Yesterday a group of DLP fan website owners were invited for a special presentation about the upcoming refurb projects all over the resort.
Here's a rundown of everything that was said based on my notes and those of Mouetto from Disney Central Plaza.
The presentation started at 9 am in Walt's - An American Restaurant. It was lead by Peggie Farris from WDI Paris and Thomas Bardenat from Park Content Projects.
Note: photo and video were forbidden during the presentation.
Peggie Farris
She's the new head of Walt Disney Imagineering Paris for six months and has a long career at the Walt Disney Co., starting as a host at Disneyland's Storybookland in 1965. Her first task within WED Imagineering was during the construction of Epcot, where she worked on the Venetian scene in Spaceship Earth.
Thomas Bardenat
Head of the new Projects for Parks Content department. They act as a bridge between Walt Disney Imagineering and Disneyland Paris, notably the refurbishment departments. He has a 10 year carreer at Disneyland Paris and started out as a CM at Phantom Manor.
First the smaller refurbishment projects were confirmed and explained:
- Big Thunder Mountain and Rainbow Arch. Both will be cleaned and repainted, in a more vivid red.
- Orbitron is undergoing some work (not detailed)
- The roofs of March Hare Refreshments, Cool Post and The Old Mill will be redone.
- The façade of Colonel Hathi's Pizza Outpost will (finally) be refurbished.
- More Fantasyland floors will be redone, notably in front of Fantasy Festival Stage.
- New flooring in front of the Walt Disney Studios Park ticketing windows (no date yet).
- The Newport Bay Club lighthouse will get some well deserved attention from 29 April - 15 June 2011.
Someone asked why paving stones were chosen over concrete. Thomas explained this was done for faster intervention when needed. Replacing a couple of stones will never result in closing of parts of the parade route. Peggie mentioned she loves new floors at the resort, clearly indicating this is an issue for WDI Paris.
Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant
We all know the Château is being refurbished, but what we didn't know was the decision to go back to the original colours of the Castle.
- Nearly all the rooftops will be painted blue, instead of green/blue and will loose their golden gradient.
- The two roofs with the snails on will be painted once again entirely in gold.
- There will be different shades of pink, darker on the bottom part of the Castle, lighter on the upper part.
- Katie Olsen from WDI Glendale used the original Château scale model to test out the new colours.
- Thomas explained there will be lots of painting during the day, because they need sunlight to check of the gradients and layers of paint are done right. The refurb is scheduled to end late August.
- No work will be done on the interior.
Fantasyland Parade Route
- Will reopen next week, in time for the press event.
- The benches at Royal Castle Stage will not return on demand by the Entertainment Department. The few benches that are still left will remain though.
- The stage is not going away, though nothing is planned for it according to Peggy.
- The repaving is being done by a German company.
Captain Hook's Pirate Ship
- The current ship will be demolished entirely and replaced by a brand new (similar in shape) ship in new materials that are better weather resident.
- The colours will be more dramatic, much closer to the original colour scheme.
- Someone asked if they were dropping the Peter Pan story, to which Peggie responded they were not. However, she said there's a story opening for Jack Sparrow (but she didn't confirm a POTC make-over at all).
- Colours will be black and red, with lots of golden touches.
- Work is expected to start early April and will end late September.
- The lake will be drained and a themed scaffolding resembling a run-down sail will enclose the construction site.
Main Street, U.S.A.
- Walt's - An American Restaurant and Gibson Girl will be repainted, in a slightly different colour palette, but no major changes.
- The colours for Gibson Girl are inspired by those of ice cream, notably creamy vanilla.
- Over at Disney & Co. there will be some major changes. The organ will be history and moved to the new Storybook Circus area of the new Fantasyland in Florida. In return, we're getting lots of visuals and posters from the same project that will adorn the new shelves in the Disney & Co. shop.
Molly Brown:
- WDI made the decision to rebuild, recolour and change the ride story.
- The story has been shifted from the Mid-West to the West.
- Three new flags appear on th eship: the 1885 USA flag with 38 stars, the early California flag (made Peggie proud as a California resident) and the Jack flag.
- The spiel was newly recorded. The captain remains French, but Molly Brown is now performed by an American actress, casted and recorded by WDI Glendale.
Tollplaza and moving walkways
- Tollplaza (the large "gate" that gives access to the main parking lot) will be repainted as well. It will reuse the blues from the Castle and golden accents will be added.
- The concept art shown to us, featured Disney and Pixar characters on the round frames over each toll gate.
- The tarps over the walkways will be painted in similar blue with golden touches.
Ratatouille photo location
- A Ratatouille photo location will be build in front of Restaurant Des Stars. It will resemble a pile of cheese with a Ratatouille backdrop.
Toy Story Playland
- The old RC Racer photo location was deemed unsafe after performing numerous tests in a backstage area.
- A new photo location will be build, resembling a giant toy box in which guests can get into and get their picture taken behind a glass window, resembling the plastic covering of the box. The actual box will be 2m60, tall enough so guests won't be able to climb on it and fall of.
- The single rider lines at RC Racer and Parachute Drop will be become official with permanent signs and bars.
- A new food cart will be added, designed to look like a big cookie box featuring "Jessie and her animals".
- A hilarious preshow video (which we were shown) will be added to the Parachute Drop queue line. A large PSP-like device will show a safety boarding video, animated by Pixar!!! The characters were designed pixelated, similar to old Nintendo video games and features most of the Toy Story characters.
- Video will be shown in French, English and English with subtitles.
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster avec Aerosmith
- A new light show will be replace the current one, complete with all new ecological equipment. Peggie didn't know if it will be LED technology, but she assumed it will.
- 2 new fog machines with new (ecological) technology which will allow a better fog-filled show building.
- Most updates will be done overnight, there will be a minimal impact during the day.
- Peggie promised some surprises on the trusts that go over the ride tracks.
- The light show was designed thanks to a new 3D software programme.
- She didn't know if the tour bus will return to the attraction, but was going to look into it.
New parade route visit
- After the presentation we headed into the park and had a stop behind the construction fences in Fantasyland where workers were finishing the final details.
(//http://www.photosmagiques.com/gallery/news_updates/25-march-2011/DSC02267_small.JPG) (//http://www.photosmagiques.com/gallery/news_updates/25-march-2011/DSC02267.JPG)
Disney Princesses Pavilion
- We then headed to the old "it's a small world" post show where we were allowed to enter the construction site. Photo and video were once again forbidden.
- The old post show is completely gone and new concrete walls that will make out the queue line were up.
- In the queue line there will be glass windows that each will represent a Disney princess castle. Between every window there will be real crystal symbol representing the Disney princesses, like an apple for Snow White and the glass slipper of Cinderella. Each will be lit up from below with fiberglass.
- Guests will be able to meet one or two princesses (depending on guest attendance).
- The interiour will be themed with bricks and stone, very Fantasyland-like.
- The exterior will look like a small chateau, similar in the way of Auberge de Cendrillon, and will feature a small tower. It will use a red-colour palette.
- A background loop has been composed just for this attraction.
Molly Brown dedication
- At 11am we were expected at the River Boat Landing for the official re-dedication of Molly Brown. The DLP Ambassadors, Reggis and Ovaldo, were the MC's of the event and welcomed Mickey, Minnie and Buffalo Bill to the show.
- During lunch, Reggis revealed to me at was him who wrote the script of the ceremony and insisted he wanted to keep it in line with the Frontierland and Molly Brown stories. He choose Buffalo Bill and the Hill Billy Trio to support the Western story.

