Hey, I've just found these photo's on a dutch forum with a description that Earl of Sandwich will be opened in [strike:kauep40f]late 2010[/strike:kauep40f] May 2011.

Very interesting.
I like the concept art. I think the building looks nice and every addition to DV is welcomed.
Just when things are looking quiet... whoa!
Perfect, perfect, perfect. Save me a seat on the first floor, that's going to be a great view!
Not that I needed any more incentive to go but an Earl of Sandwich would always seal the deal! The place is amazing.
That is a huge building! The Earl can't be short of a bob or two.
Looking good over in the Village!
Excellent news!
I think the building, although stylish, may be a bit massive and plate glass-ish for that spot, and a little Anyplace, Planet Earth. But then again, designing something that works in that environment couldn't have been easy. I mean honestly, try designing something that complements Cafe Mickey, the Rainforest Cafe and those enormous nondescript buildings behind it. So they did a pretty good job, really. And good news lunch-wise.
And I like that silver checkered pattern on the part of the building behind the plate glass.
Also, interesting to compare:

What do we all think about the lake being filled in?
Quote from: "pussinboots"What do we all think about the lake being filled in?
Depends what they fill it in with. I vote for those coloured plastic ball things they have in kids indoor play parks. Imagine the whole lake awash with coloured balls.
My second vote is for cheese.

I think Phantom247 heard it was going to be Starbucks coffee.
[strike:1k56lly1]Starbucks coffee ?!?! Why don't they just let the visitors urinate in the water...[/strike:1k56lly1]
No I can't. I promised I wouldn't 8)
While I always thought the Earl of Sandwich was terribly overrated, I think this could be a nice addition, and that building will have a lovely view. Shame it means getting rid of the water.
Fantastic, Fantastic news! The plans and concepts for this look so good, even if it does sacrifice a bit of lake. I cannot wait for this to open, I really do think that Disney Village is going to become somewhere unrecognisable over the next few years; somewhere we can be very proud of! :)
Quote from: "pussinboots"What do we all think about the lake being filled in?
Lucky it's only that tiny corner.
Coffee jokes aside, how are they going to build this? I presume that corner is actually being filled in and not just built over (using stilts or whatever). If so, how do you accomplish that? Do they basically seal it off and start filling it in?
It's going to be a much bigger project than sticking some reclaimed wood on a Frank Gehry block.
Quote from: "pussinboots"Anthony's prophesying
If only the same could happen with Soarin'.
Will "Earl of Sandwich" run the restaurant or will Euro Disney SCA or "Groupe Flo" run it under a license agreement?

I would imagine they would build a retaining wall to hold the water back and then back fill. They would have to put a temporary structure up to allow the area to be dried out.
However, they may use stilts, as they will only have to ram some into the ground with a machine, rather than having to fill everywhere.
Whatever they do, it will be a big job.
It's probably not that deep anyway, in the grand tradition of Disney's lakes.
i really like the concept, it has style and fit perfectly into this spot...
can´t wait to see the first construction pics....
Wondering how they'd fill in that bit of water I was forgetting they've done it before, both with Rainforest Cafe and McDonalds. The latter in particular was a very big job, since the marina here used to be much bigger.
Here's a topical photo I just stumbled upon:
Much different these days: http://www.photosmagiques.com/gallery/d ... C03200.JPG (http://www.photosmagiques.com/gallery/disney_village/rainforest_cafe/DSC03200.JPG)
The only thing I'm not sure of with the concepts is that large back wall. I presume it's there for a reason, but it's still just... there. Looking a bit like a dirty tiled bathroom wall.
Look at the concept with the view from next to Café Mickey and the huge dead space to the right of Earl. I can't imagine they want to keep that... Are they thinking that the Rainforest/Hurricanes building could be bulldozed and another building built to join right up with it? This wall seems to stick out more than it needs to.
Wow this looks promising - I hope they build this and keep on improving Disney Village so it becomes a place to continue the magic again, which it hasn't been for a while in my opinion with a couple of exceptions though.
The building is very good looking and the view should be amazing. Thumbs up from me :D/
:o What a stylish building!
I have to say though, I've never heard of Earl of Sandwich. What do they sell apart from sandwiches? And is the food there any good?
Well this is a step in the right direction! The building looks great and seems to fit with it's surroundings well. I've never eaten in an EOS so can't judge it's food yet, but I'm looking forward to trying it out in late 2010.
Now if only they could do something with the horrid white box behind it...
Quote from: "Masamune"I have to say though, I've never heard of Earl of Sandwich. What do they sell apart from sandwiches? And is the food there any good?
It's an American chain partnered with the actual Earl of Sandwich, who obviously wasn't rich enough so had to flog his name. More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_of_Sa ... taurant%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_of_Sandwich_%28restaurant%29)
Check the menu: http://www.earlofsandwichusa.com/food/ (http://www.earlofsandwichusa.com/food/)
From what I've read, the sandwiches are pretty good. Something that I'm interested to see if it'll translate to Europe are the prices - it's about $5.75 for a sandwich over there. Over here, DLP charges anything up to an insane €7 for a cheap bun with about 2 ingredients. If this opens with such realistic prices, I'll probably never buy lunch in the parks again...
Subway is pretty reasonably priced in Europe. I imagine Earl of Sandwich would want their European franchises outside of Disneyland Paris to compete with Subway, so a similar price level doesn't seem unrealistic. Moreover, they might realize that the McDonald's in Disney Village is doing such good business for a reason. Perhaps we're looking at the second affordable eatery on Disney property here...
I think this will go over big with the French, who do like to lunch.
It makes you wonder why Euro Disney (or, frankly, Disney) isn't taking cues. Surely they too are capable of some sort of formula that offers quality for a reasonable price. They could have their own brand, through some deal with a large Nestle-style company, and a strategically limited array of "good food fast" products available throughout the resort. You concoct some iced coffee drink that comes in a specially designed cup, some world famous yuppie treat biscotti cupcake something-or-other, you boast some nonsense about authentic-this and environmental-that and then sell it all in some designery Pret-a-Food-Court thing in Disney Village and you have a hit on your hands! No?
Which leads nicely on to another point: Where does this leave New York Style Sandwiches?
There's a big domino effect with all these upcoming projects.
Yes, exactly, which is what led me to fantasize in the first place. Those awful overpriced British Rail sandwiches... When you take a hard look at Disney's food offerings, it's really quite an anachronism, isn't it. Disney is still cooking like it's 1992, when there was nothing between a hamburger and a steak, coffee came in just one size and the idea of serving apple slices as an alternative to French fries would have still seemed ludicrous. (Still does to me.) Even US Disney hasn't quite made the leap into the smoothie era.
When will they learn to ask us about these things.
Anyway, isn't that whole side of Disney Village still regarded as on the chopping board?
^ What do you mean by that?
Again, this looks like a building that wont fit in with the bright colours of the village. But then again, King Ludwigs has managed to fit in...
This building will be a nice entrance to Village for guests using hotels, Café Mickey has a nice style to it, it's bold and frames the shopping side of the street, and at the moment there's a big plain wall on the other side, it looks unfinished. So hopefully this new focal point will create an imaginary 'arch' across the street with a clear image of what the Village is.
It's a shame it's another restaurant, but it's something different to what is on offer elsewhere in the resort, and it'll tie in nicely with the World of Disney at the other end. That side of the Village does look a little tatty now, although Starbucks is bringing a fresher feeling to it, this should top it off nicely and rejuvinate the dining side!
Quote from: "Martyn"^ What do you mean by that?

I was under the impression that the Disney Store side of Disney Village — the part under Gehry's candy cane canopy — is supposed to get a major overhaul at some point in the not-too-distant future. And it would make sense, considering how little money they're willing to invest there. The other side has, over the years, gotten a Rainforest Cafe with the jungle props that came with it, Ludwig's, Starbucks, whatever happened to Rock 'n' Roll America — lots of things. Over on the other side, it has yet to go beyond paint jobs. The Disney Store itself, the Disney Gallery, World of Toys and Hollywood Pictures haven't changed since 1994, nor have they been dusted much since then. One might conclude that they are holding off on investments for a reason.
Oh, and about those pictures Anthony posted; I actually think Gehry had a pretty interesting thing there. There's almost a Sydney Opera House vibe to that white fin-shaped building. It's just too bad it doesn't work as a Disney mall, and that they've never tried to make it work as one.
I know I always looked forword to going to the restaurant in Downtown Disney, the food was good and the price OK for what you get.Certainly a good alternative to the rest offered in DLP.
Any more news on this then?

LOL!!!!
What Anthony means is, if there's news, it will be posted right away here. :-)
And in the meantime, feel free to discuss or speculate on what we already know...
Will New York Style Sandwiches become an extension of the Sports Bar, something different, or just stay the same?

I wouldn't be surprised if they decide too extend the Sports Bar into the space of New York Style Sandwiches if Earl does arrive.
Extending the Sportsbar would be great, because it is always very difficult to get a table there. It's a nice place to get some drinks.
Anyone know how long construction for something like this would take? If they're going for a late 2010 opening date when would they have to start building it?
I think it gone past the time for them to open for a late 2010 opening as I guess there is loads of stuff that needed to be done before it gets built that haven't yet been done.
I believe it's supposed to open April 2011. :-)
Quote from: "Kristof"I believe it's supposed to open April 2011. :-)
So construction will start in summer? I thought that construction would start earlier and that EoS would open in fall or winter.
Just got back from a week at DLP last night ( :( )
Anyway, during the night on wednesday, constructions walls were erected around where the Carousel used to be (I say during the night because they weren't there when we left the Village at about 11pm, yet they were there when we went to the parks Thursday morning).
You can see behind the walls from the bridge, there's a couple of diggers and lots of large sacks of gravel, which could well be used for filling in the lake?
Just thought I'd share that with you...

That's brilliant news! I mean if construction really is starting now then it could be finished by the end of the year after all. Something good's coming out of 2010 after all!

This construction project is more exciting than Toy Story Playland :-) At least it will look good when it's finished.
So it will not be ready next week when we are there  .
Them photo's look as if they were taking on Thursday 28th. It was the Friday that I saw the Diggers & gravel.

