Bird gets rat's tale
Monday March 13, 2006

Brad Bird, whose The Incredibles won the best animated feature Oscar two years ago for Pixar, has been put in charge of the studio's latest film, Ratatouille.

The film, which centres on a skinny mouse who lives in a fancy Parisian restaurant run by a famous but eccentric chef, will be Pixar's eighth animated feature but only the first to be actually owned solely by Pixar. Former hits such as Toy Story and Finding Nemo were developed under a shared costs and profits deal with Disney.

The deal was confirmed last Friday at a meeting of Disney shareholders in Anaheim, California, ahead of the firm's acquisition of Pixar. Disney execs were also treated to an early peek at Ratatouille, featuring fully rendered computer-animated characters.

The story of Ratatouille, which is due to hit screens in June 2007, is being developed by Jan Pinkava, an Oscar-winning short-film director in his own right for 1997's Geri's Game, about an elderly man who passes the time by playing chess against himself in a large park.

Pixar's next release, Cars, is expected to hit cinemas this June and is the last film produced under Disney's deal with Pixar, under which the two companies split production costs and profits.

Pixar agreed in January to be acquired by the Walt Disney Co in a deal valued at $7.4bn (£4.25bn).

Teaser Trailer Description
from http://www.aintitcool.com (http://www.aintitcool.com)

"As you probably know from recent news reports, Brad Bird is directing RATATOUILLE for Pixar after Jan Pinkava (GERI'S GAME) stepped aside.

"The trailer opens with a big table of cheese with the waiter, in heavy French accent, pointing to different kinds of cheese, describing the differences of the cheeses. We never see his face, just his hand as it gestures at the tray, with the camera focusing on each different sample of cheese as he's talking about it. Then, he says this last cheese is rare and expensive, but exceptional. The camera pans over to see a gray rat caught like a deer in headlights, a piece of the expensive cheese in his mitts. The rat is of the cute rat varieties, not the evil R.O.U.S. type ("I don't think they exist.")

"The waiter shouts, the patrons scream and the rat screams himself and runs like a bat outta hell. He runs through the kitchen, knocking pots and pans over, cheese still in a death grip. He makes a leap off of a table, kitchen knives and other utensils falling around him and then it freeze-frames, like an action movie with the hero jumping over a cliff or away from a fireball or something.

"The rat introduces himself to us. The voice was familiar, but I couldn't place it. He says that he loves good food, and it's a good thing he lives in Paris because there's a lot of it... It's just hard to get.

"It cut to our hero grey rat walking about outside, near what looked like a sewage pipe or something. He tells us about his distaste for trash and love for real food. His dad yells at him from inside the pipe (we never see him), telling him he wouldn't be hungry all the time if he just ate trash like all the other rats. A chubby rat comes along eating something... dirty. It's gray-ish/black and it could be rotting oyster... or something. The chubby rat tells the gray rat that once you get paste the gag reflex, you'd be surprised what you can eat. The gray rat asks the chubby one what the hell he is eating. Mouth full, the chubby rat just kinda goes, "I don't know."

"Then it cuts back to the freeze frame of the gray rat in mid-leap and it reiterates how dangerous it is for a rat with a taste for real good food is in Paris. The film unfreezes and the rat hits the ground running, darting into a crack in the wooden wall, followed almost immediately by the falling cutlery imbedding itself into the wood around the hole.

"So, there you go. RATATOUILLE the trailer. It was funny, looked good... It didn't blow me away or anything, but the talent involved is undeniable."

The teaser trailer has hit the net!!!  :!:

Well, it's in French - but considering what the movie is about, it figures.  :D

Thanks for the link!

I don't actually like the look of it at the moment.  I don't like the design of the rat himself (Ratatouille?) and the whole thing just doesn't look very interesting.  I'm looking forward to the next teaser though - Pixar have got into a habit of doing bad first teasers recently, and with Brad Bird in charge now it should be good.

It would be cool if the whole film was in French... lol

Pixar's feature film page has been updated with what looks like the first Ratatouille poster: http://www.pixar.com/featurefilms/index.html (http://www.pixar.com/featurefilms/index.html) I can't find it bigger anywhere else yet...

How do Pixar never fail to create such brilliant logos for their films?

