Title: N20 9-11 January trip - Finished!
Post by: never2old on January 13, 2010, 08:09:50 PM
Hello!

My brother is back home from university in Boston (he's studying film scoring, he's going to be the next Michael Giacchino   ) and with him being a big Disney fan, and not having been to DLP in over a year, and the wonderful 40% discount offers, well we simply had to book a trip...

Then my mother got jealous, and she convinced my father to join us for one day in the parks, and one day of shopping in the Val d'Europe outlet!

Friday night, after work, we left towards Paris. We had booked a couple of nights in the Marriott Village (didnt particularly want to share a room with my parents and my brother, a two-bedroom villa seemed perfect!) We got there around 10:00 Friday night, ate some dinner, and watched Enchanted (to get in the right mood   ).

Of course, it was all covered in snow...

And the next morning:

We had a breakfast pack, which meant we got a baguette, some croissants, coffee, milk, juice, ham, cheese... A huge, delicious breakfast, and a great way to start the day.

My parents:

And my brother Miguel with my mother:

After breakfast, it was shopping time. The sales were on, which I think made the outlet even busier than usual, but we got there early enough to get most things done before the big crowds got there...

After a rather exhausting shopping spree (not the best idea to take my mother there, she could have spent there a few days   ), we went for lunch to the Disney Village (where else!!) The Steakhouse was booked for a private function  :(  so we went to Ludwig's Castle, it was nice and quiet and of course delicious!!

By now it was close to 4pm, and after a bit of shopping in the DV (I got a really nice Mickey DT, I'll post a picture later) we headed to Paris.

Pictures of Paris by night coming next!

Paris still had lots of Christmas decorations around, which by night, looked beautiful!

We headed to Champs Elysées, had a walk around, before driving back to the Marriott in the evening. It was really nice!

VERY nice night pics! We're going to Paris in March right after our visit to DLP, so these are very appreciated.  =D>

By the way, the picture with the giant snail is the Val d'Europe outlet? We'll have to go there one afternoon, my fiancée says she won't marry me if we don't...  :? (Actually, I'll probably enjoy the shopping time, as usual, but I like teasing her...  )

Looking forward to the next set of pictures and, of course, I'm eager to listen to the next "Space Mountain: Mission 3" composed by your brother...!!!  :)

Yes, the giant snail is in the Val d'Europe outlet. If you get there early morning or on a weekday (when it's quieter), it's really pleasant!! And if you get tired of shopping, they have a nice little Starbucks... Or you can go to the big shopping centre next to the outlet. You can easily spend a few hours in there!

Not as often as I'd like, you know... But I try to go at least a couple of times a year, if more opportunities come up I never turn them down!    ILast year I managed to go 8 times....

And thank you all for your comments  :D

Next chapter:

Sunday morning, after getting everyone up early (who wants to waste time in bed when you could be in the parks   ) we went to the New York Hotel. It's definitely my favourite hotel (after the Disneyland Hotel, that is), and I hope I can stay there many times to come. As soon as we walked in, we were welcome by the lovely, warm smell, and some of the Christmas decorations. Someone took our bags, and in no time we had our park tickets. There was a bit of a queue for the checkout, but otherwise the hotel was really quiet. Lovely.

Outside, it was all covered in snow... Beautiful! And yes, it was also very cold (but we were dressed for it, so not too much of a problem)

The Christmas tree outside the NYH was still up:

Lake Disney was looking quite solid...

Seagulls meeting point... The whole resort was full of them, I don't think I've ever seen so many!

And the ducks don't mix with the seagulls
(//http://images47.fotki.com/v1589/photos/8/1582018/8084712/P1010269-vi.jpg)

By now it was 10:00, so we headed to the Studios. My dad hadn't  seen them yet, so we couldn't go to Disneyland without a visit to the Studios...

The area around the fountain was closed off (too slippery with the ice and snow), but you could walk aroudn easily. Overall it was OK to walk everywhere, there wasn't much snow (nor ice) on the ground, except in some areas. Which was great, because I'm rather clumsy, and even though I was wearing snow boots, I didn't want to end up with a twisted ankle or anything!