Construction walls were down past weekend.
This building looks really ugly from the back, so I'm glad that something new will be built there. When EoS is ready it will be the most beautiful bulding in DV.
How odd. Maybe they were just repairing some groundwork? Did you look to see if they had infilled any of the lake?
Quote from: "Martyn"How odd. Maybe they were just repairing some groundwork? Did you look to see if they had infilled any of the lake?
No, nothing had changed. By the way, if you guys were referring to the big bags of sand in that second picture, those are actually used so that the fences don't fall over.
Maybe they have just repainted the banister.
I wouldn't have thought they'd do that if they'll be removing it in the near future.
QuoteBy the way, if you guys were referring to the big bags of sand in that second picture, those are actually used so that the fences don't fall over.
When I looked behind there, there were a couple of small diggers and large 'sacks' (the ones with the straps so fork lift trucks can move them) filled with gravel.
Earl of Sandwich is coming, no doubt about it.
At the roundabout at the end of "Avenue Paul Seramy", there is the enterance for the backstage area of the Village. They post their permits back there.
This is one of them:
Enterprise: Earl of Sandwich au Disneyland Paris
No Permis de construire: 077 111 09 00005
Proprietaire: Disneyland Resort Paris
Date: 21 octobre 2009

Superficie de terrain: 499m2
Superficie hors oevre nette: 587m2

I think that confirms the location and also gives an estimate about the size of the place.
Sorry for the missing accents, my keyboard isn't French-compliant :)
There's finally movement on site: fixed construction fences were being installed today:

Poor old Rainforest Cafe is right in the middle of 2 big construction projects!
I hope it doesn't get drowned by these new projects, I like the jungle exterior to RC!
This has just been uploaded on the Disney Central Plaza facebook page.

:)
Well, that makes it official, doesn't it! Really good news. Disney Village is finally becoming a worthwhile place with these additions.
It's wonderful to see that they're making expansions at the Village, for the same reason as said above this post
Finally a sign. Unfortunately it will take another year to see the restaurant open.
I'm loving Earl of Sandwich already.
A decent quality sign and a riff on Snow White's "The one that started it all" tagline. Great!
Does that say Spring 2011?
Yes, Spring/Printemps 2011. :)
It might be nice (not wonderful) that the village will have a new food outlet but will it draw more people to DLP...nope !
Quote from: "electricdreams"It might be nice (not wonderful) that the village will have a new food outlet but will it draw more people to DLP...nope !
What an odd thing to say. The fact that they clean the urine stains from Adventureland doesn't draw anyone to the resort either, but it still has to be done.
^ I don't think that the things we, as fans, love about DLP, will attract much people too. Europeans don't come back to DLP for the little details and the nostalgia of the park, more likely they'll be there when a new (very fast) ride opens or something...
Its nice to see DLP taking a leaf out of the US parks book and doing some really nice 'Coming soon' signs! :)
I think the public appreciate feeling like they are "in the know" about future projects! :D
An update for Early Of Sandwhich! Its all surrounded in fences and They've started digging up the Asphalt!

Wonderful, absolutely great to see this! :D
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET :D/ When is it going to be ready?
Wow, this is going to be huge. It will be very interesting to see the work in progress.
Its good to see the village getting some new blood aswell as a retailer selling a healthier option compared to the junk in DLP
Construction update for y'all.

Does anyone know if you can get to Disney Village from the Newport Bay via the McDonalds route or is that whole area sectioned off?
I would imagine its just the bridge thats closed. I see no reason for them to block off the pathway by McDonalds.

Nothing like subway. EoS has a place at the Marketplace in Downtown Disney at WDW. Personally I'm not a fan (I find the sandwiches to be a bit soggy cos of all the stuff they cram on them) but most people on WDWMagic rave about them
The food at Earl is simply amazing, when I lived in Orlando my friends and I would get cravings for the place... The Bread and everything is so tasty, I guess it depends on what you order. You will never look at Subway the same way again. Such a good addition to the Village.
Hey guys!
During the week, maybe Monday or Tuesday a crane popped up on site :) -

I have heard on another forum that the route from Newport Bay to the village is closed until next year due to this construction work, and you have to walk down the other side of the lake past the Sequoia Lodge?
Does anyone know if this is true?
When we were there we had to walk the long way around the lake but on our last day the path was opened up, but I believe this was to provide access to the events arena as there was a gaming tournament or something on that day :).
I phoned Disney this morning, they were unable to confirm if the pathway would be blocked during our stay in November....however, I found out that HNY was only an extra £20 for our 5 night stay (it was loads more when we originally booked) so we have upgraded! Whether the path is blocked or not, im over the moon to be returning to HNY :D
Hi,
Thanks for the heads up on the price changes at HNY - I've just called and ammended our booking to the HNY from

The guy on the left is the Earl really! John Montagu, the 11th Earl of Sandwich. However, as you say, the chap on the right must be the "Earl of Sandwich" - perhaps they will use him when it opens as a regular character?

:-)
So is this going to be adjoined to the Rainforest Cafe building? Or stand on its own?
You can see the plans here:
It'll be built right up against Rainforest Cafe. Adjoined as such, I'm not sure.
Its a shame the Rainforest Cafe building juts out like that into the path - to people who arent heading to the NY Hotel, the Village ends right there, what with Cafe Mickey round the corner and Earl of Sandwaich round the corner, out of view.
Some pictures of the stone-laying ceremony from DLP's Facobook page :D

Just a quick question: who's that scary guy on the first photo (on the left of Mickey)? He looks very important...
^The actual Earl of Sandwich!
He look kind of sick to me. Maybe he should eat more often in the restaurants with his name on, instead giving it to the mouse :?
Yep, that guy is John Montagu, the 11th Earl of Sandwich. He's 67, so cut him some slack in the looks department. He's not a male model, he's an entrepreneur, politician and nobleman. :-)

How great to see something coming to Disney Village that fills a real need, looks great, has classy branding, isn't (we hope) that overpriced and seems genuinely excited itself about opening here.
They even found a use for the wheelbarrow and spades of the Snow White show!
Am I right in saying this is the first completely new food/drink building in Disney Village since McDonalds in 1999? We've only had refits since then - Rainforest Cafe, Café Mickey, King Ludwig's, Starbucks.
Amongst all the excitement over the costumed guy, I don't think this was posted - first concept art for the interior:

Oh! That looks nice, spacius and bright with a sort of modern clasical twist. If that makes any sense.
Looks good! Nice modern feel which I don't think appears much in the Village (can't think of anything there with such a modern look, help me out here if I'm wrong..)
Also, anyone notice the date at the bottom right of the art? 05/06/09? Does that mean this was designed in 2009 or is just some sort of letterhead for EoS?
EDIT: Oh great I've done it again. Just checked this topic was made in 09, so it's makes sense that the concept could have been made a year ago, I really should do research before I open my mouth #-o

Yeah it's nice - not fully-themed Britishness but not complete modern blandness either. Starbucks has a similar modern feel, but aside from the cool recycled features it's a bit dull inside.
I said on Twitter, this is like if IKEA had designed the Harry Potter sets. (I'm here all week, try the fish)
Quote from: "Anthony"I said on Twitter, this is like if IKEA had designed the Harry Potter sets. (I'm here all week, try the fish)
Hehe, I know what you mean. The clean lines sort of gave me a flash of IKEA warehouse. But I supose it could be worse, it could have given me a flash of McDonalds or school cafeteria. And I love the book case, although it's probably to much to hope for real books.

McDonalds and Starbucks have a relatively modern interior. It seems its just the 'everyday' high street names that have the modern style.
This looks nice an all, but I stand by my word that every 'high street' name that comes to the Village, should be given a Disney twist. A bit like how Starbucks had that Disney mural at the back (but even that didn't last long...)
Here are some pics i took at my last visit:

Is it likely there will be construction noise when your eating in Rainforest Cafe?
when i was there i heard nothing :?
i've been able to look at alot of these threads, before joining up on the forums, and i've got to be honest...
Earl of Sandwich looks to be a good addition to Disney Village, along with World Of Disney :)
and i think EOS should do a good jop at hiding the hideous part of the Exterior of The Rainforest Cafe, hopefully when i next get to DLP, i'll be able to grab a bite to eat in EOS.
^ Hideous? Its the only part of the Village thats properly themed!
what i meant by hideous, is that you have a nice bit of themeing around the building, but then there's the large grey pannels of the building which stick out above it
The big white box where Hurricanes used to be? Yeah, that's not pretty from across the lake.
I'm not a huge fan of the giant beige tiles they appear to be using on the back of Earl of Sandwich either:
Doesn't that wall at the back stick out quite a bit? Do they plan to extend or double the height of the Rainforest/Hurricanes building to meet up with it or something?
I quite like the "beige tiles" with the silver pattern. Much better than the white latex paint that's seemingly supposed to make the other big boxy buildings "invisible." If you're going to have big blank wall, you might as well make it look nice.
Although I don't understand the physics of it all either — I'm guessing that they do have plans for the Rainforest Cafe building, but decided not to include them in the concept art. Otherwise there's going to be a very odd spot in between the two. Which is what you were getting at, of course, Anthony.
I think an update of the rainforest café should be a must. It would look really old next to the shiny new walls of earl of sandwich. The colors of the stone facade of rainforest café and the beige tiles could work very well together. So just let hope that they make something over there.
Thankyou Anthony... :)
that was the bit i was on about, Hurricanes Nightclub...

Oh that's a good point. And I shouldn't assume beige, they're probably some expensive limestone.
Unless I've missed something, there's been no news on Hurricanes. So is it better to have it sitting empty?
i've never eaten at the Rainforest in Disney Village, but i have done at Downtown Disney in Orlando, and the inside of the restaurant there is wonderfully themed, the themeing even carries onto the outside

now the Rainforest Cafe in Disney Village, i love the rockwork on the outside, but the big white part on top which was once occupied by Hurricanes, is the part the really bugs me, as it just makes the attractive part of Rainforest look strange.

The white walls looked a lot better when they stretched down to the water and had those giant windows in them.

It doesn't help that the rockwork looks so dirty these days. There's no colour to it at all.
What might look good is if the building decoration was split horizontally rather than vertically, so that the Rainforest theme covered this whole side and whatever replaces Hurricanes gets to theme the full height of the other half, where the old staircase is. Make it
look like two side-by-side units rather than top and bottom, which is a bit weird for themeing.
Although that depends if Paris still wants architecture like the Downtown Disney restaurants in Disney Village, especially overlooking the lake and hotels. They seem to prefer things more restrained at the moment.
Yes Rainforest Cafe definitely needs an overhaul outside. It would be great for them to extend upstairs! Then they could make it look like the Orlando restaurant!lol
Why is everybody getting so et up about the small area that seperates Earl of Sandwich with the rainforest all you need to do is paint that corner in a dark colour and place a large tree in front of it.