Lunch
During lunch both Anthony and I had the chance to sit next to Peggy. She told many stories of her Disney career and asked us some questions, like which area we'd like to see "fixed". We clearly indicated that the Geysers were on our short list and I mentioned the checklist on the magicforum which she really wanted to take a look at.
Hotel refurbs
After lunch we were taken to Davy Crockett Ranch were the presentation continued in French only by Gilles Nicoulaud. I didn't get everything that was being said, so I'm looking at the report by Mouetto.
Gilles Nicoulaud is head of all the refurbishment projects. He started as a landscape architect at Golf Disneyland in 1991.
Disney's Hotel Sequoia Lodge
- 2011: 556 rooms will be redone in 2011
- 2012: 445 remaining rooms.
- The airconditioning and air recycling system will be revised to make it more ecological.
- Interior materials and furniture originate from Portugal, France, Belgium and Germany.
- A new breakfast room is being considered.
Disney's Davy Crockett Ranch
- Since late 2010; 365 cabins have been replaced.
- By 2013 all 595 should be replaced.
- New cabins were build by a French company.
- Installing them is much easier then before, a normal 4x4 can easily pull it. (A video was shown how this was done).
- Guest satisfaction has soared for Davy Crockett Ranch since the new cabins are in use.
Disney Hotels
- The other hotels will receive refurbs as well. It takes approx. 2 years for one hotel to be refurbished.
- Disney's Hotel Santa Fe is next and will start October 2011.
- The current rooms which received the Cars make-over were far from finished and were more of a patch up.
- The hotel façade and roofs will be refurbished an rethemed.
- Other hotels will follow with a retheming, but no decisions have been made yet.
- Responding to a question by Alain Littaye, Gilles confirmed a plan exists to either expand the Disneyland Hotel with a new wing or build a separate building in the same theme nearby. This was all very conceptual and execution depends on guest demand.
Davy Crockett Ranch cabin
- After the presentation we were taken to one of the new cabins, which look absolutely amazing. The cabin featured 2 bed rooms, 2 bathrooms both with showers, large fridge, flatscreen tv and elevated terrace.

After the visit were taken back to Disneyland Park were the fan meeting came to end. We returned back home with a really nice souvenir; a piece of the ribbon from the Molly Brown ceremony.
We all had an amazing time finding out about all the exciting upcoming refurbishment projects. During the day, all the attending CM's, wether they were VP, Imagineer or salary CM, they were all open to our questions and were truly open minded about our feedback. A big congratulation to DLP for listening to its fans!