Inside Studio 1, most of the Christmas decorations were still up:

My mom and I:

And my brother with my parents:

I thought we could do the Studio Tram Tour (my parents didn't particularly fancy trying out the Tower of Terror...) but it was closed down, I guess because of the weather. So instead we went to Armaggedon. It was fairly quiet so we were not too crowded, which was a nice change from other times... Neither my parents nor my brother had done it before, and they all enjoyed it. I also liked it, the CM at the pre-show was really good. He was also giving some directions when we were inside, so it was a lot of fun.

Miguel and I got some fastpasses for the Tower (for 12:00). We had a bit of time before Animagique (at 11:00) so we had a little walk around the Studios.

Animagique was beautiful was always, and we followed it with Cinemagique. Such a beautiful movie, I cannot recommend it enough.

After Cinemagique, we were just on time for our TOT fastpasses. Despite the cold there was still a fair amount of people around, so we ended up waiting a bit in the machine room, it took us about 40 minutes to come out. My parents were waiting for us in the shops, and together we all went to Disneyland.

Next part coming up!

Thank you all!

It looked really different with all the snow and frozen lakes, yes. It was really beautiful. If we'd had some blue skies, it would have been incredibly stunning. It was really special!

Here's part 2:

After the Studios, we made our way accross the very wintery Fantasia Gardens to Disneyland Park. Everything was frozen, it was really beautiful.

Miguel protecting himself from the cold.... Slightly overdoing for the picture of course. Teenagers

Main Street was looking beautiful. The Christmas tree and all the decorations in Town Square were of course now completely gone, and so was the Christmas music. For me, walking into the parc and hearing that wonderful Main Street music, really makes me feel like I'm coming home...

Our first destination was It's a Small World. The Christmas overlay is still there, and it's really beautiful. And the different soundtrack really makes the ride feel very different. And to top it all there was no queue at all, so no one had any reason not to go in! (my dad and my brother didn't seem to happy about doing it, they're not big fans of the IASW song, they say it goes on and on and on and on   )

Ducks have chosen IASW as their territory. There were plenty of them outside, but for some reason none of them go into the ride... Maybe they don't like the music either

Really beautiful ride... Even my dad enjoyed it!

We had booked lunch at 2pm at Walt's (since my parents had agreed to come, I had to take them to a nice place for lunch!!), and by now it was after 1:30, we had time for one more ride. It was between Peter Pan and Pirates, and my father chose POTC. So we made our way accross a gorgeous Fantasyland, towards Adventureland and POTC.

Here's part 3:

We crossed from Fantasyland to Adventureland, and were welcome by a very wintery Skull Rock:

This was seagull territory:

Our next stop was Pirates (we walked straight in, no queue at all). Absolutely brilliant. The swinging pirate is still missing, and it was a bit dark at some points (you couldn't really see the cats at the beginning), but overall it was really looking good! And Carlos the mayor was spitting out water and everything!! Great great ride, I cannot say that enough...

By now it was almost lunchtime, so we started making our way to Main Street and Walt's.

Party Time was on when we walked past:

Unfortunately we were a bit short on time so we didn't stay to watch it, that show has really grown on me... When we first arrived to the park I had thought that maybe the show would be cancelled because of the weather, but then we saw them about an hour before the show heating the stage (or melting the ice) with something that looked like a flamethrower   I should have taken some pictures...

Anyway, here are some pictures from Walt's. If anyone hasn't been there yet, please try it next time you go... One of the best restaurants around!

We were seated in the Frontierland area (a first for me), in a small room with just 3 or 4 tables. Lovely and quiet. And great view of Main Street:

My delicious cheesecake:

With a coffee:

After lunch and a bit of shopping around Main Street (plenty of stuff on sale as well...), it was time for my parents to leave. They didn't want to drive back home (it's a 3 hour drive) too late, with the weather as it was. So we walked all together back to the New York Hotel, where the car was parked, and said our goodbyes.

