According to the French 15th Blog we will see a few changes to the shops very soon!
The redevelopment of the facade of Walt Disney Studios Store Front Lot because shops are not visible enough. Des travaux sont prévus pour "ouvrir la façade, casser l'ensemble des vitrines pour mettre des portes, donc ça va être beaucoup plus aéré" Work is expected to "open the cover, breaking all the windows to doors, so it will be much more airy"
La confirmation du projet de construction d'une boutique de 2500 m² à l'entrée de Disney Village "pas pour demain mais ça va venir assez vite" (World of Disney) The confirmation of the plan to build a store of 2500 square meters at the entrance to Disney Village "not tomorrow but it will come fairly quickly" (World of Disney)
Le prochain thème pour les vitrines à partir du printemps prochain: "les jardins à la française" The next theme for the windows from next spring: "French gardens"
THERE IS A VIDEO BUT IT SEEMS ONLY AVAILABLE FRENCH
Thanks for the news. The Walt Disney Studios Store thing seems the most interesting. We've been noticing for years their desperate attempts to tell people rushing past: "THIS IS A SHOP! LOOK INSIDE!", so I'm not sure how to feel about a "redevelopment" of the facade...
The planters do hide the windows, and the shop does seem quite distant from the courtyard. The facade hardly tempts you inside like the wonderful Main Street ones... so there's a chance they could really improve this, add a bit more interest to Front Lot. On the other hand, they might just fill the whole of Place des Freres Lumiere with jumble sale-style clothes rails of princess dresses and horrible Disney Princess-branded canopies.
I said this a few months ago about the random planters which appeared in Front Lot for a few weeks that they were to try and force the traffic around the sides of Front Lot and closer to the shop. I thought it worked quiete well, nobody was walking through the middle except one or two people.
I changed the topic title from "Resort Shops" and moved this to Walt Disney Studios Park board because these changes at Walt Disney Studios Store have begun:

Apparently they're "opening up" the façade and some of the windows will be replaced by doors.
Oh and hallelujah, that hideous Disney Princess banner over the red canopy has gone!
There were already changes inside past weekend. The toys and cloths department switched sides. The "boutique" room on the left now sells baby and child cloths and toys.
Interesting. I never did see many people heading into the store so I suppose a change can only be a good thing.
It is a good thing. The facilities along the Front Lot plaza, although nicely designed and decorated, seem tucked away and uninviting.* It speaks for the Main Street shops' powers of persuasion that they manage to lure masses of people inside despite one of the world's greatest weenies (Sleeping Beauty Castle) beckoning in the distance, yet the Front Lot shops can't win the battle against Shoebox 1.
So "opening up" the place might be just what it needs.
*It only recently occurred to me that buying a ticket or an Annual Pass might be a lot quicker there because of that. No lines. They do have an Annual Pass service at the Studios, right?
You still have to go into Disneyland Park for the Passport office.
This annuel passport office is seasonal and open on busy weekends so if you renew before May go straight to Disneyland AP office. the annuel passport office at WDS is also hard to find tooked away in the corner with minimul signage some obscured by trees.
This should be good! I must admit, I always bypass the store (haven't been in there since 2002), unlike the Emporium at DLP which I almost always go in. Hopefully this will "persuade" me to have a look. It'd great if it added something to the area too.

Thanks for the information. Seems like another time-saver for those in the know. It wouldn't surprise me if no one on these forums had ever used it, though. Or the regular ticket booths, or Studio Services... All of which might benefit from a little "opening up" somewhere in the future.
QuoteIt wouldn't surprise me if no one on these forums had ever used it
You probably expected this reply from me...... but we have used the WDS AP office before to get my mum's AP... It's basically just a tiny desk with 2 or 3 camera's on it and no waiting area at all. I got photos, will put 'm up on Photos Magiques some time.
This is way off-topic, but... Though I can understand the idea of having the main AP office within DLP to catch people while they're enjoying themselves, it might be worth considering finding a central place for it outside the gates, perhaps in that at-this-rate-will-never-happen World of Disney store. I always dread the process of getting my AP, and not just because they never understand UK postal addresses.
I've seen huge queues at the WDS ticket booths and actually only ever used those ones myself. The only problem is with the AP sales and also Guest Storage -- I'm never sure if they're consistently open every day, so I'd always go to DLP by default.
MMP fans will be pleased to know the fences are now decorated:

Well, it's not that off-topic, is it? The Studios Store isn't the only Front Lot facility with problems. It's good to see they're at least acknowledging this.
(What is off-topic: The Bureau Passeport Annuel in Central Plaza isn't bad at all (best view ever), but my issue with it is that there's a ten-minute walk between the person you pay to and the person who handles your membership. I can't be the only person who's forever having to walk back and forth to get everything in order after having stood in line for fifteen minutes both at the ticket booths and the Bureau. It seems a little unnecessary and indeed, perhaps they would be better off concentrating it in one office outside the parks. But then you can't really complain for that price!)
Any idea when it will be ready? I always go inside. As soon as I detect a store I go in. I'm excided to see how it will turn out. :)
i think it's really good idea to change it a bit to draw more attention, i first didn't notice the shop too, only when i looked at my made pictures in the evening, so i visited it the second day.
Well, this is kind of on topic...
Apparently, the average guest spends €10 on souvenirs at the Disneyland Park, and only €5 at the Walt Disney Studios.
I'm not surprised. Although the park had an expansive, distinct line of merchandise in its first few years, that's no longer the case, and the entire park only has two stores that you really can't miss (Legends of Hollywood and the Tower of Terror gift shop). And Legends is hardly the kind of store you walk into for the scenery. I imagine €3 of those €5 is spent at the Tower of Terror gift shop, the park's current little shopping oasis.
I wonder what all this means from a business point of view, though. Does the park have too few stores or perhaps too many already?
In any case, as Kristof pointed out... There isn't a doorway inviting enough for the Studios Store to really raise park spending unless it carries a line of merchandise that can't also be found ten feet away in the Legends store. It might just move some business away from its neighbor.
I bring you back to my comment re reelection of Jay Rasulo to the supervisory board feb 09.
When you look at things like Merchandising the more shops that have identical products do not increase sales as Guests will only buy a product once if your talking about the Disney Stores this policy would work but not in Parks where people look for something different which reflects the overall theme of the Park.
Don't always take things from the company line talk to industry insiders and reporters such as Jim Hill and Mouseplanet who covered the departure of the last CEO of Disneyland CA and the real reasons why he departed from the Company and took a possition with a large hotel chain ask them both if they can give you a link to these old articles you will find it very intresting.
Thank you for bringing up the discrepencies in Sales WDS Park I will try to address this with the company over the next year.
Quote from: "pussinboots"I wonder what all this means from a business point of view, though. Does the park have too few stores or perhaps too many already?
I'm guessing in that wonderful Jay Rasulo era they looked over to DLP when planning WDS and noticed "hey, most people only go in the shops near the entrance/exit". So then they piled 99% of the Studios' retail into that single area, not realising that the only reason people only go in Main Street's shops is because the ones in the rest of the park had already been watered down by all selling the same merchandise. Anyway, just so happens that
two Emporium-style general merchandise stores doesn't work, especially when one is quite bland.
So wouldn't the best thing be to split WDS Store into several (2 or 3) smaller, distinct units? Maybe keep a route through inside, like the routes between Disney & Co. and Lilly's in Main Street, but drop the generic name and have say a specifically-named clothing shop, a Harrington's-type shop, etc...
I'm not entirely sure a few doors will solve the problem.
Really love your idea of having another Harrington's-type shop in WDS Park, they could use the other half as a cafe adding more life to the area which is seen by most guests as a pre show Experience and not properly connected with the main Park.
Quote from: "phantom247"they could use the other half as a cafe adding more life to the area which is seen by most guests as a pre show Experience and not properly connected with the main Park.
Funnily enough, I almost said that myself. The section closest to Studio 1 would make a great little place to get a drink, much better (and actually bigger) than Café Cafés. There's plenty of space for a terrace in Summer too.
The small "boutique" section Kristof mentioned would be perfect for a higher-end boutique like Storybook Store or Harrington's ('Hyperion Collectibles', perhaps?). The middle section could then exclusively sell proper "Walt Disney Studios" branded merchandise ('Disney Bros. Store'?). This is where you'd expect to find that, but currently it seems to be mostly in Studio 1. Maybe a few items from each attraction too, and
no Princess dresses or such...
Studio Photo seems to be overrun by generic merchandise too, with very little actual "photo" stuff...