That's not the RFC at Downtown Disney Marketplace. For a start it's not 2 floors, and its not got a temple like that, it's a volcano.

That isn't the one in Orlando, this is the one at DTD in Disneyland California. The one at WDW's DTD is a volcano. And the one at DAK has waterfalls. Yes, I have always felt our one at DLP is underwhelming in comparison.
sorry about that being the wrong image guys, just before i had got that one i did a google image search for the one from Downtown Disney Orlando, and that was the image i came up with...

Quote from: "Martyn"Is it just me, or this taking a very long time?
They are indeed taking their time over it... so quintessentially French
Forgot about this - they are taking rather a while!
They're trying to build someplace that has been underwater for far longer than that it has been called "Lake Disney." These things take a while. It's not like setting up a tent.
At least there is some progress and it needs some time to dry the construction site.
MAybe it was already asked, but I don't want to browse the whole topic. Will the EoS restaurant be a franchise like Rainforest Cafe and run by Groupe Flo or ED SCA, or will it be run by the company behind EoS?
Quote from: "pussinboots"They're trying to build someplace that has been underwater for far longer than that it has been called "Lake Disney." These things take a while. It's not like setting up a tent.
Considering the construction walls went up in some time in May, which is 6 months ago now, I'd say this is taking a very long time.
Still nothing vertical...

Thanks for the pictures!
The space behind the Rainforest Cafe and EoS seems perfect for a restaurant on a ship, like Fulton's Crab House at Downtown Disney at WDW. It would add some nice touches to DV.
Hmm, the main thing that bug's me about the village is how dirty & grimey it looks... just look at the floor!
I wish they'd have kept the original floor...

That is a fantastic idea! The curved pier/decking there (what was that ever built for?) could be removed and you'd have plenty of space. It's a shame at the moment to have that curved area facing towards the backside of Rainforest Café.

Wow, that's an old picture! No Planet Hollywood yet and as far as I remember was the current floor there already when I first visited, april 1996.
DV looked so beautiful back in the 90ies. It's a shame what it looks like today. Hopefully it gets remodeled in the future.
It wasn't that beautiful, it looked quite cold and metallic to me. It was called Festival Disney back then, but it didn't have a festival atmosphere. infact it was slow and quiet when I saw it. DV is better.
Fantastic picture !! Lovely to see the Village as it was , although I don't like it much know , I have to agree it was very cold and unwelcoming back then but the sky of lights overhead was good ! I hope one day it will have a total overhaul of its landscaping , but think they don't really have to make an effort to do anything as there is no competition around and they have a captive market.
Hmm.... the Earl is going to be a lot smaller than I thought!
And yes, the floor could do with a good pressure wash!

Great idea. McDonald's always feels a bit isolated around there, so it would connect it nicely and obviously, give another restaurant. I expect filling the gaps and connecting all of the areas will be the way forward until enough demand is in place for a second road.

Unfortunately I have never seen Festival Disney. In 2000 it was already called Disney Village. I have only seen some pictures and judging from them, DV looked very nice in the dark with all the neon signs. I don't like the illuminated ballons of today and I also think that the new buildings, like King Ludwig's Castle doesn't fit the industrial theme. If I'm not mistaken, Frank Gehry designed it that way.The entrance looks definately better today, not just a gate in a fence.
But the exterior of King Ludwig's fits in with the interior, it's a small castle. It wouldn't look so good with an industrial exterior. Nor would Planet Hollywood. I don't know if you've been in the steakhouse? It's a very smart restaurant inside, warm and comfortable, but it bares no relation to Frank Gehry's rather metallic and cold entrance.
^ I think the vast contrasts in themes is what makes the village a great looking place. Just a shame about the ballons that are left dirty and deflated.
So excited for this!
If anyone's interested... here's a street level view of the "Festival" from back in the day ;)

Can't wait to see some more vertical construction soon.

I think that is still possible. If I'm not mistaken Disney just closed the bridge for construction. You have to turn right at the Steakhouse towards McDonalds and pass the DV Dome and then follow the walkway along the lake to the hotel.
Earlier today, the concrete was being poured to create the foundation.

I think that the fences have gates on them, so when their not using that particular bit of walkway for construction vehicles, you can still walk to the Newport Bay Club. I think anyway
A nice bit of progress. Assuming the construction is timber frame/metalwork, it shouldn't be too long before a structure is up - structure up and ready to fit out internally before the end of Feb perhaps, with an opening in May?
Blimey, its seems smaller than I expected. Then again, isn't it going to have a second floor?
It will have a kind of mezzanine level for half its length and then the outside terrace at the back overlooking the lagoon. There will also be a reserved area out the front for seating.
Definitely bigger than Starbucks, slightly smaller than McDonald's.
Well starbucks is more to get a cup of coffee and take it with you so it would make sence taht that is smaller. Both the MC and Earl are eateries were you can get a complete meal so I think that is the diffrence for the size choise.
Will EoS have two entrances. One on the ground level on the right side of the picture and one one the firslt level on the left side of the picture. I think it would make sense.
^ That looks more like a lower deck (outside seating) rather than another entrance.
However, I cant quite see how that'll work. That artist image shows the bridge ending right at the front, yet in real life, the bridge ends around the middle.

Unless they are going to dig up that area around it?
You are right. I looks like an outside seating terrace. But it would be convinient if the bridge would be connected to the restaurant.
The back wall has gone up! Hiding one side of Ghery's once rather elegent "Key west Seafood/Hurricanes Disco" turned Rainforest Caff building forever :-"

Anyone else thinking about whether this is actually going to be popular or not? I had doubts with Starbucks at first, but that grew on me, and it now feels like its filled a gap in the village, but I can see the Earl doing the same.
it's looking good and was well on the way earlier on in the week when I was there .. I am looking forward to sampling it when I go back in June ..
Quote from: "Martyn"Anyone else thinking about whether this is actually going to be popular or not? I had doubts with Starbucks at first, but that grew on me, and it now feels like its filled a gap in the village, but I can see the Earl doing the same.
Starbucks definateyl filled a gap. It's the only place at DLRP where you can get a real cup of coffee instead of the Nescafe products. We have been there every day. I also like the design of the coffee house.
If the sandwiches will not be too expensive, I'm sure EoS will also be popular. Disney's food isn't the best and McDonalds is even worse. I can't wait to see it open.
I would argue that Disney's version of fast food is even worse than McDonald's. The only good thing about it is that it might contain less monosodium glutamate, artificial flavorings and all that sort of business that makes McDonald's food look, taste and smell the way it does.
I really hope Earl of Sandwich's fare is a little less artificial in nature. Some cheap but real food — now there's a gap at the resort.
Judging by the current menu it should fit that perfectly: http://www.earlofsandwichusa.com/food/sandwich/ (http://www.earlofsandwichusa.com/food/sandwich/%22%20onclick=%22window.open(this.href);return%20false;)
Hot sandwiches, wraps, salads, soups. And get this - over in the US it's $5.99 a sandwich. Now I doubt they'll charge the equivalent €4.50 over here, but even if they just swapped the symbol and made it €6.00 that's equal to DLP's own, probably inferior, and cold sandwiches. Wouldn't it be a kick up the backside if Earl managed to make great, interesting sandwiches for €5.99?
I think it'll be a huge hit.
We were talking a while ago about what the opening would mean for New York Style Sandwiches. They currently serve paninis and things for around €7.90. I think we presumed it might just close or be replaced, but then again couldn't it be made into a little New York pizza place? There are already pizza slices on the menu and there's a takeaway pizza window just opposite (where they used to have Kebabs) that always has a long queue in the evenings. Just a thought.
Yes whilst it may compete with the park's food, would it really be able to survive on just the dinner time rush? As I cant see people choosing this over McDonalds for a quick evening meal.
I've been to Earl of Sandwich. The food there is not bad at all, quite good actually. Most of you probably know Subway. The chain that sells those overpriced American-style submarine sandwiches. If you compare Earl to Subway, Earl clearly wins by a big margin. Their sandwiches are much more sophisticated, their bread is better (it is crispy and even has a taste) and their standard combinations are better and more original than the Subway fare. If you like the large quantities Subway offers (the footlong sandwiches), you might be dissapointed, but I tend to go for quality rather than quantity ;).
But, you're in the homeland of the baguette, it's a shame there is not a single shop that sells freshly baked French baguettes in the whole of the resort. (If you're lucky, you can find some pre-wrapped ones at Market House Deli or Blockbuster Cafe.) A decent, freshly baked French baguette can be even more delicious than anything Earl has on offer.
Anyway, I'm excited about this new addition. The resort needs additions like this. It offers something special (at least for the moment, Earl of Sandwiches still has just a handful of locations around the globe). We can get McD and Starbucks anywhere else in the world. Let's hope the invasion of the common franchises into the village has been halted after Starbucks.
One thing I don't get although is, why has this location been chosen? First of all, Earl of Sandwich offers food that most of us would consider lunchtime fare. Yet, this place will be completely empty around lunchtime. Also, you won't be visiting this spot while making a switchover between the parks, it is completely on the wrong side of the village.
Earl of Sandwich would, in my opinion, make a perfect addition inside one of the two parks, as a themed restaurant. It shouldn't be too difficult to adapt such a restaurant to a specific theme, even provide some fitting backstory to it. Most people don't leave the parks for lunch anyway and it isn't like the Studios are overflowing with places to eat.
Maybe I can start a personal rant about the quality of the food in the parks here (although blatantly off-topic)... I don't understand why the resort isn't doing anything to bring the food inside the parks to a higher standard. Especially the low-end offerings, they are just bad. Yes, I've eaten (far) worse at other parks, but there is really no excuse to selling the same low quality burgers, hot-dogs and reheated pizzas all over the place. Also, in my opinion, there is a huge gap in quality and consistency between the parks in general and the food being offered at the Village and most hotels, this really needs to be fixed in my opinion.
I don't think Disney wants other brands in their parks. In the US they made an exception for McDonalds. In none of their parks are any other restaurants. Although there are restaurant chains that operate some restaurants in Disney parks, but they are not allowed to use their logo.
The food at DLRP is really bad, especially the fast food. The table service restaurants offer better food, but nevertheless it is still not as good as the food served at WDW. That's just our opinion and based on our visit to WDW in 2008 and on our visits to DLRP in 2008 and 2010. I really hope that the quality of the food gets better.
During my semester in the US I have been to Subway a lot and there it was cheaper than in the Europe. Here the subs are really expensive, but compared to the US even McDonalds food is expensive in Europe. Another reason, despite the food, not to go there.
QuoteMost of you probably know Subway. The chain that sells those overpriced American-style submarine sandwiches.
Maybe over priced, but they certainly fill you up. And I dont care how un-healthy it is, they're Meatball Marinara is off the hook!
And I think you've got it spot on about the location, it is very odd when you think about it.
It'll have a nice view over Lake Disney though, much like the view that the original Key West Seafood had of "Lake Buena Vista"
QuoteI don't think Disney wants other brands in their parks. In the US they made an exception for McDonalds. In none of their parks are any other restaurants. Although there are restaurant chains that operate some restaurants in Disney parks, but they are not allowed to use their logo.
That's just to underline the original qualities of DCA ofcourse ;). There are, indeed, no other chains operating under their own brand at this moment. But it's not like Disney isn't selling brands like "Coca Cola" and "Ben & Jerry's" by their original name, even their advertising is all over the place. Of course, having competition for your own food outlets might not be the optimal thing. Yet again, there is a lot of room for something like Earl inside both parks. Maybe they should outsource it a bit more to parties that are actually good at bringing GOOD food at reasonable prices and focus themselves on the stuff they actually should be good at: running the parks in the best possible way. Most of the food in the Village and hotels is outsourced and to be honest, they do a better job than the parks.
QuoteHere the subs are really expensive, but compared to the US even McDonalds food is expensive in Europe.
I doubt it will be much different for Earl of Sandwich. In general, costs here are higher and as a result food, especially at restaurants, is more expensive. But in my opinion, Subway really is out-of-balance in Europe, especially since you cannot consider it some specality location anymore, there are almost as many Subway restaurants as McDonalds in many places those days (although Subway seems to be suffering from canibalism, especially in Germany), but that's an entirely different discussion ;)
QuoteMaybe over priced, but they certainly fill you up. And I dont care how un-healthy it is, they're Meatball Marinara is off the hook!
You should really try the "Cannonballs" sandwich from Earl of Sandwich (this spring) and tell us what you think of it. ;)
With the location, if anything I'm surprised they've given such a nice spot to a relatively affordable restaurant. With a view over the lake you might expect something more upmarket. I guess it's a small spot, and I don't think it'll be a problem at all. McDonald's is tucked away on its own around the back and is nearly always overflowing, whilst Starbucks seems busy right through the day. Obviously they have the recognised brand, but Earl of Sandwich will be unique by comparison - it'll win a lot of trade simply by not being either of those two.
You're possibly underestimating the potential here if you think Earl of Sandwich will only be popular at lunchtimes. I wouldn't be surprised to see people who normally eat at Market House Deli picking up lunch here instead, and evenings will be big. It might just take an advertisement or two out the front of Disney Village just to get word out to the people who turn back after Hollywood Pictures at the moment.
I'd imagine DLP wouldn't like the loss in their revenue, even if it made for a better experience if Earl of Sandwich actually took over the sandwich provision at Market House Deli, Blockbuster Café, etc. Thematically Toad Hall would obviously be a perfect fit, but then that place actually has one of the better counter service offerings already.
Sorry about dragging on a bit about it, but I actually like the discussion ;)