My brother and I were alone, so time for some rollercoasters! Our first stop: WDS, and RNRC...

Part 4 to follow!

Thanks againf N2O! Your review is becoming definately useful for our honeymoon trip. Walt's has always been on top of our restaurants list and we're glad you enjoyed it that much. Can't wait to make the reservation...

And, again, great photos. First, nightshots, now err... "snow shots" (?). Anyway, either in the dark or completely surrounded by white snow, your pics look great!  =D>

Looking forward to your next part.  :)

Oh, you should definitely go to Walt's!! It's really a great restaurant. Beautiful theming, delicious food, and it's really quiet, makes for a wonderful break! The service is really good, they're really lovely there, and the presentation is quite elegant.

Again great pictures!! Walt's is our favorite restaurant at DLRP, too and we can't wait to eat there again in February. Hopefully it is open.
The food looks so delicious and I think I have to try the cheesecake.

Looking forward to the rest of your report.

Amazing pictures, next time I go to DLP I'm going to have to eat at Walt's after seeing that cheesecake!!

All this talk about Walt's is getting me hungry again...

Here's the last part for Sunday!

So around 5, my parents left, and my brother and I headed straight to the Studios.

They really seemed busier than Disneyland. Maybe because there were more adults than families around, or maybe it was just an illusion, but there were definitely queues in WDS. Crush of course had something over 1 hour   , TOT I think had around 30 and RNRC around 20.

We first had a look around the shop in TOT. I'm still looking for that TOT hoodie they used to sell, but I haven't seen it in ages... Still, I have to check!

The Hollywood Tower Hotel back in its glory days...

And today!

Not many roses in the Rose Garden this time of the year
(//http://images18.fotki.com/v674/photos/8/1582018/8343873/P1010381-vi.jpg)

After browsing all the stuff they had on sale, we headed to RNRC. Miguel had never done it, and he had been waiting to try it since his last visit, over a year ago... So even though it had a little bit of a queue (those 20 minutes were the only real queue we did during the whole trip, so cannot really complain   ) we went straight in. I had told him that the start was fast, but I don't think he was expecting it to be quite so fast!

Still, he loved it  :D  So much that we went straight in again, and this time waited a little under 10 minutes... Brilliant.

When we got out, it was fully dark:

We wanted to get BTM and SM:M2 done that evening, so we decided to go straight back to the other park.

Some night shots from WDS:

You can see the place was packed...

I hope they have longer opening hours for WDS someday, because it looks really beautiful at night, and you rarely get to see it.

So back to Disneyland...

We went straight to Frontierland. BTM had maybe a 20 minute queue, but the fastpasses were for something like 30 minutes later.... So we got some fastpasses (two each, I confess I kept the fastpasses my parents got to use with their internet tickets   ), and went to Phantom Manor.

The view from the porch was gorgeous. Unfortunately we didn't have much time there so I didn't take a picture, but I think I would have needed some serious work to capture the view properly. You could see the beautiful castle, all light up, the whole of Thunder Mesa of course (which just looks great at night), the incredible BTM covered in snow, and in the distance, the Swiss family Robinson treehouse, and the little lamps all around it. Probably one of my favourite views in the park.

Anyway, PM was great, they don't make rides like that anymore...

And after that, and a little bit of browsing in the shops, it was time to use our fastpasses. I love riding BTM by night, and with all the snow it was even more impressive! But very VERY cold... Even with my gloves, my hat, my scarf, and my big coat, there were bits when I was really freezing!! Of course, totally worth it    So we used our second set of FP straight away. Excellent!

At the end, when the trains come out of the tunnel back to Thunder Mesa, we noticed in the normal queue line a very solid, very frozen waterfall... It was so impressive we went into the queue just to take pictures! (and then walked out the entrance   )

It was now time for Discoveryland. Buzz had a little bit of a queue (20 minutes maybe, nothing major but too much for us   ) so it was straight to Space Mountain (10 minutes queue there :)  )

These are a bit dark, I had borrowed my husband's camera and I'm not too familiar with the various settings... But they give you an idea!

