Title: Why cant I stay away?
Post by: RockNRoller on October 12, 2012, 02:17:16 PM
Ok so this year for the first time in 14 years my wife and I wont be going to Disney. In an effort not to depress myself I tried staying away from the forum, avoiding all our old Disney movies, even put my books in a box in the loft. That lasted about 2 months, I just cant stay away and although I still cant go I shall be living the dream through all the excellent trip reports.
But why cant I stay away?

I can only say because its the only place I know where the outside world gets forgotten, no news, no bills etc I cant stop smiling and Im a big kid again. My names Simon and Im a Disneyaholic. That feels good to get off my chest..

So why cant you stay away?

I hear you, it's exactly the reason why we love it so much. It's not so much about the rides and the shops and such (even though they're all amazing), but the true magic lies in its ability to make one forget completely about the real world and let them wander off into a new one. It literally feels like entering a whole new universe... One where everybody's happy and there are no worries, no bills to pay, no news that can set you off for the entire day, etc. Not even the bad weather or being ill can make it an, even remotely, bad day.  :D

I approve these comments.....(oeps all into the american presidential election  :P )

It's just that magical spirit and great eye for the Disney details which keep me attracted to the parc

hi simon, i agree i am a disneyaholic too! i think thats why i cant stay away from the forum to be honest because i know i can come on here talk disney and know that the person/people reading are truely interested in what i have to say and are all well and ready for a good chit chat about nothing other than disney.
Plus this year has been a really tough one for me, the forum has literly been somewhere i could come and know that i could read something that would put a smile (even just a little one) on my face, i will admit to staying away a little after my last visit because i was fIrmly in post disney trip blues and being on the forum just put me even more into that, but once they had lessened i was back and reading (more like lurking) but once again i'm posting and answering questions again.... and well it feels good to be back again =]

me too, I also had a tough time following my husbands death and didn't think I could go back to DLP without him, but all the family went and although I was a bit depressed, I felt going back to DLP was the right place for me to be, it was like having a big hug just when you needed it. This year was my 2nd visit to DLP without him.
I always feel as if a weight has been lifted off the shoulders the moment you walk through the gates, all the outside world forgotten no deadlines to meet, just forget and enjoy. Definitely the happiest place to be. I have to say that joining the forum after years of lurking has been good for the soul. :minnie:

I know how everybody feel's we have been to Disney every year for the last 7 years. This year however we have not been able to go and we have all been really depressed about it. Looking at all the video's and pictures people have posted only added to the disapointment. With 2 kid's it is not the cheapest place to go to so when they had the offer on of 2 free day's and night's we booked. We are going Feb next year not an ideal time with the weather but who cares. We are not going to tell the kid's (aged 6 & 10) until the morning we are going. My husband and I are so excited the kid's are longing to go back so the look on their faces when we tell them really will be a picture to treasure. No other park's can compete with The Disney Experience. As soon as you get there you have a great big grin the whole time. So many great memories for the kid's to treasure.

Awww I love this topic , its so true what everyone is saying. A trip to Disney is like a big cuddle , or a bubble of happiness for the time your there. I love every single ride and go mad for them but its just the atmosphere and being there really. The smells and the sounds , , it must be the only time Im excited to get up for breakfast at the crack of dawn! Going in 3 weeks for whats prob going to be my last trip in a while , getting married in september so need to save! ( Guess where my honeymoon is starting though?!) and already Im depressed at the thought of this trip being over!

I know I started this thread but Im loving the replies. Walt was right when he described it as the happiest place on earth. I love how much of it you can take with you when you leave. I do a lot of driving for work and have the 15th anniversary CD in the car at all times. Doesnt matter the day Ive had that CD on the way home makes me grin every time

Sooo true, the only time I become a 'morning person' is at DLP. I'm happy to read that i'm not alone in calling it my 2nd home! Even tho ive only had 3 trips there, it feels so 'right'.