Well, I don't think it will be a complete failure, I'm actually almost certain it will be a success, at least at the beginning. Also, there are quite a lot of people that eat at Subway for dinner. Yet again, I think it is a partial failure for being not at the optimal spot. I only see myself exiting the parks and walking over there for lunch, if all other options inside the parks are totally overcrowded. When I'm walking back from the parks to the hotels during park operating hours, the Village is usually quite deserted, even on crowded days, which isn't unusual ofcourse. Most visitors paid good money for admission and they want to use every minute of it ;).
QuoteI'd imagine DLP wouldn't like the loss in their revenue, even if it made for a better experience if Earl of Sandwich actually took over the sandwich provision at Market House Deli, Blockbuster Café, etc.
Yeah, it's all about the margins. Yet, Burger Invasion is one of the most succesful "restaurants" at DCA and they worked on a joint-venture for years. Nobody knows why-the-hell they choose the bottom-line of the fast-food franchises out there... Also, they're also giving the margins away at the Village and the hotels already, but it seems to be working in favor of them.
I'm convinced they would be selling more food, beverages and merchandise if they optimized it more to what people are actually looking for. Most people visiting the park prefer a rather light lunch around noon, some snacks in the afternoon and a full, warm dinner at the evening. In the parks, we've seen the rise of the all-you-can-eat buffet restaurants. They're easy to operate, but also dilute the offer for a decent lunch inside the parks.
QuoteThematically Toad Hall would obviously be a perfect fit, but then that place actually has one of the better counter service offerings already.
Yes, Toad Hall would be the perfect fit, yet I would never forgive them if they changed the menu or even the restaurant itself :). There was (and still is) pleny of opportunity left in the Studios. Lots of hungy people there everytime I visit...

I always actually assumed one reason McDonald's might have been built right at the back of the Village was to stop this dash-in-and-out for fast food, to stop people eating there instead of the parks or just popping in for a takeaway without having to walk past a few Disney boutiques first. I mean, if they built Earl of Sandwich where they're building World of Disney, the counter service places in the parks would be in serious trouble!

Maybe Colonel Hathi's Pizza Outpost would be another good fit, with a slight name change. It has such a dull menu at the moment - a pizza outpost with a choice of just two bland pizzas now? Cheese, or cheese with ham! Sandwiches, wraps and soup would be so much better. In any case, the location wouldn't really have to be British themed, if they were just "stocking" the sandwiches. It'd be great to see sandwiches wrapped up with an Earl of Sandwich sticker on them anywhere. But then you have to ask: Why can't Disney just make this kind of good quality fast food themselves?
That would be great if Disney and EoS sould start a joint venture for selling the sandwiches. The Blockbuster Cafe and Thr Pizza Outpost would be great locations. Disney's fast food is really bad, especially their burgers, but I don't eat them anymore. So no problem for me. The pizzas are okay, but I only eat them once per stay.
When I'm abroad I always eat at Subway for a snack, because here in Austria we don't have any Subway Restaurants. There is McDonalds and in a few cities you will find a Burger King. That's all. Subway has a great Veggie Sandwich for a reasonable price.
Do you know which company produces the pizzas and pastas for the Disney fast food restaurants? Is it one of their supporters? Nestle or Unilever?
QuoteI always actually assumed one reason McDonald's might have been built right at the back of the Village was to stop this dash-in-and-out for fast food, to stop people eating there instead of the parks or just popping in for a takeaway without having to walk past a few Disney boutiques first.
There might be some truth to that, although McDonald's already existed before the studios opened.
QuoteI mean, if they built Earl of Sandwich where they're building World of Disney, the counter service places in the parks would be in serious trouble!
That might just be the case indeed, especially for the Studios. Most of the time I exit the Studios around lunchtime to find some lunch in the Disneyland park. If Earl of Sandwich would be (almost) en-route, the choice would be obvious.
QuoteMaybe Colonel Hathi's Pizza Outpost would be another good fit, with a slight name change. It has such a dull menu at the moment - a pizza outpost with a choice of just two bland pizzas now? Cheese, or cheese with ham!
Last time I checked, their menu was almost identical to Pizzeria Bella Notte and Victoria's Home-Style. It's a Pizza outpost on socialist rations. It really is a pity there is nothing special to eat here. This place has such a beatiful interior and a hughe capacity. Yet, it is quite often virtually deserted or even closed.
QuoteSandwiches, wraps and soup would be so much better. In any case, the location wouldn't really have to be British themed, if they were just "stocking" the sandwiches. It'd be great to see sandwiches wrapped up with an Earl of Sandwich sticker on them anywhere.
I don't think Earl of Sandwich will be to fond of selling pre-wrapped sandwiches, as they take pride in the fact that everything is prepared fresh ;). Yet again, it would be a real improvement to Croque Monsieur or rubbery "pastrami" sandwiches. (which, last time I visited, weren't even available at Market House Deli).
QuoteBut then you have to ask: Why can't Disney just make this kind of good quality fast food themselves?
I think their focus is simply wrong. They rely on a few companies that mass-produce the fast food fare they serve. It is quite obvious they don't have the same sophistication that some of those large fast food chains have. If you look at the large queues at some of those places and how slow they actually more, it is quite obvious their processes are not optimal. And you see the same with the food, it's far beyond optimal either.
Also, they're serving lukewarm pizza over-the-counter in cardboard boxes. How many other pizza joints do you know that serve instant pizza in a cardboard box? Most pizza joints sell either freshly baked pizzas or pizza slices that are reheated in a pizza oven.
Still, food inside theme parks remains a mistery to me. Most parks I've visited in Europe even serve food that's far below the quality being offered at DLP...
I vaguely remember, when Disneyland Paris first opened, the food in the park was of a really high quality. Disney were trying hard to impress the French. March Hare Refreshments did they beautiful Unbirthday Cakes, and the pasta at the Bella Notte was on another level. Plus they had this cool multi-coloured translucent cutlery, including a pasta fork with a spiral handle.
QuoteIt might just take an advertisement or two out the front of Disney Village just to get word out to the people who turn back after Hollywood Pictures at the moment.
Thats a good point.... the Earl isn't even going to be visable from anywhere in the village (unless you're outside Cafe Mickey). They'll definitely need to scatter some adveritsing boards about.
QuoteI vaguely remember, when Disneyland Paris first opened, the food in the park was of a really high quality. Disney were trying hard to impress the French.
I not so vaguely remember that the food used to be better ;). It even was even slightly better just about two years ago. Even the table restaurant have deteriorated in quality in my opinion. I ate at Silver Spur and Walts both in 2008 and 2010 and did notice a shift in quality to the wrong side.
Back in 1992, the park did have fewer counter restaurants, just because they though Europeans would appreciate higher quality food. They left out alcoholic beverages, which caused quite a stir in the French press. As of the restructuring, they reduced the number of table service restaurants and changed the menu drastically. (And yes, ever since, you even can get wine inside the parks ;).).
For some reason, over the years, they started to dillute the offerings of all the outlets. For example, Casey's Corner is selling the same hot dogs as you can get everywhere else in the park, with the sole exception that you can add cheese on top. About 16 years ago, they offered about 6 varieties of different hot dogs. Also, their signature lemon pie is gone... There are countless other examples, like the Unbirthday Cake you mentioned.
We Europeans should be known for good cuisine, yet we still accept being served the lowest common dominator. The food at all other Disney parks is generally much better... When they opened the resort, they were affraid that they aimed to low, now they're aiming even lower than the American counterparts. Still, we seem to accept it and we're giving the wrong examples to the people that make the decision. I've never ever eaten at the McDonalds in the Village, yet, this place is overflowing every day. I don't get it, when I'm on a vacation, I want something that I cannot get every day...
PS: One of the opening partners of Disneyland Paris was Findus. Findus was not only a sponsor, but also a supplier. Findus is a Swedish firm by origin, which I can imagine, wasn't really met with the warmest welcome in the country of haute cuisine.
John it is so true what you are saying. In the last two years the quality of the food went downhill. We have also been to DLRP in 2008 and 2010 and we were so disappointed by the food including table service. We have eaten at Walts three times since 2006 and this year the food wasn't really worth the money. Okay I'm vegetarian, but I deserve the same quality.
Besides DLRP we have only visited WDW and even there the food is so much better. There the CMs did everything to satisfy us. They even created some special dishes for us that weren't on the menu. When I asked the waiter at Walts if it is possible to add cooked vegetables to my meal, he got angry and told that can't do that. The rest of the time he didn't speak in ENglish to us, just in French. We required another waiter and made a complaint at Guest Relations.
You are also right that it is annoying that you get the same fast food in nearly all restaurants. It's so sad that Disney doesn't try harder, but as long as nobody asks for better food nothing will change. Back home, Disney sent us an email that they are sorry about our dining experiences and that they are thinking about changing the menu. Let's wait and see.
We have eaten once at McDonalds at DLRP and it wasn't good. I was never a big fan of McD, but we had to catch the train and the queues weren't that long. I do understand families to eat there, because the food is expensive at DLRP and at McD you know what you get. Although I think tis isn't even true for McD, because in my opinion the quality of their food varies in all countries.
Disney just has to reorganize their food. In the D23 fall magazine there is an article about Christophe Coutanson and it says that he is responsible for the menus of all restaurants and buffets at DLP, WDS and DV. I don't think that fasst food is included. Maybe it would be better to split it up to three chefs. It's a huge responsibilty for one chef to create all menus.
I hope we didn't go so far off-topic that we silently killed the original topic ;)

