Title: Les Mystères du Nautilus, what's the attraction
Post by: Pete's Dragon on December 03, 2008, 03:32:02 PM
If I was to sum up the attraction in one word it would wither be

"Next" , "Eegh" or "Boring"

I don't get it and niether did my son. So what 's the appeal to all those who actually make a point of visiting it ? Whose holiday isn't complete unless they've walked 20,000 leagues under the sea, and why ?

Don't get me wrong, it's not walk-throughs in general I don't like. The Robinson Treehouse is good, and so is Aladdins. Maybe it's because I was on the proper ride in WDW when I was a kid, and was very disappointed to find this stripped down version at DLRP.

Please explain what makes it good for you.

I also went on the WDW one as a kid, and was greatly dissapointed by the one in Paris...  The first time I went in it I was really expecting the same kind of ride I remembered from all those years before - I mean Phantom Manor, BTM, POTC... they were all similar!

But now that I know what it is, I personally like it... The theming is great, there's plenty of little artifacts to look at, and because hardly anyone goes there you can really take your time!! And then there's the big octopus, when the windown opens, that's always fun... I don't know, I can really imagine I'm inside the real Nautilus... Shame is often closed.

Its just a nice little walkthrough which adds something to the park on a whole. Its not going to bring in the crowds but its just a nice little corner of the park which deson't bother anyone.

Its totally a Disney thing, many of the traditional Disney fans love it, its similar to the Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough which recently opened again, in my opinion its something Walt would like in a park.

i like the walktrough too, always visit it at least one time and wait for the octopus attack.
I think it 's well done creating atmosphere and i don't expect anything more from it anyway.

The Nautilus was added for a couple of reasons, one because it is a reference to the submarines at Disneyland CA;and it is part of the theme of Discoveryland that has links to discovery in many ways,Hyperion is the air,Autopia the land ,Space Mountain obviously space, and Nautilus shows the discovery of the seas !!
Didn't work all this out for myself,it is in the Disneyland Paris book !!!!! I ain't that smart !!

I think attractions like this are the theme park equivalent of books. Their appeal may go over the heads of many whose minds have been numbed by modern man's successful endeavor to create a culture which never requires its people to employ their brains for more than three consecutive seconds before being relieved by something shiny and fast-moving... But they're there for those who appreciate them.

And things seem to be looking up for the medium. If even Californians — who have so lost the concept of walking that they no longer build sidewalks — can appreciate the return of the Sleeping Beauty walk-through, then surely Europeans could once again appreciate the Nautilus, the Labyrinth, Aladdin and the Treehouse. Ideally, to the point where Euro Disney decides to finance a decent refurbishment for them all.

I like the other walk-throughs, just not Nautilus. I dunno, it seems more like walking into a history museum that an attraction. They should have copied the WDW version.

I love the walk through, and it has a great pastiche to the sets on display at the original DL in the 50's and 60's. To me, the greatness of the Disney park experience is in creating rich environments to be explored, and the Nautilus epitomises this more than most attractions at DLP. I would rather Indy be ripped out before the Nautilus. I love it (but it would be even better if it were a themed queue to an attraction similar to the one at Tokyo Disney Sea!

When last did the naysayers actually watch "20 000 Leagues Under The Sea"? Obviously the feel of the attraction and the film are lost on them. All I need is the James Mason Narration while I walk through the tunnels into the attraction, and I'm full of gooseflesh!

The atmosphere is perfect. Then again, if you're deaf...

The other awesome thing is that it was part of the original plans for Discoveryland! One of two sole survivors! Awesome!

Any perfect day at Disneyland for me, includes 'Les Mysteres Du Nautilus'.

I absolutely agree.

Nautilus is one of my favorite rides in the park, it may have something to do with being a huge Jules Verne fan I admit, the set-up rocks, the atmosphere is fabulous, I just ADORE it.
If they ever get rid of that I will be very very VERY upset.

I also love how there is a Nautilus in the lake around Space Mountain, and how the actual attraction is an underground walk-through to similuate the idea of a submarine vessel.
It's definitely one of the finer feats of imagineering.