I know exactly what you mean

we went for our first visit (said we would go just the once) in 2004 and then went every year sometimes twice until 2008, then as happens life through things at us and I thought we wont go again our son was growing up so it seemed that was it

But then darling son who's now 16 said lets go back ans so we have just been a=back for Halloween and it was like going home as soon as we stepped through the gates all my troubles left me and and I felt the disney cuddle

hopefully we will be back next year I think for Christmas

I absolutely agree with all of these posts! Any DLP music helps to keep my cravings down and get me even more excited for my next trip :) I have even got to the point now where all of my home accessories are Disney-related - I have a Mickey telephone, lots of ornaments and that sort of thing, all of my kitchen stuff is Disney, all of my cushions are Disney...! It just makes me feel happy :D

For me Disneyland Paris does feel like home, everytime we go back to the Cheyenne I feel like it is where we are meant to be and the rest of the year has sort of lead up to it, and then when we walk through Fantasia Gardens and see the park I start crying cos I'm so happy and overwhelmed to be home! Only my boyfriend and you guys seem to understand this though - if I ever told friends or family they wouldn't get it, they already don't understand why we go back to DLP every year   Some people visit Spain or somewhere every year though, because they have a place they particularly like, so I don't see how going back to Disney is any different?

Im with you on this one, every year my friends give me the "Youre going again?" speech and yet every year they go to the same place and lie on the same beach for 2 weeks.  3 years ago we took a couple of non believers with us and now our next visit (no:14) will be their 3rd. Its a contagious place

Yess exactly! How is it socially acceptable to return to the same place every year because you like the hotel and the food and the beach, but going back to Disneyland every year is weird? People say "You only went last year!", I think they reckon that because we've been on all the rides and stuff there isn't anything else for us to see, but I always find new things to do there, and part of the fun is going back home and seeing all the rides and places that I already love!

On a similar topic - does anyone find that they get slightly possessive/defensive of DLP? I am embarrassed to admit it but I do    If I see on Facebook that someone I know has been I think "B-b-but they don't like it like I do, they won't appreciate it!" and when I saw the X-Factor contestants had gone I was weirdly disappointed. My cousin visited and came back saying it was boring and that there are "no rides, only restaurants" and I spent quite some time defending it to him, I can't understand how anyone can say there are no rides?! I feel like we're the only ones that 'get' DLP

Im very defensive, 2 years ago my sister in law nearly cancelled her first trip because a friend who had been once said the food was expensive. Long heated  discussion about why Disney is more than just food. Can you believe she didnt ask my advice about anything    :-"

Or when people go and cant remember the names of the rides eg " that rollercoaster" " that pirate one" Its like " go away you dont deserve to be there if you dont share the passion!"   Or my latest one , another girl in work went a few months ago and was telling me about the new firework display when the park closes??? Its called Dreams!! And today another collegue was asking about my hol and said she cant afford Florida so she might have to settle for DLP! Grrrr

Oh no! Definitely not worth cancelling a trip over - plus I think the food is part of the fun of it, where else can you get a burger shaped like Mickey Mouse?! I'm glad you persuaded her not to cancel

Yesss, that bugs me too, I know exactly what you mean! "The pirate one from the film" HOW DARE THEY   I hate when people say they have to settle for DLP, I used to work at the Disney Store and whenever I got into conversations about the parks with guests, they would always say "Ugh you don't want to be wasting your time there, spend your money somewhere worthwhile and go to WDW", it was quite hard to explain to people that DLP is always my first choice, they don't seem to understand - that's why I'm so glad everyone on here 'gets' it! :D

ooh that really irks me when people tell me I have 'got' to go to WDW instead of DLRP my answer is usually just a look and a 'what do you know know' kind of response especially when some of the people who have given me that response haven't set foot in a Disney park in their life! something else that really rubs me the wrong way is when I say I am going back to Disney and they say something along the lines of 'ooooh the one in Florida?' and when I say no the Paris one they just give me a strange look..... and when people compare the two when they have never been to both saying Florida is better than the Paris one when really they don't know if they are or not (I with hold judgement, I have not been to both and will not compare them until I have been besides I will be forever bias to DLRP's side I have grown up going there it will always be the best :P )

ok rant over....