After a great ride in Space Mountain (though the music could have been a bit louder), it was closing time  :(  But as I said, my brother hadn't been here for over a year, so we took our time and admired the park, which by now we had almost to ourselves!

Next time I visit, this will be totally gone  :D/  :D
(//http://images52.fotki.com/v726/photos/8/1582018/8343873/P1010430-vi.jpg)

I think this is one of my favourite pictures from this trip:

One more for the road...

And we went back to our hotel

Some Christmas lights were still around in the DV, and not all the decorations were gone from the NYH (the next morning, we noticed that all the Christmas trees they had inside were gone, they really do work at night...)

In no time we were checked in, and resting in the room. They even took our bags to our room (great service  :) )

Some pictures from our room:

One of the two beds:

We had dinner in the Parkside Diner, personally I loved it. The buffet has a good selection, very tasty food, and it was fairly quiet when we went. We finished the evening in the bar; I think it's my favourite bar in any Disney hotel. Really beautiful place! And the mojitos were very nice, a great way to end the day!

Last day coming up soon!

WOW your trip report is making me feel very very jealous - if only I lived a 3 hour drive from DLP!
Your pictures are simply stunning, especially of the frozen waterfall. I love the funny one of your brother with the umbrella :)
Looking forward to reading the last installment, thanks for taking the time to post. Sounds like you had a wonderful trip with your family.

Thank you all!

I really love taking pictures, and Disneyland is my favourite subject... And it's real pleasure to share them with you all, I'm really touched by all your comments!

Here's part 1 of our last day, Monday.

For once I had no arguments to get people up early, my brother is as much of a fan as I am so not making the most of the EMH was never an option...  We got up and 7:00 and had (a very yummy) breakfast in the Manhattan restaraunt (practically deserted at that time...)

Next time I stay in the NYH I'd love to have diner here, it was a really beautiful restaurant!

After breakfast we finished packing our bags and went to check out. On the way, we met Goofy:

And we were on our way!

The DV was looking very quiet, and very cold...

Here's the waterfall on the side of the Rainforest Cafe!

Miguel feeling the cool morning air....

We were going back home by train, so we went to leave our bags in the station, and around 8:30 we were finally making our way into the park!

When we walked in, the police car was coming straight for us... I had never taken any of the Main Street vehicles before, so I couldn't turn down the opportunity!

It took us up to the Castle. The bridge, which on Sunday had been open (but the sides were covered) was now completely closed.

I also noticed the stage was covered:

I hadn't noticed the previous day that Tinkerbell was gone from the top of the Castle. Not the worst of the decorations for the castle, but personally I was delighted to see the Castle (at least its top) how it should be, or almost!

First destination was Fantasyland and Peter Pan. Without the bridge, we took the long way round by IASW. On the way, we noticed the water was working in the lava rocks, well, some water was bubbling, other bits were frozen solid...

From this side, you can barely see the MMP decorations...

This picture I really like:

Eventually we made it to Peter Pan...

It was of course extremely quiet so we could do it a couple of times without any queue at all... If only it could always be like that! (well, if it was always like that the place would go bankrupt and close down, which is the last thing I want, but still, you know what I mean... It's wonderful to do the rides you want without any queuing!)

We had a look around Fantasyland, it's not everyday it's so quiet and so white... before heading back towards Discoveryland

@never2old:
I have a question concerning your lunch at Walt's. The cheesecake you have eaten, is it the dessert of the moment, because I couldn't find the cake on the menu:

http://www.magicalkingdoms.com/dlp/menus/walts.html (http://www.magicalkingdoms.com/dlp/menus/walts.html)

Or did they change the menu?

They've changed the menu... It was definitely in the normal menu (and I think I've had it before). The salmon I had, or the ravioli my brother had for the main course, neither are in the magicalkingdoms menu...