It seems that they have big plans for refurbishing the Resort, witch in my opinion is great. I think it is really needed.
And the meeting seems like that DLP had used time on. It's great to hear how they told you about it all.
Thanks for posting. It all sounds very promising and exciting. Can't wait to see the finished results. Good news about the pirate ship. Good news all round. Well done DLP.
Great stuff, and some really great news. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the update, Kristof.
It seems you had a very informative day at DLRP.
I'm happy to hear that Disney tries to improve the whole resort. Honestly I want to see the park to return to its old glory than getting new attractions. By the way, did they tell you something about new attractions, like Ratatouille or Star Tours II?
It's really great that they are returning to the old color scheme of the castle. I'm wondering how they are going to incorporate Jack Sparrow into the Captain Hook's pirate ship.
Greta report!! Thank you for it! I am so happy now! :)
Thank you for reporting back to us Kristof, the news of all the refurbs are great. Although as I posted in the Rock N' Rollercoaster topic I'm dissapointed we won't be seeing a new exterior for the ride first.
Thanks for sharing, good to see a lot of refurbs in the works :)
The Santa Fe is being renamed as Hotel Cars or Cars Hotel from September according to notices in the hotel reception!
Cars Hotel? It sounds so low cost... :(
I hope this isn't true. What a stupid name. Why are they doing that? It ruins the whole American theme, but I'm sure no one cares about that.
QuoteThe Santa Fe is being renamed as Hotel Cars or Cars Hotel from September according to notices in the hotel reception!
What notices? Posted where, on scene or backstage? This is the first thing I've heard about this. :-k
Great read Kristof, very revealing insight into all the plans and really promising on quite a few issues raised, look forward to seeing the final results..
Sounds like you and Anthony had a great day, just a shame there was no video footage or images allowed, though I can understand why.. :(
Thanks again for sharing.. :D
What an excellent write-up, great job Kristof.
There's so much to say about yesterday. I'll admit being rather shy I was a little nervous attending something like this, meeting important people behind the magic and all those other fansite owners, but it was an absolute blast. Relaxed, intimate, informal and everyone was so friendly and willing to talk. The two ambassadors Osvaldo and Régis in particular are really wonderful guys, totally know and love their resort. Meeting and talking to Peggie was a real honour, hearing how she began working for Disney and progressed through Imagineering with all these familiar names popping up. She has a great humour and an absolute love for Imagineering. Being asked over lunch by the head of WDI Paris what the next refurbishment project should be... well, it doesn't get better than that.
Thank you again to the great people who put their time and effort into this day. To be allowed inside this world, to hear directly the official word on what's happening and actually be listened to is so exciting for all of us on the forum.
You'll certainly be seeing plenty of news on DLRP Today this week. Perhaps at some point the actual illustrations we saw of the Castle and Pirate Ship will be released. If not I'll give you a preview... stunning. Exactly what we wanted.
I am so amazed so much is going to be refurbished, it sounds incredible to think a few years ago we longed for all this and never got it, well done to the people who made sure this all gets done :D . I like the idea of the changing colours of façades on Main Street, quite nice to hear they're constantly thinking of reviving things within the Resort. It is also interesting to see they're willing to refurbish so much during the summer, notably the Pirate Ship, but if it can be done then and not during the freezing winter it makes sense :). All in all a wonderful report, great to see Disneyland Paris embracing the fan community.
Oh and did I mention I was one of the few to get Peggie's business card? :D/

My wife mentioned it just after I had checked us in. I guess it was either on the noticeboard on the entrance or was on the video that was showing. She had been sat/stood there with the kids while I did check-in.
Quote from: "Kristof"Yesterday a group of DLP fan website owners were invited for a special presentation about the upcoming refurb projects all over the resort.
One question Kristof>> :D
Can you tell me who the person is who makes the link between Management in the Imagineering departments / DLP Park Operations and yourselves as Fan Site Owners so that you are invited to all these meetings.. :?:
Just like the previous one you attended where Philippe Gas (CEO) was in attendance.. :-k
I know Davy has a direct link with Disney, but I'm not sure he would have been the link in this instance, though I could be wrong... Just curious..
For those who are wondering how Sleeping Beauty Castle looked like in 1992, I made a comparison photo (click to enlarge):
(//http://www.imgdash.com/uploads/thumbs/4cee2d51.jpg) (//http://imgdash.com/4cee2d51.jpg)
It's funny how the castle looks older in 1992 than it does in the now picture... Can't wait to see it finished! :D
I like the castle in 1992 best, so I'm very glad that Disney are going back to the original colours.
Oh my, this is absolutely amazing news, I can't believe something like this is just popping up out of nowhere (for me at least)! The old color scheme will return to the castle? Can't believe it! A new light show and new fog machines for RNRC? Amazing!! The new Pirate Ship will also feature the original color scheme? Brilliant!! Also I can't wait for the Pixar produced Parachute Drop queue line video, I'm sure it will be hilarious. Great to hear about the ongoing hotel refurb, although I'm a bit worried about the "retheming" bit. But looking at what they did to they Sequoia Lodge I think / hope they won't do anything too stupid for the other hotels.
Thanks for the great report Kristof and can't wait for your DRLP Today posts regarding all this, Anthony!
Quote from: "Nicolai"Also I can't wait for the Pixar produced Parachute Drop queue line video, I'm sure it will be hilarious.
Oh it really is! You can absolutely tell Pixar worked on it. The renderings of the main Toy Story characters as giant-pixelated game characters are just funny for no reason. You see Mrs Potato Head store her handbag and Mr Potato Head put his hat inside his body, etc, but really slowly and crudely. Great throwback to the days of the Game Boy (although the handheld console the screen will be housed in looked a bit more like a PSP crossed with a SNES controller, landscape with buttons either side of the screen).
It's also great news that the single rider lines will be properly implemented. I used the Parachute Drop single rider this morning (well yesterday morning now) during a 70 minute queue and must have waited only about 15 minutes at most.
I was less convinced about the new RC packaging/box photo location they showed (two designs were shown, with slightly different artwork). It looked rather uninspired, like a cheap seasonal decoration. But then I don't like the parachute photo backdrop either (which was coincidentally missing its parachute today). Maybe it'll be better in reality?
The food cart looked pretty good, it's nice that it'll introduce Jessie and the Woody's Roundup universe to the land (the cookie tin appeared to be some kind of circus/animal wagon with the "critters" from the TV show in cages, if I was seeing it right, very retro). I don't think we found out where it would be located.
that is wonderful news! thank you for sharing!
it must have been a great event and Iyou must have felt pretty special! what a great idea, to involve the fans in their future plans and asking us our opinions!

