Title: DLRP vs. WDW - What are the differences?
Post by: skalos on May 26, 2007, 12:23:21 AM
Hello everybody,

I m visiting Paris in 16 days with a friend of mine... We are mostly in Paris to visit DLRP since we both been to Paris a couple of times...

The thing is that my friend is Greek/American and he has been to WDW a lot of times... So the idea for this trip started from the classic conversation "WDW is the real thing!". I have never been to WDW (I'm hoping one day...) and this is my friends first time to DLRP...

I just want to have my facts correct... So which attractions are only in WDW (I'm talking only for the magic kingdom) and which are slightly different in DLRP?

To be fair, WDW is not the real thing, because Disneyland came first.

Space Mountain is a lot different to the one in WDW, the one at DLRP goes upside down and is much more of a thrill ride.

Thats the only difference i can think of right now, obviously there will be a few rides the same and a few different. One of the big differences between WDW and DLRP is that WDW is a lot bigger park wise, DLRP only has Disneyland and the Studios.  :)

Well there are some rides specific for each park, and other that exist on both but are better in one or the other.

First, Magic Kingdom has more rides than DLRP. But those that exist in both park usually are better in Paris, like POTC or It's a Small World.
Haunted mansion is the name given to Phantom Manor in WDW and once again it's better the Paris version. Space Mountain as said before is completely different in Paris and in my opinion better with loops and inversions.

As for unice rides, MK has Mickey's Philharmagic which is a great 3D ride that doesn't exist in Paris. Also it has Splash mountain, mickey's toontown fair, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

As for DLRP it has Alice's Curious Labyrinth, the Indiana Jones coaster.

There are also some rides that appear in Disneyland Park that exists in WDW but not in the Magic Kingdom, like Star Tours.

skalos, this topic (//http://www.photosmagiques.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1653) might be useful for you.

The attractions at Magic Kingdom you won't find in Disneyland Park Paris are:

- Splash Mountain
- Jungle Cruise
- The Hall of Presidents
- Tom Sawyer Island
- Stitch's Great Escape
- Mickey's PhilharMagic
- Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor
- Country Bear Jamboree
- The Enchanted Tiki Room
- Magic Carpets of Aladdin (Paris' is at the Studios)
- The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
- The entire Mickey's Toon Town Fair

At DLP but not at MK are:

- Alice's Curious Labyrinth
- Casey Jr
- Storybookland Canal Boats
- Star Tours (WDW's is at the Studios)
- Honey I Shrunk the Audience (WDW's is at Epcot)
- Phantom Manor (quite different version of Haunted Mansion)
- Parts of Frontierland
- Adventure Isle & Bazaar
- Indy
- Pinocchio
- Main Street Arcades

I think I got em all...

yup thats them all, WDW is obviosally more expensive (flights etc) But tickets are realy quite good value for money as you have like 4 theme parks 2 water parks and most people take 2 weeks to go there and that is plenty of time

DLP also has a special surprise underneath the castle which you should really check out. And a wonderful (well, I think it is) '20,000 Leagues Under The Sea' walkthrough in Discoveryland.
Oh, and Big Thunder Mountain is also a much wilder ride than the Magic Kingdom one.

Also DLRP seems much more detailed to WDW's MK.
(below not related to Disneyland Park, but to the resort)
Also the day you go (10th if i done my maths right) is the day after 2 new attractions open at the studios.

On the 9th June Crush coaster and Cars Race rally opens

DLRP feels more magical  I also think most of the rides at DLRP are better quality than the WDW ones.

Disneyland in California was the first original park, the one Walt built!  I have been to Disneyland in CA and WDW in FL, you can't compare the parks! Walt built CA as a place to take his children on the weekend to have something to do.  WDW was supposed to be a City of tomorrow, but when Walt died and Roy took over he decided that it would be better to create another Magic Kingdom, and over the years the company has added the other parks and more attractions.  They are, I'm hoping all unique in their own ways.  Which is the reason I would some day love to have visited all 5 parks around the world!!  So if you ever have an opportunity go to all the parks no matter where they are!  I still love WDW and could go back there several times a year, but the budget won't allow that.  I would love to go back to DL Calif again, it was wonderful!  We head to DL Paris in July and I can't wait, it will be 2 Disney parks in a span of 3 months!!

The more I hear about WDW the more I think it would probably be a big disappointment to me after DLRP.

I'v been to WDW and DLRP, i went to DLRP first but i was very young and don't remember much of it so iv grown up going to WDW and im not really keen on the main park MK, the rides are a bit of a dissapointment (except for Splash Mountain  :P ) but i love all the other parks and also there are the Universal parks to visit which are amazing Islands of Adventure is by far my favourite park, even better than Disney!  :D

So, i have to say that from my personal experience that i prefare DLRP's Disneyland to WDW's Magic Kingdom, but what the MK lacks makes up for it in its other parks.

