in dark rides just make me laugh... they aren't going to see anything for the most part unless they have some super whiz-bang camera. Its the same people who tend to take photos of the fireworks
Some people video fireworks too... how dull would that be to anyone else who has to watch the vid? And if its you watching, its not quite going to be the same as being there!
As for It's A Small World, in all the other versions in the world, it has a lovely black ceiling and walls, making it definitely a dark ride, with the set pieces standing out... I've always hated that DLP's is WHITE... it shows all the speakers and air con and everything, it spoils it! :(
I did photograph the fireworks, without flash:
I also videotaped it, for myself, and I actually do enjoy looking back at it.
The new clubhouse asks beforehand not to use the flash. They are nice enough to let you use camera's and videos so long as there is no flash. Some ppl just carry on regardless and the CM's did tend to go up and remind then!
Here's an example pic taken with no flash. And we only took pics to put in my kids scrapbooks as they love the clubhouse soooo much.

I think these pics are just fine and no flash was needed to spoil the experience.