All excellent ideas. The park is obviously full of unexplored retail potential. Which is strange when you realize that a store is the attraction that makes money! (They sure knew this when they built Disney's California Adventure, a rather similar park in most other areas, which when it opened had about fourteen stores to every ride.)
Think of how much Toon Studio could be improved with a lavish store that pays homage to Disney's rich animation history. Imagine something loosely related to the Animation pavilion at Disney's California Adventure, with different, dramatically lit rooms based around themes like the Sorcerer's Workshop, the Beast's Library and something involving villains, each offering a different genre of merchandise ranging from clothes to Christmas ornaments. And what better place for overpriced collectibles than a store like this in a land like this?
(Yes, I realize the shop in the Sorcerer's Hat lives up to some of those criteria, but honestly, in Disneyland Park terms the place is about equal to that corner in the Discovery Arcade where they sell the things they can't fit into Harrington's.)
But there's obviously something stopping them from investing more than petty cash on stores in this park, which is why I asked whether perhaps they've figured that two stores make more money than ten.

So much better!
This corner of the store used to be so dead and boring, now it's all fresh and bright and open. Or some other antonym. :) Good job!
Edit: Although I still hate how they put all these clothes racks outside boutiques, like they're scruffy market stalls...
I had my doubts about this at first, but I have to agree that from an interior point of view it does look a lot more welcoming. I wonder what the exterior looks like though...

Hmmmmm... It's not bad; not amazing, but not bad. I could live with it
It can't be just me who wouldn't have noticed the change?
What are those black things to the left of the doors and right of the window? Drainpipes? Have they always been there?
It looks great from this angle anyway, ignoring those. Although after all that work they've shot themselves in the foot by filling the outside with the same balloons and "I heart MK" t-shirts you can find anywhere. If they want people to walk into more of the shops in the parks, surely they need to put different and interesting stuff outside? I think this would just flag in peoples' minds "oh, generic shop, no need to look in there..." :?
This really would make a wonderful little café now.
I don't know if I would have noticed any change !! The racks of T-shirts look really cheap though and let down the look of it ! I'm sure if they made a small coffee shop or ice cream parlour in that corner it would entice people over ,who would then wander around the store !
Quote from: "RnRCj"It can't be just me who wouldn't have noticed the change?
I wouldn't have noticed them either! I still can't really see what they've done that's so drastic. Also, I hate the rack of clothes outside the doors, it just looks so cheap, like some awful tourist shop you get in Hollywood.

I think the coffee shop/ice cream parlour is a great idea! WDS is missing little gems like we get on Main Street, they could totally have their own 1930s version of The Gibson Girl!

OK, well at least those hideous lights have gone! Shame about the picture of Walt though, hopefully it'll find a place elsewhere?

Your are totally right Anthony! A nice little bakery/coffeeshop would have been a great addition! Never noticed the drainpipes....hmm... :-k
DLRP should keep their focus more on quality and not only on quantity....
ps. indeed a pity for the lose of the great Walt pictures.....
I loved the 2 shops in the Frontlot anyway, I am not sure about the changes but if it helps bring in more people then I guess that's good!
Just going to add some quick photos before they make their way on DLRP Today. At WDS Store, they're adding in two new window arches in the middle of the store's exterior, fitting neatly into the arches which were already in the building:

Inside, the middle area (where the old Pin Trading Station used to be, more recently a postcard stand) is all cordoned off, but I couldn't tell if they're putting more doors in here or just large windows...

Seems like the planter outside is gone for good, anyway.
Nice, round, windows! Definitely an improvement. :D
I hope one day the whole of Front Lot is refurbished. I think it's too open at the moment, and not cosy enough for the cold Parisian weather! We need more trees and some nice little food outlets and seating areas!