This guy has been the "executive chef" since the beginning. I doubt he can be content with the current state of things in the parks. Yet again, he probably has to work with the given budget and suppliers.
We probably all know about the cook that committed suicide, maybe it is not right to connect those two without knowing all the details, but it surely rings a bell...
On the bright side, we're a few months away from a franchise that seemingly still cares about quality and still needs to prove itself. That should, at least for the medium term future increase the overal quality of food on offer at the resort. Also, a succes of those non-Disney eateries might also spark some renewed interest in raising food quality at the parks themselves.
Disney just has to look at Group Flo which operates most of the DV restaurants. There the quality is also better. Hopefully it will change in the future again.
There are a few interesting dishes on the menu at Fuente del Oro and Hakuna Matata which might disprove this, but from typing up a good load of menus the other week it became very clear that DLP just doesn't think much of fast food, counter service. There's very little imagination, interest or variety, especially compared to the tempting table service menus. The prices are high and the experience is low.
I don't know if this is something in French culture (that fast food can't be good food) or if it's some kind of business decision at the park to churn out the fast food keeping queues low while prices and revenues are high. Do they hope people will pay more for the buffets and table service instead? I mean, if all the counter service places offered great dishes it'd be a lot harder tempting people to give up their precious time in the park for the €23+ buffets, right?
But then again, no! They wouldn't purposely make an experience "bad". Maybe it's simply hard for a park in their financial situation to invest in good variety and quality for fast food. Maybe they really need the big profit margins here. Or maybe there really is just some fast food snobbishness in Paris - it's "fast" food, so why does it need to be good? Although you'd think there'd be enough Americans in the company to say "actually... it can be good - and your revenues and guest satisfaction can increase because of it."
So yeah, I really hope Earl proves something with the variety, quality and pricing.
I just cant see it being somewhere to compete with the Rainforest Cafe and Annette's etc. McDonalds is probably the only restaurant that is worrying about the Earl.
Dont worry, I'm not knocking it in anyway at all, after all, I'm certainly going to be trying it. But for us, it will only be a place to have lunch *if* we can be bothered to walk back to the Village.
QuoteThere are a few interesting dishes on the menu at Fuente del Oro and Hakuna Matata which might disprove this, but from typing up a good load of menus the other week it became very clear that DLP just doesn't think much of fast food, counter service.
I've seen it; great work. Must be rather boring and tedious work. Now let's keep it up to date ;). The stuff at dlpfoodguide.com has been outdated for years. At least most restaurants offer some recent reviews.
Regarding Fuente del Oro; This is such a missed chance for some decent TexMex fast food. But yet again, compared to the buffet at La Grange, the food is rather bland here.
QuoteDo they hope people will pay more for the buffets and table service instead? I mean, if all the counter service places offered great dishes it'd be a lot harder tempting people to give up their precious time in the park for the €23+ buffets, right?
You know, I would really like at least a single restaurant that offers a pay-as-you-go buffet. Not a EUR 23+ buffet. The kind of buffet where you can get a baguette, bagel, muffin, etc. and pay for what you actually are using. Now, for a quick snack, you're essentially locked into low quality fast food if you stay inside the parks. After a few days, you're quite fed up with low quality burgers, hot dogs and pizza. Still, I don't feel any urge to pay EUR 23 excluding drinks just for a quick bite..
QuoteI don't know if this is something in French culture (that fast food can't be good food) or if it's some kind of business decision at the park to churn out the fast food keeping queues low while prices and revenues are high.
I guess you've been at the Cafe Hyperion during lunch? This place is huge and the capacity is enormous. Even although their operation is far from smooth (with such a limited menu, it should be doable to have all items available I guess), the lines there are long and the place is always crowded, even without any decent show going on at the moment.
B.T.W.: Did they return the burger-customization-buffet carts they introduced in 2008? Last time I went there, they were nowhere to be seen. Not that they really improved the quality of the burger, but they at least added something special.
QuoteBut then again, no! They wouldn't purposely make an experience "bad". Maybe it's simply hard for a park in their financial situation to invest in good variety and quality for fast food. I doubt it is on purpose. It is either "don't care" or "don't know". And I agree, revenues and guest satisfaction can be greatly increased. And guest satisfaction should be their number one concern. With the amount of visitors needed to keep this operation in the profit region, you absolutely need your customers returning to you. And let's be honest, we're already raving around here, because a new "baguetterie" is opening soon. There is a serious market for decently priced food of decent quality and originality.
QuoteDisney just has to look at Group Flo which operates most of the DV restaurants. There the quality is also better. Hopefully it will change in the future again.
It is like they realized they couldn't get away with the mediocre quality of their other operations ;). Then again, the quality of most table restaurants in the parks was quite good until around 2008.
PS: You know the best place in the parks to get a decent burger? Cafe des Cascadeurs! Only order a burger here, as it will be freshly made in front of your eyes, there is nothing to complain about here. Don't order a hot dog, it's the same reheated junk you get anywhere else. Also, you're eating inside a real piece of history, just look around, the backstory is explained to you. One of the crown jewels of the Studios Parks if you ask me ;).
Time for those all important Construction updates :D

Thanks for the update.
Would be good if the Rainforest Cafe covered up all that white with their stone wall themeing.
Thats a must for me! It´s not really a beautiful view like this. Rainforest cafe should do a bit more.
^ YES THEY SHOULD!lol
The WDW Rainforest Cafe looks amazing, this just looks average. Same with the sidewall of Planet Hollywood too. If all these places pulled their fingers out the Village could be a real magical place.
Have you ever seen it in london or another city.
They all look just plain than.
In WDW it looks great because it is part of the park Animal kingdom.
If you look at the one in Anaheim it is more like ours in Paris.
http://www.allabouttours.com/activities ... 20CAFE.jpg (http://www.allabouttours.com/activities/california/disneyland/downtown%20disney/RAINFOREST%20CAFE.jpg%22%20onclick=%22window.open(this.href);return%20false;). The rainforest cafe in Anahiem is the most themed in my opinion, two storey jungle temple theme. Makes Paris facade look cheap.
The Anaheim design would be good for Paris. The problem will be that Hurricanes takes up the top floor. I wonder if Rainforest Cafe would ever be able to justify taking on that extra space? Maybe they could even put a T-Rex cafe (//http://www.trexcafe.com/) up there and give the whole block a vaguely jungle theme.

Are there already plans for the former Hurricanes? I can imagine that Group Flo will take the space and will open a new restaurant. A T-Rex would be a good choice, since it is very popular at WDW and it belongs to the same company like the Rainforest Cafe. Makes it easier to the a franchise licence, since Group Flo alreafy operates the Rainforest Cafe.
Like paterdave2 already said, the Rainforest Cafes just look great at Disney Parks. We have been to the one in Chicago and there the restaurant wasn't themed on the outside. The inside looked like the one in Paris.
The Anaheim Rainforest Cafe is definately the best themed cafe on Disney properties.

Nice. It should rocket along now, as it will all be metalwork and glass for the exterior walls, plus the floor of the first floor.
WOW that goes fast.
Can't wait for the opening.
They can build fast, but sadly not always doing it fast
Good to see this quick progress. DV needs it bad.
Is there an opening date released yet?
because spring 2011 is a wide term

They are clearly wanting this opened asap. Loads of workmen on it all week!
Could the opening of Eos close the New York Sandwhiches store? I think alot of the stores in DV are too similar and more variety could be added.
Quote from: "15MagicalYears"Could the opening of Eos close the New York Sandwhiches store? I think alot of the stores in DV are too similar and more variety could be added.
I think they will do. With the help of the WoD store, the shops and restaurants under the "candy cane" will all be put out of use. So here's hoping that that area will either be knocked down or just completely refurbished [-o<
In other news... WE HAVE A ROOF

Apologies for the slow uptake but what does "under the candy cane" refer to?
The candy cane in question would probably be the row of shops beginning with the Disney Store and ending with World of Toys, which has a striped silver-and-red roof. (Why does it have such a fanciful roof? For the benefit of whom? Birds? Did Gehry foresee Panoramagique?)