I was told this by a member of Santa Fe staff. My son was talking about the new sign above the hotel being a Cars sign now and the member of staff was telling me that the bedding in the hotel had also changed to Cars. He also said if my son liked Cars we should come back in Sept because the hotel was going to be changed with lots more Cars stuff around and was also being re-named to the Cars hotel!!
hi,
Cant wait for the new pirate ship!!! When is the princess meet and greet due to open??
Jackie
Thanks for sharing! However, let's continue the Santa Fe / Cars discussion in its dedicated topic here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9573&p=168001 (https://forum.dlpguide.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9573&p=168001%22%20onclick=%22window.open(this.href);return%20false;)
Just so we don't mix up stories!
Great read! Few points though:
Snails on the castle?
Rethemeing of each hotel? (was that worded wrong, should that have been refurbishment?)
And new Newport bay needs more than just a clean up of the Lighthouse tower...
Quote from: "Martyn"And new Newport bay needs more than just a clean up of the Lighthouse tower...
Don't worry, this will be a complete refurbishment, finished for this summer season. ;)
Thanks for the report!
Disappointed the caste refurb completion date is now August, when I emailed I got a response informing me it would be finished end of June intime for summer season as we are going before August :(
On the bright side, the castle will be almost done when you go. They might even finish the lower part of the castle in June (that is covered by the scaffolds) and finish off the rest at night.
Tahnks for sharing - its great that Disney want to share all this with their dedicated fans
Quote from: "Martyn"... Snails on the castle? ...

Oooooh jealous! :P
Quote from: "Martyn"Rethemeing of each hotel? (was that worded wrong, should that have been refurbishment?)
It will be refurbs / retheming (example: Cars being added to Santa Fe).
Loving the sound of the Rock 'N' Rollercoaster update that is on the cards, it's about time too.
'Surprises' on the trusses over the ride track eh? This sounds like it could be one to watch, especially with the possibility of the use of LED.. Seeing as the giant screen used in Moteurs..Action! is LED based, you never know, we could end up with small LED walls/blocks/screens on the truss which shows visuals.. (which would generally rock)
Any ideas on the rough predicted dates that they are looking at completing this one, even if it's just an approximate month or year!
Thank you for the report, excellent news and about time too. =D>
Just wondering what effect, if any, the pirate ship refurb will have on the princess and priates party?
all sounds great........ except.......... the re-theming of the hotels :(
Whilst I agree santa fe needs some kind of a re-theme because the current theme just looks too cheap and dull, I dont see how they can get completely away from the current theme to a cars theme without basically knocking the whole hotel down and starting again. The building exteriors doesnt work. Neither does the interior of the main building. none of it really works without stripping it right back to the basic structures and starting again with the theming of the whole site.
and then..... what on earth are they going to do with the other hotels? I assume they'll be again attempting to apply a theme relating to a character/movie? How is that going to work with New York or newport bay? and if they touch Cheyennes theme I'll be very disappointed!!!
The Hotel New York could have lots of references to the movie Enchanted, which would be quite cool.
The Newport Bay Club could have references to the Little Mermaid, you know, Eric the sailor and all the nautical stuff :-)

Did Disney mention anything about the refurb of Fantasia Gelatti? I think Kristof posted a picture in one of his updates.
Quote from: "dagobert"Did Disney mention anything about the refurb of Fantasia Gelatti? I think Kristof posted a picture in one of his updates.
No, I don't think there was anything. The first thing we saw on the powerpoint presentation was a map of the park with areas to be refurbished coloured in... I can't remember if there was anything there. Even forgot to get a photo of it myself, because it's so awkward to get to at the moment.

