Title: Ratatouille Living Character: Chef Rémy
Post by: Kristof on June 24, 2008, 02:17:26 PM
From WDSfans.com:

Quote from: "WDSfans"Meet Ratatouille... in real life!
Posted by raptor1982 on Tuesday, June 24 2008

No no, we're not talking about the meet 'n' greet location in Toon Studio! And we're not talking about the proposed attraction either... In fact, we're talking about a DLRP exclusive living character from Walt Disney Imagineering!

You still remember Lucky the Dinosaur, right? And Push the Trashcan who also roamed the Backlot area of our Studios Park? And then there's also the lovely Wall-E character that's going to be introduced at Disney's California Adventure Park soon! Well this time Disneyland Resort Paris will be the test ground for its own exclusive living character... And who else would be better than Rémy from Ratatouile???!!!

La Roquine reported earlier on Disney Central Plaza about the experiment and since then we've had the chance to talk to people directly involved with the project.
Imagine you're having lunch at Rendez-Vous des Stars and suddenly a Cast Member pulls a cart to your table filled with cheese. She asks if she can offer you some and removes the cover, only to reveal Rémy between a pile of cheese. He moves and talks to the unsuspecting guests around the table!

Sounds great, doesn't it! Our source revealed that Cast Member training is happening this week and as early as next week or the week after the first tests will start at the restaurants of the Disneyland Hotel and Rendez-Vous des Stars.

Sounds Great... It'll be our WALL-E... Unique and Something that fits in with the location of the Resort, Paris...

But WALL-E is that much Cuter than Remy but I've got the images of the  first negative reaction to Remy's appearance at the table where we get the shriek of fear rather than that of awe and wonder and the word 'RAT!' shrieked throughout the location. (Why Am I thinking Enchanted all of the sudden?) and secretly hoping that happens at a time where I am in the park!

I'm wondering how they'll make such a small creature look life-like, but if anyone can do it, WDI can. It'll be interesting to see how this turns out.

Well, there's no reason for being angry with him in my opinion - I also read the description and still can't really imagine how Rémy will look like?! I've seen the Trash Can in a Disney Filmparade once, but how will a "living Rémy" look like if it's no real rat?!

QuoteWell, there's no reason for being angry with him in my opinion

Who said anything about being angry?????

A Living Character is an incarnation of a Disney, Pixar or a new character through other ways than costumes.  Lucky the Dinosaur is one example, but also Crush in Turtle Talk and Stitch Live are Living Characters.

Quotebut how will a "living Rémy" look like if it's no real rat?

Animatronic?!

So is it actually in the park yet, or are they still testing etc.? I'd be really interested to see just how lifelike he'll look, although I think my mum would have a fit - she hates rats, even talking animatronic ones!

This was written on 24 June. So there's actually a chance it'll be there when I visit the park. We're going t have a pretty busy 4 days to see (well...at least try to see) all the new additions to the resort (we haven't done ToT, Stitch, seen Woody's Roundup and offcourse there's the Enchanted Fireworks).

We should manage to get a quick bite at Rendez-Vous des Stars in those day's ;)

Remy looks very cute! Hopefully he can speak aswell. But are you sure he is an animatronic? I mean, judging from this video he can be a puppet aswell. At least with Lucky, Muppet Mobile Lab, Push and WALL-E its obvious that no human is involved. Is it possible to fit a human under Remy's table?  :P

By the way, is Remy also still available for meet 'n greets at Toon Studio?! That would be weird haha. However, it seems like a nice addition for the Walt Disney Studios. Like Captain Pan mentioned, lets wait and see how long it will remain a Paris exclusive.

And now we want Muppet Mobile Lab!  8)

I hate to be negative, but I'm not that impressed. Maybe my expectations were too high, that they could make a realistic AA that small, but he looks a little robotic. I can understand what Maarten says about it being a puppet too. And if he doesn't talk, it's a bit of an anticlimax when the lid is lifted - he just kind of juts from side to side with nothing to do.

Perhaps they took the film too literally -- none of the humans ever hear Remy do more than squeak.

It's no replacement for a WALL-E or Muppet Mobile Lab.

They said me Remy doesn't come back and they told me it was just for once. To entertain the children the replacement is a gift with remy on it with pencils in it. This isn't a worhthly replacement. I hope there wrong. I am here till next week and i hope i will see him.

I'm a little more impressed with that one too. It does look more like an AA there, performing the same program of movements in a loop. It certainly looks perfectly like him, even if the face is a little blank.

Using it to entice people into the restaurant is cheap though. Who trained that guy? The Disney parks aren't some dodgy marketplace where people should shout at you to part with your money as you walk around, saying "look, a little rat that moves slightly, now PAY €30 FOR A BUFFET!!!" What happened to the Disney that used to be able to make us part with our money without us even realising?

Keep it as a little thing to wheel around the tables inside a restaurant though (preferably Rendez-Vous des Stars where it really fits) and I really like it, makes all the Ratatouille signage outside just about credible.