Swipatron I feel the exact same! And I too have yet to visit WDW so I can't exactly make the comparison for definite...but somehow I just KNOW that DLP is the park for me and that the others wouldn't quite feel the same, even if they were absolutely amazing. I think it's a nostalgia thing about DLP?

And WDW seems so very big that I worry I wouldn't quite get the same vibe from it, like DLP has quiet times and stuff, I just imagine WDW as being busy all the time and being a bit too full-on. Although I suppose it's unfair for me to be judging it without having been :)

I join you! Whilst I def wouldnt turn down a trip to WDW ( euromillions maybe??) it just dosent hold the same appeal. Im like you , I grew up going to DLP so its always going to hold a special place for me! And the french element just adds a touch of extra magic and class I think. Here is a good one I got today. " How was Eurodisney Aisling? Does that one have the Harry Potter ride like the one in Florida?"  Oh. Mon. Dieu. Speechless I was!

I'll join you too, Ive never been to any other park, my love of Disney parks really started when they opened DLRP, Ive watched the park grow over the last 20 years and as it has so has my appreciation of it. I know I'll never get to America and I dont care. Its hard to explain but it feels like Ive been part of the park as its grown up and I look forwards to being part of it as it continues to grow.

For me it's that I don't have to worry. I'm a carer for my husband and have 2 kids so I spend all my time worrying about them. When we go away I panic 'will there be enough to do? Will the food be ok? What will the hotel be like?' I don't need to worry about that when we go Disneyland. As odd as it may sound I feel safe there. I think as well I spend all year being such a grown up and in charge of everything, this is where I can go and be a kid :) SO excited about our trip, already crying whenever the ad comes on, may need to be sedated when we actually go lol

This is exactly how I feel! Like it's a place where nothing bad could happen and no-one could get hurt or feel upset? I think the world is a wonderful place but at the same time it can be scary and sad and when I watch Disney films or go to Disneyland Paris I just feel safe and like none of the sad or scary things can affect me for a while

I have to agree with you all. Sick of people asking WHY are you going AGAIN this year but how could they possibly begin to understand if they have never been themselves. I hate the real world, its a horrible place to live in but DLRP leaves all the bad behind at the gates and makes everything fun and magical. I cant imagine going anywhere else anymore. Our daughter is only 5 and its a second home for her now. She has stayed in almost all the hotels, so its a new adventure everytime before you even enter the parks.

Why can`t I stay away?? I don`t know! Just everytime I get back, I start thinking, when could be next time...
And some people don`t understand, why we keep going back, like others said.
I don`t have to worry, most of the time I don`t even read newspaper or watch TV.

Having worked at WDW in the 90s, I think DLRP blows Orlando away. Even the Studios is fun for me and my family. I don't need 4 parks that are spread so far from each other and even within. Give me the beauty of Fantasyland that WDW is now trying to copy. There can be no better castle than that of DLRP.

I totally agree - some people just dont get it...!
A few weeks before we went for the first time (and as of yet only time) - I was talking to some colleagues about finally going there after waiting so long. One of them asked how long we were going for, and I said Mon-Fri... Her response was "But what are you gonna do there for such a long time???"..........
I was worried we didn't HAVE enough time! And rightly so! I could have easily stayed for another week... :)
But oh no, she found it sooo boring there, and they were just there for 2 days when she went!!
I couldn't believe how protective I felt about it - and this was before even having been there at all...!!
I am ACHING to go again, and I am chuffed to bits to be getting my Disney-fix in this forum until we go again! :)

I forgot to mention that DLRP has the best BTM railroad, too. That last section of track that goes fast, downhill, and in a dark tunnel under the water is a big surprise for first time riders. I've never seen so many people with such looks of joy after a ride. Even more surprising to me is the ages of the riders. There are far many older riders on BTM than I've ever seen in the States.

