Title: Just how frightening is the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster?
Post by: RocketBabyDoll on April 09, 2007, 10:40:27 PM
Hi, I'm new here, so please excuse any dumbness.

I haven't been to DLRP for 9 years, but will be going in June. I really like how the RnRC is described and I'd really like to ride it, but I'm kinda scared actually. So could you please tell me how "horrible" it is? I'm not really frightened of inversions or corkscrews but mainly of high drops and curves.

Thank you :)

Well your in luck, this year when i went to DLRP. I went on Rock n Roller Coaster for the first time. I went on because i wanted to face my fears of that roller coaster as several times ive tried but never actually got on to the ride. The first time i was shaking through the queue and then we were asked to have the seats at the back and i felt even more scared. Then we emabarked and i was abit better, until the launch which scared me but after that i loved it i went on it 3 more times when your on the ride your ok but when you queueing you may start to get nervous.

I took my other half on this last november and you could feel the  nervousness, afterwards we went on it another 6 times at least during our stay. The only really scary bit is the launch. I found SPM2 more scary. Go on it its great fun

Went on this for the very first time in August. I am not a fan of roller coasters, but this was GREAT! Yes, I kept my eyes shut for some of it and sang at the top of my voice, but the experience was brilliant. I got off grinning and kept saying ot my better half-did I REALLY do that? And of course I had to buy the picture!

//http://tubbsfamily.co.uk/Disney%202006%20238.jpg

I apologise to the two nice gentlemen in front. I am sure my singing is worse than ANY coaster!

And I will go on again and try and keep my eyes open for longer this time! :P

I have a Rock n Roller Coaster site. The link is in my signature.

It has a picture of the track layout on the Info page and some videos if that's any help

I agree Smurfy, Space Mountain is much more worse than Rock n Roller coaster because Space Mountain tends to be more wild and throws you about.

Thank you very much, I think I will try it out then. And nice site, RnRCj, but the videos don't work for me. The track layout still looks scary though.

Great photo, tubbsy. Those two men in front of you are wearing glasses, so would you say it's safe to keep your glasses on during the ride?

Ah so it WASNT you RnRCj  I was torturing with my singing!

The funny thing was, I bumped into these two fellas at the Sequoia and they were on a table behind us having tea. I really wanted to apologise to them for being so pathetic, but I was too embarressed!

Its only a few minutes long RocketBabyDoll and afterwards you'll say "YEah! Lets do it again!" or "NEVER, EVER let me on that ride again!" But then at least you can say you were daft enough to do it!

Oh and the queue line is absolutely brilliant!

I saw a tv programme once that explained there really are two types of people who ride roller coasters.  The first may get scared but love the adrenaline.  The second lot are genuinely scared (something to do with the way their brains are wired...).   I am so terrified on roller coasters, well I say that, have only ever tried BTM and that scared me to death each time.  The family keep telling me I'd like space mountain but I'm not convinced.   :)

I love it, Space Mountain is the ride that scares me because it seems as if every time I'm on it - it breaks down. Now THAT is scary. Rock n' Rollercoaster is really smooth in comparison aswell!

It's horrible! I got really frightened cos I thought our train had broken down and perhaps the other train was gonna come up behind and smash into ours! I always think the worst in situations like that though!!!!!!!! x

Hehe - you really should read some more on basic rollercoaster design.  The chances you have two trains collapsing on a track really is about non-existing.  Basically, the tracks are divided into different sections (each section is usually bordered by either a break section, like on Indiana Jones, where you can easily see where these sections are, or by a lift hill).

A train is only allowed to "enter" the next section if the computer registered that the previous train already left the next section.

You see this happening a lot on Space Moutain; if two trains leave to soon after one another, you sometimes are put on a "break" on the lift hill in the middle of the ride (where you have to get out when it really crashes too LOL).

And before you say computers can't be trusted - don't ever compare a PLC (the chips that work on these things; they also are used in washing machines and ovens - how many times did yours crash?) to a Windows machine ;)

Anyway - just to assure you that the chances really are VERY small...

Just Do It is my advice.

