I can't remember if I ever saw the dragon below the castle breathe fire or not, can anyone confirm if that ever happened? I've seen it breathing "fake" fire in a publicity video, so I'm not sure if I'm remembering that and confusing it with fact.
I did read somewhere that it used to, but was stopped because they realized that if the animatronics ever failed and it continued to breathe fire, it could be directed at guests!
Hi I have never seen it breathe fire but do remember smoke in the dragons lair so there could well have been more effects than there is now.
It would make sense from a health and safety perspective not to have fire or smoke in that area, particularly with the steps and the fairly tight access.
Not sure about fire but did breathe smoke. Can't remember when that stopped.
I've definitely seen it breathe smoke but don't remember ever seeing fire, but I've only been visiting since 2013. x
I don't recall it ever breathing fire. As you mentioned the promo video, it was probably only ever done for that (and probably a post-effect).
I would think that its probably a bit to confined in there to be having regular pryro effects.
Like others, I've definitely seen her breathing smoke but not fire. I've not really paid enough attention to notice whether the smoke effect is still there - you would assume they would've fixed that last time it was closed if it was broken.
Never seen fire.
Thanks everyone, it must have seen the video with the fire effect that I was confusing with fact.
I think I read somewhere (maybe the From Concept to Reality book?) that at the very beginning it did breath fire, but it was turned off for safety concerns
I've never seen it breathing fire though...

TBF it's a small space to have something breathing fire. I'd be very surprised if it did.
I can confirm that the dragon did used to breathe fire for the first few years of opening , saw it several times on our visits.I emailed the imagineer directly who designed this animatronic to ask why they turned off the effect, the response was that if the animatronics failed and the dragon did not raise its head the fire would be in direct line with the guests! Too much of a risk to take of course, shame it was an amazing effect while it lasted!