More importantly, when have they read the book by Jules Verne?
It was a fantastic book (which remains one of my favorite books) before it was a fantastic movie after all.

Its an example of how the Imagineers work can give so much atmosphere even in what is a simple small walk through area. It's adding to the theme of the land in a unique way.

Soak up the details and atmosphere, dont think of it as a ride!

This threat is quite depressing really. Disney was always about the theming. Bu with people calling LMDN a yawn fest and others being excited about the Six Flags/Thorpe Park style Toy Story Play Land, it shows I too am a relic of Disney's past.

Something like the Nautilus or Adventure Isle is far more inspiring and interesting that meet and greets. Heck, Disney used to be wonderful at offering varied options. Not so much anymore. And the staggered opening and closing of the Nautilus is scary. Disney have been known to do this so there is data to back up that an attraction may be unpopular, therefore a candidate for closure/to rip it out (look at Le Visionarium, Wonders of Life, World of Motion etc.).

I completely argee with you. This little things and the very high themening is what makes a disney park.
It brings atmosphere and you can ejoy walking around and not just go on the rides.

best sample is WDS, here i wanna do as fast all rides so i can get out as fast as possible couse
its boring, ugly, and real mess of a park.
Disney parks need something to discover, good quality and themed rides, rich detailed theming and a lot
of landscaping.

i really hope they don´t think about it to close that, i love to walk in there and soak up the rich details.
also it can´t be so expansive to run this walk through! they should think about closing Honey, I Shrunk the Audience! befor closing LMDN!!!!!

I love LMDN, unfortunately we missed is during our last visit. It was closed most of the time.

I think DLP is too good for Europe, because many people don't appreciate the great theming. For many it is just about rides. We didn't ride that many attractions and sometimes it was just great to walk around the park to enjoy the atmosphere.

This is how I spend my time in WDS too, I don't hang around. I literally get in there, do what I want to do, then get back to Disneyland as quick as possible! I hope that changes one day, I really do.

As far as LMDN goes, I LOVE it! It's one of my favourite places to visit in Disneyland park, it's atmosphere is fantastic. The entrance is fantastic! Another favourite bit of mine, is the exit turnstile in the form of a propellor!

I don´t think so, the eurpeans like the detailed theming, many visitors walk araound at the park and soak up the atmosphere. if you look at adventure island, main street U.S.A ect, there are everytime visitors walking around.
and if you look now at WDS, how many visitors hang around at front lot or any other place! no one just because
its boring and ugly. here all they wanna do are the rides, but this is not the same at disneyland park.

I really think the problem why no one visit this walkthrough is because of the opening time, and also because
at this corner is not much to do, so the visitors hang around at the other side of discoveryland.

This seems to be the standard opening time for Nautilus these days.  It's good to see it at least has set hours, but I wish it was open for longer.

in four trips i have never done this walkthrough, i also havent done the treehouse or the caves as i couldnt ever see somewhere to put the buggy. i am a bit dubious about leaving it somewhere unless there are other buggies around but i am definitely going to do it on my next trip in march. im not one for thrill rides so i spend a lot of time taking in whats around the parks i even have some random pics of trees and things

I'm sure you'll like it a lot then.  Maybe you can ask a CM where a good place to leave the buggy is?  I'm sure they know somewhere near enough to the ride if there aren't any buggies parked right outside.

Thats exactly how I see it. (Though I dont think I know of this Castle walkthrough thingy?)

Its not actually an attraction, its just something to do, that sums Disney up. Just think of how much money that would have cost them, for nothing, its just a simple little walk through, which is superbly themed.

Its serves the same purpose as the Aladdin walkthrough.

For some reason, some people only consider an "attraction" an attraction if it involves getting your arse parked into some kind of vehicle while preferably being accelerated around at a certain number of Gs.

I really love this walk-trough and I hope Disney will continue to treat it with some dignity. I don't consider it as a seperate attraction, it's just part of the park. The interior is very close to the version presented in the classic movie and it has an awesome level of detail.

It's those kind of attractions that make Disney unique. It's just a walk-trough with a small show now and then, yet it's executed with so much detail for perfection.

