can anyone give me any tips on starting pin trading?
which ones are the best pins to buy?
which are rare?
how do you "trade"?
A load of good questions here.
It depends what your collecting for. As in are you a stitch fan? or princesses. Rides, Hotels.
When I started about 5 years ago. I bought like crazy via ebay, but got carried away. I started with the pokemon theory of "gotta get them all". I bit off more than I could chew.
I have found that the Limited Edition ones are quite hard to find in the Theme parks.
I also bought a book witch had all the pins released listed, each pin was rated in terms of value A - E.
So my advice would be focus on a colletcion. Rides or attractions may be fun.

In ebay I typed in "Disney Pin", "Disney Pins" and also the same but spelt Dinsey!
thanks for the reply!
QuoteI also bought a book witch had all the pins released listed, each pin was rated in terms of value A - E
any ideas where i could find this book? is it available in Disneyland?
thanks for the advice

there a link to the latest version of teh book I'm referring to.
BUT
If you after a good read I think there is only about 70 words in it, it's mainly photos and values.
thank you

:) This website is really great. They have all available Disney pins on that site, and there's info about each one. Using the search function, you can search for pins featuring characters that you like. :P For example, before I go to WDW this April, I'll be looking up WDW Cheshire Cat pins.
:o My tips for starting Pin Trading are as follows;
1. Get a starter lanyard. They usually include four pins, two of each design, meaning you can trade away two and keep two if you like. The lanyard is what you display your pins on.
2. Buy cheap pins for trading. Everytime I've been to DLRP, there's been pins in the sale for 3 Euros. It's worth buying a bunch of these for trading, rather than buying any at 6 Euros and above.
3. Don't go crazy. Like Alpop, as soon as I got back from the trip where I started pin trading, I jumped on eBay and started buying all sorts of pins. Now, I only buy pins on eBay that are (a) limited edition and/or (b) featuring one of my all-time fave Disney characters.
4. Only trade for pins you like. There's not much point in trying to trade for pins that you think are rare, or you think will be worth money someday. If you just stick to pins of characters/things you like, you can't go wrong.
:P If I can think of any other tips, I'll add them.
I have two limited editions on eBay, both from Walt Disney World:
http://search.benl.ebay.be/_W0QQsassZjovada2000 (http://search.benl.ebay.be/_W0QQsassZjovada2000)
There's only one day left and the current price is still € 1... If you're interested...
I'm also thinking about starting pin trading. I was wondering, do you just approach someone in the park and ask if they'd like to trade? or is there only certain places or people you can trade at/with?

I collect pins! I don't really have a particular choice in them, all I know is, if I like it, I buy it!
I have a limited addition 15th anniversary one! I have a particular fondness for Minnie mouse pins, tinkerbell and WTP pins, but thats just me!

Yes, my daughter Jen collects pins. It started with the Princesses, as to be expected with Jen, then onto Minnie, then Mickey. I added to her collection with Donald Duck, the Park Zones and some of the attractions etc. Then it sort of got in mixed areas after that. Take a look

WOW! Thats loads compared to mine!
I have the first and second ones in your collection though!
*gasps* The 64th in your collection is my FAVOURITE! Minnie mouse dressed as tinkerbell! I have that pin! Its my prized possession! Well, when it comes to pins...
I got 73 (princess trio) for christmas! I got 91 (snow white and prince) for christmas 2005, and like I said before, I have the 1st and 2nd in your collection too... You have 107! I only have *counts* 13! Wow... doesn't make me sound like much of a collector!
Don't worry MinniesBestPal :D
It takes time, these took some solid buying over 4 visits out of the 5 times we have been there. Since the first year we went we hadn't started collecting them, not knowing anything about Pin Trading at all :)
Everything starts from a small seed MinniesBestPal, unfortunatley I haven't caught onto pins, I have 5 Tink ones on my dancing bag (only got them cos I liked them, although I LOVE my pink pirate Tink) and a Pink Jeweled Crown and the word Princess with jewels on for my work pass.

Mmm I'd be interested to see a few photies of these if possible. :)
I saw the pink pirate Tink one in Disneyland in December!
not the best photo but...

Yeah they look familiar now.
Saying that I've never seen the Tinkerbell Disneyland Resort Paris one mind
Thanks for sharing Disney_Princess :D
Thats the first one I bought because, believe it or not, I'd never seen a Tinkerbell DLRP one, so I had to have it.
Like I say, they just sit on my dance bag, I collect too much stuff without pins to add to it lol.
I collect pins and Minnie Mouse plushies!
So far, my Minnie Mouse Plushie collection has a grand total of...*drum roll*....2 MINNIE MOUSE PLUSHIES!
Yeah, thats kind of a new thing I'm collecting!