Here's part 2 for Monday

For the last 40 minutes or so of the EMH,we went to Discoveryland. We had a couple of goes in Buzz, and a couple of goes in the Space Mountain... I wish all my Monday mornings could be like that!

Here are some pictures from Discoveryland

The ducks find some water!

By then it was after 10 so we started to make our way to Frontierland - we were both looking forward to seeing it covered in snow!

On the way we saw Minnie's train

They had built a little bridge, I guess to be able to access BTM, since by boat it was no longer possible:

Another of my favourite pictures:

It was now about 10:30, and the line for BTM was 5 minutes. Yes, 5 minutes. So we went straight in!

One more, now with daylight:

And the ride picture!

Well it was very cold, you know...

Anyway, here's the next update... Sorry it's taking so long!

It was now around 11:00 so it was time to go to the Studios again.

The seagulls were waiting for us

First stop, the information board to check out the waiting times. They were (almost) perfect:

TOT 5 minutes
RNRC 5 minutes
Crush 50 minutes

Yep, that is no typo. 50 minutes. Honestly    Miguel was a bit disappointed, he's still to go on Crush. But there was no way we were wasting 50 minutes in a queue line... So we went straight to TOT instead...

Happy sight...

You know I never noticed this statue before??

After TOT it was time for another couple of goes on RNRC...

I don't know if we were just unlucky, or they were only using one soundtrack, but every time we went on RNRC, we had the exact same soundtrack (the one with Nine Lives). A bit annoying, but the ride was still good, of course...

You can see how busy the Studios were (well, that's because everyone was queueing for Crush of course   )

Someday, that billboard will only be a bad memory... Well, at least I hope so  [-o< Because everything else is looking good!

Miguel outside the Studios gates (almost looks like the park is deserted...)

And we headed back to Disneyland... The Studios are getting  better, and I love some of their rides, but I still prefer  to spend as much time as I can in the most magical place on earth...

When we walked in we saw the queue for the train in Main Street station was, well, almost non-existant, and since my brother had never been on the train (poor thing, so young, so many things that he still needs to do   ) we went for it.

We ended up waiting maybe 10 minutes for the train, time spent of course taking pictures...

It looks like that none of the parks was very busy. Main Street looks also deserted in your pictures. Nevertheless a great trip report again. Waiting for the rest.

N20, may I ask you a question about Walt's. You have told me that they changed the menu. Do you know what the vegetarian option is now?

And do you know if Walt's is still open only on weekends?

Thanks a lot for your help.

For the main course it was ravioli, with some very nice looking veggies (that's what my brother had). For the starter it was the goat cheese I had, it was delicious.

I don't know about its opening times, I know they do close it some days during the low season, when we were there in October it was closed Monday and Tuesday (it was again open on Wednesday, not sure about Thursday and Friday)...

Once again, your report and the pics are great. I find the frozen waterfalls amazing... It MUST have been really cold...  :D The positive side of it: parks almost empty, which means less queues and more time for taking pictures!

Fantastic trip report, can't wait for the rest!

I hope it's that quiet when we go (I've already bought thermals for the cold!)

Thank you all  :D

It was definitely a great time to go. I'd definitely recommend January to everyone, if you don't mind the cold, it was really quiet! And the snow and ice, well, they were a bonus  :)  Last year I also went in January (a bit later, I think it was the last weekend in January, so I guess the same as you jeakat24  :) ), we didn't have any snow but no crowds either. It really makes a difference when you can get so many rides done without too much queuing!

Anyway, here's another chapter... Don't worry, the end is near

We took the train from Main Street, and went all the way around to Discoveryland. Everything looked really beautiful with all the snow, and if it hadn't been rather cold, I would have been tempted to go around twice

The Christmas snowmen were still out in Frontierland... Can you tell the fake snow from the real one?

Belle's village was coming down...

We got down on Discoveryland and walked back to Fantasyland and IASW. I love that ride, and the Christmas layout is still full of little new things I haven't discovered yet... I could have done it quite a few more times, but my brother, although he was happy to do it again, wouldn't have been too pleased about doing it more than once per day

We then decided to give Pirates another go before lunch, so we crossed Fantasyland towards Adventureland, taking of course plenty of pictures on the way...