Walt Disney World was like the holy grail for me (OK, so growing up I didn't really differentiate between WDW and DL).  Finally went there in 2004 after several visits to DLRP.

Now obviously there's more to do at WDW but you know what? Even though I had an amazing time I still found myself missing my "little" park in France - the theming is so wonderful, the castle is the most beautiful and where the rides were the "same" I preferred the ones in France - not that you can compare the Space Mountains at all of course.

Dark_Prince, I don't think you'd find it a disappointment - there's so much to do afterall - but at the same time I don't think it would spoil DLRP for you, which is probably the most important thing!

If anyone's interested, I did a trip report at the time for another website which I've now copied over to my livejournal. I make a few comparisons between the parks so if you're feeling really bored one day, feel free to have a read (as you can tell from the links, it's in three parts and is pretty long!)

See for me, my main reason for visiting DLRP is the Disneyland Park. I absolutely love Disneyland, and I spend most of my time in there. WDS gives a bit of a distraction when you need it, but I always spend the best part of everyday in Disneyland.

From what I've heard, the theming isn't as good in WDW, and aside from the attraction of perhaps, Animal Kingdom and Epcot, I don't think I'd be that bothered with WDW.

I don't particularly like flying, and I like the fact that I can make my own way to DLRP at my own pace by driving and ferry.

All of the attractions I really want are at DLRP, and the price suits me much more, so I'm quite happy really with the park we've got. What does always annoy me is the view many have that it isn't the proper Disney. Well if you're going to be technical, neither is WDW - it's not the original. DLRP is just as much a proper Disney park as any of the others, and I'm sure they all have their advantages and disadvantages, and perhaps people should concentrate more on which Disney park suits themselves, rather than trying to knock different ones down.

WDW is amazing.  It is much bigger that DLRP, the added bonus of Animal Kingdom, Epcot, Downtown Disney, Pleasure Island and the Studios is bigger and better.  Everything Disney, so I feel you can have a longer break in America and do the Disney bit too which is fantastic.  We have been to Paris for the last couple of years and haven't seen fireworks, I saw them everynight in WDW.  It is great to see fireworks and is amazing to see the sky full of colours over the Cinderellas Castle.  I feel the fireworks is a Disney Experience which nobody should miss out in.  America is really a hotter, more expensive, busy holiday compared to Paris which is relaxed, less busy and not too unbearable hot to walk about in.  Both have pros and cons.  Saying that I am off to WDW next year - yipee!!

although I prefer Disneyland Park to Magic Kingdom, I prefer Disney MGM  studios to the Studios in Paris.  If there were only those two parks in Orlando then I'd say DLRP just edges it.

However, there's also Epcot which is brilliant, Animal Kingdom which is OK and the water parks which are amazing.  Their Village area is better than the one in Paris too.

But as long as you're in Orlando, there's also two Universal parks (which, as they're designed more for adults, I prefer to Disney (Spiderman ride and Men In Black are just amazing)), Universal City Walk (like Disney Village)Busch Gardens, Sea World, Kennedy Space Centre, Wet and Wild and loads of other small attractions dotted around the local area.

The weather is better, everyone speaks English as a first language and the shops are great.

Although DLRP is special to me, in my opinion it's just a starter to the main course of Orlando.

(Sorry!)

I totally agree with you there bikemonkey.  :) WDW in Orlando is a lot bigger and a lot better because it has many other parks and it has been open for longer and has had chance to grow and theres also the plus of the other parks such as the Universal parks and Busch Gardens ect.. And although WDW is branded by some people as the "real" Disney i do not agree with that.. I think that all Disney parks are equal and maybe some day or little DLRP will be as big as the one in Orlando, Although if it does get bigger i hope that they will still pay attention to all the little details as thats what makes our park special.  :D

The best or at least my most favorite thing at WDW is getting to see/meet all the princesses in Epcot.

I can't say I really prefer one over the other but being from the states I would have to say I am more partial to the FL one just because of being able to understand the language and it is waaaay cheaper in the states compared to the Euro. It is so bad against the American Dollar. We had actually planned to go in May but I cancelled the trip because the rate is so bad for us. I need my Disney fix again though so we are going back in June. I couldn't wait till July for our son's B-day. That is something special in FL. You get a B-day/anniversary pin and every CM who sees you says something and we even got on some rides in the FP lane without having FP's! My favorite memory was when Captain hook pulled me out of a line of people waiting to see him and made the whole line & everyone sing Happy Birthday when he saw my pin.