That's weird... Search "Peggie Fariss" and you find a Facebook profile, etc with that spelling. Oh well, I suppose both are correct then!
Did you email yet? :P I keep thinking of things we could have mentioned, like the black rubber flooring in Toy Story Playland, the Armageddon facade, the back of Studio 1, the disused Fastpass machines at the Tram Tour, the dull state of Animagique's entrance,
the lockers under Main Street Station....

oh the list goes on and on, doesn't it. top of my list would have been...why are there no rescuers in either of the parks?
Really, top of your list? :)
Check out Main Street Motors next time you're there! http://www.photosmagiques.com/gallery/d ... motors.php (http://www.photosmagiques.com/gallery/disneyland_park/main_street_usa/main_street_motors.php%22%20onclick=%22window.open(this.href);return%20false;)

I'd like to see the bubbling fountains and fire return to the entrance of Discoveryland.
Does her reach extend to entertainment? Would love to see the Dapper Dans and Piano Player at Casey's return.
But I agree, the Geysers would be my first priority not on that list, followed by the Discoveryland fountains (both at the front as well as the Nautilus bubbles).
I'd also love to see Main Street Motors return to a car/garage museum, but I know that won't happen.
I'd like to see all the Main street buildings and the Disneyland Hotel with all the little lights working for once, but that is doubtful, too :(
Also, I'd like to see something done about Pizza planet. (i.e. get rid of it and build something permanent that inkeeps with the Visionaries theme)
That sounds amazing, I can't wait to see all the new refurbs. It would be nice to see the parks nice and clean and freshly painted.
When will all these take place/ when will all of these be completed?
Also does that mean the new Princesses Pavilion will open sometime this year?
And I agree with davewasbalo, I would LOVE to see the Dapper dans in the park. ^^

its so beautiful, but after your first three shops, you get the feeling that every shop sells the same.
most effects are quite small, so could they not just give a couple of days to fix each thing. it could be fixed within a couple of months.
So glad that the priorty is to maintain and fix up the existing content, rather than adding even more stuff.
Newport Bay Lighthouse - yes ! Looks terrible up close.
Not quite sure what state these rides are in nowadays, but how are the Labyrinth and the Tea Cups looking these days?
Quote from: "Pete's Dragon"Not quite sure what state these rides are in nowadays, but how are the Labyrinth and the Tea Cups looking these days?
Tea Cups - really excellent. I was so pleased seeing it all lit up the night before this presentation. Lanterns much brighter, floor pretty clean, entrance marquee had all its lights working and every coloured light on the roof working.
Labyrinth - it looked great from outside, but was closed for refurbishment (again!) except for two days at the weekend and didn't open till 11am so I couldn't take a look. But certainly a vast improvement again.
Yay! So did they refurb the teacups as well. Last year it looked half done.
Quote from: "davewasbaloo"Yay! So did they refurb the teacups as well. Last year it looked half done.
Last time I went they closed it to clean the roof, which looked lovely afterwards. But the floor needed cleaned and the matting around the saucers was patchy.
A pristine park is definitely better than an expanded one
Quote from: "Pete's Dragon"A pristine park is definitely better than an expanded one
Absolutely!
I´m really happy that they now do all this things. The delay in refurbs has to come to an end. Why do we need such a hard programm? Cause they had no or less refurbs between 2000 and 2006. Hope they learned their lessons.
For the next steps after this list I have for the parks the geysers, the lava pool aaaand - a big one - the treehouse on my list. The treehouse has less leaves. You can see tooo much of extern areas at the top.
For the resort the floor is one thing. Refurb lake disney (and all the concret structurs around) is another one. And yes also the landscaping. If that´s something were we can say refurb...

Looks like you all had a great time.
Have to say I love Frontierland Mickey and Minnie, don't think I've ever seen them in those outfits before, they should have them for Meet 'n' Greets.
Disney should have to consult this "Fan Brain Trust" before changing or building anything at Disneyland Paris :-) Seriously, they need to listen more to people who know about the parks, and genuinely care about them.
And isn´t that an interesting step? Talking about news so directly? With this Mr. Gas private talks and the shareholders round tables they seem to understand that they need their fan base more.
Quote from: "Kristof"For those who are wondering how Sleeping Beauty Castle looked like in 1992, I made a comparison photo (click to enlarge):

Are those people I see climbing up the outside of the castel in 1992? I wasn't aware that guests were ever allowed to do that!
They were cast members ;) That shot is from Opening day, so you can see Mickey, Sabine, Roy, Eisner and Bob Fitzpatrick on the balcony for the dedication ceremony :)
I sounds like you all had a really fun time! :D
When is this video of the event that DLP made going to be released? :)