A hideous block, made worse and worse by a lack of upkeep on one hand and misguided renovations on the other, as has been reiterated a thousand times. I hope they'll knock it down once World of Disney opens.
The other side of the street can be fixed more easily, as we've seen with Starbucks. But how do you make this monolithic thing appealing?
QuoteWith the help of the WoD store, the shops and restaurants under the "candy cane" will all be put out of use.
I dont quite think the WoD store is going to mean the Disney Stores have no use?! They need more than one shop in the Village! Especially as the WoD store will sell differen't stuff to the actual Disney Store.
Though I agree that some of them shops could be done up, such as Disney Fashion and Hollywood Pictures.
And to be honest, if the Earl opening causes the closure of the New York sandwich shop, we cant really blame the Earl for that? Competition is a good thing, and if the New York shop cant compete with either their prices or quality, then they either adjust themselves, or close.
Thanks, I figured as much. Surprisingly, on that photo the Village doesn't look too bad. Admittedly that picture looks like it was from shortly after the opening. 19 years of poor upkeep and stupid additions (Deflated tacky ballons anyone?) have made the village awful. WDW and Disneyland both have shopping/dining areas that are full of charm and look inviting. Disneyland's Village is part of the Grand California Hotel, and still looks good!
Considering the weather I am still to this day surprised that a cold steel structure was signed off and built rather than something more sympathetic to the weather and climate. Additions such as the planting have helped, but on the whole its still awful.
As for Earl of Sandwich, looking at the new pictures, it looks very tight and shoe horned in when you see the bridge. It looks like an after thought as its that close....

I also think that DV looks nice on the picture. Today the village isn't a very invitational place and I really don't like these ugly ballons. Downtown Disney in Florida is wonderful compared to DV and there you want to spend some time. DD offery more and different shops and more variety would be great at DV. Nearly all shops sell the same stuff.
Is New York Sandwiches operated by Disney or by Group Flo? I've never eaten there. Are the sandwiches good? I can imagine that they are overpriced compared to the quality you get. I think that Disney can't wait until EoS is open, because it is operated by a third party and so they don't have to pay the CMs, but Disney still earns money with the lease. If NY Sandwiches belongs to Disney, I'm sure they will close it to save money and they will turn it into a retail store.
Quote from: "Martyn"QuoteWith the help of the WoD store, the shops and restaurants under the "candy cane" will all be put out of use.
Well The disney fashion I can agree with that but Hollywood pictures That one needs to stay.
I just love that little shop. It's to bad they blocked off the second floor but that diorama of the castle is just breathtaken.
^ Thats the Gallery you're on about, not the Hollywood pictures. I love the Gallery, though it is a little small.

In my opinion that would actually be a good idea. They could then extend the Gallery Shop.

By the way, are they bookshelves on the walls? :?

Having had a look back at my old posts on this thread, I'm stick by my previous timescales - ready to start the internal fitout at the end of February and ready to open in May.
Once they paint the large concrete wall at the back, it will look quite good next to the Rainforest Cafe.
Here's a new picture of EoS posted by OliMatt on Disney Central Plaza:

Looking good!
I've never tried EoS before, and I love Subway, but I'm actually glad they've gone for the Earl, looks a lot more classy than the yellow and green of Subway would have.
The giant mushrooms/toadstalls are really right in front of the entrance:

But presumably they're staying...?
The mushrooms are gorgeous and are not in any way tacky or cheap looking. I joke :-)
Hopefully they'll be removed.
EoS is a million times better than Subway! Their Hawaiian BBQ Chicken is to die for. I'm so excited!!

Anthony, that picture you posted is obviously the wrong angle, as they look tiny in the ariel pic.
I think the building looks great - bringing some modern feel into a corner of Village that has looked really dated because of the lack of refurbishment.
I also think the choice to go with EOS in stead of say Subway is a good choice. It might not be that famous, but it seems to be of a better quality.
Promising indeed... :)
I'm still curious about that large concrete wall at the back. Why is it larger than the opposite wall? :)
Is the raised area next to the lake/bridge for out door dining during the summer?
I'm assuming that's where the kitchen and whatnot is. :)
That is an outside seating area, and it looks like there could be a seating area on the roof too...
I hope this is ready by May 1st when we go could really do with some more reasonably priced food.

Well, it's actually the 1st of June... :')
Oh! Maybe I need glasses. XD
Im as guilty as the next person, but dont you find it quite mad that we obsess over the opening of a fast food restaurant that we may visit maybe once a year.....
I wouldnt pay this much attention to one that was opening on my street that I may visit daily lol

I totally agree. lol
I really want to book a trip for 1st June now...
Yes, it's mad to be excited about a new sandwich shop, but it's also the first completely new building in Disney Village since..... erm, McDonald's? Planet Hollywood? The dome, perhaps. (And excluding the IMAX of course) It really shows how slow they've been to expand the place, even with outside names. Hopefully this decade will be completely different to the last.

I really hope so. Im going back to the resort as as Cast Member in May, and whilst I'm enormously excited about going back to work there, I'm also really excited that I'm going to be able to witness how all the new projects are progressing!
Hmmm. They don't seem to have added the first floor's... floor... yet. :? Then again, it's not like I know how to build a sandwich shop. :P
Quote from: "Meph"Hmmm. They don't seem to have added the first floor's... floor... yet. :? Then again, it's not like I know how to build a sandwich shop. :P
It only covers about half the building. You can see it in the first photo, in white behind the cream/beige glazing.
Oh, right. I see it. It's actually quite cool!
Well I have already planned to eat here every day of my trip in October, if these sandwiches are anything like Subway then I will be in heaven.
Do we know exactly what they'll be selling? This is their first shop outside of the US, so I'm curious about whether they're going to sell anything different. I hope they do paninies!

I am so looking forward to this being open when I go in late June .. the one in Downtown Disney in Oralndo is fantastic .. it puts subway to shame .. .. nom nom nom ..
It seems the huge mushrooms in fron of EoS and Rainforest Cafe will not stay:

Good news about the mushrooms. Finally, someone in charge of Disney Village demonstrates having taste :-) Those mushrooms were tacky and weird.
Yes, good riddance, although we haven't seen the replacement yet. Rainforest Cafe just lost its only bit of external themeing on that side apart from the stone walls. I'm sure they'll want to substitute those mushrooms somehow.
Quote from: "Martyn"That does look really nice! They've done a good jo again of making a high street name fit into the Village.
It's not really a high street name (yet) though, that's a bit of a misconception. There's only a handful of Earls in a few states in the US.

I'm hoping they might get rid of the one sticking up from the Rainforest Caf's roof (the one behind the Earl), cos it'll look a little strange having that stick up above the restaurant :?
Well, that's interesting. Now, surely they'll want to do something to the Rainforest Cafe.
It'll be weird without those mushrooms being there. I used to see them all the time when I was a kid. Although, I never used to associate them with the rainforest cafe, back then; I thought they were part of the Disney Village theming. XD
Rainforest Cafe looks so bland and ugly, and that will be emphasized once EOS is open. Hopefully they will do something with the exterior.
I really hope that'll do something with all the blank White buildings in the Village. You'd have thought that crisp, White buildings would look timeless and enduring, but for some reason they here look cheap and tacky.
I really hope some proper cohesive theming is brought to the Village soon. At the very least, make it more like Downtow Disney in Anaheim.
I wonder if the third mushroom is staying? It's not within the construction walls at least.
I wish they'd take this same ruthlessness to the leftover props and signage around the former Hurricanes entrance which have been left there for over a year now.
Hmm, I dont approve to be honest. Yes it may free up some space, but does that really matter? Did we need more space? I think it now looks bare and makes the Rainforest Cafe look even uglier.

Quote from: "littlemermaid83"Is it wrong to get so excited about a sandwich? :p
No, it's never wrong to get excited about food :D/
Earl of Sandwich to open shops in UK ? The 11th Earl of Sandwich, who opened the first of his 13 strong chain of Earl of Sandwich shops in the USA in 2004 - Earl of Sandwich - is to open his chain's first shop in the UK next week. The unit, which will be located on Ludgate Hill near St Paul's, is planned as the first of a chain to be rolled out nationwide. The ubiquitous two bread and filling snack was originally named after the 4th Earl of Sandwich in the 18th century.
More on sandwiches ? Alex Garland, the Earl of Sandwich's CEO for Europe, has said his company has 'big plans to roll out'. Big Hospitality reports that his company intends to establish a base in London (with six or so units within two years) and will then move into the regions. The 'main concept is hot, fresh sandwiches made to order, which are prepared fast' but the price-point will be set somewhere above Pret at £3.95 for a choice of one of 13 sandwiches.
This is taken from an industry email I subscribe to for work....
I will be interested in visiting to see how it compares both in quality and price with the one in WDW
Thanks for the info. That's unexpected, opening in the UK next week?! In all the press blurb they've always stated Disney Village as being the first in Europe. Does anyone know how this franchising works, by the way? Will Earl of Sandwich actually own and run the Disney Village restaurant?
If they roughly stick to that £3.95 price point in Euros then it'll still be incredibly reasonable for DLP.
Edit: Ahaa http://earlofsandwich.co.uk (http://earlofsandwich.co.uk"%20onclick="window.open(this.href);return%20false;) !
DLRP Today posted on Twitter earlier that the Sandwiches in DV will be priced at €5.50

Good news! Disney's food quality is not the best and everyone says that EoS products are really good.
Judging by peoples compliments of the Earl, I always assumed there were already stores in the UK?
Hmmm. All these extra franchises are not necessarily good news. People used to like Starbucks back when you still had to look for them. Once there are thirty Earl of Sandwiches in London and thirty in Paris, the novelty will have worn off.
Good Point Puss! And yes that can be a real problem in the future. For now I have nearly enough franchise chains at the village. I would love to see the cheesecake factory at the resort [-o< but that´s not a franchise and a higher quality dining.
Other wishes are unique dining opportunities "that only disney can create" (so come on disney! Create some!). Why not high themed restaurants for the village? Were is the "rooftop dining" or "dine under the sea"? Filling up all caps with franchises isn´t "Disney" village anymore. But for the moment it seems to be the only way for them to get new touches into the village. Maybe a budget thing.
EDIT: My mistake - I posted in the wrong thread! IGNORE.
?? That's the rain Forrest cafe not EoS. How old is that concept artwork as it just appears to be the original design that has now lost mushrooms and gained blue paint
Sorry penfold12 - that was in the wrong thread (and very off topic!) Thats what you get for going on a posting spree!