Have you seen this trailer????? Wow, the animation looks like a painting come to life! I know I sound biased but its fantastic. Look at this years computer animations, "over the hedge", "barnyard" and to some degree "cars", they still look computer generated, then look at this, it has a totaly different feel to it. Now I see why Glen Keane said no to reverting back to hand drawn animation for Repunzell!

It's definitely the most beautiful Pixar teaser ever.  Take a look back at the Cars teaser now you've seen the film - it's shocking! The animation and models are just like blocks.  So if ratatouille's teaser is this good, that bodes well.

I just found this early review on AICN (//http://www.aintitcool.com/node/30775) via Upcoming Pixar (//http://upcomingpixar.blogspot.com/2006/11/first-ratatouille-review.html).  Spoilers ahoy!

QuoteGot handed an invite for a "free movie screening" today at my work today (11-20), advertising a "major studio animated film coming next year" to be shown at a local theater tonight. Luckily, a gal I work with also is the assistant manager at said theater and had told me it was a Disney flick, but even she didn't know what movie it was. Obviously, Ratatouille sprang to mind, so I RSVP'd and my wife and I went to the theater (Regal Cascade 16 Cinemas in Vancouver, Washington).

After standing in line for almost two hours, we were checked thoroughly by security and ushered into the theater. Seating was about 400 people, with various sections of seating taped off for reserved seating. My wife and I were sitting halfway up the stadium seating at the end of an aisle. After the audience was seated, more people came in with notepads and recording devices and sat in the reserved seating scattered around the theater. The ushers then asked us to move to the middle of our aisle into the reserved seating to make room at the end of the aisle for more of these notepad carrying people, so we did. So we are seated dead center in the theater. Right below was about 5 more empty reserved seats. Then, a small group make their way down the aisle and sit right in front of us, and HOLY SHIT I recognize two of them immediately, Brad Bird and John Lasseter! I just about pissed my pants!

Anyway, the MC gets on the mic and says welcome, blah blah blah, we are about to see Walt Disney and Pixar's next animated film, Ratatouille! He announced that we were the second test audience to ever see the movie. The film will be in various states of completion, and to stay afterwards to fill out a survey. So the lights dim, and the movie begins.

Sorry if I spoil anything here. The movie was in a very incomplete state, with about a third of the movie being storyboards, a lot of gray-scale, then mostly incomplete animation. All the voice-work and sound effects were intact though. The few segments of nearly complete animation already looked fantastic. As far as the story goes, classic Pixar.

The main character is a rat named Remy who has a passion for good food unlike the rest of his trash-eating clan. Remy finds himself paired up with a garbage boy named Linguini in a famous Paris restaurant. After accidentally creating a soup masterpiece, the duo hide the fact that the genius behind the cooking is Remy. Throughout the course of the movie, they battle the jealous head-chef and Paris's top food critic, all the while dealing with Remy's struggle of abandoning his family to pursue his dreams of fine cooking.

The plot seems simple, but like any Brad Bird flick, it has a ton of heart and humor. Much of the action scenes were storyboards and gray-scale, but still promised to be dazzling when complete. The humor moments were hilarious and had the audience rolling. The voice acting was fantastic, with no recognizable A-list Hollywood stars to distract you from the characters, no singing in the edit that we saw either. The music was completely forgettable as it was just filler at this point I suspect. During the movie Lasseter would scribble down notes at various points.

The movie lasted a little over an hour and a half, and was greeted with resounding applause by the audience. When the lights came up I look in front of me to see John Lasseter reach over and shake Brad Bird's hand with a huge smile on his face. The small group quickly gets up and starts leaving the aisle. I worked up the courage to stand up and tap Brad Bird on the shoulder and tell him "awesome movie", he smiles very politely and responds with a "thank you".

Needless to say, my hand was shaking as I tried filling out the survey :)

Anyway, I cant wait to see the finished movie. Personally I liked it better than The Incredibles, the rough cut we saw tonight was right up there with Finding Nemo, my personal Pixar favorite.

Still in awe,

The Chemist

Another spoiler, this time for some new characters just revealed via a piece of merchandise on Amazon:

There's Remy (or Remi) in the middle, then the "fat orange rat" and possible Remy's father.  Behind are two kitchen hands and Chef Auguste Gusteau.