Quote from: "Riebi"And isn´t that an interesting step? Talking about news so directly? With this Mr. Gas private talks and the shareholders round tables they seem to understand that they need their fan base more.
Absolutely, it's a really positive step. I think it also gives us so much more appreciation for everything they do. Being able to actually meet the people making these refurbishments happen makes them that much more impressive. It's not just "Disney magic" and things appearing by chance overnight, but lots of hard work, thought and effort every day of the year from hundreds of people.
I'm just writing up about the new Castle colours now, and imagining if they hadn't shown us the concepts. We'd have been speculating for months and no doubt along the way had lots of negative opinions thrown up. Same for the Princess Pavillion. I really was
not impressed by that whole idea before, but now I've actually seen the concept art and a bit of the works... well, I can put up with it. :P
For the US parks they just leapfrogged the fansites and blogs and set up their own Disney Parks Blog, but at Disneyland Paris - so far at least - they're coming to us and respecting the sites many of us have run for almost a decade, trusting us to report the news for them.
Quote from: "Adam"What other websites went to the presentation?
It all went too fast for me to put all the names/faces together, but off top of my head there was Disney Central Plaza, Disney Magic Interactive, Disney Gazette, NewsParcs, Disney & More, ADCP...
QuoteWe all had an amazing time finding out about all the exciting upcoming refurbishment projects. During the day, all the attending CM's, wether they were VP, Imagineer or salary CM, they were all open to our questions and were truly open minded about our feedback. A big congratulation to DLP for listening to its fans!
To be fair if Disneyland Paris was really that concern with listening to its fans it would not be inviting webmasters down to the Resort that are encouraged to write nice things about them or they can say goodbye to anymore free trips. Sorry I have a lot of time for both you Kristof and Anthony but I'm not convinced that Disneyland Paris is listening to its fans as much as it should be here.
On the positive side I am very impressed by all the different refurbishments that have been announced. Unfortunately most of this stuff could had been avoided had the Resort done more to refurbish this stuff in earlier years. Now a lot of stuff is going to have to be replaced or built from new. And than there is the task of maintening this stuff for the years to come. Will EuroDisney keep on top of it. Or continue to allow everything to decline until it breaks again.
They're are replacing the galleon. But I think thats a good idea. A nice new galleon built out of weather resistant material apparently. I think that's a good idea. Don't other Disney parks build from new sometimes? Maintenance has turned out to be a challenge for them. But when you take into account the weather in northern Europe which can be harsh in the winter. Presentations like this create a better understanding between EuroDisney and the fans. It's nice to know what's going on instead of speculating all the time, which is what we mostly do.
QuoteBut when you take into account the weather in northern Europe which can be harsh.
The Disney Resort in Tokyo, Japan is also open to some harsh weather conditions at times. Especially with it being located on Tokyo Bay. Yet I don't see things falling apart like you do in Paris. So I can't view the weather as an escuse here. Also when you see how quickly its acted to fix a lot of the minor damage done after the recent Earthquake. Your left with a greater impression of just how on top of things that Resort seems to be when it comes to maintenance and upkeep.
I get the impression nothing ever breaks down or goes wrong at TDL, I don't know? I'm talking about DLP and it's situation, not OLC. And during the Earthquake Tokyo came out of it a lot better than other parts of the country I believe.
Quote from: "Malin"Sorry I have a lot of time for both you Kristof and Anthony but I'm not convinced that Disneyland Paris is listening to its fans as much as it should be here.
Should they actually listen to their fans? Personally, I think that they should rather listen more to their own creative staff. In my experience, Imagineering projects (much like most creative business endeavors) are better off when they're not based on market research but on creative vision. Don't give people what they think they want, surprise them.
As for logistic issues such as upkeep, that's a different story.
Quote from: "Malin"The Disney Resort in Tokyo, Japan is also open to some harsh weather conditions at times. Especially with it being located on Tokyo Bay. Yet I don't see things falling apart like you do in Paris.
Um. Yes. Except that the Tokyo Resort has always been an enormous financial success from the start and never had those budget issues to resolve.
From what fans have been told at the meeting, more of DLP's limited resources are being spent on refurbishment these days. They got to see first hand that there are people at DLP who genuinely care about the parks. And I think we should probably be happy for that.
Thanks for all these updates over the whole week, it's been great reading them. Very excited about the updates to Rock n Roller Coaster. And the castle looks like it will be stunning, just a simple change in hue of the pink is going to make a huge difference judging by the small sections done already.
Quote from: "Kristof"Quote from: "Martyn"Rethemeing of each hotel? (was that worded wrong, should that have been refurbishment?)
It will be refurbs / retheming (example: Cars being added to Santa Fe).
Yeah, I've seen that, but it does it mean that every hotel is going to be tied in with a film?
QuoteI get the impression nothing ever breaks down or goes wrong at TDL, I don't know? I'm talking about DLP and it's situation, not OLC. And during the Earthquake Tokyo came out of it a lot better than other parts of the country I believe.
You were blaming the weather and I only pointed out that Disneyland Paris is not the only Disney Resort that gets hit by extreme weather conditions each year. In fact I would say the weather in Tokyo can sometimes be worst. Since the park is often hit by typhoons in the Autunm. The area the Tokyo Disney Resort is located in is urayasu, Chiba which was declared a disaster area after the Earthquake. Since a lot of it was built on reclaim land. The only reason no major damage was done to the Resort is thanks to the long-term planning of the Resort Imagineers. The Resort is not perfect but it does place its vaules on how people see the park first. And does its best to keep to that image.
QuoteShould they actually listen to their fans? Personally, I think that they should rather listen more to their own creative staff. In my experience, Imagineering projects (much like most creative business endeavors) are better off when they're not based on market research but on creative vision. If EuroDisney had listen to its fans more we may not be stuck with Toy Story Playland right now. But I do agree that I don't think it should be going by what market research has to say all the time. If Management can't work out for themselves what are the right decisions to make. Should any of them have a job in the first place.
QuoteFrom what fans have been told at the meeting, more of DLP's limited resources are being spent on refurbishment these days. They got to see first hand that there are people at DLP who genuinely care about the parks. And I think we should probably be happy for that.
To be fair I see a lot of limited resources being spent on crap that could be better spent on the parks. Some of the new Magical Moments entertainment for instance is a complete waste of money. I am still not convinced that Disneyland Paris have a genuine interest in what the fans think. With more refurbishments coming up however I am willing to give them a chance to prove that there do care for the parks. But its going to take a lot more convincing me than reading anything some webmaster of a fan site has to say on the subject. I want to see real hard evidence and this is the reason why I'm going to be monitoring the situation very closely from now on.
Quote from: "Malin"The Resort is not perfect but it does place its vaules on how people see the park first. And does its best to keep to that image.