It's the most "convenient" Highspeed Coaster in Disneyland. Compared to Space Mountain or Indy, this ride has not so many bumps and you can smoothly survive. During our last visit in April, our 7 year old daughter (now tall enough) tried to ride it, but was shocked when she saw the shot with the countdown at the beginning.....  :?
Title:
Post by: CafeFantasia on May 22, 2007, 05:42:35 PM
The only truly scary aspect of the Rock'n'Roller Coaster is the launch. The countdown, and the moments spent waiting to be launched, can make you feel very anxious. I think it's the shock of going from being completely stationary to travelling 60mph towards a loop. But once you're past that, it's smooth sailing until the end. The ride maintains a fairly consistent speed and makes very large sweeping turns, making it comfortable and pleasant to ride.

It's currently a relatively smooth ride, but then Space Mountain was smooth when it opened in 1995, and the two coasters use the same Vekoma ride system. So it might not be smooth forever.

I love all rollercoasters and RnRC is by far my favourite coaster at DLRP. It's not so much as scary for me, more exciting, im an adrenaline junkie at heart!  :P

I supose it just depends on each individual person as to wether they think the ride is scary or not.

I really feel weird with Roller coasters... I dont like them... The only coaster that I like is BTM... I really can wait to ride it again.... I dont know if its the themeing or just that is a really smooth and... natural (I mean that its just a train going from the top of mountain to the bottom..) ride or its just a coaster for children but I love it!

If you compare the RNRC to BTM what would you say??

* I havent been to any other coaster in DLRP because I m scared... (I should grow up but...) The only thing that made me feel better is the fact that my girlfriend was to scared to go to SMII because it was "really dark" (as she said after) and she is a true rollercoaster junkie...

On Rock 'n' Roller Coaster its still a smooth ride i think but there are loops and inversions and if you dont like fast stuff you will not like the 70mph launch of the ride. I think its a great ride though. If you wouldnt want to go on Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, i would suggest to take your next step on Indiana Jones !  :)

I would say if you don't wanna ride RnRc then you're best trying space mountain first, yeah its not a smooth at RnRc, but its a slower launch, only 44mph instead of the 60mph.

I think Indiana Jones is a bit rough for first timers, its fine if you know to hold on tight and stuff, but don't put your arms up on this one! You'll end up with a bashed elbow...i found out the hard way :(

Thanks guys...

I ve been to a lot of coasters (and a lot of really rough ones) but I simply dont like them...

BTM is the first coaster that I really love!!! The last time that I visited DLRP I told to my self that I will try and do the attractions that I did the first time I was there and I was really scared.

The attractions were:
Star Tours
Captain EO (dont ask me why... I dont know, i just freaked out! And I am a MJ fan)
BTM
Visionarium (again dont ask me why!! I simply dont know!)

This was back in 1993 (indy wasnt open yet) and I was 9 years old... So last year I tried the attractions that were still there... Star Tours was fine but in the last seconds I was waiting it to end... But BTM... WOW!! I was scared of that? It was amaizing (it was night and everything was magical)!!

I cant wait to ride it again!! That's why I was thinking of trying the other coasters in DLRP... Im hoping that I m going to like crush coaster...

I can't believe people are suggesting to try Space Mountain first if you're scared of Rock N' Roller Coaster. Space Mountain will put you off rollercoasters for life. It is easily the roughest rollercoaster I've ever ridden. I enjoy it, but the real problem is that you have a real problem keeping your head still in the harness, so when you go into the loops and turns, you end up bashing your head from side to side against the harness pads. I really think they need to do something about that, because you spend more time trying to force your head back to avoid this, than appreciating the ride. Rock N Rollercoaster is a kid's ride compared to this. Mind, I got to ride in the front car last time, and that was an awesome experience.

I agree with punky! Rock n Rollercoaster is worse than space mountain, motion wise. But I think both attractions are a stroke of genius. Brings a whole new edge to the 'dark ride'.

As for how scary rock n rollercoaster is, it depends on the person. If you're not good with high speeds or suffer from motion sickness - it aint for you. If, on the other hand, you love the high speed thrill of a rollercoaster and are an adrenaline junky - go for it! It is an amazing ride, I'm not great with rollercoasters but this really changed me lol :D, it really is great fun. Go on it!

I don't know how you can say Rock N'Rollercoaster is worse. You don't get the headbanging effect on RNR that you do on Space Mountain. I find it's really difficult to keep your head still on Space Mountain - to be honest, I think this is a bit dangerous on Space Mountain.

