Title: Phantom Manor
Post by: Disneyland Paris Treasures on January 14, 2009, 12:10:39 PM
When we were at park last week I could not believe my eyes when I saw this new "effect" on the outside of Phantom Manor:

As seen from in front of the Manor (//http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYYwdmof9lo&fmt=18)

As seen from the right side of the Manor (//http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D29KqKj9n9g&fmt=18)

On the windows of the left side there is the same effect, although I didn't film it. So this "effect" spans all three sides of the house and it goes on and on and on, no random pattern or breaks of any kind.

This looked so silly that I was sure this must be some technical problem or maybe some maintenance going on but the effect was there for every night so some day I asked a PM Cast Member and he tried to assure me that this is not a new effect and that this is supposed to be Ms. Ravenswood !!??.

In my opinion this effect is so repetitive and continuous that it looks mechanical and stupid. In addition to that it totally ruins the great "Phantom appearing in the window" effect on the right side of the house.

I had heard people mentioning that Mrs Ravenwood wanders around the manor at night with candle, so I can only imagine this is the effect they are talking about.

Although the effect seems to be far too fast :? it looks like someone turned on the effect on superfast mode!

i think that from the video of the front it looks pretty good. on the side it does look mechanical and repetitive, but i like it in the first video :-)

I've never seen that lighting before but i know that where the light is in the videos the bride is standing there at the window at the front and the Phantom is standing at the right, take a look at HiddenDLRP.com, there are articles about them two.  Maybe they've added lighting to it, i'm not sure.

That looks too fast. If it was slowed down or a bit more random I suppose it would look awesome but it doesn't, hmm, I'll make up my mind about it if it's still doing it when I go in Feb.

Im curious, can anyone confirm if this effect is still active? I know PM is in rehab but the house effects would still be on, wouldn't they?

The ride is currently undergoing a planned refurbishment. No demolition involved!

Let's hope it's fixed soon, whatever's happened! It's my favourite attraction in DLRP! :) I find it very ironic that it's reopening on the 13th February, Friday 13th!

As for the effect, I've never seen that before and I'm not quite sure what to think of it! Hmmm...

i would also point out that the maintenance dates that PM is currently got is also the same dates it has always had to be closed for work to be done even in October it was still planned for the same dates ;)
Title: Floating Leota in Phantom Manor?
Post by: Willow on February 13, 2009, 09:51:22 PM
Someone on MiceChat is reporting that during Phantom Manor's refurb the Floating Leota from the US Parks has been added to our Seance scene!

Can any of the regular CM posters on here verify this?

If its true, its about time that Phantom Manor got some new effects and the Floating Leota is a worthy addition to the attraction without destroying the unique storyline.

Floating or not floating, Leota needs a technical upgrade yesterday. So this would be fantastic news. But I for one am starting to doubt the validity of this rumor, since no one else has reported on it, not even on the French boards where they're always very much on top of things.

Phantom Manor remains closed today (the 14th) and is not likely to open tomorrow either.

Ah well. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

DO YOU KNOW #80

It would be great to get a floating leota. I liked this effect very much at WDW. Hopefully DLRP's version will get an update like the Hauntad Mansion in WDW in the near future.

I would have prefered floating Leota but a HD Leota is still a pretty good improvement. The projection effect was looking very poor.

Agreed. Even stationary a Magic Kingdom-style Leota would be a huge improvement.

The one from the front of the house looks quite good, with the side view, it kinda looks as if some one is just walking along it with a torch...

But with the front it looks quite effective...

From those pictures, i feel i prefer the older ones, seems more Classic for me than the new HD projections...

but thats just me, i prefer classic Disney than alot of this new fangles stuff they doing...
Ok going off topic quick... I adore Classic Disney's look, like all the princess films and that instead of like Hannah Montan and High School Musical... Keep it classic with Mickey Mouse and that...

Ok back to topic!!

And somehow more in-keeping with the period too... the make-up for example.

Although... Leota does look a little like The Joker, and the standing Bride still looks too much like just a mannequin with a projected face... It's just a bit strange that no other part of her body is illuminated like say Buzz Lightyear is.

Great to see something fresh at Phantom Manor though. The story and overall design might be fairly classic, but the technology behind it needs these continual updates.

Btw: I've combined the two PM topics that were on the front page.

Well, it's "Little Leota" - so named because, at the American version, it's the same face being projected onto both heads, the face of Leota Toombs (yes, that was really her last name). Only Little Leota is actually voiced by Leota Toombs though, Madame Leota is voiced by Eleanor Audley (who also voiced Maleficent, I believe).