(I struggle so much too with my French & German here and even when I try to use what I know it sounds wrong and people are not always nice about it. It's hard and sometimes lonely being in an area where so many people dislike Americans. I always try to make people feel comfortable where ever they are from. Too many bad apples give us a bad name I guess)

I love being only 3.5 hours from DLP here so we can go more often. We were 6 hours away by car in the states and I do not like heat so it is much cooler here :)

I know this may sound strange but,

when you look at the other park facts and figures (rides and attraction not finance) it seems like DLRP is being "overtaken" by the other disney resorts because all the other resorts apart from HK has more than 2 or more parks and HK is planning to expand. but soon it will be like DLP is the little disney resort that other people outside western europe will not want to visit and surely that will damage the reputation of the great disney resort dlrp.

also most of the other disney theme parks are bigger dlp having 8 lands and Disney land parc having only 5. :(

Its funny I mentioned this in my last entry in the blog a few days ago as we came out of DL Anaheim. The problem with Florids MK is a lot of things were rushed in quickly and are basically edited half rides, POTC is a disgrace and even though SM is similar to Californias its still a cheaper version. Its also in some areas an ugly park (Fantasyland) However it has some nice areas and some fantastic atractions that are unique such as Philharmagic. What makes Florida so special of course is the whole WDW and the choice that gives you as an entire resort.

i would note that the ride that is missing at DLRP is soarin

WDW is so spread out that its one park per day it takes 1-2 hrs to get inbetween parks
animal kingdom and the studios are both in need of another E ticket ride
epcot is a single day ...

SDont understand why this is considered an E tkt ride at all. In Florida its theming is non existent and the state of the film is now scratched and dirty. In California we have thenming and it appered 2 weeks ago a new print of the film, however once ridden once I find its a bit of a doze..

Jaxx,
Interesting post with regards to 1-2 hours to get between parks. My last visit three years ago in september we did 3 parks in a day, we picked the things we wanted to do and see i might add.
The magic kingdom and epcot are linked by the monorail,as you know, two hours max?,maybe in high season.Epcot and the studios are next to each other too and you can get ther via boat.

I agree in your statement about the studios, i think animal kingdom needs a couple of C and D ticket rides first :D

we went  to Orlando last june it had been 20 years to the month from the last time i had been
the times between parks was an estimate that came from the "unofficial guide to WDW" book
its AMAZING to me that the monorail doesn't connect MGM and AK to the rest of the park

i would do it very differently IF i ever go back to Florida
stay on property!! the extra magic hours make a HUGE difference definitely worth the extra $
go for the extra hours in the morning
leave at 11:00
do what ever for 6-7 hrs
return and close the place down
mid day in june was insane

we are headed to dlrp june 23/24 next year .. although we probably shouldn't the $ is incredably weak

soarin is an awesome ride
DL and WDW ques are different but the ride is identical after you sit down
i wonder if they would change it for DLRP

Hello.

Having worked at DLRP and having recently come back from WDW, there are quite a few differences.
I used to work on Space Mountain in DLRP before the renovations and that for me remains much better than the american one. you go through a Barrel Roll and a HairPin Loop (I think that's the neame for it).
The one in WDW is more like the Black Hole in Alton Towers (if you have ever been there)

WDW doen't have Indiana Jones ride.

DLRP does not yet have Splash Mountain, but there are designs for it and should get it (as soon as possible I hope).

These are some of the big differences, however, WDW has more family orientated rides such as the Whinnie the Pooh Rides and Stitch's Great Escape.

I hope this helps. I think there may be some otherones but this is what I can think of off the top of my head.

Enjoy yourself. I know you will.   8)

We stay at both parks but I love DLRP most.

The Magic Kingdom (including the Castle) is so much nicer in Paris than in Orlando. Sure, WDW is much bigger but I think, your friend will enjoy DLRP aswell :-)

I forgot the reason I started this topic...  :P

Our trip to DLRP the summer was great (as always)! We had a magical time...

Anyway... the guy that I went to Disneyland now lives in Orlando... But he misses DLRP... I told him that I m going to paris in February and he got really jealous!  :D

The Magic kingdom is actually smaller in size than Disneyland Park in Paris. The european park is the biggest of the magic kingdom parks. But the Orlando park has more attractions. Because of this, one thing I noticed was that everything was much more packed there. And having more visitors, makes it more difficult to walk around the magic kingdom.

Interesting comments as Ive read through this topic.

Im must say I love DLP and WDW but for different reasons.  DLP was was first experience of the Disney magic and will always hold a special place in my heart.  WDW is just enormous with lots of my favourite rides scattered between the four parks (which I have visited in one day   )

POTC is much better at DLP as is SM, BTM is awesome and Its a small world is fab (In my opinion anyway).  The parades are not a scratch on WDW though and neither are the fireworks (use to love the Christmas ones).

Now if we can have Splash Mountain and Expedition Everest at DLP that would be the icing on the 'fairy' cake  :D

ps worth noting, I visit another forum which is dedicated to WDW and they think im nuts for loving DLP so much

We do want to go to WDW one day, but now that the tower is in Paris I can't get that excited at the thought of it and may not bother for a long time.

I also get the, "not as good as Florida" from people who haven't been to DLRP, I just smile and ignore the comment now.