Haha I've done that in the past! Is that concept artwork the original artwork, for when the Rain Forrest originally opened?
I believe so. :)
Here's a picture from today... they've ripped up the concrete to the immediate right of the restaurant - I wonder whether the wavy red/orange concrete will be continued up to the restaurant or whether they'll choose something a bit more tasteful :P
Rainforest Café looks alright in blue... whish they'd clean up the shell/tower bit around the back of it though! ... and do something with that mushroom.

Interesting. Although, it looks like we're once again getting excited about something as simple as the floor. XD
As for that last mushroom, though; isn't it needed to shelter the crocodile?
I was wondering about the floor, too. Surely they will want to get rid of the wavy concrete at some point, and this would be a good place to start. But it would sure look strange in between.
I'm not a fan of the Rainforest Cafe's new color, I'm afraid. I don't know why Euro Disney think blue is a good color for architecture. First Toon Studio, now this. A better and more permanent way would be to "dress up" the top of the facade with Victorian-style moldings or something. Make it look like a handsome edifice of the sort you'd find in any large city, and then no one will care about themeing or color schemes. Gimmicks don't last.
Looks so bare outside RF :(
Hopefully they'll do something to spruce it up a bit.
Hm a blue color isn´t a solution for me. I wished so much that they would theme the whole building. That hurricanes is on upper floor doesn´t matter for me. They can clearly design the rainforest café as one building and next to it a proper clear entrance/facade to hurricanes or whatever there will take place. This lower floor / upper floor concept looks horrible.
Construction continues:

I haven't seen it in real life, so I'm just judging from the pictures. Compared to the rest of DV, which looks bad with the ugly balloons, I really like the architecture. In my opinion the building with its glass front is perfect for DV.
I think once the finishing touches and final details have been added it will look fabulous, cannot wait to see it in July.
Oh good, the white tiles look alright! Those were the one element of the concept I wasn't sure about. Thankfully they don't look too much like a toilet in real life.
Quote from: "davewasbaloo"In person, it really looked dull and uninspiring IMHO
But they've really not begun to add any of the patterns or colours seen in the concept art yet...
From that angle, RF Cafe looks quite awful in blue.... I'd be interested to know the reasoning behind this change.
I think I disagree. A darker blue, perhaps a wee bit gradianted would have been nice, but this one belnds nicely into the sky, and I think is lovely until they work out something better to do with it. The understated blue takes the cold hard lines of the white building away, letting your eyes focus more on the lovely yellows of the rockwork and the soon-to-be colourful facade of EoS.

The use of a pseudo-bookshelf was quite interesting. It's probably going to be a really popular place to eat.
I hope they do takeaways so that we can bring sandwiches into the parks.
That looks really classy! I can wait to see how this whole project turns out, I can see it being the new 'food hub' of Village if it's done right!
The hat/rings/tower/pyramid thingy on top looks wicked too, it's all coming together now!
I hope they somehow give it a little 'Disney' touch.
Quote from: "Martyn"I hope they somehow give it a little 'Disney' touch.
I don't, for me the Village shouldn't be about "Disney" (as in the cliché), that should be kept more in the parks where as the Village should be a more subtle.
Will the restaurant be operated by Earl of Sandwich or will it be a franchise operated by Group Flo or ED SCA?
Subtle is good, but there's nothing wrong with some small detail, just to remind you of where you are. Such as that mural that used to be at the back of Starbucks.
Is EoS already open, because I've seen a picture on DCP that shows a sub and a dessert. Maybe a soft opening or perhaps it's just a picture from another location.
I don't think it's actually done yet, so unless it was outside the building, I don't think it was from the EoS. :)
Am I the only one who finds it very sad that have given the best view in the Village to a sandwich shop?

Absolutely. I do not begruge having economical offerings on site as everyone has different budgets. But that is a prime location and it equates to a sandwich shop with a load of folks that will want to eat and run.
I find it very hard to muster any particular enthusiasm about EoS tbh. It sounds like the food will be nice, and the building looks nice, so that's all very nice, but I would have hoped that changes/additions to the Village would try to develop a bit more than nice.
It won't save the Village, but I think it's a very good development. It must be about 80% of Disneyland Paris guests who never see the inside of a table service restaurant except for breakfast, and virtually no one eats in one three times a day, and up until now the options for them have been abysmal. They're still abysmal in the parks, but at least now in the Village they won't be so dependent on McDonald's.
And so they get a nice view. And that sandwich/parfait lunch does look awfully good. If it turns out to be reasonably priced and not stuffed with chemicals, I will love this place forever.
By the way, the French don't run with their fast food. It's one of their finest attributes. That's why you can never get a seat in a French McDonald's.

Well to be fair, it's got a lot of windows and seating areas.

Ooh I didn't realise we had Earl of Sandwich in this country!! Are there many of them in London?? Thanks
One opened in Ludgate Hill in the square mile last month, it is the first, but their business plan is to rival Pret a Manger or Eat in the UK (notice they did not mention Subway, given that Subway is bigger than McDonald's now, probably sensible).

Love that ceiling decoration. This might just beat Starbucks and all its cool recycled wood for me.
Quite an improvement over just a few years to have two stylish cafés in the village now, isn't it?
It would if we could see a general master plan or a general design for the village. At the moment it´s just a mix of diffrent boxes which doesn´t fit that well together.
So yes the earl´s design is a good step for one building and it´s nice to see that they try something new. But please do something that brings back the "all of a piece"-look of the village. That´s not something that you can fix with some ballons.

The balloons are so ugly and I hope they will be removed sooned than later. You are totally right, there is no master plan of DV. When King Ludwig's Castle opened the industrial theme was gone. For me the problem is that one side of DV has a consistent design, while the other side with King Ludwig, Starbucks and Earl of Sandwich, is a mix of buildings.
I think one solution could be that Disney firstly removes all the balloons and installs lamposts and secondly gives the other side individual designs. That means that every building looks different and that creates a "consistent theming" again.
Does Earls offer a kids menu? I haven't come across one.

I am hoping that once World of Disney opens they will replace the existing "Disney" stores on the other side and whatever they put there will have better exteriors.
I am not a fan of the current look of Disney Village so I really hope that it gets an overall facelift soon after the opening of World of Disney... and until that happens I guess it doesn't really make much sense to do that... as much as I would cheer if they did :P

I was just looking at some pictures of the new Tangaroa's Terrace food court at the Disneyland Hotel in California, thinking how awfully pathetic Disneyland Paris' restaurants of that genre are with their overpriced supermarket fare.
But you know what, here we are. Look at those gorgeously filled shelves. Look at those parfaits. Are those Kettle-style chips?
I will most definitely be having the majority of my lunches here in the future.
The earl looks good but I´m a bit disapointed that they haven´t done much with rainforest cafe

Nevertheless I think it is a nice addition to DV, especially since the Disney food quality isn't the best in that price category. I'm sure EoS will be a hge success.
It's clear that the Americans (and not just Disney) have made huge progress in the field of quick service dining, and that Euro Disney hasn't caught up with this yet, still selling mainly burgers and fries. The health craze, the foodie explosion, the rising popularity of Starbucks and Subway... It's gone right past them.
But now we have this. Excellent.
Although, come to think of it, aren't they supposed to switch from Nescafe to Segafredo right about now? That would be a huge leap forward.
And Trader Sam's looks marvelous. I love Tiki culture. There is a Trader Vic's in London, which is superb, but I have a feeling that's the closest Tiki culture is ever going to come to Europe. I don't see that happening at Disneyland Paris, frankly.
Quote from: "pussinboots"Although, come to think of it, aren't they supposed to switch from Nescafe to Segafredo right about now? That would be a huge leap forward.
Segafredo replaced Nescafe a few weeks ago. Is Segafredo an Unilever brand? A few years ago Unilever became a sponsor of DLRP and since Nestle and Unilver offer the same variety of products. Until recently Nestle only supplied DLRP with beverages and coffee. I think that's because of the fact that Coca Cola distributes Nestle beverages. Maybe now Unilever will also replace the beverages. If I'm not mistaken Lipton is a Unilever brand and that can replace the Nestea and I'm sure Coke or Unilever have a mineral water to replace Perrier, which is a Nestle brand.
Segafredo is blissfully independent.
I'm not sure Unilever has a brand of bottled water. Which must surely make it the one thing they don't sell. The European market is dominated by Nestle (Perrier, San Pellegrino, Vittel) and Danone (Evian, Volvic).
I would miss Nestea and San Pellegrino, though. Lipton Iced Tea is dreadful, especially the carbonated kind that is so inexplicably popular in Europe.
Lets just hope the workers are faster at taking and making orders then what they are in the parks.

Fast food needs a new definition at DLRP. They really need to improve the ordering process, because it takes really long to order and to get the food. At WDW the CMs are a lot faster.
But it's also annoying when guests stand in line and when they have to order they don't know what to choose.

I remember being at the Hyperion and it took 25mins to get served and get food. Noone was in front of me, the CM just seemed to be half asleep. I was disgusted.
Quoteand that Euro Disney hasn't caught up with this yet, still selling mainly burgers and fries
I have to disagree with this that, kind of. Me and my parter were both pleasently surprised with how different the food in the parks were compare to last year. Annoyingly though, I cant remember too much of what was different, but I can remember having a lovely bagette in the Blockbuster Cafe, and a really tastly veal and chicken(?) kebab in the Hakuna Matata restaurant. Also, the offerings in that little Mexican place opposite BTM were very nice too, think the new stuff there were tortilla's? Also had some nice chicken and chips from a little hut opposite the riverboat landing.
The food may not be perfect, but the variety of what was on offer had changed a lot compared to 2009/10.