I love Rock n' Rollercoaster but Space Moutain? Hmm...the amount of times it's broken down when I've been on it - coupled with the headaches it gives me from unpadded head pads doesn't encourage me to get back in the queue.

I love the very back seats on Rock n' Rollercoaster!

I know what you mean about Space Mountain. It is a thrill ride, and I usually ride it everyday I'm there - but, I do find it a bit of a chore to do too. It's just the situation with the head rests I'm not happy about.

You're supposed to keep your head back on all of these coasters.

I have experienced that on Indy a couple of times (head down going through the loop), and it isn't pleasant, but I'm usually okay on Indy.

I find it very difficult to keep your head still on Space Mountain though.

Probably why I'm suffering headaches so much at the moment - it's concussion from Space Mountain in March. Then again, it could be something to do with balance sheets in my revision!

I had the pleasure of going on this coaster for the first time on Tuesday and I really enjoyed it.  We did Space mountain 3 times on Monday and RnRC 3 times on Tuesday, each ride we only had to wait 10 minutes or less  8) . Even with your head back against the head rest you still get banged about a lot on space mountain, I found RnRC was a lot smoother and much more enjoyable to ride  :D

I love the RnRC, especially when its quiet and you can run round and round going on it time after time! the best bit has to be the first inversion thingy!!
Title:
Post by: Nath on June 11, 2007, 10:06:26 AM
The Serpent Roll....? Yeah that's the best bit, seeing the lights shining towards it making you feel like you're going even faster, and then bam, straight up! :D

I don't think people need to be scared of this ride, or any others infact, people need to understand that it's a family park, they're not going to install a massive coaster which has high height restrictions which scares everyone.

They've installed three basic looping coasters, which have just been spruced up by themeing. If you were to see RnRC without the casing, you'd look at it and go - bleugh, it's nothing, just a mess of twisted track.

(Shown below is the same model in Walibi World - Netherlands)

One thing I tell a lot of my friends when riding coasters is, it's only a small fragment of your life, I myself am a massive rollercoaster geek and have ridden over 40 coasters, - that's nothing compared to a lot of people, I know.

But what you've got to see it is, it's going to only be a minute and a half of you're life that you're going to feel a little scared, as soon as the adrenalin kicks in you'll love it. It's a simple thing, I used to be freaked out by coasters when I was really young, but I honestly just used to think of my little "motto" and it worked. When I skipped all the coasters that looked really big and scary, I always regretted it when I got home.

If you're scared of inverting, then it's simple, don't ride the things. But you're not going to fall out, it's almost impossible for the restraints to come undone due to the hydraulics, and if you actually read how they work and seen all of the details and amount of safety and care put into these things while designing and building them, that might ease you a little.

Thing is, you've got nothing to be worried about, coasters are often designed for thrills, so enjoy them! :D

Nothing is ever painfull, just the vekoma coasters - RNRC and space mountain - are a little rattly due to the manufacturer.

They're all very fun and not that intense if i'm being honest. Spce mountain has 3 inversions, rnrc has 2, indiana jones has 1.

The fasted launch in the area is RNRC which still isn't that much, it's just fun.

Don't worry about going upside down, you're only upside down for a second. And on space mountain you don't even really realise until you do the corkscrew over the meteorites :)

Trust me, it's not as obvious that you're upside down as you might think!  The main thing you feel is the centripetal force pushing you into your seat.  It's not like doing a headstand.

And compared to riding a wooden rollercoaster, RNRC is smooth.  Also, your ears don't get bashed like on Indiana Jones.

The first couple of big loops you don't really notice - But the corkscrew is more noticable since you travel round it quite slowly and you feel yourself drop out of your seat onto the harnesses (I bet that's really put you off :P). But really, loops aren't bad. I used to be scared of them, but after riding all the coaster at DLRP I overcame that fear. Now I'd go on any ride in the world

Technically it has two! A Roll Over (also knowns as a Serpent Roll) and a Corkscrew. The Roll Over however inverts twice, but technically it is one element!

When I went on it last it was still a little rough, especially transition wise and the corner getting to the MCBR is also not that great either, although saying that, it is a lot smoother than the other Vekoma's i've gone on.