This definitely doesn't look anything like Flushed Away now. :)

They're probably doing it because of the other film competition in summer, I mean, if you went up to some random person and said "would you rather go and see Ratatouille, the Simpsons Movie, Harry Potter or Pirates of the caribbean(Can't wait  )", Ratatouille would be the last film in their mind (no offence!). It's Disney/Pixar's way of getting more money at the box office!

Oh well sounds like another chicken little and we the boring English as no doubt we are seen by the British Board of Film Classification, do not need so many movies at one time.  I personally would say as ever ratatouille will be the 2nd movie for people to see if it came out in the summer.  Afterall by mid summer Pirates will be dying down a lot and the Potter.  Who hasn't got sick of David Ratcliffe running around with his wand and pointing it at some annoying person and the whole world is saved.  Even worse it will no doubt go on for a lotr type time scale bah.

As for the simpsons movie, as fun as it seems, it's just about 5 or 10 years too late really.

Bring on Ratatouille anyway, cannot wait but I agree bastards for giving us it so late  .

Hahaha.. yeah, if we put off the release of the film long enough we might never have to see it. :P Actually, I think even though some british people tend to dislike the french for no reason at all (just as some french very much dislike us for no reason at all - it goes two ways, lol), "frenchness" is very popular.  People like Paris, they like the language, the style, the culture... I'm really looking forward to seeing Pixar's take on it. :)

Ratatouille seems like a more October/Autumn film anyway, I should probably question why Disney always feel they *have* to release Pixar films in the summer.

If they keep doing 1 per year like this, they'll start to get too predictable and less like "events", like the late 90s Disney films...

I totaly agree Baloo. Anyway, Disney have always had a good run with their movies were released in October around half term.

Nights are drawing in, the movie is more of an event, than being just another movie as they are in the summer.

And still in time for Xmas presents as a spin off!

Pixar are such a great company lets just pray that another company are not making a movie about a Rat. has anyone else noticed that when a Disney or Pixar movie comes out company sometimes produce a film with a Similar theme.Like Finding Nemo - Shark Tale
                               The Wild       - Madagascar
                               A Bugs Life - Antz

Ratatouille is already getting some pretty great reviews (especially compared to POTC3).  Check out Rotten Tomatoes (//http://uk.rottentomatoes.com/m/ratatouille/) - only 12 reviews counted at the moment, but 100% fresh so far!  Here's a few clips:

"The entire produc-tion is a captivating visual delight, as the fluid shifts between human and rodent perspective, and the camera's sensitivity to different gradations of light and color, are nothing short of stunning. As an impossibly romantic valentine to the City of Lights, pic could give both the recent "Paris, je t'aime" and the forthcoming "2 Days in Paris" a run for their money."
- Variety

"Yes, there's something in the kitchen for everyone in "Ratatouille," so the Mouse House should clear a wing in its hall of fame for Cousin Rat. "Ratatouille" might not reach the international boxoffice heights of "The Incredibles" -- then again, maybe it will -- but the film does rep another huge leap in CGI technique and imagination by the Pixar folks."
"Cartoon food certainly has come a long way from the spaghetti-by-candlelight scene in Walt Disney's "Lady and the Tramp." In Bird's kitchen, sauces steam and bubble over brilliant flames, red wine shimmers in crystal glasses, vegetables slice, grate and chop in a frenzy of tiny flying objects, and the camera and cooks are in constant motion in a choreographed ballet with swift, tuxedoed waiters. Everything is so realistic in its textures, colors and smells -- yes, you'll swear you can smell the food -- that the next time you switch on the Food Channel will bring disappointment: It doesn't look like Gusteau's!"
- Hollywood Reporter

And another:

"Moriarty Cooks Up His Review Of RATATOUILLE!
Sorry. I swear to god the headline will be the only example of bad cooking references in this whole review. You'll get hit with enough of them as the positive reviews for this film keep pouring in over the next two weeks.
And believe me... the vast majority of the reviews for this one are going to be glowing. Over the moon. Madly in love. And the film deserves all of that and more."
- AICN (//http://www.aintitcool.com/node/33087)

Go Pixar, go!!