And like I said, they've always had the money to actually do so. I'll repeat: We have the bad weather
and financial problems here in Paris.
QuoteBut I do agree that I don't think it should be going by what market research has to say all the time. If Management can't work out for themselves what are the right decisions to make. Should any of them have a job in the first place.
But that's a general problem not limited to DLP. Why do you think we see all those character-based additions in Disney parks around the world? Because that's what people think they want! I'd argue that it's pretty much the same reason we get all those sequels and remakes in cinemas these days...
And to get back to the actual point, I'm not convinced that fans actually know what's in the resort's best interest. Nobody really knows, but DLP itself arguably has better data to make educated guesses.
The Magical Moments Festival for example may not appeal to you and me, but as they can't afford to add a new attraction every year right now, those annual themes are simply an incentive to get people to come (back) at a time when there's little else that's new. Whether that works or not, I can't judge... but if they hadn't brought in more money than they cost, I'm pretty sure they would have abandoned the idea of themed years altogether by now.
I hope so, anyway.
QuoteI want to see real hard evidence and this is the reason why I'm going to be monitoring the situation very closely from now on.
I'm sure they'll be on their toes now that they know. ;)
Well Peggie seems nice, and she obviously cares very much about the park. Also, with this new department that "act as a bridge between WDI and DLP's management," it sounds as though things are looking up. :)
@DGRavenswood "And to get back to the actual point, I'm not convinced that fans actually know what's in the resort's best interest. Nobody really knows, but DLP itself arguably has better data to make educated guesses."
I think you've been spot on with a couple of points here, imagine a park run for 'superfans', I'm not sure it would be as good as some might think, and I'm certain it would be a crummy business. The fact is, fans may not be all that representative of those who visit and love Disney parks, and the parks are for everyone who goes, not just those 'in the know' so to speak.
I'm really glad that as an organisation they are trying a different strategy on engaging people, such as the very family focused ad campaign, to events like this hoping to get inroads in to fan sites. I think it will probably be a good strategy and signifies a shift in emphasis towards quality of experience, if it doesn't go far enough to please everyone would not be surprising, and may well be right.
Now, many people won't agree with that, and that's kinda my point.
QuoteAnd like I said, they've always had the money to actually do so. I'll repeat: We have the bad weather and financial problems here in Paris.
That may be so but a lot of the financial problems it brings on to itself. The reason the Tokyo Disney Resort makes lots of money is down to knowing what the Guests want from a Disney themepark experience. It sells the kind of merchandise the Japanese want to buy. How often do we all complain on here that we can never find anything we want to buy when we visit Disneyland Paris. And yet you visit TDR and you see people leaving each day with bags full of gifts to take back home.
QuoteAnd to get back to the actual point, I'm not convinced that fans actually know what's in the resort's best interest. Nobody really knows, but DLP itself arguably has better data to make educated guesses.
Is that why the Studios is performing so well. All thanks to educated guesses from up above. And the reason TSPL has yet to really make any impact on the overall number of people who visit.
QuoteThe Magical Moments Festival for example may not appeal to you and me, but as they can't afford to add a new attraction every year right now, those annual themes are simply an incentive to get people to come (back) at a time when there's little else that's new. I'm not complaining that new things shouldn't be tried out every year. But these Festivals are rarely viewed in high regard and often the money could be spent on other things instead. Like bringing the Lion King back to the Videopolis.
Quotethink you've been spot on with a couple of points here, imagine a park run for 'superfans', I'm not sure it would be as good as some might think, and I'm certain it would be a crummy business.
We already have a park for Superfans. We call it Tokyo DisneySea. And its a very suscessful place. Riding Journey to the Centre of the Earth sure beats anything Toy Story Playland has to offer.
Quote from: "Malin"We already have a park for Superfans. We call it Tokyo DisneySea. And its a very suscessful place. Riding Journey to the Centre of the Earth sure beats anything Toy Story Playland has to offer.
Are you really going to compare Journey To The Center Of The Earth with TSPL? It's like comparing a FIAT with a Ferrari. :D Every attraction in both Tokyo parks beats TSPL. I would even say, nearly every Disney attraction beats TSPL, except Chester & Hester's Dinorama.
We're really getting off topic here...
Quote from: "Malin"That may be so but a lot of the financial problems it brings on to itself. The reason the Tokyo Disney Resort makes lots of money is down to knowing what the Guests want from a Disney themepark experience.
Let's say that it helps that plenty of Japanese fully embrace Disney culture. DLP isn't so lucky with its audience.
QuoteIt sells the kind of merchandise the Japanese want to buy. How often do we all complain on here that we can never find anything we want to buy when we visit Disneyland Paris. And yet you visit TDR and you see people leaving each day with bags full of gifts to take back home.
I see that at DLP a lot, actually... Again, you're talking about us here on a Disney fan board complaining about the souvenirs. That's a very limited audience. In 1992 DLP had some high quality, diverse merchandise that everybody on this forum would dream about these days. But it didn't sell! Unfortunately it wasn't what the general public wanted.
QuoteI'm not complaining that new things shouldn't be tried out every year. But these Festivals are rarely viewed in high regard and often the money could be spent on other things instead. Like bringing the Lion King back to the Videopolis.
Are you sure that bringing back an old show would prompt thousands of families to plan their next DLP vacation? The festivals (are supposed to) work because they create an urgency... You have to come this very year if you want to see X small shows and meet characters Y and Z. And again, it's not marketed to us fans (personally I don't care for characters and their shows at all) but I think that for many regular guests it might provide an incentive.
QuoteWe already have a park for Superfans. We call it Tokyo DisneySea. And its a very suscessful place. Riding Journey to the Centre of the Earth sure beats anything Toy Story Playland has to offer.
TDS isn't a park for Superfans. It's a park that was driven by the creative vision of the Imagineers involved, not by what some people on a message board demanded. Which is exactly what I was saying earlier:
Quote from: "I"Should they actually listen to their fans? Personally, I think that they should rather listen more to their own creative staff. In my experience, Imagineering projects (much like most creative business endeavors) are better off when they're not based on market research but on creative vision. Don't give people what they think they want, surprise them.
Now, would DLP do any better if they had miraculously managed to build TDS instead of WDS? Who knows! Chances are they'd be even more in debt and only we fans would have been happy for five minutes... until we noticed the place falling completely into ruin.
There, see? I sort of made it back on topic.
Quote from: "Malin"To be fair if Disneyland Paris was really that concern with listening to its fans it would not be inviting webmasters down to the Resort that are encouraged to write nice things about them or they can say goodbye to anymore free trips. Free trip? No it wasn't. My little two night break for this cost me a lot of money when you include hotel and trains from the UK, which I had to book at the last minute because we didn't get the details until about two weeks beforehand. (Though it was worth it, of course)