You shouldn't worry about how rattly a coaster is, Hell, Space Mountain is one of my favourite coasters but it's only rattly due to the upstop wheels, but these get changed and oiled mostly every year. When it comes down to it, you're not going to smash your head into the restraints, in my opinion Vekoma are the roughest manufacturer, but you'll still enjoy the experience on RnRC. If you've got any problems with your head hitting the over the shoulder restraints, just stick it forward. Resolves the problem instantly. :)

Regarding the inverted feeling, you don't really feel it, you do however feel it on RnRC rather than space mountain, but you don't need to worry about it. You see where you are going, so you know what path the train is going to follow, and when you do see yourself going upside down, i'd say it's only about two seconds max. Don't close your eyes, enjoy the feeling, it's not dissorientating in anyway, it's just one big buzz!

The speed is OK, and the launch doesn't push too hard on your chest either. (I sometimes have problems with breathing on certain types of rides due to my asthma) As soon as it gets to the Mid Course Break Run, It feels like it loses its punch so even if you are scared at first you'll be fine after the first inversion.

im kinda convinced :?  its just i said i'd never go on one but now im like i want to because i do get a thrill out going fast. if i do decide i wanna go on it, it'll just be convinving my mum to let me on :P  i mean im 16 and never really been on a roller coaster except thunder mountain   i've been on fast fair rides that spin you around and that obviously not at 60mph, so im half way there of being convinced. anybody else got a little talk for me :D

Well, I'm someone who's not really into roller coasters that much. I hate high drops, but I really love inversions. Loops not so much, because you don't really feel it, like everyone said. But corkscrews are just amazing. Too bad they never last longer than a second. I want a coaster consisting of only corkscrews.

You don't realise you're upside down on Space Mountain or Rock N' Rollercoaster. You know on Indy because you can see it coming, but it's over that quick you don't have time to think about it.

I've never felt myself pushed up against the harness on any of the Disney coasters when they've gone upside down - so I wouldn't let that comment put you off.

Recommendation, try Indy first. Then move up to Rock N' Rollercoaster, and when you feel ready, go for Space Mountain.

Your head gets bashed in between the headrest on Space Mountain. It's a very rough ride, that's why I said to build up to it. I've not experienced that really on Indy and Rock N' Rollercoaster, you just need to make sure you keep your head back against the rest. It's difficult to keep your head still though on Space Mountain.

i dont think i'll try space mountain, i dont want to hurt my neck. how fast is indy

It's not so much a case of hurting your neck, it's your head that bashes against the side of the harness, which is thankfully padded. I've never rode it and felt my necks been strained, just felt a bit concussed!

I found Indy quite rough actually, and it did hurt my backside a bit when it went into the loop. That was only on my last visit though, I don't remember it being like that on visits before then :?

My brother used to be scared of inversions, so at our last visit in August 2006 i decided to change this. I started him on Indiana Jones which he loved, then onto RnRC and finally after much persuausion onto SM2, which again he liked but did find he got bashed about a bit. Even so he now loves them all and we are going together in August, where im sure we will ride each of them loads of times!

Oh, I forgot about this topic. Well, I went on it three times now and it's not scary, it's great. The launch is frightening the first time, but fun after that.

Went on it without music the other day - it was quite incredibly boring  :(

But when everything working's OK, it's a great ride, although yes, your head can get a little knocked about (as on Space Mountain).  Plus it always smells really nice!!

I've ridden this ride 60 times, and have always had the music playing! You must have been really unlucky :P I love the smell too!

Well, I've been on it loads of times before so wasn't a huge deal - but the whole thing was a mess.  I had about 30 mins before the Toon Train show - i said there was a 10 minute wait for R'n'R so I decided to do that first.  Well as soon as I got inside it was quite clear things weren't working properly.  The queue moved very slowly, I saw a couple of empty trains go by and when I finally got on it...no music!  I just made it the Front Lot in time for the show though (yes, I know many of the members here would say not to bother with it but I love those Chipmunks :P )

R'n R Coaster isn't rough at all in my opinion, actually it's very smooth... definately compared to Indy, speaking of a rough ride!
it's a bit like SMM2, but smoother and a bit faster... theming totally different
The launch might indeed be scary the first time, but it's over before you know and the first 30 seconds really are the best part of the ride, I think.
Everybody should go on it at least once!  :D enjoy!