Yesterday June 30th a major Ratatouille movie premiere and party happen in Paris! After all, the whole movie take place in Paris, so there was good reasons to set that event in the french capital.

Of course the usual local VIP were there, but what is more unusual is the fact that all the major "heads" of the Walt Disney company were there: not only John Lasseter and Brad Bird, of course, but even Bob Iger, Dick Cook, Brad Lewis, Ed Catmull and the composer Michael Giacchino!

the full photographic report of it is on disney and more.

Ouch. (Link for previous Pixar openings (//http://www.boxofficemojo.com/showdowns/chart/?id=vs-pixar.htm))

Edit: Although having said that, it's still twice Meet the Robinsons' opening.

Proves that they should have waited until later in the year to release it.  Either way, I'd much prefer Pixar make a critically acclaimed film that doesn't rake in billions rather than a total cr*p-fest like Shrek...

By the way - UK now has to wait until 12th October, with 5th October now the date for London previews...

A Short Review of The Movie:

This morning i've been to a preview of the movie: Ratatouille.

It started with the teaser trailer of Wall-E. (the same as the one that's online) Although the graphics look very nice, and Wall-E rather cute, my first thought that came in mind when i saw this teaser on the internet was: Robots? We've already had a movie about Robots. And seeing the little robot Wall-E appear, he reminded me a lot of the Robot in the movie Short Circuit. So to be honest, i wasn't sure if that would be a succes.
Ok, back to this morning..
The teaser appeared and everyone seemed to be very enthousiastic when Wall-E the robot appeared on the screen! Which really surprised me!
So hopefully my first opinion that i got while watching it online, will be very wrong and the movie will be just as a succes as the short teaser seemed to be..

Then the short Pixar movie 'Lifted' started. This short movie is just...great! It's so funny and really makes you laugh. I won't tell you too much, because that will spoil the fun! Here is a picture of this short movie:

And then "Ratatouille" began! It's a great movie!! The computergraphics are really beautiful, and very impressive. It looks more real than all the other pixar movies. Everything is so detailed and so perfect (look at the little hairs on the ears of the rats for example, or just the backgrounds during the scenes. And the chasing scene through Paris is very well done!It makes you really feel as if you're in Paris.
The story is very nice, and there are lots of funny moments.
Everyone seemed to really enjoy the movie, people were laughing a lot.
Also the end titles are nice to look at.

Hopefully not everyone would like to have a rat as a pet now (they look very adorable in the movie), as that also happened during finding nemo with the clownfish....

So, for me this was a very nice movie to see. And i'm sure it will be another success.  :D

Been there and i surely loved it!! The animation is surely the best there is at the moment! The Paris skyline, the water reflections and the hairs of the rats are so impressive.
The storyline is predictable, but that isn't boring at all and has some great little moral in it.
It's surely a must see for the fans. They deserve a Oscar for it, this is the new standard for Animation cinema!!

Post by: WDI1992 on August 07, 2007, 06:30:30 PM
Ratatouille was very good in my opinion, it's a great family film, telling a fun and entertaining storyline, nice surprises, it's humoristic and romantic, and the graphics are very very well done. Every scene seems very cosy and you just want to be there... the characters are cute and very 'Disney typical' and it seems to get everyones attention, young or old, everybody seems to like the film. It's not humor and laughing constantly during the film but I think it's nicely done and definately worth watching! It just makes your evening fun and entertaining...  what is pure humor and constant laughing on the other hand, is the shortfilm, Pixar's 'Lifted'... it's shown before the main movie begins and it is Hy-ste-ri-cal! I couldn't contain myself, I wish it lasted longer   great great and great!
So, conclusion; go and see Ratatouille  :!:

Quote from: "Jorien"Hopefully not everyone would like to have a rat as a pet now (they look very adorable in the movie), as that also happened during finding nemo with the clownfish....

I know what you mean :P We bought two goldfish after Finding Nemo and called one Nemo and the other Dory

It's great to hear that the movie is getting so many positive reviews :D If only it was rleseased here in the UK :(  Unfortunately I'll have to watch it when it comes out on DVD though because I don't like cinemas

QuoteBuena Vista Home Entertainment has revealed that they are currently planning to release Pixar's 'Ratatouille' on Blu-ray this November. While no exact date has been set, it has been expected for many weeks that it would arrive on the same day as two other Pixar Blu-ray releases - 'Cars' and 'Pixar Short Film Collection'. 'Ratatouille' will be presented in 2.39:1 1080p with 24-bit 5.1 PCM.