Absolutely! Anything I could ever suggest to Imagineering, they've thought of already ten years ago. It's more about whether management and the banks are on board, I guess.
The best thing about this event as a fan wasn't to be listened to but to be talked to...
Quote from: "DGRavenswood"From what fans have been told at the meeting, more of DLP's limited resources are being spent on refurbishment these days. They got to see first hand that there are people at DLP who genuinely care about the parks. And I think we should probably be happy for that.
Indeed. You always know they're there behind the scenes, working hard, but to meet these people and hear first-hand about these projects is totally different. Seeing the individual human effort gives you so much more appreciation. We talk about the castle and Molly Brown on here and it just sort of happens, it's Disneyland... Sitting there and being given such a huge amount of information direct from the people at the top was almost surreal. Hopefully it was good for both sides: Those toiling away on refurbishments also got to meet a group of people who care just as much as themselves about those five exact new shades of pink, etc, and know there are hundreds and thousands more like us out there on forums here and beyond.
For me it´s an extremly good step, that the resort now "invite" fans/website-masters to have a little "press conference/talk". I don´t like the old DLP way, which means to talk about things to their guest after the things where at the park for a while.

Quote from: "dagobert"What are they going to refurb in Adventureland and what's happening with the Fantasyland Festival Stage?
In Adventureland, Colonel Hathi's Pizza Outpost will get a much-needed exterior refurbishment and the thatched roof of the Coolpost will be redone. I'm not sure about the area around the Bazaar... repaving?
In Fantasyland it's more repaving, between Fantasy Festival Stage and Dumbo.
The map went by so quickly in the presentation I'm glad they released it for everyone to see. I never noticed the red spot on the Rivers of the Far West before, in the corner near Chaparral Theater.
Please let that be where those horrible landing rafts are, that they might be integrating them better...
I may have missed it but are there dates set for BTM refurb?
It's really surreal to see all these familiar (yet rarely seen) faces on Disneyland Paris' official YouTube channel.

I hadn't thought about that. Disney actually put you in a tricky situation. As anyone who uses the Eurostar knows, the later you book it, the more expensive it is. So while it's great that Disney invited you to this special event, it kind of sucks that they did it at such short notice, forcing you to pay for overpriced Eurostar tickets!
People that live 15-30 minutes away from the theme parks (in France) are really blessed when it comes to this kind of reporting, as they can visit within a few hours notice, and do it without any of the associated Eurostar and Hotel Room charges.
has anyone seen the post about water fountains in the castle moat? was this not mentioned at the presentation?
