I think we got ours the same day, so we got our wristbands early in the day (despite being told the 'official' time to collect them was in the afternoon, we got them as soon as we entered the park in the morning- they were giving them out then - but that might have just been for that year and not something done every year).
And we were given a leaflet that stated who would be where and what times things were on (for example, Tiana or friends were on the Molly Brown for photos for a couple of hours, Stitch and Buzz were taking it in turn to DJ sets by Star Tours, Jack and Sally were down by Phantom Manor, etc etc).
Its a great evening, but it's VERY busy, so be prepared for that. We left the park in the afternoon and had a nap then got our costumes on (remember grown ups can dress up aswell but only for the evening soiree, its the one night of the year we can be characters too!), then we headed back to the parks. We saw the characters we wanted to see as early as possible, then danced until we couldn't dance any more by Star Tours. It was so nice being able to do that with the kids. Be aware if you have little ones there are usually CM's on light up stilts in sort of robotic/sci-fi looking costumes around Discoveryland (our youngest was a bit scared at first until one of them bent down to high 5 her and told her she was an awesome dancer- they could see she was a bit scared to start with, bless them).