I like R'n'RC. It really is a good and fast ride. And your not that much bumping around like at SMM2. The launch is very fast and just after the launch comes the first loop, that's great. But for people who are afraid of riding a rollercoaster that can be a bit bad. I would not try R'n'RC as the first wild ride. Then you should first try out Indy and if you licked that and don't felt sick or so, give R'n'RC a try.

I love RnRC, especially the launch, it's just the right speed for me (Space Mountain slightly too slow and the fastest I've done - about 70-80mph at Alton Towers was too fast) I also tend to smack my head a bit but thats my own fault, I have a habit that when I like the music I tend to headbang (especially since it's rock music). If you keep your head still, all is good.

the coaster is very enjoyable, but I havent ridden it for a couple of years, why?
because I cant stand anticipation, they have a countdown and everything, too stressfull than me

Great photo, tubbsy. Those two men in front of you are wearing glasses, so would you say it's safe to keep your glasses on during the ride?[/quote
If you do keep your glasses on make sure you keep your head facing forwards when the ride stops.

I turned my head to hear what my son was saying to me just as the harness came up and I got a nasty gash on the bridge of my nose.

It is quite cool having a scar from RNRC though!

My son and me went on it three times last week and even if the first time around i was MUCH scared and worried about it (my son was nervous too), i loved every single second of RNRC.
It is pretty smooth and the music and lights are great.
Queues were never long (the longest was 10 minutes) and on thursday morning around 10.30 they even let us choose which wagon we liked because there was quite no queue.
The only *bad* thing i can tell is the last time we went both me and my son felt the protection was not tight enough and we felt like flying away at times.

I've just read through the thread and at the beginning I was saying i'd go on again.
Now its only days til we go again I've changed my mind! I cant see myself ever going on it again!

Giulia-I felt like i was fallin outof my seat a LOT when I went on it and thats what has put me off a lot. I just didnt feel safe.

Ah well, at least I can say I have done it

I lined up for this on my last visit but dropped out at the last minute.

I'm going back in November so I'm considering riding it this time.
I've only ever done BTM mountain which was great but I do suffer from motion sickness and I do suffer from on the odd occasion from a car accident about 6 years ago. I think I'm probably being too cautious but it would be great to know how this compares to BTM to help me decide if I should be ok on this ride.

Thank you

Darren

I love it!  It is sooooo fast, a smooth ride and the lights and music are amazing.  Your just need to keep your head back.  I think it is a lot smoother that Space Mountain, when I have been on Space Mountain my head is knocked about and I don't really enjoy it.  RNR is really fast and the ride is over before you know it.  I would recommend Rock N Roller.  Go on, give it a try.........

Wasn't so smooth on my camera last holiday. It wrecked my camera on the first day and I had to go and buy a new camera for the rest of the week.

I just love this rollercoaster!!! My favourite is still Space Mountain but as you all say, this one is a LOT SMOOTHER... I always get out of SMM2 with a nasty neck, head, and ears ache...
We rode it many times this week, i lost count. One time the music was off, and other time there was something strange with the lights, like not all of them were working

Yeah, that happens occasionally. You were probably just unlucky.

That seems to be happening quite a lot lately. :? How often were the lights not working properly? Did it happen quite a lot or just every now and then?

It happened only one time out of 6... SMM2 seemed to have a lot more problems than RnRC though

Another thing I noticed is that there was no smoke, last year I remember the smoke and its particular smell...

I forgot to tell that one time the lady that was in front of us in the pre-show (you know, the film with aerosmith) skipped it, opened the door and we had to go behind her due to the stampede of park guests wanting to rush through the door... she saved us a lot of time and queue places though :P (we didn't do it again we're nice people i swear :P)

The smoke is another thing that doesn't always work. :(  It's such a shame because it adds a lot to the ride, and it has a great smell too.

Naughty, naughty! [-X   I really don't like it when people do that, but like you said, you seem to be forced out the doors by the stampede of guests. I think the doors should be locked until the end of the preshow. :P

I have to say i went on RnRC 4 times when i went with my mates and since my friend lent against the door and it opened weve never stayed and watched the pre show
