Title: River Rogue Keelboats returning
Post by: Kristof on June 14, 2007, 11:44:04 AM
Exciting news comes from La Roquine on Disney Central Plaza:

The keelboats are returning by the end of this month or early July!  Problem this time wasn't budget cuts, but a change of rules by the goverment.  It turned out that the CM's needed to have a licence for operating a boat.  DLRP got exclusive permission by the regulators for training them on property.

I saw a crew getting trained with a regular boat on Lake Disney last week, which explains the above.

Wow, amazing huh!  I'm so excited, I've never been on the Keelboats...

 :D

For the newbies who don't know what the River Rogue Keelboats are, here's a link to the Photos Magiques album (//http://www.photosmagiques.com/gallery/river_keelboats).

Edit: Decided to split the topic from the original one (which can be found here (//http://www.photosmagiques.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=639&highlight=keelboats)).

Is it going to be seasonal though? I'd love to go on them in October.

Yahooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!  Though I might still need to wait until I see them with my own eyes carrying guests to believe it...

This is some of the best news we've had in months!  It's the final encore of Karl Holz' turnaround of the resort - every month, every week DLRP is getting better and better these days.  Seriously, can we say he's the best CEO the resort has ever had now?  He certainly has an amazing team around him, wanting to do things like this.

Reopening an attraction that costs a lot to run and doesn't even have a very high capacity, simply for guest satisfaction... is this still Disney? :P

It might also say something about their attendance this Summer - do they need more capacity at Disneyland Park now?  Interesting...

I rode them a number of times through the 90's, last time being 1999. They were slow loading, and had small numbers of guests, but they were cool because the spiel was given by the cast members rather than a recording.  They travelled between the islands including the rapids (that could be even better felt in the canoes) and through the rock arch.  The journey could be really dull or a lot of fun.  It was always down to the cast members and the guests on board.  But that's what made it cool.

I used to ride them all the time in US parks too, where it really was like a western version of the jungle cruise.

Oooh maybe not.  I'm guessing they'll run July and August, but if they continue beyond that will depend on how successful they are.  October could be a strong possibility though, since it's so busy these days and the centre of Halloween.

I guess we'll have to wait and see...

Where are the Keel boats located? We were on the Mark Twain yesterday and saw someone working on a Brown Boat with the name Coyote on it. I couldn't see where you would go to get on one of those boats and would it be able to run with The Mark twain in the water also?

The loading dock is at #6, and they're controlled totally by Cast Members, so they can dodge the riverboats and go further into and around the islands/rocks of the Rivers of the Far West. :)

I wonder with the Keelboats open and Pocahontas Indian Village operating, would they consider reopening the Pueblo Trading Post shop?  It can easily be used as a cold drinks stand.

:o We saw the brown boat named Coyote whilst we were riding the train on Thursday.

i was thinking that too as it would add too the area and like you said raptor would be great as a cold drink stand after playing in the village or sailing on the kealboats

Doubt it, I expect a queue of 120 minutes, if crush can get 2 hours, cars 1 hour, yep definately can see 2 hour queues for the keelboats, after all to normal guests they are a new attraction  .

Hm keeping this in mind I´m also not sure. 120 minutes can be true cause the capacity of the attraction isn´t very high. How much boats have they?

By the way; can someone please tell me the storyline behind the Keelboats? It has something to do with smugglers right?

Didier Ghez's bible reveals:

Quote from: "From Sketch to Reality"Our adventurous spirit leads us to board one of the two River Rogue Keelboats - named Raccoon and Coyote - the smuggler's boats inspired by the 1955 film Davy Crocket and the River Pirates.  The boats departs from Smuggler's Cove, a hideout for river pirates.  The voyage is relatively peaceful and we even have time to wave Old Joe, who is fishing not far from the picturesque surroundings of Wilderness Island.

Thanks for your response! I would never have thought that there was a storyline and such a strong link to the Davy Crocket films. It proves once again that Frontierland is a true gem of Imagineering.

It should - though nothing can be confirmed... Disney wants to have them running as often as possible and the next batch of CMs will make its boat license shortly... or so I've heared.