Why yes, I am a bit of a Mansion/Manor nut.

Yup! It's too bad both women are dead. Their replacement at Phantom Manor isn't bad by any means, but all the gothic-shade lipstick in the world aren't going to make her half as good as Ms Toombs and Ms Audley. Bless them, haha.

As for why Leota is dressed as the bride... I suppose that's because the Haunted Mansion has no storyline and it's just another random gimmick thrown in there? In Phantom Manor, though, Little Leota's face is different(ly made up?) from Leota Leota. So even though their voices are the same, "Little Leota" here is probably supposed to be "Little Bride" and no one else.

They probably used Oona Lind's voice for both because, well, voice actresses who can do eerie in two languages aren't easy to come by. But I'm just guessing.

Ah, finally, a video.

To be honest, she looks a little like Walt Disney World's Leota from back when they first got a rear-projected one. In order to have enough space for all her mouth movements, they had to give her some extra chin and face. They used to joke she'd gained a few pounds.

The problem, I think, is that there are no shadows on her face in the footage itself. She's just a pair of eyes, a nose and a mouth on a blank canvas. Unlike the Haunted Mansion's Leota who has very dramatic shadows under her cheekbones etc.:

See what I mean? Same projection system, same head (probably), but the footage makes all the difference.

Ah well. At least it's brighter now.

They actually changed the lighting in the seance room completely. All the light parts between the figures are dark now and the figures are being illuminated with black light. It gives a very spooky effect much more like the original seance rooms in the HMs ... very well done I think!

I also did a couple of pics of Little Leota ... and it seems as if the projection does not really fit her head. Here they are:

Maybe that is due to the projection not fitting properly? It could be a good thing whilst they fix the problem, it shows they are thinking about the problem and don't want to spoil the show too much.

Little Bride's face doesn't appear to be covered by a veil any more. The nose still looks a bit Stephen Fry-ish though.

Can I just say that the new Madam Leota is, as the young people say, an epic fail. I've done Phantom Manor about six times now since the refurbishment, and I just keep thinking she looks like the sort of failed transvestite popular in British comedy.

The Haunted Mansions' Leotas look splendid. It's a shame.

Yes, that's an excellent analogy, haha.

I still think the problem (at this point) is not with the technology but with the footage. It's just eyes and lips on a white background, so her physical head — which has a huge jaw to fit all her mouth positions — is emphasized far too much. And that's what makes her look like a Little Britain character.

I suppose that footage worked for the old projection system, but on the new head, not so much.

The American Leota projection is much more defined.

The American Leota is far superior to our version.

All in all, Phantom Manor does need some work done to make it look less, ride-y hehe.

I especially hate that you can hear the mechanics clattering at times.

From what I can see, the new Madame Leota seems to be based on The Rocky Horror Show's "Magenta":

It is translated as "Not all of me will die" . With this phrase Horace ends his poetical work "Odes".

Quote from: "TR_Wolf"From what I can see, the new Madame Leota seems to be based on The Rocky Horror Show's "Magenta":

Or is it just me?

Hi all! It was a long while ago that I posted that on my most recent trip to DLP (last September) I had spotted something near Phantom Manor that I had never heard about before...

Well, I haven't been to DLP since (unfortunately), but I discovered an amazing website which has a video that shows what I saw!

It's a couple of gravestones that I managed to spot when I was on the River Rogue Keelboats, but the guy who made the video, captured them from aboard the Riverboat.

Here is the first:

A close up:

The sunken tombstone (my favourite!):

The website I found them on is absolutely brilliant! http://www.martinsvids.net (http://www.martinsvids.net) has loads of really in-depth videos on all of the resorts, particularly DLP. These pictures were found on a detailed movie 3 part film about DLP that's 3 hours long! I really recommend that you check it out. Here is the direct link to the movie: http://www.martinsvids.net/?cat=98&paged=3 (http://www.martinsvids.net/?cat=98&paged=3) The tombstones are found at 20mins 40secs on the first of the three parts.

These tombstones might not be that secret after all, but I was so astonished when I found them last year. I've been to DLP 4 times and I thought that if I had missed them for the first 3 times I'd visited, then surely there must be others on the board who have done too!

Little known fact:

The scene of The Bride sobbing into her hanky is taken from this famous painting:

Its one of the first ever optical illusions and is called "All Is Vanity".

Also, can anyone post a pic of the latin sign "Non Omnis Moriar" which is supposed to be wall of the manor somewhere...

It is indeed on the gate plaque, but not very easy to read I'm afraid.
