Title: Google Earth 3D Disneyland Paris
Post by: britincgn on May 20, 2008, 11:18:07 AM
Disney Parks and Resorts is working on a joint venture with Google Earth to provide virtual tours of its Walt Disney World theme parks and 22 Disney resort hotels.

An article by USA Today's Kitty Bean Yancy details how Disney and Google are working together to bring the Disney parks and resorts to computer desktops around the world.  Utilizing Google's 3-D technology, visitors to the site will be able to take virtual tours of everything from theme park attractions to restaurants to hotel guest rooms.

"It's a virtual walk-through of the whole property ... the most amazing virtual tour of any place in the world," Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chairman Jay Rasulo says.

While Google Earth offers a growing number of 3-D images and gives bird's-eye views of theme parks, with links to information about them, the Disney project is the most ambitious and detailed 3-D production yet. It's "truly innovative and unique," says Google Earth maps director John Hanke.

According to USA Today, a team of eight photographers spent ten days at Walt Disney World.  The photos they captured were converted into 3D virtual tours of their subjects.  The virtual features will be combined with other on-line technologies which will enable site visitors to stream videos and even make reservations as they browse the site.

The features will debut later this month at http://www.disneyworld.com/3dparks (http://www.disneyworld.com/3dparks)" target="_blank and Google Earth.

Plans call for similar tours of Disneyland Paris to be produced.

This seems like a great idea

I heard about this a few days ago. Sounds really cool to me, though I do hope it's not too realistic or there'll be no point in going to Disney parks anymore.

I'd really like to see this take off,  being able to get a virtual tour from your arm chair would be brilliant.

I was really surprised to read that DLRP would be getting these, right after the US resorts. It feels like we're part of the Disney club again, rather than some unwanted outsider.

Considering how beautiful and colourful DLRP looks on Google Earth, it's a really good thing to draw people to it while they're deciding whether or not to go. Hopefully a few WDS landmarks like ToT won't be forgotten.

does this mean dlrp will then be up to date on google earth as the last time i looked it was still quite a while ago?

I'd really like to see DLRP on Google Earth as a 3D tour. I was taking a look at the 3d view of WDW today and it's incredibly well done. Each individual hotel has been expertly replicated, and even the monorail has been done in high detail.

I cant get it to work....

I have down loaded Google Earth, and gone to Disney World, but cant find the Mickey ears to load the 3d section? Any ideas?

They weren't there for me, either. Check the '3D Buildings' option at the bottom left, then zoom in as far as possible.

It's a bit of a resource hog; my computer is by no means slow since I use it a lot for gaming, but this still slowed it right down, especially when close up to several buildings at once.

I had a look at this about an hour ago. It really is brilliant. There's one big problem for me though - It makes my computer shut down unexpectedly. :( So I won't be able to look at it again until I get my computer fixed.

Aloha,

did anyone see Alain Littaye's new blog entry from today? It's here ... (//http://disneyandmore.blogspot.com/2009/01/all-disneyland-resort-paris-in-3d-on.html) and as rumours already said in the past it now should be available on Google Earth on March 28.

Have fun ;)

DLRP will be a much bigger challenge than WDW, because of the more complex landscaping and architecture.

I cannot wait for this to be finished!

I can't wait to see that! I am sure that in the future, people will be walking around DLRP with their phones, using Google Maps/Earth and walking through the park before they walk. It will be like sat nav for DLRP!

The Envie de+ article actually features the first images of the 3D recreation:

Source (//http://www.dlrptoday.com/2009/01/13/first-images-of-google-earth-3d-resort-released/)

They look brilliant. So realistic, despite the models actually being very simple.

:D I thought someone might have already used Google Earth around the park.

Maybe Disney will latch onto the idea and produce a branded version of Google Earth that you can use a Disney Sat Nav! They could even get it to work the Bluetooth technology they have been using in the Studios to add waiting times, meet and greets, parades and so on. Could be very interesting!

They look brilliant, I especially like the spiral of pixie dust twirling around the castle, a very clever idea. I've got high prospects for this now, I can't wait to see the finished product

Quote from: "DLRP Today"The magazine quotes http://www.disneylandparis.fr/googleearth3d (http://www.disneylandparis.fr/googleearth3d), which brings up a page error.