Compared with other Disney resorts and even with other themeparks, DLRP is still far away from the food offered there. And from a vegetarian point of view it gets worse and worse from year to year. In 2008 there was the Omelette Burger, Vegetarian Fajitas or several veggie sandwiches available. Last year none of those meals were offered.
Compared with WDW DLRP is really bad when it is about food.
The Disneyland Park has always had a few outposts selling regional specialties, of which the Cowboy Cookout Barbecue has always been the best by far in my opinion. Hakuna Matata and Fuente del Oro just aren't very good, although they do offer an alternative to standard fast food, yes.
But as Dagobert points out, the overall quality is horrendous and the menus have become simplified into infinity, especially compared to the American parks. Instead of the relish-topped slaw and chili cheese dogs of Casey's at Walt Disney World, Casey's Corner in Paris serves nothing more complicated than hot dogs with and without cheese. Instead of the delicious, ample Angus burger of the Village Haus in California, au Chalet de la Marionnette offers something flat, over-processed and bland. Instead of parfaits with fresh fruit toppings, we get Activia yogurt. Then there's the outdated way you order. Is it even possible to get a custom order? What would the cashier do? Panic?
Coffee is another thing, of course. In the US parks, it's now possible to get such Starbucks-style concoctions as an Iced Chai Tea Latte. Disneyland Paris has given us Cafe Cafes, which serves Nescafe with flavored syrups. But I suppose there's some hope there.
But what doesn't even exist here is the food court. White Water Snacks, that sort of thing. Our hotels have sit-down restaurants... Period. The closest thing would be the Castle Club lounge at the Disneyland Hotel, but that's not exactly public as we know.
Anyway. Apparently, Disney has already taken to putting an outdoor vending cart in front of New York Style Sandwiches this week. Maybe they're starting to fear the competition?

Totally agree with you and there is nothing to add. Even at counter service restaurant at WDW it is possible to substitute or leave some ingredients off the meal, but in Paris that's not possible. And the service is also a lot better and faster compared to Paris. I admit that the language barrier may have to do with that, but that's why DLRP introduced the new photo menues to show the cashier what you want to order. Unfortunately it didn't really help. Not to mention the quality of the food offered at WDW.
The table service restaurants at DLRP aren't that bad, but compared to other parks I have been, especially WDW, they lose.
The one thing that really frustrated me last year was the lack of fresh fruit available - in fact when I return in September I'm going to take a backpack full of the stuff; save me constantly hunting for the stuff! :)
slightly off topic - if you stay in a disney hotel then theres always a fruit bowl at breakfast - we have often taken an apple or two for later in the day as its easier than trying to find some in the parks :-)
Apple juice! That's all I'll say, we found one place in the parks to buy apple juice and that was the Baby Centre, and our 18 month old at the time......would only drink apple juice! There is more to soft drinks than milk (sort of!), orange juice, and a bottle of coke DLP.

What is so rude about asking a question (though I do have a huge dislike for picnicers in the parks - too many bad experiences of buying food in a counter restaurant and not being able to get a seat due to picnicers taking tables and breaking the rules, and DLP cast are terrible for enforcing them).
Your post did come across quite rude.
If they want to get a take away sandwich, its their choice, no need to question their decision on that, and no need for the little dig at them sitting a table.
Apologies if it came across as rude. It just struck me as facinating when EoS probably has the prettiest view now of all the eateries (except maybe Cafe Mickey). Also wanted to point out these are hot sandwiches, so they may not be as enjoyable eaten cold. and yes, I wanted to dig at picnicing. No picnics used to be allowed in the parks and I would like it to stay that way.
But you dont like the food they have on offer in the parks either? Yet you dont want people bringing in their own food....
It is annoying when people bring their own food and use the outside and sometimes even the inside tables of the park restaurant. On New Years Eve 2006 there were so many people occupying tables in Colonel Hathi's without even ordering anything and eating their own food. Another park guest complained and the people were told to leave the restaurant. The CMs should enforce that more often.
I don't mind people picnicing in the parks as long as they use the general benches and not restaurant tables, don't leave trash behind and don't sit or lie and the lawn in front of the castle.
Quote from: "Martyn"But you dont like the food they have on offer in the parks either? Yet you dont want people bringing in their own food....
Where do you get that idea. I hate the way they have dumbed down the menues, or gotten rid of good table service offerings in favour of buffets. But I like the Silver Spur, Blue Lagoon, Auberge de Cindrillon, Last Chance Cafe, Fuente Del Oro, Hakuna Matata, and Bella Notte. As well as the California Grill, Annette's, and the Steakhouse.
I miss how Cowboy Cookout BBQ, King Ludwigs, Cafe Mickey (when it was LA Bar and Grill), Parkside Diner, Manhatten Bar and Grill, and Hunters Grill used to be (unique dining experiences).
and no, I do not think food should be allowed to be carried into the park unless you have a special diet need and prove it with medical documents.

If people wish to picnic, there is a picnic area between the village and the car park....
I know there is a picnic area and if Disney wishes that people use it then they have to enforce that people leave the park. In my opinion Disney knows that most people will not leave the parks and tolerates that. I think it is not possible to for a park with thousands of visitors per day to do so. I just want that restaurant CM tell people who don't order anything to leave the resataurant.
People picniced at WDW inside the parks and it was also tolerated. When security searched the bags they didn't take the food away.
I don't think it was rude, just blunt and fair. Imagine you go into your local café and you cant get a table, but someone is sitting on a table with an M&S meal deal. Same as going into a park restaurant and finding someone with a picnic at a table.
Thanks SM:M3...
It is getting a bit off topic, but how do other themeparks handle that problem? Is it tolerated to picnic inside the park at DL Anaheim, Tokyo, Hong Kong and non-Disney parks?
I don't know if it was allowed at Cedar Point, but many people brought their own food and ate inside the park? We saw that at WDW, too, but WDW also offers picnic baskets to purchase. I think WDW and all other Disney resorts have the same policy that bringing food into the parks is not allowed, therefor they have picnic areas outside the park, although I think these places are hardly ever used.
As I've said before, I don't mind people eating their own food as long as they don't use the restaurant tables, don't leave trash behind and don't sit on the lawn in front of the castle.
Non disney parks often allow it (the Merlin parks do allow picnicing, just at designated areas in the parks).
Disney officially does not allow it in any of their parks, but they turn a blind eye (they never used to when I was a kid, but they also enforced a dress code back then too).
A dress code? I'm sorry to say that, but that's a little problem in the US parks and not only in the parks. I couldn't believe in what clothes some people showed up on the University.
The Japanese definately win when it comes to clothes.
Now back on topic:
Does Ear of Sandwich operate the restaurant or is it a franchise operated by Group Flo or even by Disney?
Does it do cold sandwiches as well as hot? On the menu I only saw hot?
I am not 100% sure about Paris, but I only recall hot sandwiches in the one in Florida.

I believe its Earl of Sandwich operated.
Thanks for the info, SM:M3!!
Although the restaurant is open now for a few days the website isn't still working.
By the way, I didn't think of it as rude, but thanks anyway. ^_^
I have had hot sandwiches as subway and not eaten them till I have walked home, hey I even left one over night and ate it the next day lol.
Does anyone know if they do a meal deal and how much they are?
Quote from: "littlemermaid83"Does anyone know if they do a meal deal and how much they are?
As yet there are no meal deals, you can make up your own meal but it's priced per item and not as a set.
Sandwiches are at a rate of €5.50 each and Breakfast and Childrens Sandwiches are a cheaper €3.50!
:D

Its quite pricey if you have to add on extras, which sucks.
Do they sell fries?

Here is a menu of the UK EoS. It will be the same in France since EoS sells the same in the Us, too.

Maybe in France they will sell Fries instead of crisps.
By the way does the Eos France website work on your PC? When the site opened there was the concept art of the building, but there was an overlay with the links to the menu and other stuff. It's not finished yet.

Thanks for the link. Least its in English lol.
Does anyone know the opening times? Their breakfast menu looks tasty but if the opening times don't suit it will be useless.
their opening times seems strange to me, they are open from 7am - 7pm .Is it just me or does anyone else think thats strange?
I would have thought the evenings would be a really busy time - just look how busy McDonalds is in the evening. I for one prefer a light snack in the evening rather than a big meal, breakfast is the time when i like to have a bit of a gorge then I have all day to try and work it off :-)
7-7???? What a waste, given most people in that area are unlikely to buy breakfast, and the Village is very quiet in the day time. And at night the restaurant queues are rediculous that we do not bother. And yet they have a prime piece of real estate. Hopefully that will change after they look at crowd patterns.
How long do they serve the breakfast menu until?
I'm just wondering cos although I won't use it at breakfast time (free hotel breakfast trumps anything that costs money), thanks to my dietary issues, the breakfast menu is all I can eat from what they offer so if I can still get it later on in the day I'll be happy.
Hopefully the opening hours are a mistake. It doesn't make any sense to close the restaurant when the parks close.

Argh, I was hoping to grab food on the way out of the parks. If this isn't a mistake back to McDonalds it is.
8.30am until 11pm
Much better, thanks Poppy.
glad to see they have a quality website - lets hope they take more care over their food!!!!
Thankyou Poppy :D

I think it's managed by Planet Hollywood France, or there's some crossover there at least. They've certainly got two prime locations, bookending the Village!
^ Lets just hope the Earl doesn't share the same customer service as at Planet Hollywood

I hope so! I've been to Planet Hollywood 5 times since 2002 and always enjoyed the food but both food and service were awful in September last year and DH and I have vowed not to eat there anymore. :(
^ We keep saying that each year, but we do keep going back for some reason.!lol But we tried Ludqig's for the first time in January, and we were quite impressed, so we'll probably make that swap from now on.
The service at EoS was great. So was the food. Very fast even at peak times. Been there twice the last week. I can only recommend it.
Even lake view is great, except for the thousands of greenflys. But thats not EoS fault.
Thanks Poppy!!

Does anyone know if annual passport holders get a discount at EoS, like they do in McDonalds and Starbucks etc

Sandwiches gives Mr. Gas indigestion...but he always takes it with a smile!

To celebrate the opening of Earl of Sandwich, Mr Gas booked a brass section. Unfortunately, the person on the other end of the phone was dyslexic.

We have been to Planet Hollywood once and it was awful. Since then we have visited Ludwigs and have always been impressed. However I think other people have discovered them now too as the queue was the biggest I have ever it when we went there at Easter!
^ Well thats good. They're food is nice, different and reasonably priced, so they deserve more success than PH.

LOOOOL Loving these captions!
Well, personally I've run out of amusing captions. However, I like the idea of having a permanent "Caption This" topic, where we make Disneyland Paris news slightly more entertaining.