Extras on 'Ratatouille' include an exclusive short (presumably, not on the 'Short Film Collection') 'Your Friend the Rat', deleted scenes, and a documentary with Brad Bird. Exclusive to the Blu-ray release are Gusteau's Gourmet Game and Cine-Explore (behind the scenes feature).

This is the US release. Hopefully this will be region free (Disney films usually are region free on Blu Ray).

cant wait to se it! probably be a while yet though! it looks like it could quite possibly be the best pixar/disney yet, but having said that, these movie guys can make anything look gould in a 30 second trailer!  and as for the pet rat thing.. we used to have 7 of them and they were the best pets ever! would still have them now but my mum has really bad asthma and the oil in their skin makes it worse! (not that this is off subject by any stretch of the imagination ;-) sorry mods!)

The UK premiere was yesterday in Leicester Square, a quick video here with all the 'incredible' stars... lol... (the most exciting thing is seeing Emile dancing around in London, I wonder how he got there?) Apparently they had some kind of French market and gave away Ratatouille pastries to guests:

Disney seem to be doing a great job with advertising, lots on TV, cinemas, in print. I've seen a nice cinema policy ad ("turn your phone off.." etc) like they did for Meet the Robinsons and the film has partnered with Nissan too, it's quite funny: http://visit4info.com/details.cfm?adid=50238 (http://visit4info.com/details.cfm?adid=50238)

QuoteFilm triggers rat craze in France

It may not have featured at Paris Fashion Week, but in France there's one must-have item this season: a rat.
Ratatouille - an American animated film about a French rodent with lofty aspirations - has prompted a spike in rat sales across the country.

"Since the film came out in August, there has been a real fashion for rats," said Gerald Moreau, vice president of rat support group APRAC.

"There's no doubt it has changed the perception of rats," he told the BBC.

"Before rats were seen as disgusting, but now people see them as intelligent, cute, social animals."

Since the film's French release, the number of visitors to Mr Moreau's l'Association de Promotion du Rat comme Animal de Compagnie (APRAC) has increased eightfold, from 50 hits per hour to more than 800, he said.

The sale of rat accessories from the site, meanwhile, has leapt by 40%.

Well, having seen it just, I have to say, its fantastic. I really cant believe how far computer animation has come since Toy Story. Its like an oil painting come to life. On top of this, a witty and enaging story. Great film, go see it as soon as you can!

I saw it on saturday in digital and it was absolutely stunning. I completely agree with the statement penfold12 made about it being like an oil painting coming to life. Everything looked so realistic but with a tiny cartoonish slant. It was a great story with just the right amount of amusing moments. Some of the kids in the audience got really emotionally attached to the characters quickly too, only a good Disney movie can do that.

Absolutely superb, 4.5/5

I saw Ratatouille yesterday! :D It was absolutely superb! I loved every second of it - One of my favourite Disney Pixar movies. I didn't find it  very funny (I only laughed once), but it's not a comedy, and it doesn't need to be funny

I thought the storyline was great, it was very original, and the animation was just brilliant! It was all very detailed and some scenes looked real  I would definitely recommend this movie to everybody - It's my favourite movie of the yaer, and it's made me think differently about rats :P
Title:
Post by: Anthony on October 15, 2007, 10:31:45 PM
The film took £4.8m ($9.8m)in the UK over the opening weekend according to this article (//http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117974042.html?categoryId=13&cs=1). If my "research" is correct (it's very hard to find UK box office...), this is almost twice the amount Cars took in its opening weekend. Although that was up against Dead Man's Chest.

Disney really should have released it in the US this month too.
Title:
Post by: penfold12 on October 15, 2007, 11:31:57 PM
Internationally it is the 3rd highest box office for a Pixar Film. So much for all those bad reports about Disney paying too much for Pixar and their brand being in trouble. Its just about timing I think. As you say Baloo, too many films in the summer, this has replaced the Disney 2D release slot of old. Then they moved that to the summer and box office began to drop...
Title:
Post by: Grumpphil on October 21, 2007, 06:09:23 PM
I think the autumn half term is always going to be a much better release date than the summer holidays as people are more likely to go to the cinema when the weather is bad.