However, the actual address, as confirmed in the footer of the official text we've got hold of, should be /googleearth3D, with a capital 'D' in 3D. You can therefore already view the page in French here (//http://www.disneylandparis.fr/googleearth3D/index.xhtml) or English here (//http://www.disneylandparis.co.uk/googleearth3D/index.xhtml).
This is part of the article on DLRP Today (http://www.dlrptoday.com/2009/01/15/850 ... gic-in-3d/ (http://www.dlrptoday.com/2009/01/15/85000-pictures-to-make-the-magic-in-3d/)). With regards to the links, I can get the first, supposedly incorrect link to work, but not the other two. Is it just me or is it the same for anyone else?

85,000 pictures is such a huge amount of effort! Disney must see potential in all this.

Must have changed since the article was written... !

The correct address is http://www.disneylandparis.co.uk/googleearth3d (http://www.disneylandparis.co.uk/googleearth3d) then. :)

It'll be interesting to see how (or if) they do the information pop-ups like WDW has, since for WDW they seem to be connected right into the resort's attraction pages themselves. I'm not sure that DLRP's website is that advanced. We'll see...

I must say, it was well worth the wait!

My computer may hate the fact that every tree has been replicated, but I like it.

The amount of detail explains why it took so long for it to come online.
There is definitely more detail on our verson, my computer happily navigated through the Magic Kindgom but is seriously struggling with Disneyland Park.

I love how they have different characters dotted around the park. (e.g. Mickey in the castle and Snow White on the castle stage)

Definitely a job well done!

Seriously amazing. Ridiculously detailed.

This is going to take hours of my life!

Only immediate criticism is that the attractions don't seem to be highlighted like they are on the WDW version, where you can click them to get info and a link to the official page. As suspected before, it looks like disneylandparis.com is just too old-fashioned/bad/useless for that. Without that though, it's really only something for fans.

I'll post some more pictures later, for anyone whose computer might explode if they try to load it.

That is because in Pirates the attraction "is" in that show building, and at Phantom Manor, the story takes place in the main building and the show building is actually not there to see from anywhere in the park. except from out of the railroad when leaving Main Street station in winter.

My earlier criticism is gone, and in fact I think these are even better than Walt Disney World's. You can navigate directly to the main attractions and see a quick video for each. Quite a nice design too.

As well as Buffalo Trading Co and the old STT route being on there, they also used "Disneyland Resort Paris". Hopefully it'll get updates every year or so as the parks change?

This is really very good - so much better and more detailed than the WDW one! The parks look so colourful - even WDS. I love the way they even did some of the backstage areas not viewable by guests.

Annoyingly though I keep getting an error message that Google Earth needs to close after a few minutes on it.

Press release:

QuoteDISNEYLAND PARIS lands on Google Earth:
The next best thing to being there

Disneyland Paris in 3D takes vacation planning to new heights

Marne la Vallée, France, May 25th, 2009 -- Disneyland Paris is harnessing the power of Google Earth to build an interactive, three-dimensional tour of the Marne la Vallee-based resort destination that brings you one step closer to a true park experience. With direct links to Disney's online travel-planning tools, Disneyland Paris in 3D will re-invent how people plan and book vacations.
Following the successful launch of Google Earth for Walt Disney World Resort last summer, Disneyland Paris will be the first European Theme Park to be featured on the platform.

Beginning on May 25th and as part of Mickey's Magical Party--a year-long celebration of everyone's favorite Mouse--Disneyland Paris guests can use Google Earth, a program which offers a 3D digital model of the world, to virtually tour Disneyland Paris' two theme parks, its 7 hotels and Disney Village Entertainment Complex.

"This partnership marks the first of many technology initiatives that will enable our guests to plan for and maximize their time while vacationing at Disneyland Paris" said Philippe Gas, President and C.E.O. of Disneyland Paris. "Guests and travel planners can now explore our world with just a few clicks of a mouse, and they can book vacations while being immersed in what the destination has to offer."

