I am taking my two out of school for our holiday in January, to be honest both of mine have great attendance, never late complete homework etc so I cant see that a few days off will really affect them, they are both working ahead of there age group and I am more than willing to have any work they may miss caught up with at home if needs be. I am expecting a fine to be honest but I will be requesting the time off with a letter explaining about attendance and being happy for them to catch up at home ect etc. My oldest has just started high school so am not sure what's going to happen there. I wouldnt take them out when I knew they had exams etc coming up.
I signed a petition online about allowing parents to take them out of school for 2 weeks of the year and it is scheduled to be debated in parliament on the 26th of this month, hopefully they will see sense and if a child does have great attendance and are doing well they could give you a bit of a break.
We have people at our school who are continuously late every day and they get nothing so why penalise people who get there children to school regularly 😒

To be honest I can see both sides - but as I say it's down to the Local Authority NOT the school to decide when a fine should be imposed. You have to remember that most places do allow up to two days absence and the most generous is a week!

Saying that I would probably take my child out and just pay the £60 fine. You definitely won't end up with anymore serious action being pursued providing you pay within 28 days.

   Don't even get me started on this subject......

Ever since my first son (now 13yrs) was 9 months old, we have taken him on holiday once or twice a year.  Sometimes that has been a week tagged on May half term - when the rules were more relaxed.  Sometimes it was a couple of days tagged onto the main holiday periods.  Sometimes it has been for a weekend away at Center Parcs. 

I understand how the ruling is imposed to safeguard children, however that does seem at the expense of some.  My child, is just that - my child.  If I deem that they will benefit more from going on a holiday when I can afford it by jiggling a day here and there, then for goodness sake of course I'm going to do it!  I've even used the 'sick card' before with the eldest.  But never for more than one or two days.

As a result of taking my children abroad they understand a great deal of the World around them.  They also see Mum & Dad without the everyday cares and worries that can dull the edges of life.  We get to laugh, swim, play experience and enjoy each other in a relaxed environment.

My kids have are making good progress, have excellent attendance and I will apologise to no-one for the decisions I make on this subject.  Much less pay a fine!

I know it is sooo difficult for the school/headteachers.  Our headteacher has been particularly understanding over recent years as we live in Cornwall and some parents simply cannot take off time during peak holiday periods.

If you are not abusing the system and 'repeat' offending at every available opportunity - then I believe as human beings we have the right to enjoy special time with our children.  Life is short and often stolen away without warning.  Memories are the most treasured gift we can have.

So, if I were you, I'd do it!

Life is to short I have two friends who lost their children aged 5 and the other child 6. I am very close with one of the mums still and she talks often about their trip to DLP and relieves all the fun and enjoyment they had. Where my son is disabled obviously many of my friends have disabled children also and since having my son it's taught me so much especially that time and memories are precious.

People need to still have a life outside of work and I believe same with children too! I'm not saying kids should have lots of holidays ect but surely a week a year or even a few days?

Our children grow up fast as do us parents! And I say enjoy it while we can while our kids still want to be kids and become independent and working themselves and worrying about the things we do! I hope the law changes because it will benefit so many families especially those that simply cannot afford to go in school holidays ect it really isn't fair.

I personally would request the time off If your fined, your fined. Still will be worth it

The official line is to refer to the courts if 10 consecutive sessions (5 days) are missed or if attendance is below 85%. Just fill in a holiday request form - this will probably not get authorised but at least you are telling them where the children are and there is nothing further they can do about it.
If I didn't work in a school I would do this. Have a great holiday! x