Which ones :?: Any like our Jen has.. http://public.fotki.com/DisneyDavid/disneymerchandise/ (http://public.fotki.com/DisneyDavid/disneymerchandise/) :)
Yeah, I have number three (I love purple!) and I have the newest one of her in her pink dress with gold stars and clouds (from the dream parade! My favourite parade!)
*gets jealous*
What a collection! I love Minnie Mouse plushies! I always go into the toy shops in disneyland and in the disney store those are the first things I look at!
on my first trip to disneyland the only thing I wanted was a minnie mouse, ended up getting the biggest one you ever seen! lol it wouldn't fit into my suitcase :-(
When I first went to DLRP for my 21st B'day I said right at the begining... "I'm not going to buy any pins 'cause it will only start an obsession..." By the end of the 4th day of the trip I'd bought 16 pins... :P
I took my Mum this January and she's since gone nuts on ebay too. She sticks to the jumbo ones which catch her eye. I'm LOVE anything with Stitch, Cheshire Cat, Jiminy Cricket, Tinkerbell, Ariel, Lady and the Tramp and butterflies.
There's prob a few more that I could add to that list. So I guess as a rule of thumb it's just anything that catches my eye!

We said that too, but ended up buying a fair few, only from dlrp, we are sworn off ebay for the time being
Hehe! Me too! I'm trying to be so good! Need all the pennies I can save!
Ah, once you start...
I'm not much of a collector, have only started buying pins in the last few visits, and (so far) have only bought one per visit (as a souvenir of the trip...)
I have a Tinkerbell (was my first one... I love Tink!), Minnie dressed as Leia (big Star Wars fan...), a Steamboat Willie Mickey (because I wanted a Mickey Mouse pin and that one looked so cute) and a Nightmare Before Christmas one with Jack and Sally (that was the last one I bought).
I have them pinned to my "disney" bag - it's a wonderful, perfect handbag that fits everything I need when I'm in DLRP... And has still plenty of space for more pins :D
I'm a terrible collector, my husband doesn't want me to get anything that could be the start of a new collection... so he wasn't too happy when I bought my first pin :P But at least, compared to some of my other collections, pins are small....
But so far I'm only buying pins that I like... I couldn't trade them!
tell me about it, really I needed to start saving about 10 years ago lol
on our last trip we bought so much ...
clothes
jackets
hoodies (15th anniversary)
pins
glasses
art
photo albums
plushes
15th anniversary wine (which we had to smuggle out of Walts, no take away rule lol)
too much to mention!!
I will post photos of the pins I got, but unfortunatly another shift at work awaits so I will have to drag myself away soon :-(
Booo... work always gets in the way. I saw in awesome t-shirt the other day. It said "Play now, work later".
Maybe we should open a book on how many pins I'm going to buy this time round? :p
Does anyone know where I can get the actual codes for the pins, since when I first started collecting them, I threw the plastic cards they came on away. :(
I'm now wishing I didn't, since I want to start and catalogue them..

We couldn't resist this! it was the last one in the park still in its wrapper!

We got three of these free (one with my mums prezzie, its a small world character) and two with CowenJ's watch. Do you have to spend so much to get one of these?

+ Ride/hotel/show ones we have to have seen or been on (I'll never have an Indie one lol)

No I'm too scared to do that, its confusing! different coloured lanyards for children etc or so I've heard? I just buy mine, maybe I'm missing out on some fun?

Just go up to the cast members and majority do not care about the kids and adult ones. You always get one or two CM's that won't trade even with my daughter because she is over 10. It is great trading with the CM's as they sometimes have some special pins what you can't buy. My daughter and I have traded since 2002 and it's great. The best place to trade is in the Hotels as the dealers can't get into the hotels.
I have a pink lanyard with crowns on (I got it from Orlando)
My brother had a blue one with Mickey's Sorceror hat on, but he lost it when we came back. We went again at Christmas, and he re started his collection, with a longer lanyard. It isblack and has "Disneyland Resort Paris" written in silver all the way down it.
Anyway, the other day he was tidying out his toybox, and he found his blue lanyard. He put the 3 pins from Florida onto his black lanyard.
He gave me the blue one! YAY! I haven't got any pins to put on it right now, but my pink one is running out of room!
My cousin has the prettiest lanyard though. She has a purple one with stars all over it. Purple is my favourite colour, and I love hers. Its covered in Tinkerbell pins too. I think it is a bit boring, only collecting Tink pins, but its her choice, and it does look really nice!
But how do you trade them?
I mean, where do I find castmembers who trade? How do I get the attraction ones? Do I have to ride the specific attraction? I'd love to start collecting as well but have no idea where to start?! I'd love to buy some on eBay to bring on my july trip.
Quote from: SimbaBut how do you trade them?

How do I get the attraction ones?
You can buy anytype of pin at any of the shops that sell them, sometimes there are area specific ie diffenent ones available in studios to disneyland, different lands and hotels.
Do I have to ride the specific attraction?NO, but sometimes the ride might have a limited ed, which is only available in certain shops
I'd love to start collecting as well but have no idea where to start?! I'd love to buy some on eBay to bring on my july trip.
You can get starter lanyeards with about 8 pins on, that you can trade for others[/color]
Thanks Clarebelle! Just what I needed to know!
Can CM's refuse to trade? Is it up to me what pins I want or what?
Last time I was at dlrp I couldn't get my eyes off the pins but thought it might be too expensive to start collecting. How much does standard pins cost?
Thanks for all your help!

CM's as a rule cant refuse you, although some might try to barter with you, and yes you can choose. some cast members only trade with children, but they have different coloured lanyards on.
the average pin costs around 8 euros 50 cents, special editions and multi pane cost more, depending on how rare they are, if you look back in this topic I psted piccies of mine along with the cost, so you can get an idea of what costs what etc