To be honest I quite like the idea of something in Front Lot and the original part of WDS that's a little off-centre... Like it was done by a human rather than a Bland Architecture supercomputer.
Unfortunately, despite all these changes and a few good ones like moving all the plushes into the "cosier" separate left-hand room of the store, it's still selling the same generic stuff inside, with little to no separation in the main part of the shop. It would be so easy to just stick a different name above these new doors specific to clothing, toys or sweets. Having 20 identical "Walt Disney Studios Store" signs does nothing. The shop was still empty all weekend whilst the very nicely divided and themed Legends of Hollywood was packed.
Thanks for the pics anthony! I like that there´s finally some action at the frontlot and I think this doors could reach into a better use of the whole frontlot.

Totally agree, will hopefully add some character to the area!
I came across this quote on Jim Hill Media (it's about the new Buena Vista Street at Disney's California Adventure):
Quote"Look at Main Street U.S.A. That's one very effective retail corridor. Whenever you enter or exit Disneyland, you're forced to walk along this one very narrow street that then takes you by all these windows which are loaded with merchandise. In a situation like that, people just can't help but shop.
Now take a look at Sunshine Plaza and its wide open spaces. There's nothing about this part of that Park that naturally funnels people into Greetings from California or Engine-Ears Toys. Which is why [these] two shops combined don't do a 10th of the business that Disneyland's Emporium does."
http://jimhillmedia.com/blogs/jim_hill/ ... oject.aspx (http://jimhillmedia.com/blogs/jim_hill/archive/2009/01/27/forget-about-attention-to-detail-it-s-attention-to-retail-that-s-really-driving-dca-s-buena-vista-street-project.aspx)
It seems to resonate here at the Walt Disney Studios as well, doesn't it?
absolutly! They should rethink about the whole concept of frontlot. More doors and more windows are a first step. But why not having a litte frontlot café (LITTLE CAFÈ DE FRONTLOT  to find a name before the imagineers create something totally stunning  ), a Walt´s Boutique nearby with special high class merchandising. But don´t forget to integrate Studio 1. They should do here a real hollywood bvd. with more theming more details and real shops. This "look behind the fences"-thing is a nice touch but has the problem of little ambiance behind the shop doors as main street has. They should find a new concept for the complete frontlot to keep more life inside and make it a cool place to stay and not just a entrance to run through as fast as you can.
The problem with Front Lot is that it comes far too soon after you enter the park. When you walk through the gates of Disneyland Park, you get that moment of the "lights dimming" before the curtain is raised on Main Street. In Front Lot you're thrown right into it, and still too busy thinking about putting your ticket away safely, getting a park map, etc by the time you walk into Studio 1.
Walt Disney Studios Store is really only comparable to the easily missed Plaza East and West boutiques over the hub. If the Studios is to have a good Main Street-esque "retail corridor" then it would be better being Hollywood Boulevard.

Bland, but rather nice with the big windows and better-placed paydesks.
Think this looks really good , and the tops of the arched windows which looked mismatched before look fine;and one of them is a door as thought.Must agree a cafe would be fantastic there !
I think this stores problem is that it is too far to one side of the entrance ,of the park ; you don't naturally walk right past it.You are either hurrying in to the park in the morning,or too tired as you leave to be bothered to walk across the front lot to have a look.I find the whole of Studio One far too cramped and tend to rush through it into the park.It is not really a place I want to linger,I remember being so disappointed when I first saw inside after all the descriptions of it prior to the Studios opening !!!!
Many thanks for the comparison Anthony, I was searching a picture of the Store as it was before! (I updated the article on DLRP Times :D )

I like the improvements, they made a good job, but I don't think that it will pull more people into the shop. Although you are already in the park, you don't recognize the shop, because you are more interested in the things that awaits you behind Studio 1. Maybe it will get busier when guest leave the park.
I have always liked this shop, because it is not so packed than all the other shops in the resort.
In my opinion it would be better to downsize this shop and to use the space for a little cafe with a nice outdoor sitting area. In return it would be great to get a big shop inside the "real" park.

Well done!!
Still one of my favorite shops, because it wasn't as packed as the Emporium.
As I said a few posts before, they should downsize the shop, because I don't think that this shop will attract more people. It would be better to have a bigger shop in the "main park" behind Studio 1. They could use the new space for a little café with a nice sit down area in Front Lot.
They did a nice job of fitting those windows into the existing spaces, though perhaps they could now do with some canopies above them, and plants filling the empty area below. Where has the dodgy pink car gone?
And I'd like it a whole lot more if they kept the charity shop clothes rails inside the store.