This also marks the main difference between WDS and the Disneyland Park. You can stroll trough it for hours without getting bored and ever going onto one of the distincively marked attractions.

The fact that it looks a lot like the movie, and is so strongly reminiscent of the book is definitely one of the reasons I love it too.

The Nautilus is my favourite attraction of Discoveryland. It is a true Imagineering masterpiece. Every time I'm in Discoveryland I can't help but get drawn into it.

It's shame that some of the effects no longer work, but I think there is a refurb coming soon (?) so hopefully it'll be looking good as new after that.

In my opinion "Nautilus" is an attraction, because it transfers you in a complete different world. In this case into 20000 Miles under the Sea. Didn't Walt Disney build Disneyland to bring his movies alive. I think Nautilus is a good example for this.

But I wouldn't consider the City Hall an attraction, despite it is listed on the park map as an attraction.

Attractions don't have to be necessarily rides where you have a series of sensorial experiences. Les Mysteres du Nautilus is an attraction in which the guest is led to let imagination make the experience. The same as in the Swiss Family Treehouse, Adventure Isle, Captain Hook's Pirate Ship, Alice's Courious Labirinth... This kind of attraction immerses you into the action of the story so guests can imagine themselves and play the roles they want. It's a pity that many people don't get this point and they refer to these attractions as mere museums. Next time you go into the Nautilus, let your imagination fly and play for a few minutes pretending you're Captain Nemo.

It's a brilliant attraction that should never be closed. Although I've often had to go and do it on my own because the rest of my fam aren't interested! But real fans love it. Most visitors wont go in it. BUT can you imagine if it had huge queues like in Space Mountain? It would suck! But having said that I do hope it never goes!
Title: Re: Les Mystères du Nautilus, what's the attraction
Post by: CentralPlazaPerson on March 28, 2010, 04:07:48 AM
Space mountain is put into Discoveryland for people to discover space and this attraction is meant to let visitors explore the seas but I could think of better ways to do it. I always thought Disneyland Paris should get a ride like Submarine Voyage to explore the seas. This ride is ok but I think it should be more interactive for guests instead of just walking through it e.g special effects like Armageddon. I have to say the design and interior is fantastic and seems you are actually in a real submarine.
Title: Re: Les Mystères du Nautilus, what's the attraction
Post by: dagobert on March 28, 2010, 02:01:11 PM
A submarine ride would be great, but I think there is not enough space for such a ride. If it would be built, I want to see a Nautilus themed ride, like it was at WDW and not the Finding Nemo version in Abaheim.

Nevertheless I hope that the Nautilus will open the whole day again and not just a few hours. We always missed it during our last visit. I love the theming a lot and I hope it will never be replaced. It just fits perfectly into Discoveryland.

The Nautilus is supposed to be open again now after it's refurbishment. If anyone is going soon, I'd love to hear if some of the effects are now working - like the overflowing water in the diving hole and the hydraulics in the engine room. I wonder whether they would've fixed the bubbles in the outside pond too.

The 3 times I have been to DLP the ride has never been open!  I have gone back time after time to find it closed.  And told my son how cool it would be.  Maybe I will have more luck this Nov when I return.

Sorry for bringing up an old topic.

I'm sure many people know that when you are inside the Nautilus, you are actually not in the submarine seen in Discoveryland. The showbuilding is behind Autopia. I knew that I've already seen that on a plan, but I couldn't find it anymore. Yesterday I just scrolled through the book "The Disney Mountains - Imagineering at its Peak" by Jason Surrell and there I found the plan again. This section is about Space Mountain in Paris and there is a plan of Discoveryland that shows the Nautilus showbuilding behind Autopia where the toilettes are.

Now I'm wondering how WDI is fooling people that they are not inside the submarine. I've been inside the ship so many times and I've never had the feeling that I went to the opposite direction, although I knew that I did.

I hope for the 20th anniversary they give the Nautilus the refurb it well deserves. Bring back all bubbles both outside and inside, fix the squid's mouth, the engine room etc. I can to some degree understand the problems they might have with the complex mechanics on Space Mountain's cannon but simple effects like these?