I saw it yesterday and was obviously impressed with the quality.  I would have prefered more laughs - there aren't really any big ones until near the end.  As RnRCj says it isn't a comedy so it can't really be compared to Toy Story and won't be on my favourites list.  Having said that it is very good and would be a must see even if the animation wasn't so incredible.

Saw the trailer for Enchanted too - can't wait for that one.

More rat news ! :P

Quote(//http://www.distantcreations.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/nrat128.jpg)

Rats have never been so popular. Pet stores say they have been inundated with requests for the rodents after the success of the Disney film Ratatouille.

The animation, which features a loveable French rat with a passion for cooking, has turned the rat from a hated pest to the most popular pet of the year. Pets at Home said sales of rats in the half-term holiday soared by 50 per cent in its stores.

He was played by Jamie Oliver in the UK version, bizarrely... He did he a good job with those few lines though, just as Jeremy Clarkson was well cast as Lightning McQueen's sleazy agent (better than the US original, I heard).

I wonder who they'll get to do a voice in Wall-E? :?

Has anyone bought the Ratatouille soundtrack? It's mostly "score-only" music, by that I mean not that great to listen to on its own (apart from the Ratatouille Theme and End Creditouilles), but the song Le Festin is loooovely. :D It'd make for a good song to use at DLRP, somewhere.

Reminder- the DVD is out on Monday here, though don't expect much from the 2-Discs. Looks like we're just getting the bonus disc that some US shops got, so it's pad-o-rama with limpy 2-minute clips.

And another example of Disney milking us for money -- the Pixar Shorts Vol.1 DVD is for some reason only available with Ratatouille over here. So if you want it now (I guess they might release it on it's own later) then make sure you buy the double pack I suppose...

It's being advertised on TV quite a bit, though the ads seem to be more for the burp joke crowd...

Rémy just picked up the BAFTA for Best Animated Film tonight! Brad Lewis the producer was there, very short speech. It was up against Shrek 3 and The Simpsons Movie. Bad year eh.

^^ I'm getting pretty jealous about all these Blu Ray players now! Disney are hyping it on every disc. It's won the format race before it's even started, surely?

Anyway, got my old-fashioned DVD yesterday and the extras are actually quite nice, though it really misses a commentary. Better than Cars at least. The only really annoying thing is that the Pixar Shorts version comes in a 3disc cardboard case thing, so if you're a nut like me it won't match the rest of your 50 odd Disney films. ](*,)

Have you seen the deleted scenes? It's crazy how much the film changed when Brad got in there. Seems like they didn't figure out the trick with Remy pulling Linguini's hair until very late.

Today I purchased it on DVD and Blu-ray (build both format collections then :P ). The DVD came with a film cell (love it) and I got the Pixar shorts in the blu-ray boxset. I only got to watch a few of the extras on the blu-ray disc and I have to say they are really entertaining which is odd for extra features.

Has anyone else watched the ad at the beginning of the disc for Sleeping Beauty's 2008 release? DVD and Blu-ray, awesomes.

Sorry, went a bit off topic there. I actually cheered when they announced Ratatouille as the Best animated film at the BAFTAs, but tbh it didn't have any competition.

I have always enjoyed the Disney films, and I love Pixar, however Ratatouille just didn't quite make the grade for me.

The animation was beautiful, the story was pleasant the cast were good and the music was nice.

It just wasn't as funny as The Incredibles, Monster's Inc or Toy Story (1 & 2)

It was clever, and I was blown away by the style and the animation. (having kept rats I was amazed by the realism) yet the film just lacked a "je ne sais quoi".

Pity.

Ratatouille is my favorite Pixar movie together with Toy Story 2. Glad they won the Oscar.

The Rat also has two nominations at the Empire Awards (next Sunday): Best Comedy and Best Film. http://www.empireonline.com/awards2008/nominations/ (http://www.empireonline.com/awards2008/nominations/)

It might actually have a chance at best film, but Bourne Ultimatum and Jesse James were also very popular with them.

Jesse James was like the best film ever made, so Ratatouille has some hot competition in that award ceremony.