"I have seen many amazing 3D models in Google Earth, but when I saw the new Disneyland Paris, I was blown away by how realistic it is. Disney's artists have really outdone themselves. They have taken virtual tourism to a new dimension and are leading the way for photo-realistic 3D models in Google Earth." said Brian McClendon, Engineering Director, Google Maps, Google Earth, and Sketchup.

The depth and vivid detail of Disneyland Paris in 3D project makes this a unique, truly

immersive experience within Google Earth. Visitors begin their virtual tour of the Resort

with a stratospheric view of the globe, a starting point familiar to anyone who has ever used Google Earth. A skydive takes visitors past the French countryside to a view of Sleeping Beauty Castle at the heart of the Disneyland Park. Guests can then fly through the streets of The Walt Disney Studios, the entertainment offerings of Disney Village and around each of the seven hotels and back Main Street, U.S.A..

An overview of Disneyland Paris in 3D, along with instructions on how to get started, can be found at www.disneylandparis.co.uk/googleearth3d (http://www.disneylandparis.co.uk/googleearth3d). You can explore Disneyland Paris in 3D by enabling "3D buildings" in the "layers" panel within Google Earth and searching "Disneyland Paris" in the "Fly to" bar.  The most current version of Google Earth is required to see Disneyland Paris in 3D. Existing Google Earth users can check they have the latest version of the application by selecting "Help > Check for updates online".

In order to bring the magic of the Resort and Google Earth together in 3D, two photographers worked for 20 days to shoot all the visible surfaces of Disneyland Paris, including every building façade. A total of 85,000 photos were taken in all which became the start for some 1,587 3D models that populate the virtual tour. Disneyland Paris 3D creates a new level of usability for vacation planners and makes detailed information about one of the world's foremost destinations available to Google Earth's 400 million users, furthering the Google Earth team's goal of recreating the world as it really is.

Google have mentioned the new 3D DLP in their latest The Sightseer:

QuoteDisneyland® Resort Paris in 3D

3D Disneyland Resort Paris in Google Earth Speaking of 3D buildings, make sure you check out Disneyland Resort Paris in Google Earth! Disney has modeled nearly every detail of this park including the rides, Disney castle, buildings, trees, signs, tables, and even Mickey Mouse! More than 85,000 photos (450GB worth) were taken over a 20 day period for this project. The castle alone is comprised of over 354 textures derived from over 2,000 photos. There is also a Google Earth layer with placemarks that help guide you through the amazing Disneyland Paris complex. Make sure to turn on the 3D Buildings layer to see the models when you fly there in Google Earth. Read more, or you can watch a Disney video introduction. There is also a layer with placemarks to the main attractions under "Gallery->Travel and Tourism->Disneyland Resort Paris", which will help guide you around the park.

The MacBook I tested it on had a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA 9400M graphics chipset, running at 1280 x 800 pixels. The animation wasn't smooth at all. Then again, it all depends how you define smooth. Some people can't see/detect low frame rates. But I'd say that it wasn't smooth until you really zoomed in on certain buildings. Zoomed out, showing the entire park, it was jerky.

I won't fan the flames by mentioning my laptop...

It's a shame for Disneyland Park that it was captured during Halloween, complete with orange splats and pumpkinmen on Main Street. For some reason I was thinking they didn't trash it last year.

Tower of Terror looks truly awesome though, they caught it in a fantastic light:

Not at all! If anything, it's the other way around. Street View only offers a limited perspective (for example, you can't get into Frontierland or Fantasyland in the Street View) while the 3D lets you see everything from every angle.

But the street view does serve a purpose of not nearly melting your floor/desk/lap/hand.

Of course, now (post June 2009) all of the unibody MacBooks are known as MacBook Pros.

Sorry, I'm not sure what a graphics chipset is. It's the newest model, and the middle one, with a 15-inch screen. The one that's a million times faster than my old, medieval, torturous PowerBook, the one that soars through Disneyland Paris on Google Earth.

It's really surprising, though, even my brother's iMac (also rather new) could only barely handle it. I'm no computer wizard, really, but perhaps there are other factors that could contribute to it being slow? Like a chock-full hard drive?