I waited and waited for at least one of them to turn around, and nothing

The Sleeping Beauty little show was going on, hence the little crowd by the Castle.

And into Adventureland!

In the POTC queue line (not that there was any queuing, of course... we walked straight into the boat  :D )

The birds around Skull Rock
(//http://images53.fotki.com/v443/photos/8/1582018/8343873/P1010686-vi.jpg)

And you can hardly tell the difference, but when I took this picture, there was a (very little bit) of sunshine, and some blue skies were just visible between the grey clouds! And no, it did not last...

Prints in the snow...

And it was finally time to eat! We had booked Agrabah Cafe (one of my favourite restaurants, and Miguel's top restaurant in the parks, I think).

The food was delicious, plus with the cut in VAT the price was down (I think it was about 18 euro per person, instead of a little over 20 as it was last time). And the restaurant is beautiful! I saw it in every trip report (because I eat here everytime   ), everyone should try this place! Plus it always seems to be fairly quiet, it really makes for a pleasant break!

And here it is, the final chapter!

After a delicious lunch in the Agrabah Cafe (they might rethink their all-you-can-eat approach after my brother's visit... you would think he hadn't eaten in years!) and with fully recharged batteries, we decided to try the dark rides in Fantasyland. Great for digestion and we'd only done Peter Pan so far...

We went via Adventureland, I really couldn't get enough of it, with all the snow...

First in Fantasyland was Pinocchio, followed a few minutes later by Snow White. Pinocchio was great, Snow White was way too fast... It's maybe a way of reducing waiting times, but I really would love some more time to enjoy some of the scenes...

No visit to Disneyland is complete without a walk around the Castle Gallery...

We ended our visit to the Castle with a trip down to see the dragon... The bridge was closed, so we left via the dragon's cave. I really like coming out that way, you get a nice view of the Castle.

We had to leave the park around 5:30 to get our train, and we wanted to do some more shopping... So we decided to stop with the rides around 4:00 to have plenty of time for shopping. Frontierland is probably my favourite land in DLP, so we headed there. After getting some fastpasses for BTM, we went for one last visit to Phantom Manor and Boot Hill.

New addition to Frontierland
(//http://images112.fotki.com/v189/photos/8/1582018/8343873/P1010768-vi.jpg)

After one last go in BTM (with the fastpasses, we walked straight into the trains... brilliant!!), we went back towards Main Street for the shopping. The shops were pleasantly quiet, and warm! I have to say, after that last go in BTM, we were both feeling a bit chilly!

One more, on the way...

Around Disney & Co:

We finished shopping just in time to see the parade... It shows you how busy the park was, we went to see the parade just when it was arriving at we got a first row place on Main Street...

The Mary Poppins / Peter Pan float was not in, so instead Peter Pan & Co were coming down before the parade. Wendy was running away from Smee, Peter Pan was fighting Hook, and the pirates were trying to kidnap one of the CM in the red coats, the ones that make sure no one gets in the way of the parade... It was really funny!

Then it was time for the parade!

And it was time for us to go...  :(

We went to the station, got our bags, and waited for the train... Because of the weather it was delayed by about 40 minutes, which was annoying because we could have spent that much extra time in the parks, instead of waiting in a cold station    But never mind...

We had a wonderful, wonderful time. I don't think it could have gone any better. The parks were looking great with all the snow, we could get plenty done without any queues, and for me it was quite special to have first my parents with us for one day (particularly my dad, I never thought he would ever gp back to DLP), and then to spend some time alone with my little brother. Now that he's studying in Boston, I don't get to see him enough!!

So overall a real magical trip, and full of great memories!!

Thank you all for reading this, hope you enjoyed it!

Fantastic tripreport, although I do prefer when it is a bit more crowded. On the other, you can do all the rides without the long ques, which is nice too. I can also recommend Agrabah Cafe. Realy nice buffet restaurant and the price is very good.