Here's something that should really go in the Imagineering board: If they want to entice people in, why not keep Rémy inside but put a small animatronic of Emile permanently outside (out of reach), rubbing his giant stomach and talking about how amazing the food was?

Why not giving Rendez Vous a big make-over into a nice warm cool french ratatouille-themed restaurant instead of the cold thing it is now?

I still think he could be improved if he twitched his nose, and also if he moved his eyes a little. Surely it wouldn't take too much to pull that off? :?:

Quote from: "Japper"Why not giving Rendez Vous a big make-over into a nice warm cool french ratatouille-themed restaurant instead of the cold thing it is now?

I see what you mean. However, how would a Ratatouille restaurant, similar to the one in the film, work? You can't change the exterior of the restaurant, and in my opinion  the "set of Ratatouille" approach wouldn't work that well since the restaurant clearly isn't a studio. :)

According to Photos Magiques: The restaurant represents the Studio's commissary where actors and crew come to lunch in between takes.

I think it should stay that way. Personally the restaurant reminds me of the ABC Commissary at Disney's Hollywood Studios. However, I completely agree with you that it could use a warmer atmosphere.

I wholeheartedly agree. So movement is slightly limited by the looks of things just back and forth back and forth up and down...

To Me that Remy is 1000 times better than the version Disneystores peddle as a soft toy... our living character at least looks like the rat that proves anyone can cook!

Would have thought though that they would of used this idea to bring in Remy's accomplice Linguini or Colette!

Thanks for the great video Raptor, it really shows you how great this living character really is. It is very clever, I never would have thought about making him squeak instead of speak, not only does it make him seem more realistic, but I guess it makes it easier for DLRP who would have some difficult language barriers to sort out.

Now, the sign on the outside that says 'Special Guest: Chef Remy' makes perfect sense

Quote from: "littlemermaid83"Thanks for the new video, he does look cute but he i hope he does more than just sway side to side at different speeds.
He does! He has two musical routines that we saw -- the classic French music and a very up-tempo modern song (funnier than it sounds). He can also just sit there and squeak, looking directly at you, and bow after his performance, etc.

The actual likeness to Rémy is incredible -- his eyes though they don't move are *exactly* like the real thing. It was also great to see that we never saw Rémy outside the restaurant, trying to coax people in. He's better kept as an attraction inside. The Ratatouille signs around the building now finally seem justified.

There are even more pictures and another new (but similar ) video here: http://www.dlrpmagic.com/today/2008/07/ ... tatouille/ (http://www.dlrpmagic.com/today/2008/07/29/have-a-one-on-one-with-chef-remy-the-living-character-from-ratatouille/%22%20onclick=%22window.open(this.href);return%20false;)

Yes! There seem to be other buttons too, I think Kristof said he saw the assistant pressing them on the trolley...?

Another thing which impressed me was that they can turn the platter thing around. It's fixed down, but they can turn it in the direction of the guest, which is quite smart (you'd expect all the workings of the animatronic to have been fixed down permanent below there).

For those who are wondering... This beauty is build and designed by Walt Disney Imagineering in Glendale where it was tested on the lot before being shipped to DLRP.   :)

We saw Remy inside and outside the restaurant this week, it was completely amazing!!!! I could see it kind of interact with many guests and we were in awe!
We had never been at Rendez vous des Stars and we did this time and just loved the food! and seeing Remy going from table to table was very cool we even thanked him for the wonderful food and he bowed (though we don't know if that was a coincidence) ;D

 Wooow! That looks so cute! I think I'd squeal with happiness at seeing something like that, especially if I was surprised by it. If I hadn't have seen the pictures, I wouldn't have believed that something like this would work so well!

Oh to clear things up: the Rémy animatronic in Epcot is a duplicate.  "Our" Rémy is still performing at [strike:p78rktg2]Rendez-Vous[/strike:p78rktg2] Restaurant des Stars.

I was thinking the same thing, Remy is so cute, I was wondering if there was a big cloak on the trolley for a puppeteer underneath.

In the first week of june, we saw him performing in front of the restaurant. He was so cute.
Sadly it was the only time, we saw him and little one was so disappointed because Remy was not there the next time we passed the restaurant.
So every time we passed the restaurant she asked: Where is the mousy?

Is there scheduled times he visits? I would love to eat here but would be disapointed if we didnt get to see him.

Are you able to stroke him?

Yes! They're on the back of the Programme under eat 'n' greets.

I don't see why you couldn't stroke him, but it might depend on his accompanier...

They have some times shown in the program (here (//http://fr.disneylandparis.com/COM/FR/Neutral/Images/ShowsAndParades.pdf))

These are the current times:
11:30 - 12:00, 13:15 - 13:45, 14:15 - 14:45, 15:15 - 15:45

I'm hoping to eat there one day during my next visit, just to see the little chef!