I agree with you all too. It's such a magical place! I'm another one of you that's grown up going there and find the place beautifully nostalgic. I honestly don't think I could tire of it there. And yes, I wouldn't turn down a trip to WDW etc and may well visit it at some point in the future - however I don't long for it or anything as for me Disney is Disney Paris.

And I must admit that seeing my daughter (who's 6) becoming enchanted with the place (like her Mum lol) was just priceless...best memories ever :D roll on June 2nd!!

Hi we have been to dlrp 6 times in the last five years just got back from 5days at Davey crocketts it was our second favorite trip dont think you can ever top your first trip.
On return my wife told me and the kids that we are going to give it a miss next year as it my fortyth b'day we're going abroad beach holiday;( least to say we were gutted!!!.
I wanted to go for my birthday and do 40 rides at forty.is it just me or does the magic start as soon as you book dlrp trip?
little does my lovely wife know but me and the kids have started a secret club and have a secret pot that we are putting any spare change in the kids have started sorting toys to sell on ebay and the other day their grandma asked if they wanted an ice cream to wich they said could we have the money instead lol bless em.
don't tell the wife but we are going next year and the way the kids are saving it could be in the Disneyland Hotel lol.
It would appear we have got it bad I have to agree its such a magical place it truly is a place where you can stop the world and get of for a while and be totally yourself love it :)

Did that for my 40th, its a fantastic idea, takes some doing though

Funniest part of the whole trip was when we told people where we were going for my 40th and the response was "Oh I thought you would go somewhere special" . Thing is for all of us that go time and time again it is special.
Merlin last year we couldnt go because my wife is back at college and we jus couldnt fit it in, we even looked at doing a day trip. Hats off to you and your kids, good luck with the saving  =D>

I went into Tesco this week for euros for our trip, the girl on the desk asked "Going anywhere nice?" - "Disneyland Paris" says I. "Oh, have you been before?", "This will be our 45th time" - "WHAT?????" - "Yeah, wife and daughter are Disney fanatics, I just do the driving". Then picture me grinning like a cheshire cat as I'm walking back to the car.......... Yes, too bloody hard to stay away for too long :)

Hi, everyone! Ive been three times now and have booked our fourth trip next year March at hotel Cheyenne! (We've always stayed at the Santa Fe and I now feel kinda sad that I aint going to it again!) DLP is the one place in the world  that as soon as i get off the train im home! My girls too know all the ins and outs of the different lands and feel its their second home too. Theres nothing better that getting to the park during magic hours and when theres barely a person there and taking in Main Street all deserted, its beautiful.  Im 32 and cannot see myself going anywere else, maybe Ill try WDW one day but I dont think its ever gonna rival DLP.  I too have most of the films, albums and ornaments around the house! And my family find its odd that I keep going back, Ive tried to persuade them to go, my mum went last year with me and my girls, but my other family think its a waste of money! (outrageous!) But Its so true, you can leave your grown up self at your doorstep and slowly (or in my case, stupidly fast!) turn into a big kid on the way there! LOVE U DLP xxxx

Quote from: "geekyjo"Yess exactly!
Youre gonna love this one:
My Sister : So your going to Disney again, honestly
Me: Well youre just going on holiday to lie on a beach, isnt that what you did last year?
My Sister : Ah but its a totally different beach to last year

Lol! Love that!
My husband was leaving on a business trip to Switzerland this morning and I still had to discuss Disney with him before he went. Well, with the days passing so quick, its important to know which restaurant we're going to eat in....right? Oh and have a safe trip dear!

To keep this up to date, we couldnt go last year so are really looking forward to this years trip. Told my parents that we'd booked end of November and the conversation went like this
"But you didnt go last year"
"So"
"Well youve broken the chain so why bother going"

>:(  Why dont people get it???????

We're only going for our 3rd visit as a family and I feel that most people here wouldn't understand. I mean, for most people you go once and you have seen it all. We know it's not like that!
And really i'd rather save and spend the money going to DLP than going to some beach resort... both my parents and in laws live near the beach so I have that for "free" :).
And DLP is such a great escape! :)
